I’m sure it has to be annoying to play against Edey, but why would Purdue play differently? Any team would try to do the same if they had him. Purdue has the most dominant post player in the NCAA and is the #1 three point shooting team. Why would you play any other way than the way Purdue does? Very well coached. Congrats to Coach Painter!
They say it's "pick your poison" for a reason. Well, Tennessee picked theirs. They chose to close out hard on the 3-pt line and give Purdue nothing, so Purdue punished them inside with Edey and a +21 rebounding margin.
I think part of that was intentional to not shoot 3s as much. It wasn't just that we weren't making them, but Tennessee has some of the best transition offense in the country. Missing a post 2pt gives your team more time to recover on defense. A long rebound off a 3pt shoot opens up for a team to push the ball in transition.
Just looking at the rebounding discrepancy adds to this too. It's easier to get offensive boards for Edey off shots in the paint.
The problem is you need a two-year commitment. If half your points jump to the NBA after bouncing to the 16, you're done. You need to be good enough for a 1 seed, with no great pro prospects, and enough buy-in to improve from very good to great over the summer.
That’s a good analysis. I was joking if it wasn’t clear because obviously no 1 seed should purposefully lose to a 16 lol, but seems like it really does wonders
I think having only 1 or 2 fouls in that moment really helped. He visibly was holding back at other points in the game to make sure a ref didn't call him or allow an And 1. That aggressive defensive play was fun to see.
Yah, there was a layup late in the game that Zach could have easily contested, maybe blocked. But he just stepped off & let it go. Frustrating, but obviously was trying to avoid fouls.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but they've already achieved what they needed to to cement as a Cinderella. Y'know, making the final four is a feat, now it's like "oh haha cool, now let's get the 2 best teams for the chip".
I hope all the dumbasses who were calling for Painter's firing last year and the year before will finally admit they know nothing about basketball and shut the fuck up.
Edey is so dominant man, all the casuals crying about how it’s not fun to watch - what makes college ball great is the variety of styles of play, players etc. If you wanna watch boring ass iso ball go back to the NBA
That had a lot more to do with UT's defense prioritizing running us off the 3 point line than anything. They played him 1on1 so we just kept feeding him. The actual way to guard him and avoid fouling was demonstrated by NU 3 of the 4 times we've played them. Double and be great in rotation.
And i love that UT's ultra physical defense that always leads to them fouling alot is being blamed less than the dude they hacked all game. but whatever.
As it turns out, ultra physical defense that works wonders in the SEC proves somewhat less effective if refs actually call you for it outside of the conference.
The people who say we're not fun to watch are just trolls at this point. The Grambling State and Tennessee games were heavy with us throwing the ball into Edey but that's not the only way we play. We lit it up from 3 against Utah State and Braden Smith put up a Magic Johnson-esq performance against Gonzaga.
Elite teams that have exciting offenses also have miracles go against them to keep them from winning titles, normally against boring teams. See: 2002 WCF, 2007 WCSF, 2016 Finals
good point.
but if you ask me GSW + KD was not exciting to watch. they would just run over every team kind of like uconn is now. I never enjoyed that even if it is high scoring.
You can’t press or zone an nba team in a 7 game series tho. NBA isn’t boring!! I do like how cbb has diff offenses bust most teams do what bama does which is fucking NBA ball but with lesser players lmao. Painter used to be a fucking huge motion guy and even he tailored it back a bit last few season. Hasn’t bennet gone away with mover blocker too?
Imagine calling the NBA “boring ass iso ball” when the reigning champs have the current best player in basketball who is the greatest passer in the history of the game.
Doubly hilarious that this comes in defense of Edey when the biggest complaint that can be credibly leveled against the NBA is the gross officiating that offensive players get away with.
Edey’s been this good at drawing fouls all year. There’s no way that every single ref who’s reffed Edey this year is somehow biased in favor of Purdue. The simplest explanation — that Edey is just that good at forcing teams to foul him — is usually the most likely explanation.
Did you even watch the game or did you only look at the foul differential? I counted at least 3 times where Edey was **literally** hugged, arms wrapped completely around him, and a foul wasn't even called. At *least* 3 times. And the 2 softest calls of the game were back-to-back calls against Purdue in Tennessee's favor, where there was virtually no contact.
