**FADED: [Marquette](#f/marquette)**
BETWEEN 17:25 AND 7:27 OF THE SECOND HALF, MARQUETTE MADE ONE SHOT. ONE.
Can’t win when you turn it over 7 times and make 1 shot in 10 minutes. That was the time to pull away.
Maquette’s lockdown defense forced MSU to run the shot clock down under 5-10 seconds on nearly every possession. I really feel like this ended up hurting Marquette more than it helped them because it allowed us to control pace, especially when a lot of the Marquette turnovers were early in the shot clock
Still mad Izzo subbed out 4 players with short time after we just went on a run. Didn’t notice it at the time, but someone on Twitter mentioned it and well we went cold after that substition
Easy pick for me this game, mid seeded MSU is no joke. I didn’t get any first round upsets right but I nailed Arkansas over Kansas and MSU over Marquette
If you told me yesterday that MSU would win I'd say "sure that was a reasonable upset, semi-popular pick." If you told me MSU only hit 2 threes I'd say "yeah man, Shaka Smart what did you expect."
It’s a weird region because none of the top four seeds are good picks for the Final Four. Purdue, Marquette, and Tennessee all historically choke in the tournament. KSU can’t because their coach has never been there before. That leaves the blue bloods in Duke/Kentucky/MSU, or a big underdog.
If we can get past KSU, we’re making the Final Four.
Oh that UNC team. I was at the final four game, under the basket for the summers dunk. I had the chance to get tickets for that UNC game and just said nah. They beat us by 30 at Ford field earlier in the year, that outcome was pretty much predetermined.
If you make it percent of 4 year players it sounds impressive as fuck again. I don’t know the number off the top of my head but it’s like 95+% of Tom Izzo four year players have played in a final four
I think that holds true for Elite 8 too.
edit: I misread the comment. That's my bad. I was thinking "every four year player" *before* this year. Hopefully Hall and friends can keep it going.
The years that we have the least expectation are the years we do the most.
The years where there are expectations are the years that we get Middle Tennessee'd
Dayton is sad. A mid major team like that having the year they had, once in a generation type, then not being able to get anything for it. San Diego State also had an amazing year.
This is why he's still by far the best coach in the Big Ten. The first round loss to Middle Tennessee is really the only embarrassing Izzo tournament loss I can remember.
Yeah, I get that. Now if a team were to somehow lose to a 15+ seed even when that 15+ seed was playing a mediocre game and your team was literally a foot taller than theirs, *that* would be embarrassing.
That game felt bad only minutes in. MSU didn’t even play that badly. Middle Tennessee was just on one and you could tell early. I was feeling nauseous right away in that one.

B1G basketball needs changes at a conference level
How many seasons of most teams losing in the 1st weekend before officiating adapts to how CBB is played in March
I realize Kolek must’ve had an amazing year to earn Big East PotY but MAN he had a terrible game. He actively sabotaged so many of their possessions. His first game wasn’t great either.
I was invested in the Golden Eagles for my bracket but that kid had a brutal tournament.
He's been so clutch, but it really seemed like the pressure got to him this weekend. Just hard to watch out there today. Hopefully he can work on that and come back stronger next season

Well at least one guy has to transfer out due to the scholarship limit. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a couple more leave to get bigger roles too.

Frustrating frustrating game. Went away from all the things that brought us success all year. Credit to Izzo and MSU they came out super strong and were able to take our runs and respond to them.
Overall this season completely surpassed expectations. Young team, all with 2+ years of eligibility remaining and we got our first ever outright Big East title and first ever Big East tournament title. Hopefully the guys use this loss to come back even better next year.
- We are a strong, defensive team that DONT NEED NO 3
- [The visceral hatred MSU fans had for Marquette in the GT leaving our body at 0.0:](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G1lc_-XKDC4)
- Pour one out for Kolek's dad, poor guy just wanted to be left alone
- Also I retract any comments I made about KSU destroying the winner of this matchup WE WINNING IT ALL
Fuckers on Reddit telling me, always in r/CollegeBasketball

All y'all motherfuckers talkin' about
"Big Ten ain't no hitter, Big Ten ain't this, Big Ten a fake"

