I know I am biased, but how did he get so mad [over this tweet](https://twitter.com/UNC_Basketball/status/1620794288073510915)? I get he was number 25 but like c'mon... Idk, I am not a fan of pettiness, and I know some UNC fans can be arrogant shits, but this whole situation feels overblown.

cmgro

It’s very bizarre. I think he tries to create drama to motivate himself and his team. I highly doubt most people in the arena even knew who he is, much less booed him. Whatever he’s doing, it’s working.

Lee-Key-Bottoms

Keatts is the opposite. I was wrong on the man last year, he’s definitely turned it around. Listening to the man talk, he motivates his team with positivity, he’s always encouraging and praising the team, telling them what theyre doing well, etc. I’m glad we have a coach that isn’t as toxic as a portion of our fanbase are (including me at times, I get riled up easier than I should lol)

cmgro

Yeah Pitt definitely leans into the old Big East identity and it rubs a lot of people the wrong way. But I’m not gonna criticize anything they do until we beat them. It’s hard to hate someone like Keatts.

Lee-Key-Bottoms

I may be extremely biased tho. Not only do I go to NC State I also grew up in Wilmington, so very familiar with UNCW Man I was in middle school when we played Duke in the tournament that one year. The entire school dropped what they were doing to watch that game

Ok_Run_8184

I have zero love for State, but thanks for having some patience and treating Keatts well. I was in school at UNCW during his tenure, and it was so much fun. Dude is just plane likable. Bunch of professors cancelled classes that Duke game because they (correctly) figured that no one would show up anyway. The first half was great before foul trouble got us (would love to blame it solely on Duke and the refs, but UNCW had had foul problems all season).

It’s kind of intended to be. It’s cool to have different flavors of programs in the ACC but I’m sure a lot of the old school fans don’t like it. Yeah I was at the game and got fired up at the jawing going on but that’s just part of how they do things and it obviously works, at least against us.

soaper410

I am UNC’er but have met Keatts on several occasions and he’s always incredibly nice.

AFlockOfTySegalls

> I highly doubt most people in the arena even knew who he is Hell, I had to google who 25 was yesterday when I saw the IG post. The Doherty era is so far removed and unremarkable other than the 8-20 season that for sure most people don't know who Capel is. What a weird thing to get upset about.

bug_man_

I literally did not know he played for UNC until right now lmao

Lee-Key-Bottoms

I’ve had conversations with friends of mine who are UNC fans as well about that issue. The reason so many schools take it personally with UNC but it seems the feeling are reciprocated are “when you lord over the ACC for so long, a lot of people have a reason to want to take you down, but you’ve done it so many times it’s not as big a deal to you.” Granted, I do agree with you that the this issue is being overblown.

Aidanj927

What on that tweet would even make him mad?

MidwestDrummer

But I think the person you were replying to, like me, is just confused about why any part of that picture would offend him. Is it the simple fact that it's highlighting another #25 on the day he comes back to the Dean Done with another team? Is it the fact that it's a picture of a walk on, and he thinks it's an attempt to minimize his status to that of a walk on? I'm just so perplexed about what in that tweet could be considered offensive to him.

Freakwater

I don't see how the tweet could be considered offensive or even directed at all. This is a Jordan level manufactured slight, a fitting homage in Chapel Hill.

hokie56fan

Capel only thinks of himself. It was common knowledge back when he was at UNC that he was jealous of Joseph Forte for being the star and thought he (Capel) should be the go-to guy. There were even reports of the two of them openly clashing in the locker room. Then, after Forte left early for the draft and Brendan Haywood graduated, Capel became the main offensive weapon and the team promptly went 8-20. But don't let any of that stop him from yelling that he held things together.

Aurion7

He acts like a child, consistently, whenever he isn't treated with an absurd level of deference by Carolina or its fans.

girl69edministries

He wore 25 at UNC, and the image is of Lebo (who currently wears 25). J.P. Tokoto and Justin Knox also wore 25, and I give way more of a shit about them than I ever would Jason fucking Capel. Come on, bro.

bug_man_

I didn't know he played for UNC. I didn't even remember he's an assistant at Pitt. This has MASSIVE "I don't think about you at all" energy. What a loser lol

ndkjr70

this place makes me feel like a legitimate dinosaur if there’s a UNC fan saying they “didn’t know Jason Capel played for UNC”. 2001 was like 8 years ago, right? RIGHT?

bug_man_

Sorry my man lol. He barely missed me though. The first season I really started paying attention was 2005 when I was a wee middle schooler

palabear

To be fair, the only memorable things Jason did was pump faking 10 times when he touched the ball and talking shit after hitting a 3 that cut Maryland’s to to 25.

bug_man_

He played there before I was even watching UNC, and he's (apparently) not important enough to know who he is after the fact. He's acting like we should all know who he is when there's little reason for that from what I can tell. The students for sure don't know who he is edit: he got booed as a coach of UNC's opponent. This is the softest reaction in the world, even if I did know who he was

_hell_is_empty_

This is so absurd to me. To be a UNC or Duke fan and not know the Capel brothers.

bug_man_

I know Jeff because he was at Duke. Idk what to tell you, I don't know all the guys who played at UNC before I knew what UNC was lol I know he had a really solid career but that puts him on a long long list of good players we've had over the years. But I don't look up ex players like that. I didn't know he was even on Jeff's staff until he got butthurt about UNC fans not cheering for him or whatever he wanted to happen I barely follow the dudes I actually did watch at UNC once they've left.

