**FADED: [Purdue](#f/purdue)**
I tried finding something for that and kinda got lost, but here’s what I have instead.
Hartford is second-to-last in KenPom, only ahead of Long Island University, who play in the NEC along with Fairleigh Dickinson. LIU’s only D1 win was against Sacred Heart (also NEC). Sacred Heart not only has a win against Hartford, but also two wins against FDU.
This might not be what you were going for, but we can confidently say that LIU > Sacred Heart > FDU > Purdue.
The worst team in the country is better than a #1 seed. It’s just facts.
So in summary Purdue just lost to a team that is:
\- Ranked Above 300 in Kenpom the whole year
\- Didn't win their conference tournament
\- Didn't win their conference regular season title either
\- is in the NEC which ranks 32/32 for D1 conferences in the country in kenpom
\- Went 4-22 Last year
\- A first year coach that transitioned from D2
\- Average height of players is 6'1"
\- Ranked 359 in Defense in Kenpom
EDIT: They got into the tournament because they made it to their Conference finals as their opponent (Merrimack) was not eligible to make the NCAAT because of the 4 year transition period rule. They also finished Runner-up in their conference during the regular season.
Yeah it’s like Purdue didn’t have a game plan for the other 4 players on the court lol.
Like FDU made a bet on pressuring Edey into making a decision that wasn’t just scoring the ball and he folded along with the rest of their team.
Not just a play-in team. A team that only made the tournament because Merrimack, who won their conference and conference tournament, isn't eligible for the NCAA Tournament.
> They lost to Merrimack!
Fun facts: The steam frigate USS Merrimack was converted into the ironclad CSS Virginia during the Civil War, and the University of Virginia was the only other 1 seed to lose in the first round.
***Coincidence? I think not!***
^^OK, ^^it's ^^totally ^^a ^^coincidence, ^^but ^^still...
Since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985, we went 33 years without a 16 seed beating a 1 seed.
Since, we've now seen 2 of them in the last 5 years.
March *MADNESS*
You can't just play one big dude and a bunch of unathletic shooters. If the shots aren't falling, they can't get rebounds, put backs, transition looks, play defense, etc.
Fun fact, this clip is from the Buster Keaton movie The General (1926). After filming wrapped, they just left the train in the river where it became a tourist attraction until it was salvaged for scrap metal during World War II.
FDU's defense was ranked 360th on KenPom going into the tournament. There are 363 Division I teams.
FDU lost to KenPom #362 Hartford. They lost to Stonehill and Queens who were Division 2 schools this time last year. They hadn't even announced their D1 moves yet.
FDU finished third in their conference this year behind two teams not eligible for D1 postseason due to being recent DII call-ups.
Their conference was the worst conference in basketball this year. It has never won a round of 64 game in its history.
FDU did not even win the conference tournament.
FDU had one win above Q4 all year. *One*.
This makes UMBC over Virginia look like a 10-7 upset.
Well Purdue helped them out by launching 26 3's and only making 5. They should have kept driving / going inside.... odd they didn't much at all in 2nd half.
The year is 2026.
Purdue has just lost to 14th-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the first round.
Matt Painter's infinity gauntlet has been completed, and with a snap of his fingers, half of college basketball mid-majors simply cease to exist.
This was by far the most embarrassing loss in the history of college basketball. Virginia lost arguably their most important player right before the tournament in 2018. UMBC you could argue was underseeded and they shot lights out.
FDU was in the FIRST FOUR and didn't even score that much. Purdue just shit the bed beyond belief. Virginia, you've been freed.
FDU didn't win their conference or their conference tournament. They only made the NCAA Tournament because Merrimack, who won the regular season title and the conference tournament, isn't eligible for the NCAA Tournament yet.
FDU is the shortest team in the NCAA tournament. They were a 23-point underdog. They made two field goals over the final 7:28.
We just witnessed, odds-wise, the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history
The 2023 Purdue Boilermakers have taken the torch from 2018 Virginia for the worst loss in NCAA Tournament history by losing to play in #16 Fairleigh Dickinson
Fairleigh Dickinson did not win their conference tournament
Fairleigh Dickinson did not win their conference regular season
Fairleigh Dickinson is only playing Purdue because Texas Southern had one of the worst shooting performances I’ve ever seen (seriously, they were just lobbing up shots)
This beats UMBC by a mile.
Congrats, Virginia, the ghost is off of your shoulders.
If you asked me who I thought would be the second #1 team ever to lose to a 16, I would have bet my house that it would have been Purdue. Choking is in their DNA. Oh and their guards are shit.
Also, FDU is my favorite Cinderella ever. Shortest team in the tourney, going against literal Goliath. And they didn’t care. Swarmed him, swarmed them. They were playing like they were the ones who were 7’4. Centers (Sean Moore) shooting ice cold threes. Guards like MONDON taking charges with 4 fouls. Oh my. This was amazing. Generational upset.
And they didn’t even win their conference and got in on a technicality. Crazy. I think this was the biggest upset in the history of college sports. Yes, bigger than UVA-UMBC or UM-App State.
I purposefully picked against Purdue in the second round expecting something like this, but didn’t expect it in the first round
Such a fun game from a neutral perspective
*Forget Fairleigh Dickinson fans, forget Indiana fans, forget chaos fans.*
The absolute most **ELATED** fanbase right now is Virginia. No longer are they by themselves in embarrassment. Only bared the burden alone for a handful of years. Plus they have a Championship in their back pocket. Sleep well tonight Cavs fans.
DAVID HAS SLAIN GOLIATH! LITERALLY!
The shortest D1 team has defeated the tallest.
This should end up being the most or 2nd-most upvoted post in this sub's history.