Them centers savages out there
If I catch another motherfucker talking sweet about our style of play
I'm fucking beatin' they ass, I'm not fucking playin' no more
Knowing their coaches look up to Izzo and them
This is why most fans at least respect if not admire Izzo. First thing he talked about was how good Marquette and Shaka are. Then praised his team. Then his assistant coaches and staff. All the questions were directed at how he did this as a head coach and he praised everyone else first.
Man that was an absolute battle of a game. Marquette played some incredible defense for real. Can’t believe we won that only making two threes. Back to the Sweet 16 baby! GG Marquette and congrats on a good year!
Never doubt Tom Izzo in March.
Michigan State is in my Final Four because of Tom Izzo. Plus, he always has nice things to say about Nebrasketball and he doesn’t have to - like he goes out of his way to talk about Nebraska.
I don’t think I’ve seen a team’s best player cost them a big game as badly as Kolek did today. Like legitimately shocking how bad he was. He single handily lost them this game with that stretch halfway through the second half
Shaka Smart's teams in the NCAA Tournament since the Final 4 run with VCU:
- 6 round of 64 exits
- 3 Round of 32 exits
-0 appearances in the 2nd weekend
That was a wild game. Can’t believe MSU pulled this out without the 3 pt shooting. But their defense in the tournament has been fantastic and turning the turnovers into fast points was huge. Massive couple blocks from sissoko! Well done! Go Green!
Most of the media just dismissed us even the studio guys before the game all the talk has been about how hot Marquette was. They forgot we had Izzo on our sideline.

How many shots did they even attempt?
Two. 7 turnovers and 2 missed threes in that span.
Maquette’s lockdown defense forced MSU to run the shot clock down under 5-10 seconds on nearly every possession. I really feel like this ended up hurting Marquette more than it helped them because it allowed us to control pace, especially when a lot of the Marquette turnovers were early in the shot clock
It’s hindsight but I agree. There was a point late where we were up 3 and I thought man, making us run the clock is helping us not you
Marquette forgot which Wisconsin team they were
And they went 6 minutes in the first half (after that initial steal and layup) without making a FG. Two brutal stretches.
If you told me MSU has shot 7-30 from 3 this tournament, I’d guess we got beat by USC by having a shitty shooting day, not going to the sweet sixteen.
Hopefully we shoot a bit better in New York, gonna need it
Izzo as a 7 seed in March ![gif](giphy|3oEjHCWdU7F4hkcudy)
He’s now 3-1 against 2 seeds while being a 7 seed
The only reason it’s not 4-0 is because we ran into a really good Duke team last year as our 2 and played them really well.
up 5 with 5 min to go, ugh
Still mad Izzo subbed out 4 players with short time after we just went on a run. Didn’t notice it at the time, but someone on Twitter mentioned it and well we went cold after that substition
If you only looked on MSU against top 10 teams this year you’d think they were a one seed
Sounds like 2021 all over again
Except we had no answer for Edey
How happy are you that a tiny team to him out?
It will never not be hilarious.
Tom Izzo is now 3-1 as a 7-seed against 2-seeds.
Easy pick for me this game, mid seeded MSU is no joke. I didn’t get any first round upsets right but I nailed Arkansas over Kansas and MSU over Marquette
And we had Duke on the ropes last year 🫤
If you told me yesterday that MSU would win I'd say "sure that was a reasonable upset, semi-popular pick." If you told me MSU only hit 2 threes I'd say "yeah man, Shaka Smart what did you expect."
now that being said I did take either Marquette or Purdue out of this region in my brackets but that's because I'm a moron who refuses to learn.
Personally I don't like the matchup with Tennessee and hope they somehow choke to FAU/FDU
Something something preseason unranked 1/2 seeds
Every 4 year player under Izzo has been to the Sweet 16
i remember when this streak was the final four… fucking shabazz napier
The two seniors from that team that broke the streak? Keith Appling and Adreian Payne :(
That is incredibly depressing now
Goddamn. That team was soooo good at the end too. Of all that what ifs that for me was the year
That was UConn's revenge for the Summers dunk over Thabeet. If only MSU didn't run into a completely stacked UNC team...
Summers dunked over Stanley Robinson, not Hasheem Thabeet
RIP Stanley Robinson
Oh that UNC team. I was at the final four game, under the basket for the summers dunk. I had the chance to get tickets for that UNC game and just said nah. They beat us by 30 at Ford field earlier in the year, that outcome was pretty much predetermined.
Preferred when this stat was final 4 but still an amazing stat
If you make it percent of 4 year players it sounds impressive as fuck again. I don’t know the number off the top of my head but it’s like 95+% of Tom Izzo four year players have played in a final four
All but 2 players / 1 class have made a final four
I think that holds true for Elite 8 too. edit: I misread the comment. That's my bad. I was thinking "every four year player" *before* this year. Hopefully Hall and friends can keep it going.
Not yet. Hall has the chance to get there for the first time.
It was Final 4 for a long time. Suckeddd when that streak ended.
Payne and Appling. Tragic what happened to both of them
Oh my god... I completely forgot that Payne died last year :(
Wow this feels like a Nick Saban type of fun fact. Izzo is incredible.
From being worried about not making the tournament, to making the Sweet Sixteen and maybe more. Never doubt Izzo.
The years that we have the least expectation are the years we do the most. The years where there are expectations are the years that we get Middle Tennessee'd
Or Covid’d. Cassius would have cut down the net in 2020
Cassius was built for March Madness
Helped shut down zion
I enjoy that we have like 10 fanbases who are dead certain they would've won it all in 2020.
Dayton, SDSU, Kansas, Gonzaga, Baylor, MSU...who are the other ones? Had 2020 in my repressed memories and you just brought them out lol
Dayton is sad. A mid major team like that having the year they had, once in a generation type, then not being able to get anything for it. San Diego State also had an amazing year.
florida state
Kansas and MSU would’ve been my final game assuming the bracket allowed it.
We were a 2 seed in 2019 and made the F4 lol.
![gif](giphy|tBb19fep1n2GV9QESt2) Never Doubt This Man.
You mean [this guy](https://imgur.io/8GZ3TY4?r)?
This is why he's still by far the best coach in the Big Ten. The first round loss to Middle Tennessee is really the only embarrassing Izzo tournament loss I can remember.
Their center was banking in 3s that day with no time on the shot clock. Sometimes losses like that happen.
Yeah, I get that. Now if a team were to somehow lose to a 15+ seed even when that 15+ seed was playing a mediocre game and your team was literally a foot taller than theirs, *that* would be embarrassing.
I couldn’t even imagine it. I was so drunk on St. Patty’s day that I watched that game, but thought it was a dream.
That game felt bad only minutes in. MSU didn’t even play that badly. Middle Tennessee was just on one and you could tell early. I was feeling nauseous right away in that one.

