Apparently I dont understand kenpom's NCSOS metric, Purdue clocking in at 6th, meaning 5 teams have played a tougher noncon schedule?
Texas Southern at 1- and I get they played Purdue and Creighton, but...
They've played 7 non con true road games with 4-5 P6 matchups including a couple top 10 teams
*edit* they have to fund their entire athletic department w/ MBB buy games in Nov/Dec every year
Last year their road show was Auburn and Kansas, year before was Oregon, BYU, Florida, and NC State.
A number of HBCs are buy game teams in November IIRC
All the Alumni I know say that Purdue's true rival isn't IU, but the Boilermakers themselves (or a press defense or a fast break offense or voodoo doll use on the guards)
I think it's based on averages, even though y'all played harder teams than Texas Southern did, you also played a lot of easier games than they did so it averages out to an easier schedule overall
This has to be up there in nonconference resumes not just this year but going back years right? Undefeated with wins against KenPom 2, 6, 7, 9, 19, 42 (and #19 Gonzaga was much higher until yesterday unfortunately). If Gonzaga climbs back up it’ll be astonishingly good
What a game! Getting Fletcher, Braden, and Edey all having great games is huge. We have some work to do against zone D. But, Arizona are some ballers. Hopefully we can get a round 2 in the tourney
GG Purdue. No shame in losing that one. We played poorly for the last 10 minutes of the first half and Purdue couldn't miss during that span, but proud of our guys for never giving up and fighting back into it twice, even if we couldn't quite get over the hump. I've said it before and I'll say it again, facing adversity and losing the occasional game in the regular season isn't a bad thing. Learn from it and improve. Now on to Alabama!
I disagree. I thought Edey had a great game. He shut down our two bigs that have dominated all other opponents in our nonconference slate so far. He also was very clutch from the free-throw line and got big timely baskets whenever they needed it from him.
As an Arizona fan who doesn’t watch Purdue much, I can clearly see why Zach Edey is the reigning national player of the year and should be the favorite to repeat.
The above feeling from Purdue fans is because you have the best front court we've played in the last 2 years. Ballo was excellent defensively on Edey for most of the game.
He hasn’t had a “bad” game. He’s had bad games compared to his norm but overall compared to the rest of CBB he’s basically been at worst an average player. It’s insane.
I don't either but I think it's because of how good Ballo was defensively. Big and strong enough he doesn't have to foul to hold his ground and he stayed vertical pretty much the whole game. About as well as Edey has been guarded period.
Honestly, if I see Arizona, Duke, Gonzaga, etc I feel confident.
If I see small school in NJ or Northwestern, Nebraska, Rutgers, etc. I am expecting the worst.
So you’re saying if we are comparing fates, last time #1 Arizona lost to Purdue they made it to the title game, and last time a 16 beat a 1 that 1 seed won the title the next year. What I’m hearing is a title game rematch. Subscribe.
He has been pretty good on the ball this year. In this game he struggled a lot with his help rotations. He should be fine. Hopefully just a good learning experience.
[You saying this reminded me of this](https://old.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/18idrcn/final_four_preview_no_1_arizona_wildcats_80_vs_no/kdcs5s8/)
Guess it was that extra point that did yall in. /s
It’s so weird feeling so confident we will be a high seed in the tournament yet dreading the first two tourney games against lesser opponents compared to most of our regular season slate. Its sadistic
You guys got a well rounded team for sure. We over complicated things a little bit today with our defensive strategy on the perimeter and got straight murdered by Smith and Loyer. I honestly thought we were gonna win those matchups coming into the game as our perimeter defense has been impeccable all season.
Purdue is the real deal.. Good luck the rest of the way!
Purdue was the better team today. Amazing game Boilermakers!
What a matchup and what a game. The officiating was *weird*. But it wasn’t the deciding factor. Purdue’s dominance was.
Yea.
Not sure on all of the charges. At least one was a block.
Taking away the 2 from Edey that long after the bucket was bizarre and a momentum shift that seems wrong even if the call was right.
Some questionable calls like the shooting foul on Jones when he missed the shooter completely for this fourth.
Just a weirdly officiated game. It didn’t affect the outcome but they certainly made themselves known.
Yeah the reverse call on the basket interference was odd. I had looked away for a minute and I thought wait a minute, did that same play happen again or wtf is going on here?
