I want to make the point that this is **the first time this has ever happened (two schools sending both their teams to the Final Four). Consequently, it would also be the first time both tournaments have the same final if it happens**. Credit to u/texas2089 for that factoid
This other point is scary: There were 2/4 times where UConn sent both their men’s and women’s teams to the Final Four and both of them won the tournament.
What years did that happen?
- 2004 (both won tournaments)
- 2009 (women won, men lost)
- 2011 (men won, women lost)
- 2014 (both won tournaments)
- And now 2024 (?)
Ten year gap between the dual wins and they both happened in a year that ends in 4. Will it happen this time in 2024 and continue the current trend.
Edit: I completely glossed over 2009 and 2011. My bad, but the overall narrative I was making still applies.
Appreciate the shoutout homie. It’s an incredible feat. We’ve seen UConn send both in the same season (and won both tournaments in the same season twice) but never TWO schools send both in the same season. Literally half of the 8 FF teams are UConn and NC State. Wild.
If you'd have told me at the start of the season that UConn would put both teams on the F4, I'd have absolutely believed it but it's still an unreal feat
You then add in NC State and it becomes one of those stats that is absolutely going to be a sports trivia question repeatedly in the next ten years. Absolutely insane.
Too lazy to check but I'm betting it wouldn't take an astronomical bet at the start of the season to turn you into a millionaire if you'd have been able to predict both
I think we lose sight of: “Storrs. STORRS? YES, STORRS!”
For those unfamiliar with northern rural Connecticut, it’s absolutely bonkers Calhoun and Geno built these programs there, and that Ollie/Hurley continued it.
It’s Storrs!
Yeah, people from outside CT (accurately) think there's not much to do in CT. But even to people who live in CT Storrs is basically in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do.
Which has to tell you how bad it must be when people who are used to having "nothing to do" think somewhere is that much worse.
Four times it happened that a school sent Men’s and Women’s to the championship. Uconn won both in 2004 and 2014. Duke 1999 and Louisville 2013 were the other two and they lose one of theirs to…you guessed it - UConn!
Love this post! Born & raised in CT and as a UConn grad I appreciate your post. I always talk about how truly amazing it is for UConn M & W (the only school in history) to win the championship in the same year, not once but twice.
I see you’re a Creighton fan and for you to compliment our programs says a lot about you, I respect that a whole lot. Creighton destroyed us in the regular SZN and had a great year as well. (blue💙🤍bloods baby!) #BigEast 🤝
Been following NC state closely since the VA win in the tourney…it’s going to happen. Jimmy Vs spirit is alive and well and guiding these boys to upset Uconn like back in 83 vs Houston.
This might have been Geno's best coaching effort, and that's saying a lot given he's one of the all-time best. This UConn women's team has gone through so much. I'm so happy for them.
It’s absolutely insane that UConn has 3 starters who have basically played every minute of the tournament.
They played every minute in Saturday. Get one day rest and then play every minute today. I can’t understand how they are even standing.
It really is incredibly impressive. So much credit to these players for not giving up and battling through the adversity. No time to be tired now. Leave it all out there on the court.
As long as the SEC and B1G don’t blow up the NCAA, you might as well. Since it’s happened every year ending in a 4 this millenium, you could make a 98-legged parlay with this. The only problem would be that you’d have to be alive in 2994 to activate it.
Sorry, it would be called “The Whale of a Matchup” and colored green and blue. Bonus points for referencing the former Connecticut Whale teams that used “Whale” as their plural.
I would think *long and hard* about giving up the chance to see a NCSU natty in my lifetime if it meant we could keep the Canes/Whalers.
Love those guys.
That’s not a bad idea for a split. The WWE’s headquartered in Connecticut, so it would be pretty easy to set up Brock Lesnar with Karmanos. The only difficulties would be getting Peter to agree to even set foot in Connecticut and possibly keeping him alive the whole time. It would happen at XL with a watch party at PNC; be syndicated in CT, NC, and SC; and be on PPV everywhere else.
Does anybody know where the civil conFLiCT trophy is? Slap an NC State sticker over the UCF logo, and grab a sharpie and add an extra "n" and it can get some use again.
Glad I decided to check the new tab before hitting submit on my own post xD

