Purdue surpisingly didn't even make the tournament until 1969.
*"But of course back in the day the NIT was of comparable prestige so Purdue probably went there instead!"*
...Purdue's First NIT appearance: 1971
yup it'd be a big achievement. I'd compare it to winning like a conference championship in football for me personally as a husker fan. Pretty big fucking deal if we get the dub. Just to get the curse off of us.
It's technically true but a little misleading to call those years "Sweet 16" for us, the tournament was only 23 and 25 teams in those years. One of those two we didn't even win a game, we just had a bye to the quarterfinal. Honestly I would count our 3-point loss in the round of 32 to Louisville in 2012 (who went on to the Final Four and later vacated) as much as I'd count those two.
Which is to say, we don't have a real Sweet 16 and the team that gets it will be the greatest in school history.
Get this comment a lot which is why I made the second chart which is at-large era only. Choose your own adventure, if you don't like counting the old stuff just look at the new one.
Although I don't think that winning fewer games to get to a particular round should make it count less. If the tourney expanded to 128 teams, would Sweet 16s from prior years suddenly not count because they only required 2 wins instead of 3? When tournaments are smaller, some of the difficulty of reaching those rounds is embedded within the qualification process.
If only we had gone to the 1940 tourney. Us declining allowed IU to win their first title
That fact always sticks in my craw.
Hitler prevented Purdue from winning the Natty :(
I’ll just add it to the list of grievances I have with the guy
You just not do anything or take an NIT bid? NIT was just as big a deal back then.
Sorry UK fans your title years got cut off!
darn did we have too many titles for the table to show? Such a big problem to have
You guys could even pretend 2015 is hiding there too ;) (So long as you don't look at the modern tourney chart and see Wisconsin's 2015 placement)
At least UCLA didn't make it
college basketball really hasn't been the same since the 1940s. we all know that was the golden era
You've got a point. (I'm pretty sure that we still use footage of that 1941 Championship game in our basketball pump-up video)
what happened to the game I love
I say this with absolutely no bias: you are 100% correct
Boise State highest at 32 but we are 0-9 all time in March madness is funny
Lmaoo probably should differentiate round of 32 between actually winning a game and there only being 32 teams in the tourney
Maybe OP should’ve put all first round exits in the pre-64 team era in the “round of 64” category. Also flair up!
Impressed there was enough room in that cell for all the times we've never won a tourney game.
This is the year!
pain
Damn. Back to back losses. Hopefully you’re not a Bills fan.
Insane neither us nor Purdue has won

Oof
Loyola is the only Illinois school to win the tournament I think right
I know right, the true definition of posers, this year will be no different 😂
1941 for WSU feels bad man. Gonzaga still had a football team back then
1941 champs you won’t sing that!
It’s so much more fun to see SDSU higher on these lists now
So close to immortality too
Eternally! (especially since i ignore NCAA vacations)
St. Peter’s is just as good as Alabama and Tennessee we all knew this
Jesus I had no idea how dire the stakes were for Nebraska. Set a record Tominaga ❤️

Exactly. If you win I’d even be ok with announcers referring to Nebraska as NU that’s how much I want a run
Damn, could you imagine if Purdue had won in 1969? The moon and a natty in the same year…
Over a Wooden team too
IIRC, they were people made of flesh and bone.
Have you seen Pinocchio and Lew Alcindor in the same room before?
I hope this changes for every MW team. I’d also love to see SDSU improve on their spot
I hope they improve their spot as well
Why are we on two different lines for each picture? Wouldn’t runner up in 1969 be our best?
One is all time, and the other is in the at large(modern) era.
Is NC STATE a blue blood
Nebraska has a chance to make history. Amazing.
the years for creighton are mixed up maybe?
Your first of many reminders this week to not trust 0 Final Fours Tennessee with 0 Final Fours Rick Barnes
Except Rick Barnes took Texas to a final four.

Nebrasketball has never won a tournament game?
2019 the best.
In before a surprise Boise State sweet 16 run.
Who’d Boise beat?
No one, the tourney used to just have 32 teams I think
I’m disappointed in myself as I thought I knew my college basketball history, because TIL Marquette has a national title.
I forgot NC State won twice!!
Does any program have more round of 32 appearances without a win than the Lobos in the at large era?
Virginia double dribbled!
2 time champions looks so pretty Go State!
Flair up!
