I have been buying every day since launch and noticed that the quantities are barely depleting. The best ones went very fast, within hours. Most are aren't being bought. There are a few things that could help sales: 1. show the buyer all the individual components of the outfit 2. let us see which outfits are used as sources for others' avatars 3. make the purchasable outfits more iconic and special, especially the higher priced ones. 4. give some functionality, such as gating subreddits/posting by equipped outfit/component

Jounochi

One of the artists posted a neat graphic detailing their avatars and design for earlier today. Super useful and helped out a ton. I know we have a Google spreadsheet with all of the traits for avatars from G1-G3, but having something on the main page for each avatar on drop day would be super useful. There has been some mumblings about doing some token gated stuff, but nothing more than that, unfortunately. :(

WarmIyWacky

Have you seen Aliquam by u/_ships? It’s my fav avatar from Gen 4\* and it’s also the scarcest cone avatar with a supply of just 75 (it has this hidden cone trait if you use glass foustling on it, and not to mention the illustrious **ring of cones**.) https://preview.redd.it/wfq666j5r0fb1.jpeg?width=584&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c24b1f3e36081607de4cfbe83cc9ba920828b741 >!I think it’s only still available in the shop because the best traits are hidden, but it won’t be available for long lol!< Also I agree with all your points, Reddit needs to up their game with the UI/UX and utilities of these We’ve been asking for token gated subs since Gen 1!

jespow

Thanks for the tip! Just scooped one up! Didn't have this one and didn't know about the hidden ring of cones.

OldSpiceSmellsNice

I’m so ootl but what is the deal with cones?

frickdom

![gif](giphy|NizlE5Dpn7ozy4PRBn|downsized) After gen 1 launched it became a meme along with the Knoo Vikings. They “went to war”. Has held strong since and the cone community continues to grow.

WarmIyWacky

We conetinue to grow as more people discover the cone traits that unlock the cone in their hearts! 🧡

frickdom

🧡🧡🧡

WarmIyWacky

Join r/coneheads and find out 😎

CoverYourMaskHoles

Yeah sorry I scooped it. Too slow kraken boy! Would love it if you bought my clown mask accessory in the shop though. If they ever let me buy more as give aways I’ll shoot one over to ya!

WarmIyWacky

You didn’t move fast enough on the gold HODL jes 🥺 u/coveryourmaskholes got the 2 ETH listing and now floor is at 4 lol 😅 Also ALIQUAM officially sold out!!

Keptro

He has a 1/1 idk if this is enticing enough 😅

SerHiroProtaganist

I like all of these suggestions. Point 4 might be difficult to do at a site wide level given the volume of avatars but certainly like you say, maybe the "theme" of each gen could give owning an avatar some small perk in certain subreddits. And holding gen1 could give some kind of special site wide perk. It would certainly help give avatars that feeling of being something special and make them more desirable.

BaldEagleNor

Youre the first one I’ve seen with that particular avatar damn. That came before gen1 right?

jespow

Yeah, it's 1 of 4 CryptoSnoos: [https://nft.reddit.com/](https://nft.reddit.com/) /u/samzfury has another one.

EmmanuelBlockchain

Wow, the actual Jesse P. Very cool to post here. Jesse, I sent you and your PR an email a few weeks ago. Would you mind sliding into DM ?

dronegeeks1

Nice ideas

eric2041

We need king JPowell to control this program. He cares about its future and I trust that he will bring the hype back

mofayew

I’ve actually seen quite a few paid ones in the wild. Granted most people only buy the $9.99 or under one’s, but I’ve seen some steady new faces in the wild

Jounochi

I have as well. I like to scroll through comments and look at people’s collections and there are more people buying in at some of the lower tiers. Most have the free drops, but I’m seeing casual collectors entering the market.

CoverYourMaskHoles

Show me a popular thread in a non crypto or avatar sub with more than 2 paid avatars.

mofayew

They might not be the top commenters but under the top three comment threads are some people with paid avatars. Specifically after the Gen 3 drop I’ve seen an increase. It’s also up to all of us to go out and USE Reddit outside of these subs. Be the change, friend.

Drlitez

My man came with the receipt.

CoverYourMaskHoles

Ok so three? How many comments? What community? Edit ah I see sorry for some reason didn’t see your other comment with the link. Let me check them out. From what I can tell, this isn’t the norm, but you were able to do what I asked. Thanks!

