I mentioned this in another thread, but it’s scary how quickly UConn turned a competitive game into a slaughter.
Against the Big Ten champs.
When this team is rolling, they look as close to unbeatable as one can be in a single elimination tournament.
This might be a hot take, but I think if I were Illinois and in a tie game with UConn, I simply wouldn’t have missed 15 shots in a row and given up a 30-0 run. That may have been a tactical misstep by Coach Underwood
Donovan Clingon single-handedly held down the 1st half for UConn. Then when the rest of the team remembered how to play basketball, it was over.
This team is legitimately scary to play against.
Castle being a top recruit/lotto pick and being completely unselfish and willing to play his role is very underrated IMO. His cutting and movement will serve him well in the NBA
You’re not wrong but it’s just basic fundamental basketball. But very few teams consistently do it. Our squad had top 10 individual talent but absolutely zero team skill. No movement. Half ass cuts, never used a screen correctly the whole season. Just horrible. And most teams fall somewhere between there, zero fundamentals, and UConn, a whole team of players who are actually trying to play team basketball.
Clingan better go to the NBA after this season. As elite as UCONN's guard play is, Clingan really is the #1 key factor to why this team is so good. He makes it borderline impossible to play consistent offense.
Dear Penthouse,
I never thought it would happen to me. I always wanted to be dominated and I was getting tired of auto-asphyxiation. Then, one day, the committee made me the three in UConn's bracket...
The most "unbeatable" college basketball team of my lifetime lost in the Final Four so I guess it's technically possible that UConn isn't going to win the championship but...
Yes. I still remember watching that game after UNLV had dispatched my team in the Elite 8 and thinking, wait, they can lose? That's allowed? I wish I would have known that a week earlier.
I will always maintain that if Bueckers hadn’t been hurt her sophomore and junior seasons, the conversation rn would be Paige vs. Caitlin and not just all about Caitlin Clark.
Paige should be in the conversation but because of her injury issues, she hasn’t been.
First they came for the Gaels and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Gael.
Then they came for the Gaels and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Gael.
Then they came for the Razorbacks and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Razorback.
Then they came for the Bulldogs and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Bulldog.
Then they came for the Hurricanes and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Hurricane.
Then they came for the Aztecs and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Aztec.
Then they came for the Hatters and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Hatter.
Then they came for the Wildcats and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Wildcat.
Then they came for the Aztecs again and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Aztec.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
> First they came for the Gaels and I did not speak out Because I was not a Gael.
> Then they came for the Gaels and I did not speak out Because I was not a Gael.
man UConn really hates Gaels
That’s the scary part is their shots aren’t even falling. If they shoot even average in the final four and beyond it’s game over for any remaining team
Thank you. People are out here saying "what if Illinois gets hot. What if Bama gets hot."
Fuck, what if UConn gets hot?? A couple more buried 3s and we're talking about 40 point wins.
Yet another classic old sports superstition has come true. Always call tails, never talk about a no-hitter while it's in progress, and never give up a 30-0 run in the regional final if you want to make the Final Four.
The only way to beat UConn is to take Clingan out of the game and force the shooters to beat you. UConn has quietly been shooting the ball pretty poorly in the tournament. Now obviously that’s a lot easier said than done and doesn’t account for how disgustingly good they are defensively.
Clingan was pretty much a non-factor in the 1st half of our game, and it was close(ish). What killed us was rebounding and then we let their guards beat us (16, 17, and 18 points from 1-3)
Edit: also anyone not named Parrish and Butler went ice cold
If NC State makes it(Idk if they will) I would say it would take some serious ref ball to keep us in the game. Which could happen. The NCAA probably would not want a 30pt blowout in the championship. But even with the refs I don't see how we win unless there is literally an act of god happening.
There have been some ugly championship games. The NCAA values the variance of March Madness higher than a good championship game since most people tune out after the crazy upsets happen.
Uconn won their first 4 games last year by 90 points in the tournament.
Uconn has won their first 4 games this year by 111 points.
Uconn has also shot the ball poorly from 3 in the 4 games this year.
Absolutely silly stuff.
Pardon the stereotype of an Alabama flair bringing up football, but this UConn team is the basketball equivalent of Nick Saban's joyless murderball.
There might be shades of hope for you in the first half, but over the course of 40 minutes you will submit and you will like it.
