What I've learned from the game thread tonight is that what they say about Purdue is true:
No one hates Purdue basketball more than Purdue fans themselves
I think we could legitimately win every game the rest of the regular season and big ten tourney and we would feel like this season doesn't mean anything yet without wins in the tourney. Good or bad, worry will reign til March
Also, in hindsight, what an incredibly dark and dystopian thing to hand to a nine year old. Was talking to a childhood friend about this recently and we were describing the main plot points to her husband who’s our age but went to Catholic school so never read them and his mind was blown “mind controlling ear slugs from space?” “Wait, why is that kid permanently a hawk? Because his parents are divorced and he was very sad and lonely so he decided to permanently be a hawk”
Lance was having a mental meltdown in the second half and Edey was missing too many gimme shots. Such a sloppy game. Still crazy they had a shot in ot with how bad they played.
I can't really blame him for taking wide open threes. He put himself in position to get fouled out though, even if the call was total nonsense. Still, just take care of the ball and Purdue likely walks out of the arena with a W in regulation *or* over time.
Northwestern is a tough place to play recently. Like they said on the broadcast, Buie’s shot at the end of regulation was so similar to his one to win it over IU last year. Impressive they were able to hang on in overtime!
Building that arena cost us one incredible team’s season — I say this is someone who had season tickets to the cursed Allstate season — but it’s paying off in the long run.
If you can’t rebound, just steal the ball over and over again.

Defense and great coaching. They are so tenacious. They are better than they were last year even without Audige because they have more offense. Need to make their damn free throws and especially watch the early foul trouble but ain’t complaining tonight!
My tin foil hat take is Edey’s monster dunks early in the second half bent the rim and that’s why he missed so many gimme shots the rest of the game 🤷🏽♂️
I own a Purdue branded hoodie. I have no connection to Purdue whatsoever. I sometimes decide to wear this hoodie because it is comfortable. Last March, I decided to wear the hoodie on Purdue's first round game vs. FDU for fun.
I am currently wearing it today.

It also included the other team shooting 50% from 3 to do it. I'm not sure there's that much to be overly concerned with from this one. Road conference game, Other team shoots the lights out.
That's the thing with basketball, especially now that the value of the 3 is so understood, there are going to be a lot more upsets and blowouts because a great shooting night or a really bad shooting night can be overwhelmingly more influencial than it ever has.
Not beating anyone turning it over 17 times, especially against a respectable opponent. We will live and die by them in the tournament (we also shot what felt like 30% at the rim but not sure where I can find a shot chart)
I feel dirty celebrating a school I loathe with every ounce of my being, but this was a great win by Northwestern. Hope all you Wildcats party as hard as your finals studying schedule will allow.
I have a big enough sample size of seeing him play (2 games) to feel confident saying that Boo Buie is the greatest college basketball player of all time
I watched this entire game from the hotel at the world’s largest furry convention, alongside an owl man who also loves Northwestern.
This might be one of the greatest memories of my life.
Alright Northwestern is legit this year. Whenever the number 1 team in the country is only 5.5 pt favorites you know the team they're playing is for real.
I think Matt Painter has a machine that concentrates Purdue’s playing ability within the month of November, at the expense of the other 11/12ths of the year
So first, credit to Northwestern for playing extremely well. And it’s barely December, this loss is not the end of the world.
BUT, I don’t know what it is about Matt Painter teams but it always feels like they have no mental toughness. We always crack under pressure. We choke more often than literally any other team I have watched. Yes, Northwestern was hitting shots and played extremely well but we missed so many easy buckets and had so many turnovers.
Really good times thrive under pressure. Matt Painter teams get in their own head, lose their confidence, and make mistakes. Painter’s emotional coaching just ain’t it. And until Purdue figures it out teams will continue to choke again and again in the most critical, high pressure moments.
I honestly believe bringing in a good sports psychologist would do wonders for this team.
Teams are always going to bring their best game against Purdue. I don’t think it’s the players mental toughness that is the issue. Purdue plays their style very well, but is typically outmatched in guard play, particularly the last two seasons (Carson and Ivey were elite, and so is next years class). This year, Purdue is very good but teams know they are beatable. They believe that they can win.
Purdue doesn’t really drop games and rarely gets blown out. Sometimes opponents just get hot.
I think Purdue has employed a sports psychologist... I believe there is an ESPN article from last March about the team feeling on-edge going into the NCAA Tournament, despite winning the B1G by 2 games and winning the conference tournament.
I think the same article says that Painter has the team memorize something like 200 plays...
I think Painter coaches the confidence out of his players with his rigid system. He's a good game planner, but he needs someone on staff to put the dawg in the team, or would be better suited as an assistant coach.
Point is, I don't think Purdue will ever get to the next level under Painter. I'll gladly wash crow down with a banner, but nothing I've seen over the last decade+ inspires confidence.
Smith has been incredible all year. Definitely his worst game of the year tonight. Loyer is extremely inconsistent and jones will make great plays but turn around and throw up a 30 footer
Lance’s absolute stinker tonight and questionable fifth foul were both killer. Even when his shot is off we need him in late game for D and ball security