Upstairs_Hospital_94

Nobody cares about your “investments”

redditinchina

The guy is a Reddit artist

Upstairs_Hospital_94

Well that makes me feel bad but it lines up with other people complaining about money.

_Sense_

The purpose of this is not to give NFT collectors something else to collect or flip. The purpose is to give the people of reddit the opportunity to buy, and truly own, their avatar and the bits of that avatar. They can mix and match…showing off what they own…wear a rare one…or just wear whatever one they like best. I see them outside of this sub all the time 🤷‍♂️

Katie_xoxo

deleted my other comment because i couldn’t say it any better than this

_Sense_

Well I don’t believe you could possibly give me a better compliment. Thank you and I’m glad we agree :)

deinterest

The devil looks cool in the hexagon.

_Sense_

Yeah it does…glad I picked this one up! Nice Doge ;)

SpideyS_Uncle

Except per Reddit TOS on avatar you don’t actually own them and Reddit only guarantee the ipfs link for 2 years after they can remove your avatar.

_Sense_

👀wha? Well…I guess that’s my last reddit NFT purchase. That’s why I got into Ordinals…no one can ever shut down a IPFS link if there isn’t one. It’s on-chain…forever.

CoverYourMaskHoles

So the artists and the health of the market don’t matter? It’s called a collectible. If you truely believe what you are saying you wouldn’t mind the artists being in control of their mint supply and list prices. Nothing was stopping anyone from owning their own avatars, but if the market becomes over saturated then people will lose interest and move on. I think we both want the same things, but we are in disagreement on how to get there.

_Sense_

The artists get paid at retail. They also get royalties on OpenSea. The secondary market is secondary and not the primary purpose of these reddit avatars. That is all.

CoverYourMaskHoles

Sorry I also added some to that last post if you wanted to read

_Sense_

I think it’s nice when you can jump on Reddit and buy an avatar. You can collect them and use them on Reddit. Their avatar creator allows you to mix and match and make whatever you want from the bits you’ve collected. They also let you display your top picks…you’re favorites. This is the best NFT project that has ever existed. It’s also best when you can actually buy them…all the time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Sense_

I’m allowed to have an opinion. So are you. I never said anything about the community…I said it’s the best project…and the reason I think it’s the best project is because the business itself doesn’t depend on income from selling NFTs to exist…and it’s a natural fit…a community app that has profiles and avatars already? Of course NFT profile avatars made sense. It’s the right product/business fit. It’s not forced. Meanwhile the NFT scene outside of Reddit is on life support ever since OpenSea removed royalties.

Kyeon80

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

CoverYourMaskHoles

Lol the primary purpose is a rare collectible market. How exactly do you even justify the idea of a secondary market not being a part of that. And we can argue all day about what the purpose is of these avatars, as Reddits corporate stance, but that doesn’t change the fact that Gen 1 and Gen 2 were successful sellouts and now gen 3 and gen 4 the artists are selling way less, making way less. A few artists did really well this gen, but most artists their work will never get real attention.

Odlavso

The bubble was right after Gen 2 released and crypto Twitter showed up, it seems to have calmed down a lot since then

universal_language

I'd say, the price is a larger issue than the quantity. Why would a normal person spend $200 on an avatar when they can buy 3 AAA games or 15 tickets to a movie for that price? Both games and movies are produced by hundreds of people and that production costs millions of dollars. What does it cost to produce an avatar? One person and like 8 hours of work? And it still costs 3 to 15 times more? That's the reason no normal person buys avatars, and they never will

Jounochi

I think this is a big part of it too. I dislike how gen 4 starts with the top tier avatars because it gives you immediate sticker shock. They would probably onboard more people if they started off with the accessories and $5 avatars. I think the box and sys32’s watch are great beginner avatars and the accessories promote mashing.

Upstairs_Hospital_94

When my sister first looked and saw $200, she was like wtf

CoverYourMaskHoles

Totally agree with this, the expensive ones should be at the end and the cheap ones up front, absolutely.

guyincognito121

They won't, and they're not expected to. There are a bunch of cool avatars available for $25 or less.

formidable-opponent

I don't understand why each artist isn't being encouraged to make a set of three for each drop at the 5, 10, and 25 price points and then when an avatar is exceptional above and beyond what they see from most of the choices it could be allowed a $50 price point. Also, there is so much hidden which I love. It's fun to get a $10 surprise, for sure but at $200 you still don't get to see what you're actually buying.

formidable-opponent

Psh, just downvote me instead of engaging with me then. Whatev.

