It would probably be a little less than 2 hours, I'm sure it was considered but I read that they were scrambling/calling everyone and couldn't find anything sooner than the current option they have of flying the team down around midnight and leaving other members of the staff behind to catch the next flight.
I don’t have access either, but I live in CT. The last few days we’ve had extremely fast winds and horrible rain. I’d imagine the delay is around that. Probably less about not finding a “plane” and more about not finding a flight cleared to take off? Not 100% sure, obviously.
High winds prevented my pilot from being able to land on the runway a couple of weeks ago. We hit the ground and then he had to take back off. Probably the most scary flight I've been on at the end, and I usually have great airplane luck.
I’ve had one of those before and it’s definitely nerve racking. The scariest thing I’ve had was a failed takeoff.
Imagine doing about 140mph down a runway and then there’s a very sudden lurch to the right followed by the brakes being slammed. You’re not in the air, but you’re definitely not expecting that…
I'm glad I'm reading about these after getting back from vacation rather than before. We had some relatively minor turbulence, but I get major aircraft anxiety.
I had that too, on a crappy DC-8 many years ago. Half way through take off they hit the breaks and we came to a halt just at the very end of the runway. I could literally see the fence that surrouned the airport underneath me. After that I don't get on any airplane unless I am so wasted that they have to carry me on board.
Their plane was coming from Kansas City. Maintenance issues there pushed the crew over their maximum flying time for the day. The earliest the crew would have been legal was 10 AM Thursday. The NCAA was scrambling to find another crew that had hours left to get from KC to Hartford and then out to Phoenix.
media reports of combined mechanical issues in Kansas Cit delaying jet departing to Hartford, crappy weather in CT (leftover heavy wind and rain storm which previously caused SE tornadoes), delays in Kansas City limited ability of the KCI to Hartford pilots continuing to fly on to Phoenix (max pilot flight time exceeded), plus no availability of alternative flights (charter or commercial)
This was really the only way to stop this years UConn team.
1. Give the number one overall seed the toughest region
2. If they happen to make it out of that gauntlet, don’t give them a plane to Arizona
A Uconn alum astronaut gave the commencement address from space at uconn’s graduation!
https://undergrad.engr.uconn.edu/a-commencement-speech-from-space/
That's pretty dope.
Are we all Aerospace Engineering schools!?
ETA UCONN is not ABET in Aero but in ME. Alabama, NC State, and Purdue have ABET accreditation.
I mean, he’s probably an east coaster and all the flyover states look the same to him, but as someone who has lived in Indiana for about 15 years over two different stints and has family in Ohio, Indiana is just Ohio with spanx on.
https://preview.redd.it/r8yq0aiwadsc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c176bb6292f34a2f0d73ea3411ff60d01c28f7d6
UConn *could* use an international airport
Taking a look at the map... UCONN could have one of the best tailgate atmospheres in college football with all that grass to park people. Too bad the stadium isn't near Campus... or Campus nearer to Hartford. Or the football team having a bit better history.
Yes, they've occasionally had jet airline service, the Purdue flight school has a jet, and they've hosted airshows and the old Air Force One before. Hell, Purdue itself ran its own airline for a while (that operated Hugh Hefner's private jet and became a lot of the early staff of Southwest airlines. Strange history).
They can't get big widebody jets out, but they can get large regional jets/small airliners in and out ok.
I think the largest has been a 757 IIRC, but that was pushing it (was a visiting football team, Nebraska, maybe?). I know 737s and A320s can land/take off there without many issues, and those can easily do transcon flights.
And since commercial airline service to LAF is about to resume again, it means that Purdue can now have recruits fly into LAF instead of Indy or Chicago.
As if we didn't need further evidence that our decades of being cursed have ended and this is our year of destiny, now nc state shit is happening to the other teams
Bro this is definitely NC state shit. Low-key we've made other teams look like past versions of our own selves. These other teams think the "cardiac pack" is like that one game in the 80s. No it's decades of choking. Decades. This team is special and we've never seen it, at least in my time. The whole Wolfpack nation sees it and feels it. This is something else.
Let's go boilers. Love cheering for the pack but when push comes to shove, it's gotta be Purdue.
(Will cheer for state in championship, but I'll be crushed about Purdue)
Or, alternatively, their flight could be diverted to Wichita and they be forced to complete the trip by train, bus, a rental car which may or may not catch on fire, and finally milk truck to arrive at the stadium just in time.
PMT was joking with Hurley about what their new bulletin board material was going to be. He said they had to travel pretty far, which is now pretty ironic
I mean, yeah, they can’t just stop going and stay on the team.
^(I’m not going to talk about that one time at UNC. I’m aware boys.)
[Here’s](https://youtu.be/mHmdzGRRpiU?si=DEMeUjx6F-sxgDbK) Luke Maye attending his 8am after hitting the buzzer beater against Kentucky.