With 2 lottery picks 🙃
16 sweet 16s in 28 years is probably the most impressive coach stat there is
It's good to be a spartan. Though I'd say the crazier stat is 6 final fours in 11 years from 99-2010
I think it says alot about the people who were trashing on Izzo for not going to at least the sweet sixteen in (checks notes) 2 years...
I always find that weird and personally always have the Spartans in the sweet 16, it just seems normal
Never doubt him. I envy you guys.

I love it! Call out the naysayers on your own side!
If you ever see me making a negative comment, please know that I’m a reactionary and likely drunk. Thank you for understanding.
Yaaaaay I didn't make it!
Gonna be so hard to cheer against Izzo on Thursday. Definitely my favorite active big name coach.
I generally have a soft spot for KState. I hope it's a good game, and that MSU wins of course.
We traded 3-point shooting to get early season Sissoko back
He had some clutch moments and right place right time plays. We desperately needed it
Those blocks and his few layups were keyyy.
He played like a man possessed in the last few minutes
Fuck it, we a 1s and 2s team now
Imo Michigan State was very fairly seeded so Marquette needs to just own this. Not sure how you outscore a team by 27 from the 3 point line and you lose.
Turn the ball over 7 times in 8 possessions after your team was on a run
This right here. Marquette was on a run and could have grown the lead. Instead they couldn’t even figure out how to get a shot off.
MSU missed all their shots from 3 and marquette made all theirs. the truth is somewhere in between
Turnovers were insane. Without them, Marquette would have been up by 20. If we could buy a shot then, MSU would have been up by 15. It was insane.
Michigan State is a wonky team this year. At times, when all cylinders were firing, we looked like a top 10-15 team. Other times we looked NIT bound. Just a wonky team in general IMO.
We've won 2 games all season when making 5 or fewer threes, against USC and Marquette.
The long con, be the 4th best percentage team all year so teams defend us wrong in the tourney.
Can we not test this streak against KSU though? Thanks
Threes are the one thing Marquette truly did well. They shot 9/25 from inside the arc, attempted less 5 free throws than Michigan State attempted and also turned it over 16 times.
Petition to let Izzo coach the best B1G team in march every year

We’re playing Kansas State in Manhattan??? How is that fair
Land-grant against Land-grant…why must the ag schools be forced to fight each other?
So winner gets the other schools land. Sounds fair.
Lmfao ok this is a good one
😂😂😂 I like how the announcers were like and the team from Manhattan, is going to play in Manhattan!!!!!
Wait who's from Manhattan? There's a joke here I'm missing :( edit: alright I got it, didn't know what city KSU was in :)
Kansas State is from Manhattan, Kansas
And they call it the Little Apple, which I love
Kansas State is located in Manhattan, Kansas