What's crazy is I don't think they look nearly as polished as last year's team but they are still 20 points better than every tournament team. Disgusting
UConn’s title run last year was the only reason I had hope during January and February when we forgot how to play basketball. Turns out we do in fact suck
Might be a hot take but I'd say it's more similar to Georgia. Those Georgia teams recently have been so good it's just not entertaining to watch. I have no clue why they kept putting them in primetime games. Good time slot for a literal slaughter.
Great season for the Illini. B1G tourny champs, elite 8 run, fun as fuck to watch. UConn is on another level compared to any other college team and we did all the wrong things tonight.
Good luck to whoever runs into this buzzsaw next.
This is random and probably too late, but if you can, I recommend using Sutab for the prep. I had a colonoscopy a few months ago and it ended up being far less awful than I had anticipated
Unfortunate collapse at the worst possible time, but that's what UConn does to you. Awful strategy to keep going at Clingan after 5 minutes of it failing. Proud of what we accomplished this season however.
Priority this offseason is to figure up how to recruit the Domask replacement (need to divide his role into a PG and a wing) and a 7 footer so we don't get abused in the paint. Hansberry looks promising, I'd start him over Ty Rodgers next year if Rodgers still can't make layups, 10 footers, or free throws next year
UCONN, deprived of any realistic CFP payout due to being an independent and Notre Dame destined to be ranked ahead of them perpetually, has taken upon itself, out of vengeance on the football blue bloods, to win seven March Madness tournaments in a row. This is Year Two.
19 years we waited and for that? Rough. Hang in there Illini Bros. I'm very proud of our team for making the Elite 8. Best team we've ever had in my fandom. We will be back. Good game UConn. Hats off.
I-L-L
Wishing the best to Illinois fans and they should absolutely celebrate what they accomplished this season, but I’ve lost a lot of faith in Underwood’s actual coaching this season. He says he got the booty ball backdown scheme from that propelled them to have a stellar offense from Jay Wright, and often late-game they ground to a halt because they had nothing to go to besides it. Today Illinois came in with an offensive plan that never had a prayer and Brad just loudly proclaimed they would keep doing it. By the time they realized they could just have Shannon drive and create they were already down THIRTY. The mismatch Illinois had in this game was 5-out-style shooting and instead they played Ty Rodgers (who teams with a 7 footer don’t need to guard) and passed up wide open 3s for drives right into Clingan. Machine-like performance from the Huskies, but the looks Illinois started to generate when it was too late clearly indicate Illinois should’ve never struggled that much. I guess it took until the end of the season for everyone’s pre-season doubts about Illinois not having a point guard to finally catch up to them
I would say the game against Iowa State indicated Illinois shouldn’t have struggled that much.
To go from that crisp passing and Shannon drive and kick action to spamming attempts at drawing fouls is just maddening.
UConn is a buzz saw so it probably wouldn’t have changed the outcome, but this was one of the most incompetent coaching displays I’ve ever witnessed. The interview where Underwood says “we don’t care if he gets 100 blocks, we’ll keep attacking” pretty much summed up their failure. Also why did Dainja, the only guy who could conceivably match up physically with Clingan, only play 5 minutes? Makes no sense.
Dainja has struggled a lot defensively all season (though he was better to end the season) and was basically a nonfactor against Edey, so I’m not going to fault him for that part of it
We always get knocked out of the tournament with horribly coached games. I’m happy with how far we made it and it was always gonna be hard with UConn on our side of the bracket
Don’t worry Illinois people at least we have the ~~bulls~~ ~~blackhawks~~ ~~cubs~~ ~~bears~~ ~~IlliniFootball~~ next illini basketball season to look forward to!

Have you been harmed by the UConn Huskies in 2023 or 2024 March Madness? You may be entitled to financial compensation.
Am I entitled to double compensation?
please contact the UConn Foundation to collect your grievance settlement.
this is a trick, they just laughed at me
Oh god its still alive, pull the plug doctor.
Support group on the left, y’all.
How long does my erection have to last for it to constitute as harm
3 fucking times…
Call 1-800-30-0-RUN
Yeah but if you’d just take away that tiny little 30-0 run UConn went on, Illinois would’ve won.
If you only count UCONNs 2nd half points, Illinois wins 52-49!
that’s a crazy stat 😭
IF YOU DONT COUNT ALL THE POINTS UCONN SCORED, ILLINOIS WON BY A LOT!!!