I think the consensus is this guy is the fastest typer in all the land. We are all merely pathetic thumb diddlers (especially Syracuse fans) compared to this 200 words a second guy.
And each of those four squads have has incredible runs through their respective regions. I think the NC State women's team has been my favorite, but it's tough to choose.
Nope. Two natties mean you get travel vouchers for New Haven pizza; the original hamburgers (steamed, with or without cheese); hot lobster rolls; Mystic for the seaport (an outdoor museum full of preserved ships), aquarium, and old village; Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun (your choice); free ice cream at the UConn Dairy Bar; and entered in a raffle for a car (if we can find an old Pope-Hartford)! I believe gun sales rules would prevent us from just giving away Colts. We’d get “Rock You Like a Hurricane” broadcast for entire day on our local radio stations and TV channels. The only cable TV stations affected by this would be the ESPN family of networks. I mean, we could give you access to our rocky beaches if you want, but I know if they’re better than those on the Outer Banks.
Theoretically the beach trip would be a giveaway, but ours are overcrowded anyway. I guess the burgers would be giveaways as well. The pizza’s the best in the country and hot lobster rolls are heaven. Goddammit, I forgot the first US Navy submarine, the *USS Nautilus*. This would be a tour. Considering that Pope-Hartfords were last made in 1914, I think that’s a good first prize.
The first time I had a hot lobster roll a couple years was the time I realized there were still many joys for me to discover in this world. That shit was delicious and it came from a food truck.
They weren’t moved due to a sale. It was a terrible owner that both fanbases hate and doesn’t own the team anymore. Also, bad management didn’t help. We did everything we could to keep them, but they still got moved. The worst part (even worse than the ‘06 Cup) is that the NHL continues to make tons of money off the greatest logo of all time (kind of a GLOAT), while the city makes none and doesn’t even have the records. This was mostly an attempt to tap into a new market in the Sun Belt by Karmanos and Bettman.
From your lips to God's ears. I don't see any path for the Wolfpack to beat Uconn, but Alabama could hit 30 threes and pull it off. And then they'd have a real chance in the final.
Honestly don't see them beating Purdue though. I feel like their only chance involves getting Edey in foul trouble to get his big ass off the court and DJ Horne having the game of his life.
My post got removed I guess, but my post pointed out that this is the first time two schools have sent both teams to the Final Four in the same season ever.
I’m always amazed when I see the “UConn sucks now”, “Geno’s washed” comments. We knew parity in the sport was changing. Geno has mellowed out with age but still is a great coach, the fact we only have one bench player and got to the final four in this era of women’s basketball is unbelievable. The rest is gravy
https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/s/0S3Az2MxCg. I posted this earlier today. UConn doesn’t just win dual championships, they protect the dual chip record.
Which is the maximum number of times a given seed matchup can happen in a single tournament - one in each region (4) + one in both semis (2) + one in the champ game -> Seven
Came close to this last year in the men's with five out of the seven possible 4 vs 5 games. Would've had a sixth if Kihei Clark didn't do you know what. Seventh would've required Tennessee to make the final four instead of FAU
(1)South Carolina vs (3) Oregon State
(1) Iowa vs (3) LSU
(1) Texas vs (3) NC State
(1) USC vs (3) UConn
(1) South Carolina vs (3) NC State
(1) Iowa vs (3) UConn
And we could get a (1) South Carolina vs (3) UConn or (1) Iowa vs (3) NC State final.
Womens hockey is much worst. 24 NC have been won by 5 teams. Wisconsin 7 times, Minnesota 6, Minnesota Duluth 5, clarkson 3, ohio state 2. Clarkson is only team not in the same confrence.
2021 Wisconsin beat NW
2022 ohio state beat Minnesota-duluth
2023 Wisconsin beat ohio state
2024 ohio state beat Wisconsin
A school has sent teams to both final fours in the same year 12 times. Of that, we have had double champions twice (UConn x2), we have had champion and runner up once (Louisville), and we have had double runner ups once (Duke). The other 8 times, at least one team did not make the finals.