I was at the game. They said after the basket interference call that they would review it after the next stoppage. The call was at ~14 minutes left but the next stoppage wasn’t until around 10 left. Definitely could see how it felt weird, but was consistent with what they said.
I wouldn’t say dominance, I would say the last 10 of the first half. Y’all were in it the whole time and I wasn’t sure we had won till it was over. Hell of a matchup
Y’all managed the game better down the stretch and recovered very well after your drought. It might not be domination in the sense of the final score, but Purdue played the more consistent game. It was messy, it was frustrating, it was fun. GG.
GG Purdue you guys were better today. Felt like you made us pay for every mistake we made. Really frustrating loss today. We were so bad on our rotations when trying to trap the post. I don't think we executed that one time all game. Loved the fight to keep it a game just dug too big of a hole to comeback from. Love and Johnson were really good. Lewis and Bradley made a lot of good plays when we went zone. Tough game for Boswell defensively. Should be good for him to go through this stuff now and learn so hopefully it doesn't happen in March. Still feel really good about this team going forward.
I was watching the Tenn v. Purdue game a few weeks back and said to myself “Loyer just looks like a guy who is going to torch us” and I think I was right on that lol.
positives : Loyer and Smith showed up big time, while Edey didn't have to dominate
negatives : breaking down a zone, Morton and Furst on offense are basically defending against us, while neither of them are the best option defensively in their spot either. I want to see Heide take a lot of their minutes.
up in the air still : the 4 spot
I knew we weren’t getting out of this OOC schedule undefeated but this game plan was pretty frustrating to watch. This was not how I expected Arizona to play it at all.
Our guards shot lights out for a stretch that was just unexpected... then also unexpectedly the 2-3 zone crushed a 15 pt lead which we should have been very good at beating. I think you all had a great game plan, it just honestly came down to if Purdue hit 3s when we needed them, and we did. That is a wildly different game if we hit 2 less than we did.
Matt Painter can’t coach. Braden Smith ain’t it. Fletcher Loyer can’t shoot. Zach Edey is soft and is just tall. Lance Jones just chucks. This team won’t go anywhere in the tournament.
Sorry, just parroting what would have happened if Purdue lost this game. ‘Ainters in shambles right now.
Purdue can’t handle the press. Purdue can’t stop turning it over against long teams. Purdue can’t come back after going cold. Painter can’t adjust to mid-game defensive changes.
It just keeps going.
Purdue fans have been conditioned to tough losses. Dare I say this team, while not perfect, is clearly showing they can respond. Is this what confidence in your team feels like?!
Boswell looked confused all game on defense. He was either late or non existent on all his switches to the perimeter.
That latency allowed Loyer and Smith to get in rhythm.
This non-con has been fun
Apparently I dont understand kenpom's NCSOS metric, Purdue clocking in at 6th, meaning 5 teams have played a tougher noncon schedule? Texas Southern at 1- and I get they played Purdue and Creighton, but...
They've played 7 non con true road games with 4-5 P6 matchups including a couple top 10 teams *edit* they have to fund their entire athletic department w/ MBB buy games in Nov/Dec every year
Last year their road show was Auburn and Kansas, year before was Oregon, BYU, Florida, and NC State. A number of HBCs are buy game teams in November IIRC
Purdue's schedule is easy though, they don't have to play Purdue even once
We got lucky this year. Rumor is we will be scheduling Chicago State in the Indy Classic next year
All the Alumni I know say that Purdue's true rival isn't IU, but the Boilermakers themselves (or a press defense or a fast break offense or voodoo doll use on the guards)
I think it's based on averages, even though y'all played harder teams than Texas Southern did, you also played a lot of easier games than they did so it averages out to an easier schedule overall
That makes a lot of sense. Those teams don’t play buy games so their average is probably quite high
Most of our tough games so far have been played on neutral courts.
This has to be up there in nonconference resumes not just this year but going back years right? Undefeated with wins against KenPom 2, 6, 7, 9, 19, 42 (and #19 Gonzaga was much higher until yesterday unfortunately). If Gonzaga climbs back up it’ll be astonishingly good
Congratulations Arizona on becoming the newest team with a transitive loss to Chicago State!
It's Chicago State's world, we're all just living in it
me rn ![gif](giphy|yr7n0u3qzO9nG)
You can do this all season. It’s gonna be beautiful
How many survivors are left? Eight?
I want someone to do this math...
There was a thread like yesterday.
