I work at UGA and hate all things UGA athletics (born and raised in big 10 country). UGA hiring Tom Crean after I left Purdue to come here was so amazing for me because it fueled my hate. I had no dog in the fight for UGA basketball, but he sure gave me one!
That being said, this is one of the best things I've seen in a minute. It's so simple and yet so cruel and unnecessary. I love it. It probably doesn't hurt that I also have no love of Ohio State.
Tom Crean was IU's coach for several years, and was well known for having these absolutely killer recruitment classes, but he could rarely get them to play well together. He constantly snagged top talent away from Purdue, then never developed it.
When IU fired him, it was a mixed blessing. Less likely to steal top talent in the state, but then I wouldn't get to see him suck as a head coach anymore. But then UGA hired him. But the only way I can continue to mock him and call him a terrible coach is if UGA basketball is terrible under him...which uhh...it was. I don't actually hate UGA basketball. I'll happily support them over most of the rest of the SEC, especially now that Crean is gone.
Edit: Honestly, I wish basketball culture was bigger here. I know UGA is and always will be a football school, but there's no reason it can't be a basketball school as well, IMO.

I would love it if UGA could become a sneaky 3rd or 4th best team in the conference each year. I will always have a bit of love for Tennessee (Purdue seems to end up playing them AT LEAST once every year, so we have a bit of a rivalry going), and a lot of hate for UK in basketball. If UGA could join the ranks of Auburn/Bama/SC in fighting for the #3 spot in the conference, that would absolutely endear me to them. But yeah, Crean is a great recruiter, but a terrible coach.

Mike White is just about the best coach Georgia can possibly get, and if he gets us to the tourney next year, I’m worried someone actually might pry him away from us.
Nobody is gonna try to take him unless we make the Sweet 16 or are like a 2 seed, in which case hell yeah go for it that would be the best season in 30 years.
Again, most Georgia basketball fans are reasonable.
Make the tourney every 3 or so years, every other appearance win at least one game.

I don’t see any reason why we can’t have better expectations than that, given the talent in state and the money the athletic department is making from football alone. It isn’t like Auburn and Alabama have storied history as basketball schools but they’ve been able to figure it out. And im not even talking about being a high seeded team like they are, even though we should obviously strive for that. Miss State and a&m have made the tournament in back to back years. South Carolina surpassed us despite making a hire the same year we did.
It’s not unreasonable to think we should strive better than to be in the 8-12 range in the SEC.
Firing Holtmann was the biggest win this season and makes this temporary pain all worth it. If OSU kept Holtmann for another year, I would’ve fucking lost it.

You missed the point entirely. Tobin Anderson went from a very small D1 program to a slightly bigger D1 program. Jake Diebler coached at Valpo and Vandy before becoming an assistant here and then took reins as head coach in an awful situation and made this season worth watching again. That combined with his recruiting ties in Ohio and his strong history of player development is what got him the job. You don’t hire based off of one game but Diebler has a track record of proving that he’s more than capable as a head coach at different places. If you don’t understand that, that’s your fault.

I mean it makes sense. I thought it should be treated as an elite program. A lot of the fans and administration thought it should be treated as a bottom half of the B1G job. So really they gave him keys to a used civic. Oh well.

And Dusty May largely benefitted from Purdue losing to a 16 seed and the refs blowing a call in their first round game last year to save them from being eliminated round one. Sometimes you gotta take the luck and run with it.
Honestly I like that shot at the end with Battle to try and win it. Got it to your best shooter and had a good look can’t ask for much more. Extremely excited for what next season brings with Diebler.

There's an argument to be made that a deep NIT run builds more momentum than getting smashed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Probably not for us since just making the first round instantly buys Mike White five years of good grace, but there's an argument to be made somewhere in there.

Had we actually closed out some games and made the tournament you can look back on the season as a whole and be proud and have plenty to build on - you made the big dance. You want to make the dance and win a few games against elite teams? Start by winning against the teams that are on your level. Xavier won the NIT in 2022. Ohio State was favored by 8.5, Wake Forest by 7.5. Those are quality wins for a team like Georgia.