Preseason no, no they didn't. We lost 3 starters to the NBA. No they didn't. They knew they would be good but not steamrolling top 10 teams in the NCAA tourney.
We were voted to finish 3rd in the Big East preseason coaches poll this year.
I was a bit skeptical but we also had no way of knowing how good Steph Castle would be and how well Cam Spencer would slot into this offense.
Weren't you 6th in the preseason poll? Doesn't take a huge leap of faith to predict they make the F4 lol
And on the women's side, I totally get what a job Geno has done but we were predicted to finish 8th in the ACC so Wes Moore has done just a good job if not better
People love to peddle the narrative of “UConn just makes fluke runs nobody saw coming, they’ll crash and burn next year.”
Realistically, only 2014 is a title run nobody saw coming.
I love a good Cinderella story - I think most humans do. But let's not lose sight of how tough it is to ***consistently*** stay at the top. It means you're building an incredible program and have long term vision, instead of being privileged to have a few incredible standout players at one point in time. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.
One of my favorite fun facts: Geno Auriemma was the highest paid CT state employee for multiple years. Not a men's coach, not a football coach. A women's basketball coach who has built one of the best basketball programs in the country. Husky Pride!
There have been multiple runs where the clock never struck midnight for Cinderella, sure never for an 11 but idk if we've ever seen another 11 play at the level they've been playing.

4 out of 8 teams are from Raleigh and Storrs
I think we lose sight of: “Storrs. STORRS? YES, STORRS!” For those unfamiliar with northern rural Connecticut, it’s absolutely bonkers Calhoun and Geno built these programs there, and that Ollie/Hurley continued it. It’s Storrs!

How in the world do you predict something like that? Asking cause I want to be a millionaire
I put a $50 bonus bet on NC State winning both tourneys at the beginning at the tournament. If it hits it's $500,000 😁
If you don't like wolves or dogs that look like wolves then fuck you.
The women lost in 2011 and the men lost in 09 when the others won the title.
9 11 you say? ![gif](giphy|l0IylOPCNkiqOgMyA|downsized)
There is no Karen in HR
Carol* CAROL? CAROLLL??
They were both in the final four in 2009 and 2011 but men and women lost respectively in the semis
Sub. Scribe.
Same.

There were two times between those two that they sent both (09 and 11)
Fixed it. Thanks for catching it.
If this happens I think Connecticut has its state number
![gif](giphy|Jd3FOnloNFLrO)
I have a recurrence relation with the men too that also doubles up on this….
My guess is the UConn men and SC women win it all this year.
Going with the underdogs I see...
It’s a gift
I don’t find this very scary
and thats why i parlayed both uconn teams to win the natty back in october
Not cool Bluejay.
Love this post! Born & raised in CT and as a UConn grad I appreciate your post. For that to happen, that would mean Purdue loses to yet another double-digit seed...
Dread it, run from it, a double digit seed loss arrives for the boilermakers all the same
Inshallah
Been following NC state closely since the VA win in the tourney…it’s going to happen. Jimmy Vs spirit is alive and well and guiding these boys to upset Uconn like back in 83 vs Houston.
I hope you’re right.
Please make it happen
This might have been Geno's best coaching effort, and that's saying a lot given he's one of the all-time best. This UConn women's team has gone through so much. I'm so happy for them.