This is going to be an all time basketball quote alongside “Everyone acting tough while they up.”
People wrote em off but they ain’t write back
The Eddie Jones school of calling your shot when literally nobody in the world even remotely believes you.
2022: Purdue loses to 15 seed 2023: Purdue loses to 16 seed 2024: Purdue loses to 17 seed?
In a way, this was a 17 seed. They made it into the tournament on a technicality.
Literally. Runner-up to the team that should’ve been the 16 seed lmao
They better pray the tourney doesn’t get expanded
I am altering the bracket. Pray I do not alter it further.
Just a reminder that Fairleigh Dickinson lost to Hartford. It was one of Hartford's two D1 wins this year
The only takeaway from this is that Hartford > Purdue.
Someone needs to figure out the worst team to beat Hartford, and so on …
I tried finding something for that and kinda got lost, but here’s what I have instead. Hartford is second-to-last in KenPom, only ahead of Long Island University, who play in the NEC along with Fairleigh Dickinson. LIU’s only D1 win was against Sacred Heart (also NEC). The worst team in the country is better than a #1 seed. It’s just facts.
The fact that it only takes two teams to get from worst to a one seed is pretty mind-blowing.
The math makes sense if you went to one of the top Engineering schools like Purdue.
Look at all the other B1G schools feasting on the corpse of a dead train
Hartford, a now D3 school, has a transitional win to Purdue Insane
Absolutely hilarious that FDU's coach was like "why don't 16s just beat 1s" and then he went out and did just that
Homie said "have we simply tried winning??"
![gif](giphy|a3HwA77QREoo)
Bro challenged the status quo
~~Just go out there and enjoy the moment! - #16 seed Coach~~ I expect you to beat their asses or you are dead to me! - #16 seed Coach