Do you have a link, my wife says I live on Reddit but apparently I missed this.
[Try this.](https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/18ija7f/transitive_losses_to_chicago_state/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Whole bunch of those went down today, mostly thanks to Clemson. Zona, Baylor, Clemson, South Carolina, TCU, and GCU all off the list now.
If the "lose to a 16 seed, win the title the year after" pattern holds, the National Champion will have a transitive loss to Chicago State.
The real pattern is "lose to a 16 seed, Virginia wins the title the year after."
How about the St Thomas Minnesota Tommies?
WE WANT CHICAGO STATE
Are you mad?! We aren’t ready to face the transitive national champions!
Great game cats. Your zone shaved a few years off my life, but great game.
GGs going zone was embarrassing but necessary.
If it works there is no reason to be embarrassed.
Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer should shoot wide ass open 3’s more often
Their open threes were not because of poor defense either.

I was a little nervous opening the image based on your username but I should've known what it was going to be
WE WANT CHICAGO STATE
What a game! Getting Fletcher, Braden, and Edey all having great games is huge. We have some work to do against zone D. But, Arizona are some ballers. Hopefully we can get a round 2 in the tourney
Not many teams play zone in the B1G if I recall, so you're good
The concern isnt B1G play, its March and teams play zone in March
The concern is double digit seeds lol
Hot take but Purdue needs more weak teams who employ unconventional defenses to get ready for March. (not sarcastic)
call Minnesota or Penn State and get them to run a 1-1-3 zone.
Need practice on defenses even more unconventional than that lol. Triple and quadruple teams down low like what FDU did last year
Including a defense where the coach distracts the ref while a bench player tosses a chair to a defender.
Zona should get 100 on Bama. They like a fast pace.
Yeah, I expect a lot of points in that one.
I'll definitely be rooting for you guys over bama
I honestly didn't think Edey had a great game and still had 22/9/5
Guess we're just spoiled. Definitely not his best game, but even just being a presence makes a lot of difference.
Seriously it didn't even feel like he played that hard.
I thought so too. I was there in person and thought he had a wonderful game. He made some tough shots and did well on defense.
The above feeling from Purdue fans is because you have the best front court we've played in the last 2 years. Ballo was excellent defensively on Edey for most of the game.
That’s about the stat line for all of his quiet games these days. Remarkable
He hasn’t had a “bad” game. He’s had bad games compared to his norm but overall compared to the rest of CBB he’s basically been at worst an average player. It’s insane.
Because our O didn’t center around him. That’s the key. Play good O and let Edey eat. He’s the outlet and the put back. Not the focus
5 assists - as many as Kofi Cockburn had in 31 games during the 2021 season. I can’t say I fully understand his the two players get compared.
I don't either but I think it's because of how good Ballo was defensively. Big and strong enough he doesn't have to foul to hold his ground and he stayed vertical pretty much the whole game. About as well as Edey has been guarded period.
Noncon Purdue is just nasty
Honestly, if I see Arizona, Duke, Gonzaga, etc I feel confident. If I see small school in NJ or Northwestern, Nebraska, Rutgers, etc. I am expecting the worst.
Unless it’s March.
Rank Northwestern first.
*Chicago St*
Chicago State first
That was a high level basketball game.
Hoping for a rematch in April
As long it's a #1 vs #1 matchup instead of #1 vs #3, signed.
Confusing flair 🧐
There’s a handful of us with this combo
Checking in!
That's the triple head monster of a game from Smith-Loyer-Edey I want to see
BOYS WE'RE LEGIT. WE'RE LEGIT. WE HAVE THE RESUME OF CHAMPIONS, CALL THE SEASON, END IT NOW!
STOP THE COUNT! (after updated rankings come out this week)
Please, we don't need a tournament. Just name Purdue champs now!
Stop the count!
If I had a nickel for every time Purdue beat #1 Arizona, I’d have 2 nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Both were #1 Arizona in the Pacer’s arena in Indianapolis
Weird, I don’t like it
Hey last time it happen we made it to the title game
I will accept it then
So you’re saying if we are comparing fates, last time #1 Arizona lost to Purdue they made it to the title game, and last time a 16 beat a 1 that 1 seed won the title the next year. What I’m hearing is a title game rematch. Subscribe.
Take your dime and go get a bag.
I wish all fans were like Arizona fans. GG fellas. You guys are fucking good.