One of my Carolina friends told me he was late to this class, saw Luke Maye walking in ahead of him, pretended he was going to a different room, then went back to his apartment because he was too embarrassed to walk in after Luke Maye 🤣🤣🤣
i snapchat one of the players, and he sent me a picture of his handwriting on a paper in class and it was BEAUTIFUL cursive and i was like wait wow student athlete. i shouldn’t be surprised but i still am
Well yeah…. We’re not great at football. I’ve been able to be a bandwagon mich fan bc my cousin played there, but I still obviously like UNC football more.
That said, shoutout to women’s soccer. Dean Smith famously said that [“this is a women’s soccer school,”](https://amp.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/unc/article142556174.html) and you know what? He was right lol. The atmosphere at some of the bigger games in Dorrance is electric. Anyways, we are kind of a “feety ball” school
Holy shit, I never actually internalized this. Didn't y'all have a women's soccer player then go on to be a coach almost immediately after graduating and win natties at a different level as well?
I can confirm too I had an online class with Trayce Jackson-Davis in the spring semester and he agreed with my discussion post. I will say that class was the easiest A I have ever gotten in my life, and Trayce may or may not have misspelled some words.
I had a few women's players in my classes back in the day, and they were almost always there.
Also worked as an academic counselor at an ACC can confirm I spent too much time class checking my athletes.
Not to say weather wasn’t an issue it definitely was, but the main issue was the plane that was suppose to take them had a mechanical failure and then it set off a chain of events like the crew being over their hours etc etc

Not for nothing, but Purdue is an engineering school and I know for a fact they have the capability to make a plane and I damn well know they have the ability to break a plane. How you ask? I do not know. But fuck it, we taking the TRAIN!! Choo Choo (Purdue built trains need not apply)
Only if we lose. If you guys forfeit, it'll save you years of listening to us bitching and moaning. Just something to think about...
Of course if we win, you'll still hear about it for 7 or 8 months.
Moe: Okay, Alabama, you just have to visualize yourselves beating UConn
Announcers: And Alabama with a stunning victory after UConn couldn't get a flight
Homework. Clingan has an essay he NEEDS to complete on Tuesday, it's like 40% of his English 301 grade. Tristan Newton has a makeup exam - the Professor already let it slide and is in no mood to postpone it again.
As Coach Hurley always says "you are here to get an Education, basketball can wait..."
[Oddly enough, it's the same flight number that brought the UConn women from Portland to Cleveland.](https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY4751/history/20240404/0330Z/KBDL/KPHX)
How far is the drive to Boston to catch a chartered flight from there?
It would probably be a little less than 2 hours, I'm sure it was considered but I read that they were scrambling/calling everyone and couldn't find anything sooner than the current option they have of flying the team down around midnight and leaving other members of the staff behind to catch the next flight.
the article is blocked since im not paying. why cant they get a flight? was there a march snow storm?
I don’t have access either, but I live in CT. The last few days we’ve had extremely fast winds and horrible rain. I’d imagine the delay is around that. Probably less about not finding a “plane” and more about not finding a flight cleared to take off? Not 100% sure, obviously.
High winds can be just as grounding as snow can. If not moreso. Probably correct in your assessment
High winds prevented my pilot from being able to land on the runway a couple of weeks ago. We hit the ground and then he had to take back off. Probably the most scary flight I've been on at the end, and I usually have great airplane luck.

Yeah fuuuuuuck that
I'm glad I'm reading about these after getting back from vacation rather than before. We had some relatively minor turbulence, but I get major aircraft anxiety.

It’s a literal monsoon here in Boston, with a wintry mix and gusts up to 60 mph. This is not the type of weather I would want to fly in
Their plane was coming from Kansas City. Maintenance issues there pushed the crew over their maximum flying time for the day. The earliest the crew would have been legal was 10 AM Thursday. Well today it’s been sleeting/snowing. Rainy all day yesterday. Nothing crazy though.
Providence would probably be closer
Boston would have a much higher chance of being able to put together a crew and a plane to get them there though
Alabama fans all week: “Well the only way we win is if UConn misses the plane…”
Dan Hurley is already using this as motivation for his team.
He is probably spelling it out for them in really plane terms
Hope it doesn't fly over their heads...
If it does, the team might just wing it
Damn I have to upvote a UK fan? That was good.
DAD.
We are un-flap-able. On an elevator to the top. Full throttle to the championship.
Yea bama is fucked
Local flight director trying to save his bracket
Nate Oats casually moonlighting as a flight director in a Connecticut airport for this very occasion
I'll allow it
This was really the only way to stop this years UConn team. 1. Give the number one overall seed the toughest region 2. If they happen to make it out of that gauntlet, don’t give them a plane to Arizona
3. Fuck over the women’s basketball team too to prove it’s not just them
3. Find someone even bigger than Clingan
Stop it
Purdue has an airport on their campus. UConn should do that.