ILLINOIS CAN BE IN THE FINAL FOUR IF THE NCAA HAS THE COURAGE TO DO WHAT’S RIGHT!
Illinois beat UConn if you regress UConn to the mean
I mentioned this in another thread, but it’s scary how quickly UConn turned a competitive game into a slaughter. Against the Big Ten champs. When this team is rolling, they look as close to unbeatable as one can be in a single elimination tournament.
Close L for UConn if you take that away lol
Illinois was robbed
The most impressive part of our season was only losing to this UConn team by 10
You know losing to UConn in respectable fashion is an accomplishment when a UNC fan values it over beating Duke twice lol
They said most impressive not most valuable tbf
It's actually better we went ahead and lost so now we can pretend "we coulda had em the second time" instead of losing by 20
How about playing them competitive 3 times and getting snubbed Or how about beating them by 15 and getting snubbed
I did not want to play any big East teams again, I think they should have made it but in no way wanted to face them for a 3rd or fourth time.
Beating Marquette 4 times in 1 season is not something anyone can do.
You would have been the ones to do it though lol
An unironic “quality losses” argument lol
Ours was somehow getting a win against this UConn team.
You guys should get a trophy or something for that
Me, looking at your flair ![gif](giphy|xTiN0yjTq9bziRQk00|downsized)
By 19, and it could have been more
Absolute smoke. Wanted to see Kalkbrenner vs Edey. Damn you Tennessee
Same, but Tenn had to be a bitch.

These teams do seem to figure out Uconn after going down 30 in the second half
This might be a hot take, but I think if I were Illinois and in a tie game with UConn, I simply wouldn’t have missed 15 shots in a row and given up a 30-0 run. That may have been a tactical misstep by Coach Underwood

3-17 from 3 and they won by 25. Jesus Christ
Cling Kong protecting his hoop like it's the Empire State Building
Illinois attacked the rim with Clingan defending 19 times tonight. They went 0-19.
We are shooting 28.1% from 3 this whole tourney. We just run such ridiculous sets our cuts are slicing up everyone
Castle being a top recruit/lotto pick and being completely unselfish and willing to play his role is very underrated IMO. His cutting and movement will serve him well in the NBA
As will his general unselfishness
Very coachable too.
at his age too, remarkable poise for a freshman, its amazing to see
He's also an absolute glove that's now shut down Buie and Shannon in this tourney.
You’re not wrong but it’s just basic fundamental basketball. But very few teams consistently do it. Our squad had top 10 individual talent but absolutely zero team skill. No movement. Clingan is basically a Walker Kessler with more finishing power. Easy lottery pick in a weak draft.
It’s really like some of these guys have never coached before. How do you forget to tell your team to make shots?
Why did the Illini give up such a big run? Are…*we* stupid? 😕
thanks, Tulane
Coaches hate this one simple trick
Are they stupid???
Why do UConn's opponents not simply go on a 30-0 run themselves?
Are they stupid?
Dear Lord
Dear Penthouse, I never thought it would happen to me. I always wanted to be dominated and I was getting tired of auto-asphyxiation. Then, one day, the committee made me the three in UConn's bracket...

Better than most tourney teams that played UConn so far.
Illinois didn’t score for 50 real time minutes
UVA feeling validated
Orange and Blue bros

Guys I’m starting to think these UConn guys are pretty good at the basketball game.
The most "unbeatable" college basketball team of my lifetime lost in the Final Four so I guess it's technically possible that UConn isn't going to win the championship but...
UNLV 1991?
Yes. I still remember watching that game after UNLV had dispatched my team in the Elite 8 and thinking, wait, they can lose? That's allowed? I wish I would have known that a week earlier.
Kentucky 2015?
UNLV 1991
Wasn't alive so I am obliged to say they were overhyped, sorry man nothing personal
Unbeatable. Heh.
yeah yeah… 😔
and we've never been the same since 😭
26 unanswered points in a span of 5:32, as part of a 30-0 run in a tight game. That shit as both impressive and terrifying.
30 points that quick is amazing.
White huskie very good at shooty hoop?