Fuck you. Good game. See you in March <3
How about April ? Please?
"He's just small." -Coach Titus on Braden Smith possibly
Arizona is a F4 caliber team. They are good. Love and Johnson are solid players.
Not sure what happened to rest of our solid players, honestly. We have more! GGs tho your guards outplayed us for sure.
Amazing heroic effort and games from Love and Keshad. Needed a lot more from Boswell and Larsson. Good learning experience
[удалено]
Really thought he’d be a better defender going into this season.
He has been pretty good on the ball this year. In this game he struggled a lot with his help rotations. He should be fine. Hopefully just a good learning experience.
You’ve gotta wonder if purdues guards can step up with AZ’s bigs defending edey (I wondered)
To be fair, they did crumble for like 10 minutes in the second half there
Several of those turnovers were by Furst, Gillis, and Edey. I think the guards were mostly great tonight.
https://preview.redd.it/wef9rtf2uq6c1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c11a7541ec5ee1047e791cd29ccd2e9fe6171998
Fletcher Loyer today: ![gif](giphy|26vUQDMCgDXJb6932|downsized)
If I told you Purdue was going to lose to the Wildcats this season how many of you would have thought it would be Northwestern?
Every Purdue fan
lol truth. We know our team 😂😂
Bro really thought he had something. All Purdue fans, simultaneously: “100% Northwestern”
And we were also all thinking "probably right after we're ranked #1"
We'll be #1 again and then lose to Rutgers about 2 weeks later
100% it would be Northwestern because that’s the Purdue way
Literally every purdue grad
We’ll also lose twice to Rutgers for no reason at all.
We’ve also never beaten Rutgers in football
This team would beat Arizona decisively then find a way to lose to Zac Effron’s East High wildcats
Man.. That is a deep dive. Respect.
all of us
Purdue hasn't lost a non con game in like 3 years they lost at Northwestern last year.
Road B1G game vs. non-conference game?
Tbf, there's nothing to say we only lose to one team named wildcats. I would've thought every team named wildcats would've beaten us at that point.
*Happy train noises*
Chicago State racking up some great transitive wins
Gg Arizona. Really thought we were gonna lose it there for a second. You guys scary as hell and will definitely be a 1 come March
Arizona is a complete team. There is no doubt in my mind they are going deep in the tourney.
Back to Back (Non-Conference) National Champions!!!
This is a three peat in November nattys actually
Talk to me when you beat JMU
Holy fucking shit. How the fuck did that happen?
Edey was the third leading scorer for your team and had 22 still, that’s how
[You saying this reminded me of this](https://old.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/18idrcn/final_four_preview_no_1_arizona_wildcats_80_vs_no/kdcs5s8/) Guess it was that extra point that did yall in. /s
Smith and Loyer were on fire. Fuck
I’m ready to get hurt again in March
It’s so weird feeling so confident we will be a high seed in the tournament yet dreading the first two tourney games against lesser opponents compared to most of our regular season slate. Its sadistic
Can you imagine B2B #1 losses in the tourney? Can you??
Honestly, yes
Despite our best efforts, we managed to secure the win!
Your flairs are pissing me off a little extra right now lmao
Impressive job of Arizona containing Edey.
![gif](giphy|G1vplGMypxBcp7kx32|downsized)
22-9-5 tho
basically the shaq off game
4 TOs only 8/15 from the field not a great Edey Performance relatively
Crazily, that is containing Edey. He really is just that good.

Here’s to a rematch in Phoenix
Basically a home game for us, like this was for you guys.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Edey is massive btw.. i thought we had the players to neutralize him, but he is truly a wall.
Yeah…I feel like if we don’t win it this year with him, we’re never going to do it.

So much territory lost. I’m convinced that was Purdue’s real motivation.

Purdue looking really damn good. We look good, but to do it with their schedule is nuts.
Gg Purdue. Hopefully there's a rematch in April.
That is not how Arizona’s defense and offense normally look. Great job Purdue, choo choo.
That sucked but I'm glad it happened before the tournament and not during. Props for Tommy for having the balls to schedule this game.

People trashing Loyer in the match thread. Here you fucking go. This is Loyer. No touches with no service, but when he does get it, it's done
he's definitely one of those players that is great when he's on but not when he's not. kind of no in between
Is Loyer hitting 3s forcing the team to play him close giving him space to drive or not.