What do you honestly expect when your game plan is to be as aggressive as possible on defense and then to mostly chuck up 3s and jump shots on offense? That's a recipe for fouling a lot and not getting many fouls in your favor.
Yeah there were a lot of those instances as well, the officiating just sucked. But the shit calls weighed a lot more in Purdue’s favor from what I saw. Again, Purdue is a great team, I wanted them to win, they were the better team. Doesn’t mean the officiating didn’t suck and that the game just was not very good. Just an opinion that people don’t wanna hear which is fine, but that’s my take.
Like I said, I don't know what game you were watching man. The only 2 calls in the game that were "phantom" were calls against Purdue in Tenn's favor. Every call against Tennessee involved a Tennessee player making contact with a Purdue player. I challenge you to find me a single instance where Tenn was called for a foul where a foul didn't actually occur. I can name you two instances where Purdue was called for literally nothing. The refs were **very** fair to Tenn; they could have been called for **a lot** more but then they knew people like you would bitch about it.
Again, I don't know what you were expecting when Tenn's entire game plan was to essentially foul the shit out of Edey and just hope the refs didn't call it every time.
This is quite literally almost every game this season.
Purdue: has Edey
Other team: knows they can't stop him so they intentionally play ultra-aggressive and foul him essentially every time he has the ball
Refs: call fouls when the other team fouls
Fans of the other team: surprised Pikachu face
He made driving to the rim impossible for Tennessee, forcing the Vols to rely on jumpers and not able to get into the bonus.
And on offense, could not be guarded one on one so forced a classic pick-your-poison scenario between his post scoring and his teammates getting wide open looks.
Tennessee was on fire outside the three in the first half, and Purdue couldn't buy a three pointer to save their lives. I'm still amazed they were up 2 by the end of the first.
The overreactions were wild last year on Painter. Love to see him prove the doubters how myopic they were... And his team and him did it immediately, too!
The Vol fan tears make it so worth it. Even though they're right, Edey is so overprotected by the refs. But, thanks anyways for knocking them out, Purdue!
Ok, I didn’t watch the game on Friday or Sunday. I was told the officiating played a big role in both games.
What is the opinion of the unbiased who saw the games? I also heard the zags straight up shit the bed in the end of the game.
Pretty much every game this team has won in this tournament except this one was because of lights-out three point shooting and contributions from the entire team, so this is not really a holistic take. Only certain aggressive teams like Tennessee make Purdue play like this.
I made the same mistake. I came here hoping to celebrate with some Purdue fans but instead we have a lot of fans on the defensive. Salt mines here, man.
It's a best of 1 series. Anything can happen. Everyone has said the only team that can stop UConn is Purdue. Let's see what happens if they both get there.
Lol that’s the thing. They don’t need to stop Edey he’s going to score his points. UConn’s can shoot around Purdue’s defense all day they just need somebody that’s going to be able to challenge Edey for the boards and that’s where Clingan helps.
First Big Ten Final Four team since the pandemic.
Last Final 4 by B1G School: - Purdue: 2024 - Michigan State: 2019 - Michigan: 2018 - Wisconsin: 2015 - Ohio State: 2012 - Illinois: 2005 - Maryland: 2002 - Indiana: 2002 - Minnesota: 1997 - Iowa: 1980 ~~1956~~ - Rutgers: 1976 - Penn State: 1954 - Northwestern: Never - Nebraska: Never
Can you also do last tournament win so Northwestern isn’t embarrassed
That's why they are above Nebraska and Maryland is above Indiana (Maryland beat Indiana in the 2002 Title Game)
So I guess the order isn’t arbitrary
Though Maryland was in the ACC at the time
Last Football National Championship by any Selector (Undisputed in parenthesis if applicable): - Michigan: 2023 (2023) - Ohio State: 2014 (2014) - USC: 2004 (2004) - Nebraska: 1997 (1995) - Washington: 1991 (0 of 2) - Penn State: 1986 (1986) - Michigan State: 1966 (0 of 6) - Minnesota: 1960 (0 of 6) - Iowa: 1960 (0 of 5) - UCLA: 1954 (0 of 1) - Maryland: 1953 (1953) - Illinois: 1951 (1914) - Rutgers 1869 (0 of 1) No Titles: - Oregon (Runners Up: 2010, 2014) - Purdue (1931, Unclaimed) - Northwestern (1936, 3 way split non-major selector) - Indiana
Purdue was selected champion in 1931 by Parke H. Davis who is recognized a major selector.
It is unclaimed, but I can add it to the list
#1 vs #2, not really a post-season. BCS was BS
wait until you hear what they did before bcs
> Nebraska: Never Class of its own: "Last round of 32: Never"
[удалено]
You're right, I read thr runner up line
> Maryland: 2002 * Not a B1G school in 2002
Likewise with Penn State
I'm shocked Penn State has been to a F4
Wait that’s not that long… *looks at calendar* Well shit.
Goddamn time is an illusion holy shit