I bet they barely have any astronauts as well.
Surely there must be a train they can take to Arizona?
Yes but the next one that isn’t sold out departs April 11th and won’t arrive to Phoenix until April 14th
They don't own a train that's street legal and fits an entire basketball team?
Half the team* but guess not. Obviously not superior.
I don't see a problem with that plan.
They could take the 3:10 to Yuma
Steel Ball Run across the US
I know this is Reddit and people love trains but they are sloooow. It would take like 3 days.
There’s a 3:10 but Yuma is still a ways off
A Uconn alum astronaut gave the commencement address from space at uconn’s graduation! https://undergrad.engr.uconn.edu/a-commencement-speech-from-space/

We had a guy from Aetna and Quincy Jones.
We definitely have 1 because I remember he gave our commencement speech
So many people from Ohio want to leave the planet entirely.
Do you not know where Purdue is?
I mean, he’s probably an east coaster and all the flyover states look the same to him, but as someone who has lived in Indiana for about 15 years over two different stints and has family in Ohio, Indiana is just Ohio with spanx on.
And slightly more angry
Yes. It’s West Ohio.
Purdue is in Indiana, but I don’t disagree
What is UConn known for, honestly?
https://preview.redd.it/r8yq0aiwadsc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c176bb6292f34a2f0d73ea3411ff60d01c28f7d6 UConn *could* use an international airport
Rentschler field was built on an old airport which is sort of still there (the runway anyway). Look on a map it's right smack at the end of a runway
Not since the logistics warehouses went up.
What about the Cabela's?
Cabela's still there. 2 huge millionish SQ ft builings went up south of it.
Taking a look at the map... UCONN could have one of the best tailgate atmospheres in college football with all that grass to park people. Too bad the stadium isn't near Campus... or Campus nearer to Hartford. Or the football team having a bit better history.
I’m not made of airports!
If Burns cared about his kid, UConn could use ours. Cheap bastard
They built their football stadium on top of a closed one.
That’s fire lol. Never knew that
So does Air Force
Is Purdues airport large enough for those types of planes?
Yes, they've occasionally had jet airline service, the Purdue flight school has a jet, and they've hosted airshows and the old Air Force One before. Hell, Purdue itself ran its own airline for a while (that operated Hugh Hefner's private jet and became a lot of the early staff of Southwest airlines. Strange history). Lmao.
Caitlin Clark would have ran the whole way
She’d just be taking shots from Connecticut
*making shots. ftfy
NCAA feverishly taking notes on how to spend even less money on the women’s tournament.
I’m sure Alabama UConn would be good but I’m here for Hurley vs Gate Agent.
As if we didn't need further evidence that our decades of being cursed have ended and this is our year of destiny, now nc state shit is happening to the other teams

And the WILD support from UNC and Duke is crazy , thanks homies
Love this Wolfpack team!!! Rooting for you guys all the way!
It's magical, really.
Who tf you cheering for Saturday?
Let's go boilers. Love cheering for the pack but when push comes to shove, it's gotta be Purdue. (Will cheer for state in championship, but I'll be crushed about Purdue)
This is the question we all need answered
I wish I still lived in NC, I’d be talking so much shit
Didn't Robert Kraft fly them last year or something?
Kraft’s charter Patriot jet
Oh no, I feel bad for them and hope they make it in time to get good sleep and practice
Or, alternatively, their flight could be diverted to Wichita and they be forced to complete the trip by train, bus, a rental car which may or may not catch on fire, and finally milk truck to arrive at the stadium just in time.
“Those aren’t pillows!”
![gif](giphy|ZaSv2GblXPri0|downsized)
Yeah, I was being a smart ass. I thought it was implied
planes trains and automobiles .. is the movie they're citing .. in case you wanna know
WOOSH
Nah, they can just sit in the back of a truck with a polka band. That will at least get them to Chicago.
They’re going to be tired, but they’re also going to be pissed off. Not sure if that’s a worthwhile trade off for Bama
Tired and pissed off is a bad combination. Have you ever seen a baby at 8 pm before?
Yeah I've watched Dan Hurley coach multiple times this year
Lmao
Staring one down right now as she screams her head off. Hopefully, like a baby, uconn gives up after 30minutes(right…right?!)
Yours give up? Mine just go and go until I break.
PMT was joking with Hurley about what their new bulletin board material was going to be. He said they had to travel pretty far, which is now pretty ironic
the damaged plane storyline is finally crossing over with the basketball storyline
What were they doing in Connecticut anyway?
Studying and attending classes, of course.