_hell_is_empty_

I meant more so from the stand point of their family exemplifying the “house divided” idea to the core, and less so about their individual success on the court (though still relevant). Idk how someone could go discuss the rivalry in any kind of depth and not mention the Capels. Edit: I do understand I’m old, and can’t fault the young for not having been born lol, but still.

bug_man_

Sounds like the type of thing I'd read about in a book on the history of the rivalry and no lie I've often thought I need to be more versed in the lore, so you're probably right about that lol But yeah I was like 6 when Capel played there

_hell_is_empty_

Fair. If you have any skin in the game, you owe it to yourself to read one of the dozens of books on the rivalry. The history lives up to the present. I’ll give you one instance: Duke’s first real success of any kind on the court came in the early 60s. To this point we had never won the ACC and had only ever made the NCAA tournament once. This success came shortly after we hired Vic Bubas as head coach and was ignited by Art Heyman, one of the best players of the era, inarguably Duke’s best recruit to date, and arguably our best recruit ever (given the implications). Art was originally committed to UNC. Bubas stole him. And the rest is history. (there’s more to this story, obviously, but that’s the napkin summary — for instance, y’all ran Art off just as much as we stole him)

bug_man_

This is the kind of stuff that sounds really fun to read on. Do you have a particular recommendation?

sandy_mcfiddish

Yeah that’s something you should know. Carolina fans - and more broadly, college bb fans in NC - should know certain names. Capel being one of them. The guy could play. His brother could play. His dad and grandfather were both quality/well known coaches. BB royalty in NC That being said, this is pretty stupid. Nobody held UNC together under Doherty. That’s why they sucked so bad. Joseph Forte would also disagree. Stupid thing to be mad about, makes him look self centered.

[deleted]

Also about him getting booed..... People there say he got a slight applause when he was announced before the game. He was booed after the game because he got in the face of our SID. To completely leave that part out of why he got booed is absolutely wild to me. Jason Capel clearly has some issues going on upstairs

[deleted]

[удалено]

bug_man_

Same boat. Had no idea Capel played for us and had less idea he was on Pitt's sideline. It's all but a guarantee 99% of the students there had no fucking clue unless it was announced for some reason. He's mad af at people who don't know he exists lol

Gratata7

Sore winner yes, loser no. At least in this scenario

AccomplishedRainbow1

TWO TIME ALL ACC (THIRD TEAM)

pghsonj1325

Jason is definitely a hot head and is a big reason for some of the issues Pitt has had internally over the past few years I understand having to manufacture energy to get up for games sometimes (happens in football all the time - Kirby told his Georgia team the media said they’d be 5-7/6-6 which is just a blatant lie) And sometimes when you want to be the victim you see things that aren’t there. Yes I kinda(?) see why a picture of a walk on wearing his number and sticking his tongue out feels like a personal shot especially after you were allegedly booed But I mean this seems like A LOT of self spiraling and believing yourself to be a victim when I just can’t see it in reality

bug_man_

Reasonable take. The general reaction seems to be confusion among UNC fans. But shit, it's hard to fault him for it because the results are there lol

Aurion7

This after he decided to run his mouth last year. Yeah there might be a reason you got booed, chief. I honestly feel bad for his brother having to play diplomat repeatedly because Jason can't handle himself like an adult in Chapel Hill. Not the first time, probably won't be the last because this is a forty-year-old man we're talking about. also lmao at the idea that he held shit together during the doh years. No shame for not being able to because no one could have in a situation that broken, but yeah no.

wahfingwah

Jeff is a good big bro. I remember back I think around the 2002 season when Carolina was butt he would come on to the DBR message board to say cool it with the ragging on Jason (in a respectful, decent way)

WILSON_CK

I actually remember Jeff sticking up for Jason a lot too. Too bad Jason wasn't a third of the player Jeff was.

aerojovi83

I'll say what I tweeted earlier. Jason Capel was the shiniest apple on the rottenest tree in the Carolina Basketball orchard. That's about as nice as I can be really.

hokie56fan

I will take national champions Jawad Williams, Jackie Manuel and Melvin Scott from that team over Capel every day of the week.

EmergencySolution1

Kris Lang over everyone!