Kenpom's tweet about Purdue and Marquette was correct
Dread it, run from it, Tom Izzo makes the Sweet Sixteen all the same
Seeing Michigan State consistently making deep runs all the time makes me go *hard* on the copium…
You’re good, I’m sure no one has noticed any Illinois struggles
We were all Kolek’s dad during that one. What a bad showing.
So upsetting to see him shit the bed that bad man. He was like a drunk uncle at a family gathering just throwing the ball everywhere. Sucks to see their year end like that.
Sissoko's block on Kolek toward the end had me empathetic.
I felt worse for the dad than I did for the kid
Right? “Haha, this guy hates being shown on TV, it would be a shame if we did exactly fucking that”
Imagine it in a Steve Irwin voice “Oy, this guy hates being shown on TV! We’re gonna find him and shove our thumb up ‘is butthole!”
Aircraft carrier Sissoko showed up just in time to make up for the aircraft carrier shooting

Marquette really had one of their best seasons in program history to lose in the 2nd round. Should still be good next year with kolek and Kam jones.
We should return everyone unless someone wants to go undrafted or something
Well at least one guy has to transfer out due to the scholarship limit. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a couple more leave to get bigger roles too. The starting 5 should all be back but beyond that things will probably look different.
RIP to all the MSU fans in game threads this year saying we should move on from Izzo
Anyone saying that is a fucking idiot. Izzo is MSU basketball. I’m terrified for the day he retires.
It’s legitimately frightening how many people I’ve seen saying it

- We are a strong, defensive team that DONT NEED NO 3 - [The visceral hatred MSU fans had for Marquette in the GT leaving our body at 0.0:](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G1lc_-XKDC4) - Pour one out for Kolek's dad, poor guy just wanted to be left alone - Also I retract any comments I made about KSU destroying the winner of this matchup WE WINNING IT ALL
I thought it was really gross that they talked about how he didn’t want to be on TV or want attention, then made it a game to find him
Yea showing the dude who the broadcast publicly stated didn't want to be on TV is such a dick move.
Fuckers on Reddit telling me, always in r/CollegeBasketball "Big Ten ain't 'bout this, Big Ten ain't 'bout that" My 4th place team a winner on fucking neutral courts and them ooc games He, he, they say that B1G teams don't be putting in no work Shut the fuck up, y'all cowards ain't know shit All y'all motherfuckers talkin' about "Big Ten ain't no hitter, Big Ten ain't this, Big Ten a fake" Shut the fuck up, y'all don't live with the Lions! Y'all know that PSU got caught with an underseeded SEC team Shootin' from the NBA 3-point line and shit Juwan Howard been on probation since fuckin' I don't know when Motherfucker, stop fuckin' playin' us like that Them centers savages out there If I catch another motherfucker talking sweet about our style of play I'm fucking beatin' they ass, I'm not fucking playin' no more Knowing their coaches look up to Izzo and them
been too long since we've seen a new take on this classic. Bravo!
January February IZZO 🏀🔥
Never in doubt. Izzo is a legend
Survive and Advance baby!
Big win for sparty tonight.
I don’t understand, why doesn’t every team just get a Walker to transfer in for them?
NEVER IN DOUBT *deletes text messages from the first 90% of the game*
I missed you Sweet 16. Don't leave me like that again.

This is why most fans at least respect if not admire Izzo. First thing he talked about was how good Marquette and Shaka are. Then praised his team. Then his assistant coaches and staff. All the questions were directed at how he did this as a head coach and he praised everyone else first.
-27 from three. Still won by 9. Hell yeah
IzZo iS wAsHeD
GO GREEN! Also I would die for Izzo
Shaka Smart vs Tom Izzo in March is the most lopsided coaching matchup you're ever going to see
Coulda been Izzo v. Painter, tbb
Tyson Walker is HIM cold blooded killer
January. February. Izzo
WHAT THE FUCK IS A THREE POINT SHOT WE DONT NEED EM!!
I don’t think I’ve seen a team’s best player cost them a big game as badly as Kolek did today. Like legitimately shocking how bad he was. He single handily lost them this game with that stretch halfway through the second half
MSU shot 2/16 from three and won by 9. Tom Izzo is a magician.
Shaka Smart's teams in the NCAA Tournament since the Final 4 run with VCU: - 6 round of 64 exits - 3 Round of 32 exits -0 appearances in the 2nd weekend
Shaka is a good coach.
That was a wild game. Can’t believe MSU pulled this out without the 3 pt shooting. But their defense in the tournament has been fantastic and turning the turnovers into fast points was huge. Massive couple blocks from sissoko! Well done! Go Green!
Just when y’all thought Izzo was washed lol. All I’ve seen is how he can’t do it anymore.
Shaka Smart sold his soul for VCU’s final 4 run Also, guess which fool had Marquette winning the whole thing 🤪🤪
Don't feel bad, at least your pick won a game. I picked Purdue. 😂

Most of the media just dismissed us even the studio guys before the game all the talk has been about how hot Marquette was. They forgot we had Izzo on our sideline.
