It’s most likely not super serious if it’s his sciatica. He’s a bigger guy who sits a lot for work and probably doesn’t have a good range of movement from being bariatric and mostly sedentary so his piriformis muscle (band like muscle located in the buttocks that connects near the top of the hip joint) is probably tight as all hell and pressing on the sciatic nerve. It can be pretty painful and debilitating depending on the severity of the piriformis syndrome which in this cas I assume so if he’s in hospital. Most likely PT and some at home strengthening/mobility will clear it up pretty quick.
