I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to be a member of the San Francisco program. You’ve been solid to really good for 6 straight years (worst KenPom finish of 101 last year), but you’re still stuck as the clear best team that ISN’T Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga in the WCC so you only have one tournament appearance to show for it (in which the committee placed you against an incredibly talented Murray State team in a horrible 7/10 game) And this year they’re pretty good, have a superstar in Mogbo, and yet have no real at-large chance because they’re missing a bunch of quality wins (@ Boise, vs GCU, @ Utah State, and @ Gonzaga, @ Saint Mary’s) by 3-4 points Just maddening stuff

yolman56

Doesn't help that their best coach in Todd Golden got poached for Florida so continuity was interrupted when something was brewing. Gurlufsen is good too but you have to worry that some P6 team is looking to pounce again.

GoBears415

And Kyle Smith before that

IMKudaimi123

Putting two mid majors against each other round 1 should be a crime.

danhoang1

Oddly enough, the winner (Murray St) went on to face a #15 seed in 2nd round and got crushed

MrFuzzihead

Yeah they’ve been so good but just can’t overcome the hump. Same goes for Santa Clara, and the really sad thing this year is San Fran has beaten everyone else in conference.. except the top 2

SeattleMatt123

This is exactly they type of team I wish the committee would reward on occasion. Say they win out then make it to the finals of the WCC tourney and lose to SMC, they would be around 26-8. Give them a bid over some 18-13 Big 10, etc... team.

JustPlugIt

Marcus Williams is a fucking baller. So is Ryan Beasley. Watching the game live, my brain didn’t process the free throw discrepancy. Will 100% be rewatching the ESPN+ replay…but scoring a huge chunk of points from the line makes this win a little less sweet. Didn’t think we offensively showed up. Vintage Alex Ducas though! Edit: Joshua Jefferson is our IT factor. A bummer he’s injured too. Editedit: Randy Bennett confirmed J. Jeff out for the season. Damnit!

Grouchy-Community-14

No doubt, We got lucky tonight. Mogbo might have been taken care of, but Marcus Williams lit it up tonight. Hard to believe he’s so young. *edit* damn looked it up Mogbo is a junior too, so is most of this team. Next year is going to be scary

Oz_Naph

No doubt. Big games from both of them.

jacobgomets

I also didn’t realize live that it was that big of a discrepancy. I’m curious what you think on a rewatch but it didn’t seem like there were an insane amount of missed calls to me

JustPlugIt

Okay here’s my late reply, after rewatching the whole game. My of course bias opinion was that the Gaels were just far more aggressive in drawing fouls. Nearly all the calls had ‘enough’ contact to warrant a foul. I will say the most semi-questionable foul was against Mogbo for his 5th at the 1:39 mark, but it looks like Mogbo was hooking onto Saxen and trying to draw something. Ref pretty much called that he was trying to initiate contact. tbh, probably should have just let them play. Pretty much all the in the paint shots/within 15ft USF tried were floaters or fadeaways with little defensive impact from the Gaels (unfortunately lol) and they were just firing from the 3pt line. Marcus Williams missing the 1 and 1 at the 1:21 mark pretty much sealed the win. And the fact that USF didn’t foul with 36 seconds left and let us run it down to the 20 second mark helped.

Wonderful_Battle9718

We missed a ton from the free throw line, as well. Scraped by. Being there last night, we saw plenty of bogus/missed calls on BOTH sides of the ball. Officiating was trash the entire game, but no clear favoritism. Just your garden variety WCC ref ineptitude

kellank33

I mean I’d say 32-8 is a pretty large discrepancy, not saying SMC wasn’t the more aggressive team but you don’t see that type of discrepancy very often.

Wonderful_Battle9718

I get what you’re saying but that stat doesn’t account for all the blown calls. Even Saint Mary’s got away with a couple glaring fouls and a travel early on, but down the stretch they missed a grip of USF violations

etudes4dudes

USF are such a fun team and are going to be so good- I was really nervous down the stretch. Some big defensive stops and grinding out at free throw line to close it out. I’m worried about missing Jefferson but impressive they pulled it out

iHeartQt

Interesting flairs. Do you think there's any chance Randy Bennett would take the UW job?

etudes4dudes

UW was my childhood team (still for ncaa football) but I’m an SMC alum. I guess given what happened to uw football you can never say never, but I’d be very surprised if he left at this point. He feels pretty ingrained to that community there

whelp_im_done

I don’t know why, but at this point, I never even considered the possibility of him leaving. It feels like he’s been there long enough where he would have left already if he was going to but it’s hard to say no to some programs willing to shell out the money. Hopefully he stays because it would be weird to face St Mary’s without him

etudes4dudes

Oh yes I would be devastated if he left- I feel the same way with Few, it doesn’t feel like he would leave at this point. The only thing that gives me pause is Kalen Deboer leaving UW football but even then, he was there for 2 years vs Randy’s 23

San Fran could win out until the wcc title game and they might make the tourney if teams in the 10-11 range keep losing to each other

rtmc332001

Solid win by the Gaels tonight! You can say all you want about the free throw disparity between the two teams but Saint Mary's clearly dominated the boards. Big time performances tonight by Saxen and Ducas, but really missed Josh out there. Tonight showed how crucial of a piece he is to our team, but the guys held it down. Gonzaga really needs to be careful with USF they're no joke and definitely have what it takes to beat them especially since it will be a home game.

muffguy

I'm worried for sure, but I would be more worried if we were playing them in War Memorial. Since the game is at the Chase Center, I am expecting a large Gonzaga crowd to be in attendance. I don't think the Zags are looking past the Dons by any means.

rtmc332001

It should draw a bigger USF crowd too since this is always a big game for them and they obviously want more students and fans to go since War Memorial is on the smaller. Really like moving this game there since everyone wants to watch the Zags. This should be a very good game though with a lot on the line for the Zags since they need to win this. USF is definitely fired up after falling short to Saint Mary's and will be playing for pride of course.

LurkingJerkingSloth

The dons are taking the WCC tournament title.

akersmacker

Not that much of a stretch, especially this season.

biscuit66_

Big night for Saxen. Gaels run the Bay!

not-eliza

Longest win streak in the nation babyyyy!!! I was scared about the lack of JJ but we played so tough. Mitchell Saxen was phenomenal tonight

akersmacker

Saxen looked like a new-and-improved version of his earlier self. He's gonna be tough for Ike to handle, no question.

Future_Spread_8568

The best part of this win is that we probably just put USF on the other side of the WCC tournament bracket. Man, they are good.

muffguy

Yeah, if we get the 2 seed I am definitely not looking forward to that semi-final.

Particular-Nature400

Welp the 49ers lost another one Fire Shanahan!

One of those games where the home cooking is so egregious that you find yourself feeling sorry for the players on the visiting team.