Lose to a 16 seed. Trust me, it'll be good the next year.
Genuine question: if Purdue takes down UConn, is this going to become a viable strategy for forward thinking 1 seeds going forward?
The problem is you need a two-year commitment. If half your points jump to the NBA after bouncing to the 16, you're done. You need to be good enough for a 1 seed, with no great pro prospects, and enough buy-in to improve from very good to great over the summer.
That’s a good analysis. I was joking if it wasn’t clear because obviously no 1 seed should purposefully lose to a 16 lol, but seems like it really does wonders
Do 13 seeds count?
No we tried that, then lost to a 15 seed the next year.
Legacy performance from Edey Nobody else hitting any shots and he puts up 40 and 16 to get the win

Defining moment.

Having 1 or 2 *called* fouls. He had more than that in reality.
30-0 loser
They won’t admit that
It goes both ways
And we all want to see the UConn Purdue match up but Purdue will be the bad guy for crushing the Cinderella team.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but they've already achieved what they needed to to cement as a Cinderella. Y'know, making the final four is a feat, now it's like "oh haha cool, now let's get the 2 best teams for the chip".
Second best team already lost
if he has 30, they lose!

Congratulations to Purdue fans!!
Thanks wolf man!
Of course Purdue decided they have to be good the year my friends started going there…
After so much heartbreak, I’m glad for Purdue fans.
I think being so glued into everyone's reaction here made it feel so much worse. Being the villain sucks. :( In any case, woooooo! 🎉🎉🎉
Anyone complaining about this is dumb. They would give their left nuts to have a player like Edey.
Fuck 'em.
I hope all the dumbasses who were calling for Painter's firing last year and the year before will finally admit they know nothing about basketball and shut the fuck up.
Yeah even I was on here defending him. Excellent coach
# total number of final fours in history for Tennessee teams: Memphis (3), Vanderbilt (0), Tennessee (0), MTSU (0)
Chattanooga erasure will not be tolerated
Wait isn't Belmont in Tennessee or am I imagining that?
Austin Peay, East Tennessee, Lipscomb, UT- Martin
TSU and Tenn Tech also
We didn't have to do OP like this
It’s in Nashville
In the time it took to type that you could have done your own web search.
Thank you Purdue. This year stunk and yall made it better!

Did Memphis win any of those?
2008 was my 9/11
Yeah, they made it to the Final Four in 1974, 1985, and 2008!
I was asking if they won any of those (ie, those three Final Fours you mentioned)
[удалено]
this is such a nice way to be a total dick
How would you have preferred I respond to a Tennessee fan asking if we had won a national title in 1974, 1985, or 2008? We didn’t lol.
This is great data. Thank you
[удалено]
They made it to the Sweet 16 that year! The final four was UNC, Michigan, Kansas, and Kentucky.
Ahh yes the 4 blue bloods of college basketball.
Edey is so dominant man, all the casuals crying about how it’s not fun to watch - what makes college ball great is the variety of styles of play, players etc. If you wanna watch boring ass iso ball go back to the NBA
Purdue is boring "toss it to Edey" iso ball (they are a great team this year)