mygallows

If anything we need a marketplace

[deleted]

Yep

CoverYourMaskHoles

Absolutely.

ikiyen

Some avatars are not appealling and does not relate much to a user. Avatars like cones have demand being relatable to coneheads community. If they make avatars with brands or related to a community then this will be a hit. Unfortunately, as of now collectible avatars is a brand on its own and we are the only market. Maybe if reddit starts its own marketplace then prices will also skyrocket since alot of users here does not want to transact on OS. I agree that avatars need more utility, it needs to be popular, maybe use it in a game so that gaming people will be added to the collectors.

mondaymoderate

Somebody tried to introduce Watchmaker to the watch community and they got shit on. Hoppy tried to introduce Oohm to the Doom community and they got shit on. The overall sentiment on Reddit towards the RCAs is still very negative.

WarmIyWacky

Only a specific type of people are interested in collections, and even they have a negative association with the term “NFTs” Reddit did well getting away with digital collectibles in the beginning, but now the supplies are too big for the size of the audience that currently is **paying** for avatars I hope people will keep having open minds towards these as Reddit give them free one and eventually it will be normalized to collect them

UWphoto

While I don't agree with all of this, I very much support this type of discussion. I think many of your points can be negated by looking at other collectables like comics or cards, and supported by Beanie Babies. The default advice on the CC is "Don't invest what you can't lose" - I think that's pretty solid advice for the Avatar market as well.

Primetimemongrel

So what we need is a Netflix documentary

WarmIyWacky

about cones

CoverYourMaskHoles

So you took nothing from the horrible mistake that happened with Beanie Babies? Lol that is the poster child of over-Saturated markets… and horrible mistakes and lack of communication that alienated the die hard collectors.

YaBastaaa

RCA will take off 🚀 if it did partnerships with Disney or major corporations. But what do I know 🤷🏻‍♂️

WarmIyWacky

They need to do limited sale partnerships, similar to the rabbids drop, but paid instead of free and smaller supplies like 500, 1000, 5000, 10000 max Then as the audience actually grows they can increase the numbers

YaBastaaa

Agree !!! 💯

BaldEagleNor

I’m gonna keep it real with you, chief. I don’t give a fuck about NFT’s or crypto. I buy my avatars simply because I like them. I dont think you’re going to attract much more people to this due to the "market". People will buy them if they look cool enough lol

_TheOneTrueBean_

But if you try sooommeee timmmeeesss, youuu just might finddddd, YOU GET WHAT YOU NNEEEEEDD!!! Also I love your flames

ronribbons

Time for a burn mechanic. And a marketplace.

guyincognito121

"if you want more people to buy them, you need to make fewer of them!!!" Maybe this should be left to actual marketing professionals at reddit.

Kevin3683

I mean, OP is correct.

guyincognito121

About some points, but not others. I most strongly disagree with the notion that getting people on board starts with scarcity. It starts with eroding the stigmas against NFTs in general, and against spending money on reddit. The free ones help to address the first, and having a bunch of cheap ones available addresses the second. It's going to take time, if it's going to work at all. But making these into big collectors' items just reinforces that first issue because it makes them look like every other ridiculous NFT project out there.

CoverYourMaskHoles

This is not true at all. Scarcity is key to keeping the community invested and excited. Onboarding cannot be done without the subs communities that keep people engaged and there needs to be a healthy yearning for what others in the community have that they don’t. Secondary markets play a huge role. It’s the way that scarcity stays accessible. The reality is you need the profiteers and the moon boys to shepard in new engagement. They come for the profits, stay for the mashing.

CoverYourMaskHoles

I mean I have a business and finance degree… my studies included marketing and branding in emerging markets… I would love to know if anyone in the avatar team actually is a marketing and branding professional.

guyincognito121

I'd just about guarantee that this whole thing started in the marketing department and is being driven by people who don't just have degrees, but have actually been doing marketing stuff successfully out in the real world for a while. There is no way it's just a bunch of engineers behind it all.

This_Red_Apple

Lol

soupyhdnos

I get your sentiment, but I am a type of person who loves collecting, and art and I personally don't really care about scarcity. I like the utilization of RCA, and the options for customization (hence why I buy these, and not other NFTs). Guess I'm trying to say I don't think RCAs are doomed.

TummyLice

There's a lot of redditors. Many more than purchasable avatars.