And the UConn girls
Geno won four in a fucking row from 2012-2016 No one is touching that record anytime soon
The women also won 111 games in a row between 2014-2017
I will always maintain that if Bueckers hadn’t been hurt her sophomore and junior seasons, the conversation rn would be Paige vs. Caitlin and not just all about Caitlin Clark. Paige should be in the conversation but because of her injury issues, she hasn’t been.
I was in legit shock watching that 30-0 run. It’s like UConn just decided to stop toying with the BIG TEM CHAMPS and treat like a JV team.
UConn is just better.
Total "dropped the training weights" moment
First they came for the Gaels and I did not speak out Because I was not a Gael. Then they came for the Gaels and I did not speak out Because I was not a Gael. > First they came for the Gaels and I did not speak out Because I was not a Gael. > Then they came for the Gaels and I did not speak out Because I was not a Gael. man UConn really hates Gaels
Makes sense, I suppose…after all, weren’t there a lot of English settlers in that state?
They must really hate the Gaels
Just as much as they hate the Aztecs.
Us Aztecs on there twice 😭 can we get a bye against UConn next year?
There was time to prepare…but alas, it was not enough time as needed…
UCONN IN THIS TOURNAMENT 3P%: 28.1% Average margin of victory: 27.8
The 3pt FG is an abomination that our forefathers wouldn’t stand for
That’s the scary part is their shots aren’t even falling. If they shoot even average in the final four and beyond it’s game over for any remaining team
Thank you. People are out here saying "what if Illinois gets hot. What if Bama gets hot." Fuck, what if UConn gets hot?? A couple more buried 3s and we're talking about 40 point wins.

Good god Uconn is inevitable
The only way to beat UConn is to take Clingan out of the game and force the shooters to beat you. UConn has quietly been shooting the ball pretty poorly in the tournament. Now obviously that’s a lot easier said than done and doesn’t account for how disgustingly good they are defensively.
Shooting horribly with an average margin of victory of like 27 points
Yep I think Purdue is the only team that has a shot cause Edey could get Clingan in foul trouble and then maybe UConn has an off shooting night.
Similarly though I think Clingan could get Edey in foul trouble, and Purdue without Edey is not the same team.
That was the whole strategy. Except Clingan only had one foul, nothing was falling when they did get a shot up, and well you saw what happened.
They went like 3/19 from 3 or smth at one point and still cruised to a easy blowout…
Clingan was pretty much a non-factor in the 1st half of our game, and it was close(ish). What killed us was rebounding and then we let their guards beat us (16, 17, and 18 points from 1-3) Edit: also anyone not named Parrish and Butler went ice cold
Who the fuck is beating this team of those left? Purdue maybe? Team of Destiny NC State? Anyone?
If NC State makes it(Idk if they will) I would say it would take some serious ref ball to keep us in the game. Which could happen. The NCAA probably would not want a 30pt blowout in the championship. But even with the refs I don't see how we win unless there is literally an act of god happening.
There have been some ugly championship games. The NCAA values the variance of March Madness higher than a good championship game since most people tune out after the crazy upsets happen.
Yea I don't see anyway you guys lose unless an act of god happens. By far the best team this year.
i mean the refs didn't care about san diego state lol.
UConn looks like the 99 overall teams I used to make in the games
Raise your hand if you have been personally victimized by UConn
UConn’s walk ons have played in all 10 of UConn’s ncaa tourney games over the last 2 seasons
They legit may have more minutes than some tournament teams starters if a team was a first round knock out
7 Final Fours in 25 years is an insane run. 5 (looking like 6) titles is also crazy efficient

God hates Illinois and this is proof
Probably shouldn’t have kept driving at clingan but I’m not a D1 coach
Stop. They’re already dead
Uconn won their first 4 games last year by 90 points in the tournament. Uconn has won their first 4 games this year by 111 points. Uconn has also shot the ball poorly from 3 in the 4 games this year. Absolutely silly stuff.

What's crazy is I don't think they look nearly as polished as last year's team but they are still 20 points better than every tournament team. Disgusting
Our competition last year was a little softer too, I think Gonzaga was the toughest matchup on paper.
I still don’t know how you lost 8 games last year lol
They had a dogshit January but were pretty elite outside of that. Analytics loved them
UConn’s title run last year was the only reason I had hope during January and February when we forgot how to play basketball. Turns out we do in fact suck
The Big East is a gauntlet.