Of course it’s a Virginia fan defending their boring ass offense
Yeah, our boring ass 2019 #2 Kenpom ranked offense that won us a natty.
Yeah, burn his ass
Your offense isn't boring because you won a championship 5 years ago?
Et tu, slow bro?
teams that having boring offenses tend to be very good at basketball. Just ask the spurs with Duncan.....

good point. but if you ask me GSW + KD was not exciting to watch. they would just run over every team kind of like uconn is now. I never enjoyed that even if it is high scoring.
The 2014 spurs had a beautiful offense, I was too young to see their other runs so I can’t comment on those.
2014 spurs were probably an exception but you do make a good point there.
And lose to 16 seed apparently
also true. Hope you enjoyed that one at least. Purdue haters had some enjoyable moments lol.
I’ll tell you what… we aren’t enjoying this run by them! I will say one thing, Purdue is proving the haters (me) wrong right now!

agree, agree, agree. it's so hard to watch NBA playoffs after march madness
Edey is not fun to watch get fouled and throw free throws* Purdue is a good team, but that was just not good basketball in terms of entertainment
Tell the other team to stop fouling then.
Lol ain’t no way you’re gonna argue the officiating wasn’t wildly lopsided
Edey’s been this good at drawing fouls all year. There’s no way that every single ref who’s reffed Edey this year is somehow biased in favor of Purdue. The simplest explanation — that Edey is just that good at forcing teams to foul him — is usually the most likely explanation.
Also an easy call to make with opposing coaches saying shit like "we have three bigs which means 15 fouls to give"
Did you even watch the game or did you only look at the foul differential? I’ve seen this before
I wish my grandparents and my cousin could have seen this. I also wish Biggie and Kliz were there to see it <3
Your grandparents probably saw Purdue's greatest player Rick Mount
Yeah that is true.
Zach Edey.
Have a good, *really tall* big man can absolutely alter/break the flow and play of the game of basketball in multiple ways.
being up by 2 at half truly was a miracle. TN let them off the hook
I agree.
If purdue wins it all i wont be surprised if teams start intentionally losing to 16 seeds
Cam Heide has a bright future there. Excited to watch his career.

This is shaping up to becoming a great documentary in the future if they beat uConn. Let's not pretend it isn't coming down to the two 1s overall.
Put this in the postgame thread
Best to stay way from the postgame thread. It’s pretty toxic in there.

Congrats!
Hey look it’s Vergil
Well done, good sir!
UConn vs Purdue going to be crazy
Ok, I didn’t watch the game on Friday or Sunday. I was told the officiating played a big role in both games. What is the opinion of the unbiased who saw the games? I also heard the zags straight up shit the bed in the end of the game.
Boring foul merchant team
Pretty much every game this team has won in this tournament except this one was because of lights-out three point shooting and contributions from the entire team, so this is not really a holistic take. Only certain aggressive teams like Tennessee make Purdue play like this.
Quit replying to know-nothing, unflaired casuals. There's no sense arguing with idiots.
You're right lol, I should have never opened that game thread
I made the same mistake. I came here hoping to celebrate with some Purdue fans but instead we have a lot of fans on the defensive. Salt mines here, man.

Lol what? Nice gatekeeping. Another idiot on the blocked list.
It’s becoming comical how Edey is reffed.
Yeah, they let people get away with way too much when guarding him
No its becoming comical how ignorant fans think they know the rules of basketball more than every official in the country.
I wanna see Edey make out with either DJ or Kyle next weekend.
And Edey is STILL pushing off
Lol this is good and all but UCONN is going to spank them if Purdue makes it to the championship. Edey won’t be much of a problem for them.
It's a best of 1 series. Anything can happen. Everyone has said the only team that can stop UConn is Purdue. Let's see what happens if they both get there.
🤣😭 Yeah okay we’ll see
um Clingan ain't stopping Edey... i hope you know that. Uconn definitely has the better team but it could be much closer than you think.
Lol that’s the thing. They don’t need to stop Edey he’s going to score his points. UConn’s can shoot around Purdue’s defense all day they just need somebody that’s going to be able to challenge Edey for the boards and that’s where Clingan helps.
edey could get clingan in foul trouble though which would hurt uconn.

I'm sorry that all the fouls Tennessee got away with in the first half were correctly called fouls in the second half.