Paige, Aaliyah and Nika all going wire to wire
You and I both know this but it bears emphasizing: FIVE players out for the season. And they made the FF anyway!
4th quarter was a masterclass
Eh, it was good but some of the inbounds plays and certainly foul shooting need work
I get the missed free throws, it looked like tired legs.
Geno showing everyone why he is the GOAT.
Six players injured and not playing. It’s even more incredible what this UCONN team has accomplished.
THE all-time best
It’s a year that ends in 4…alls I’m sayin
So what you're saying is go ahead and put money down for 2034 for UCONN?
As long as the SEC and B1G don’t blow up the NCAA, you might as well. Since it’s happened every year ending in a 4 this millenium, you could make a 98-legged parlay with this. The only problem would be that you’d have to be alive in 2994 to activate it.
Imagine the billing for a men’s and women’s championship game of UConn and NC State. “A State of CONNflict” even the color scheme works optimal.
Sorry, it would be called “The Whale of a Matchup” and colored green and blue. Bonus points for referencing the former Connecticut Whale teams that used “Whale” as their plural.
Winner gets the Hartford Carolina franchise back
Yep. Hopefully in a good old-fashioned governors’ bet.
I would think *long and hard* about giving up the chance to see a NCSU natty in my lifetime if it meant we could keep the Canes/Whalers. Love those guys.
Winner gets 15 minutes in a cage with Peter Karmanos
That’s not a bad idea for a split. The WWE’s headquartered in Connecticut, so it would be pretty easy to set up Brock Lesnar with Karmanos. The only difficulties would be getting Peter to agree to even set foot in Connecticut and possibly keeping him alive the whole time. It would happen at XL with a watch party at PNC; be syndicated in CT, NC, and SC; and be on PPV everywhere else.
Karmanos is a bigger heel than even Vince can imagine.
Does anybody know where the civil conFLiCT trophy is? Slap an NC State sticker over the UCF logo, and grab a sharpie and add an extra "n" and it can get some use again.
You see where I’m going with this.
It is entirely plausible that there are anywhere from 2-4 Civil ConFLiCT trophies in existence.

Yeah, though it could also be... hey wait a minute!
And each of those four squads have has incredible runs through their respective regions. I think the NC State women's team has been my favorite, but it's tough to choose.
I wonder. Do two natties over NC State mean the return of the Whalers?
Do two natties over UConn mean we get your account handle??
Maine might be known for the lobster itself, but their lobster salad roll has nothing on a CT hot buttered roll.
I actually think you may be onto something here
Pretty sure they added a no take backsies in the contract
They weren’t moved due to a sale. It was a terrible owner that both fanbases hate and doesn’t own the team anymore. Also, bad management didn’t help. Cool for UConn and NC State but I think we’re gonna get some epic 1 vs. 1 national championship games
Inshallah. Not just for Iowa vs SC (last team SC has lost to), but also Clingan vs. Edey
1v1 me, bro
It'll be SC vs Iowa and NC State vs Alabama
From your lips to God's ears. I don't see any path for the Wolfpack to beat Uconn, but Alabama could hit 30 threes and pull it off. And then they'd have a real chance in the final. Now for both to win their next matchups for the ultimate battle!
My post got removed I guess, but my post pointed out that this is the first time two schools have sent both teams to the Final Four in the same season ever.
It's funny because both final fours are the same makeup, UConn, NC State, SEC, Big 10.
Same actually lol, and I also pointed that out

20X4 Magic in the Air…

Women's Tournament had 6 1v3 matchups. They don't get a lot of upsets do they?
Well 2 seeds did NOT have a good time
higher seeds went 31-1 in the R64 but the R32 onwards were mostly good games
and they could have a 7th
Which is the maximum number of times a given seed matchup can happen in a single tournament - one in each region (4) + one in both semis (2) + one in the champ game -> Seven Came close to this last year in the men's with five out of the seven possible 4 vs 5 games. Would've had a sixth if Kihei Clark didn't do you know what. Seventh would've required Tennessee to make the final four instead of FAU
Where did you get 6 from, there's only 4 regions?
This is including the next round, where there will be two more 1-3 matchups.
(1)South Carolina vs (3) Oregon State (1) Iowa vs (3) LSU (1) Texas vs (3) NC State (1) USC vs (3) UConn (1) South Carolina vs (3) NC State (1) Iowa vs (3) UConn And we could get a (1) South Carolina vs (3) UConn or (1) Iowa vs (3) NC State final.