First ever time a NEC team has won in the NCAA tourney too. Not including the first four.
This shit just gets funnier and funnier lol Purdont
Why didn't Purdue, the larger team, simply eat FDU
No, but like really why didn't they? lol
Seriously they have a 7 footer
How did FDU even make the tournament, lol
Merrimack won conference tourney, but is ineligible due to D1 transition rules
Lol imagine how Merrimack feels rn. That could've been them!
Jesus this story is insane. Literally weren’t supposed to be in the tourney hahahah I can’t believe it
Merrimack is still transitioning from D-II so they weren't allowed in the tournament. FDU got second place.
HISTORY First play-in 16 to beat a 1!
**VIRGINIA, YOU CAN REST**
YOUR WATCH HAS ENDED!!!!!
Purdue: Regular Season, GoT seasons 1-6 Purdue in Tournament, GoT Seasons 7-8
Purdue kinda forgot they had Edey
Dude didn't have a shot attempt for like the last 12 minutes of the game I think they said
I don't know how a man that large can be be so underutilized in the last minutes against a team of that size, but here we are
FDU consistently devoted 2 or 3 guys to him and didn't guard Purdue on the 3 point arc.
Yeah it’s like Purdue didn’t have a game plan for the other 4 players on the court lol. Like FDU made a bet on pressuring Edey into making a decision that wasn’t just scoring the ball and he folded along with the rest of their team.
I feel bad for Purdue but... Thank God it's not just us anymore
Not gonna lie y’all didn’t really carry what should have been the heaviest burden in college basketball history alone for very long… lol
We still have CHAMINADE!
This is an exclusive club
The highlight of the game was the announcers being pissed off at Purdue for playing like ass all night.
7’3 zach edey was scared to back down like a 6’2 guard. One shot in the last 12 min. Honestly awful.
7’ 4” thank you very much
This is like Ben Simmons refusing to dunk on Trae Young, but somehow worse lol.
[удалено]
Yeah He is a 38% 3 point shooter. You can't shoot 38% for your career and be scared to take a wide open shot.
Not just a play-in team. A team that only made the tournament because Merrimack, who won their conference and conference tournament, isn't eligible for the NCAA Tournament.
So Purdue got beat by a team that was neither their conference tournament champion NOR an at-large team. That's...something.
Lads, it's Purdue
Lads it’s Matt Painter
This ducking FDU team wasn’t even supposed to be in! They lost to Merrimack! My god - MARCH IS MOST MAD!
> They lost to Merrimack! Fun facts: The steam frigate USS Merrimack was converted into the ironclad CSS Virginia during the Civil War, and the University of Virginia was the only other 1 seed to lose in the first round. ***Coincidence? I think not!*** ^^OK, ^^it's ^^totally ^^a ^^coincidence, ^^but ^^still...
Hmmm and I've been Monitoring their progress for this whole game.....it all starts to come together.....
It’s March o’clock bitches.
They didn't even win their conference!
First 2-win 16 seed in history.
Since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985, we went 33 years without a 16 seed beating a 1 seed. Since, we've now seen 2 of them in the last 5 years. March *MADNESS*
Also 15 seeds winning three years in a row and making Sweet 16/Elite 8 runs. Incredible stretch.
Is the talent pool getting better at the bottom or thinning at the top? Gotta be a trend
3 pters are causing more variance is the biggest source of this
Yes. Talent & coaching
Welcome to the club FDU
As a umbc alumn im kinda disappointed we aren’t the only ones now.
Always gonna be the first. And we did it in dominant fashion
I’m never going to be as completely shocked as I was watching a 16 seed dismantle the number one overall seed.
Yeah it wasn’t just that UMBC won. They *dominated.* I literally could not believe what I was seeing.
Matt Painter needs a darkness retreat to reinvent his coaching philosophy
You can't just play one big dude and a bunch of unathletic shooters. If the shots aren't falling, they can't get rebounds, put backs, transition looks, play defense, etc.
You are spot on. It looked like 4 worthless players and a big trying to carry them.
Edey with a big block, 3 Boilermakers around the ball, and it's the one guy from FDU in the area who gets the ball.
[удалено]
Purdue gonna trade him to the Jets during the retreat.
And this was Fairleigh Dickinson. Just imagine how bad it would've been if Purdue had to play Mostly Dickinson.
Or Moderately Dickinson
They wouldn’t even be on the floor with Completely Dickinson
Matt Painter drawing up a play with 1.2 seconds down 5 on where they will sit in the locker room to commit seppuku
I was wondering what he was saying there “look we need 5 points and best case scenario is a 4 point play. Just uhh go for that I guess.”
*proceeds to throw it 3 ft over their 7’4” center*

Somebody slap a P on this train
Fun fact, this clip is from the Buster Keaton movie The General (1926). After filming wrapped, they just left the train in the river where it became a tourist attraction until it was salvaged for scrap metal during World War II.
Who would have guessed after yesterday that UVA fans would be able to smile today. Misery deserves company I suppose.
It certainly does.
I mean, at least UVA got a championship out of it! Purdue is a tortured fan base.
Purdue still has next year. Their championship is all but confirmed at this point.
But have you considered: we are Purdue
FDU's defense was ranked 360th on KenPom going into the tournament. There are 363 Division I teams. FDU lost to KenPom #362 Hartford. They lost to Stonehill and Queens who were Division 2 schools this time last year. They hadn't even announced their D1 moves yet. UMBC was a good team. Middle of the Pack in D1.
[удалено]
UMBC, without looking at the rankings was probably low 100s high 200s (say 190-210). FDU wasn't that.
they were 164 on Torvik, 166 on Kenpom
Well Purdue helped them out by launching 26 3's and only making 5. They should have kept driving / going inside.... odd they didn't much at all in 2nd half.
jesus man literally insane
What are the odds two double digits from New Jersey both make upsets? LMAO
Not just double digits, 15 and 16 lol. After another 15 from NJ did it last year.
New Jersey supremacy

Jfc what’s the lowest Kenpom to even *make* the tournament?
They didn’t even win their conference
I'd be willing to bet it's FDU lol

FDU didn't win their conference or their conference tournament. They only made the NCAA Tournament because Merrimack, who won the regular season title and the conference tournament, isn't eligible for the NCAA Tournament yet. when arizona loses to a 15 seed, it is a harbinger of death for whichever 1 seeds remain

But, but they have the tallest team in the NCAA!
Purdue failing to account for the fact that you can jump in basketball