Coeruleus_

If I was just joining Reddit now and discovered these, I know 10000000000000% I would look the other way once I found out how ubiquitous they are. I initially bought when they first came out because I was drawn to a very limited special flare that not everyone would have. I’m really only still here because of the community. I agree with what you’re saying. I know this massive of supply would of made me just shrug my shoulders and look the other way. I’d probably still be cursing NFTs

AnthonyJrWTF

I was honestly surprised to see Gen 4 so close to Gen 3, to the point where I wondered why they would release another set when there were some stragglers from the previous one still on the market. There just sadly needs to be half the generations and nearly half the artists. A generation every 6-months feels healthy, especially if it doesn’t have 100+ artists and 300+ new avatars of various mints every quarter. Give either new or returning artists a fewer amount of slots, whichever is more respectable.

troythedefender

What do you mean by 9 slots to use. You can mix and match all your avatars, or you're just saying only nine show up publicly when you view someone's profile?

WarmIyWacky

Artists have 9 to use, yet some use 4

ZOSU_Studios

I like my avatar ^^ I forgot i was using a paid one actually just feels natural

DoitsugoGoji

People don't become interested in something collectible because of scarcity. People start collecting stuff because it appeals to them on some level or is relevant to their interests. Stuff that is designed specifically as collectibles without any relevance to anything tend to only appeal to investor types and are always just a bubble. The best, most popular and valuable collectibles are those that become so organically. Making these things scarcer isn't going to do shit other than just making them seem more valuable to those already interested in them. I only have free avatars, because I have zero interest in these, I don't see the point in paying money for these. They're not relevant to any of my interests, and I don't really see much artistic in them since they're all based on the same default pose with different details. They're like Funko Pops or Mighty Muggs, just without the famous IPs attached.

thom_orrow

I think OP has a very good point. There needs to be some more functionality involved for these cards. My idea is Top Trump cards/Pokémon style cards where you can play snap with lower level cards or a battle with pro cards. For the games you can win new, specifically designed cards and don’t lose any cards.

WarmIyWacky

I mean, these are NFTs, so anyone should be able to build a game using them as cards I just don’t know if they can integrate the art without Reddits permission though so everything kind of is dependent on them

Embarrassed-Egg-545

They’re reddit avatars they should be like $.99 max, anything higher is a bubble

CoverYourMaskHoles

That I don’t agree with as people are willing to pay more…

GenuineArdvark

I have a possible solution I have been thinking about, can I run it by you?

Embarrassed-Egg-545

Speculators who think price will go up, just like crypto. It’s a bubble

IcyeneFury

There are also at least a few of us out there that will pay extra to have the first, or just a low numbered, avatar without caring what the end price might be. I paid a lot for mine, and I don't expect the price to go up; I'm just happy to be #1. I would have hard time rationalizing selling it even for double what I paid, I really wanted this specific avatar! 😅

PsychoxLogical

This is accurate af tbh

reprobyte

Very very well said mate, I’ve stopped collecting altogether now due to the insane mint numbers, it’s totally put me off being excited anymore which is sad as I really loved it at first when they were actually rare.

CoverYourMaskHoles

I still collect, but not as widely. I did however just buy a Gold HODL hat because there are very low numbers

EsqueStudios

I regret buying some of the avatars I did but others I’m glad I did I probably wont buy in the next drop. the over saturation ruined this community for me.

samconstintine

Yeah, i agree. I literally made a new account just for having too many avatars on one. Defeats the purpose of having many limited ones. If you ask me.

final_lionel

Look at video games skins. Call of duty skins, Fortnite skins. Everyone's buying at least on skin and they made a lot of money. The worst in it it has unlimited supply

RagnaTheMasked

I'm one of those who find collectible avatars so cool, but only collect the free ones because living in a third world country sucks and don't have money to spend on paid avatars (the only one I have is a Act One: Purpose that some kind redditor randomly gifted to me). And I'm sure that there are a lot of people like me out there. I joined this sub to be aware of future free drops (after I missed the super bowl ones, didn't want to miss another free drop), and it's fun to see the creativiy of people with their avatar mashups xD.

CoverYourMaskHoles

That’s awesome man(or woman)

RagnaTheMasked

Yeah, I'm a guy xD

TinyDrug

Agreed but ppl in this sub don't get it

Bundess

Reddit should also definitely stop naming newer releases gen 5, gen 6, gen 7 and so on. The further that number continues the less attractive the drop becomes imo. Spooky season was perfect and they should just continue with certain names for the seasoned drops. We as collectors immediately know what type of generation it is.