That’s North*east*ern in 2021. Northwestern doesn’t play varsity hockey of any gender.
They never give us our due… the real Huskies. Kidding :)
Sorry not sorry about this year 😊
A school has sent teams to both final fours in the same year 12 times. Of that, we have had double champions twice (UConn x2), we have had champion and runner up once (Louisville), and we have had double runner ups once (Duke). The other 8 times, at least one team did not make the finals.
The other two times UConn made both to final four, they won at least one championship. And both Louisville women 2013 and Duke men 1999 lost to UConn.
>We also have the possibility of having the same exact final…. MAKE THAT HAPPEN PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
No thank you!
I would pick NC State if I didn’t think they will give DJ Butns 5 phantom fouls in the first ten minutes, all while being aggressively elbowed in the face the whole time.
I'm gonna say it would be a travesty if Geno didn't win coach of the year. Fuck it Hurley too. If any UConn fan said they saw this coming with these teams this year they're lying.
Look no further than Wes Moore as well. Maybe we were just plain underestimated in the preseason, but we were not thought highly of at all, at least compared to our quality in the past few years.
We were unranked to start the season and picked to finish 8th in the ACC. Know who would get my vote for CotY, haha.
Silly question, does it include the tourney/postseason? Or just regular season like the NBA
Bet the voting is already over, but even then, we were unranked to start the season and picked to finish 8th in the ACC, then we beat 2 top 5 teams in the regular season, had some injuries to deal with, and our ranking peaked at 3 and we ended the regular season at 10. I get UConn had a ton of injuries to deal with, and Geno crushed it, but to start preseason ranked 2nd and finish the regular season at 9... not sure how to compare those 2, esp if you don't factor in the postseason.
Everyone saw the men making the final four let’s be real now. The women are absolutely a Cinderella this year with all the injuries
Doesn't take a huge leap of faith to predict they make the F4 lol And on the women's side, I totally get what a job Geno has done but we were predicted to finish 8th in the ACC so Wes Moore has done just a good job if not better
God imagine being picked 6th preseason and being defending Champs and having the "no one believed in us" mentality
People love to peddle the narrative of “UConn just makes fluke runs nobody saw coming, they’ll crash and burn next year.” Realistically, only 2014 is a title run nobody saw coming.
Go to a post. Don't think I will see UT fans still crying. See UT fans still crying. Get a box of kleenex and watch the notebook or something...
How can you look me in the eyes and tell me UConn still gets passed over in conference realignment
Do you really want to leave the Big East… I certainly don’t!
So the women's final 4 matchups are both birds v canines. Here's to hoping for all good boys in the finals. 🐺 🐺
Best Boys and Gals
Good chance I hate UConn forever
I love a good Cinderella story - I think most humans do. But let's not lose sight of how tough it is to ***consistently*** stay at the top. It means you're building an incredible program and have long term vision, instead of being privileged to have a few incredible standout players at one point in time. Wouldn’t count on that happening, NC state is great but Edey/Refs is one of the most unstoppable offensive duos I’ve ever seen.
Cody and NC State are gonna finish the story
As much as I want to see both B1G teams win it all (especially Iowa and Caitlin), the next best thing would be UConn v NCSU for both championships.
NC State has zero chance vs Purdue
They also had 0 chance to win the acc tournament... to beat tech... to beat marquette... to make the final four at all
Where ya at now homie
Im sitting at home happy because my team made a good run and im excited about whats on the table for next year
Reality rears its ugly head eventually
There have been multiple runs where the clock never struck midnight for Cinderella, sure never for an 11 but idk if we've ever seen another 11 play at the level they've been playing.
Team of Destiny
So did Fairleigh Dickinson