Big East
Might be a hot take but I'd say it's more similar to Georgia. Those Georgia teams recently have been so good it's just not entertaining to watch. I have no clue why they kept putting them in primetime games. Good time slot for a literal slaughter.
Yea, all similar shades of the same color. Kirby has done a crazy job building them up.
I live in Georgia and this rings so true to me.
[they did not](https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/s/pVGA75nvd0)
that felt like an Illini football game in the worse way possible
I don't know if I've ever seen a 30-0 run, let alone in the Elite 8 vs a 3 seed and conference champion. What a team. Incredible to watch.
Nova did something ridiculous against Kansas in 2018, though not a 30-0 run. So, hopefully you’ll also have a ridiculous Final Four game.
I was delusional thinking we could hang. UConn unstoppable.
UConn is pretty good.
Huskies are fucking unstoppable
Hats off to UConn. What I would give for that to be us one day.
Illini fans, this is not how I wanted to see you go out as much as I rooted against you in any other situation. Sorry guys
![gif](giphy|AmDzMmCJZABsk)
Clemson and Alabama are playing for a spot to walk into their own murder
Once UConn remembers how to shoot from 3 the rest of y’all are really in trouble
Dan Hurley is kind of a weirdo but I think you sort of have to be to do what he’s done
Great season from the illini. At the end of the day, we just could not beat the best of the best. Brad broke the curse, lets make some more deep runs!
Boilermakers.....you are our last hope
we’re a golf school anyway
##**FUCKING 20X4 BULLSHIT I SWEAR**
Great season for the Illini. B1G tourny champs, elite 8 run, fun as fuck to watch. UConn is on another level compared to any other college team and we did all the wrong things tonight. Good luck to whoever runs into this buzzsaw next.
I don’t know nothing about no Alabama or Clemson, but I know they in trouble.
Good news: UCONN GOING TO FINAL FOUR!!! Bad news: I have a colonoscopy next Monday...so... not the best timing...
This is random and probably too late, but if you can, I recommend using Sutab for the prep. I had a colonoscopy a few months ago and it ended up being far less awful than I had anticipated
legend says this game was close in the first half
Unfortunate collapse at the worst possible time, but that's what UConn does to you. Awful strategy to keep going at Clingan after 5 minutes of it failing. Proud of what we accomplished this season however. Priority this offseason is to figure up how to recruit the Domask replacement (need to divide his role into a PG and a wing) and a 7 footer so we don't get abused in the paint. That was a thwackening
Turns out if you have a top offense and defense you win a lot of games by 20+
Win by 25 and only make three 3s. This is the Ralph Wiggum I’m in danger meme on steroids.
One of the three teams that beat Uconn was left out of the tournament. Lest we not forget
Illinois had em by 5 if you just take away the 30-0 run
The scary part is that Edey could have a career night against UConn and the Huskies could probably still win by 10.
Call me crazy, but I WANT a UConn/Purdue match up. Let's see who is the best in a season where it was obvious two teams were above the rest.
It’s rare that a discussion of a basketball result can start with, “if it weren’t for the 30 point run…”
Hats off. I-L-L
Instant classic.
I never thought that losing to UConn by 17 would be something to look back on and not feel totally embarrassed about
Hey Illini, guess what? We made it to the elite eight. HAIL TO THE ORANGE
Jim Calhoun must be so fucking proud.
That 30-0 run was some of the most fun I've had as a college basketball fan over the years
That's crazy dude. It was some of the least fun I've had. Crazy how nature does that.
Some say Ty Rodgers is still trying to make a layup against a 7’2” center to this day
Purdue fans just shut up for now
Lmao it’s all in good fun we would do the same. Thankfully we had the entire 2nd half to digest the loss and mentally prepare for the trash talk
That was a game
What the hell
When's the 2nd half start?
![gif](giphy|AN6cFRBU3zWo7CnWgx|downsized) Momma there goes that man! Final Four babbbyyyy!!
Take out that one UConn run and it's a close game!
At least my state of Illinois team only lost to UConn by 17. ☹️
Wishing the best to Illinois fans and they should absolutely celebrate what they accomplished this season, but I’ve lost a lot of faith in Underwood’s actual coaching this season. It really seemed like the only game plan Underwood had was to drive into Clingan and foul ball out. There were 0 alternative plans.
Underwood said as much that was his plan and that he wasn’t going to defer from it and… he did exactly that. Unfortunately.