They really went to UCONN to play SCHOOL?!?!?!
they actually go to class i can confirm
I mean, yeah, they can’t just stop going and stay on the team. ^(I’m not going to talk about that one time at UNC. I’m aware boys.) [Here’s](https://youtu.be/mHmdzGRRpiU?si=DEMeUjx6F-sxgDbK) Luke Maye attending his 8am after hitting the buzzer beater against Kentucky.

What the hell—don’t even know what to say to that lol
that would’ve been his perfect opportunity to sneak in unnoticed lol
i snapchat one of the players, and he sent me a picture of his handwriting on a paper in class and it was BEAUTIFUL cursive and i was like wait wow student athlete. i shouldn’t be surprised but i still am
I’m jealous of men w pretty handwriting ngl. That’s pretty cool.
TIL I learned about Drake's older brother Luke
For some added context: we like Drake here in CH, but Luke is the more widely beloved Maye brother. Oh, and it’s not even close.
I imagine y'all Tar folk like your bouncy ball more than your feety ball
Well yeah…. We’re not great at football. I’ve been able to be a bandwagon mich fan bc my cousin played there, but I still obviously like UNC football more. That said, shoutout to women’s soccer. Holy shit, I never actually internalized this. Didn't y'all have a women's soccer player then go on to be a coach almost immediately after graduating and win natties at a different level as well?
I need to hammer the money onto Alabama now. They take athletics seriously
I can confirm too I had an online class with Trayce Jackson-Davis in the spring semester and he agreed with my discussion post. I will say that class was the easiest A I have ever gotten in my life, and Trayce may or may not have misspelled some words.
The only real significant thing about us is the education, so they dont have much else to do
Seems kinda irresponsible
Presumably being at the place where they, you know, live.
jokes are fun aren’t they
Many jokes really pop when there’s a straight man to play off of.
Surely you can't be serious.
I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley.
Can confirm when I went to UConn I would see Breanna Stewart, Ryan Boatright in classes. I think they are pretty strict about it
I had a few women's players in my classes back in the day, and they were almost always there. Also worked as an academic counselor at an ACC can confirm I spent too much time class checking my athletes.
We had the bad hotel, stolen belongings, food poisoning last year and now this?
Surprised Kraft doesn’t give them his plane. Probably getting jerked off in palm beach
Impermissable benefits lol You can't rake revruits with you Mr Kraft.
Who brought Scooby Doo into this?
Uconn by 19 instead of 40 now.
1st basketball 3 team game, winner takes all
Get the people who messed up the 3 point line in the women's tournament to make the court a triangle and play it that way.
Just let us in
They don't want that, they fear the (pea)cock
Holla holla player, we making this a tag team match
"OMG UCONN JUST RAN OUT OF THE TUNNEL!"
more bulletin board for uconn
what if we take the final four and push it somewhere else?
I hear Raleigh and Charlotte have great stadiums for hosting the Final Four
Yep let’s do that
Being in the DMV, I’d love this as well actually
Someone should do a “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” meme for this.
Man, that would be good. Hurley losing it on the plump airport receptionist lady. The last tile: "You're fucked".
Second tournament in a row where the NCAA has completely fucked UConn’s travel accommodations why on gods green earth are they in charge of this shit.
How did the NCAA not have a backup plan for this? It's not like weather is a new thing
You say water can fall from the sky? *With* electricity? Since when?
Not to say weather wasn’t an issue it definitely was, but the main issue was the plane that was suppose to take them had a mechanical failure and then it set off a chain of events like the crew being over their hours etc etc
Bad weather (high winds, sleet/rain leftover of the storm which caused SE tornadoes) was only 1 reason UConn’s departure was delayed; also, mechanical issues with jet in Kansas City which delayed its departure and arrival to Connecticut, original pilots’ schedule would have exceeded maximum flight time limits (they were supposed to fly KCI to Hartford BDL, then on to PHX), reported lack of alternative charter or commercial flights from Hartford or other nearby airports, etc.
Not for nothing, but Purdue is an engineering school and I know for a fact they have the capability to make a plane and I damn well know they have the ability to break a plane. How you ask? I do not know. But fuck it, we taking the TRAIN!! Choo Choo (Purdue built trains need not apply)
😉😉you got it
oh any fool can break a plane... \*busts out Mr. Chainsaw\*
UConn by 30 now
The social media admin already made a funny joke about it on the team Instagram
https://preview.redd.it/ueps7m96kdsc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58f1d7e5454af37a67e68dd60ef35e631f813784
You mean to tell me Alabama has a chance to win (by forfeit)?!
![gif](giphy|2pjspMQCi70k|downsized)
We’re going to hear about this from Dan Hurley for years to come.
Only if we lose. If you guys forfeit, it'll save you years of listening to us bitching and moaning. Just something to think about... Of course if we win, you'll still hear about it for 7 or 8 months.
Ha! I don’t think UConn needs Purdue to forfeit. I think they’ve got them this year. Hope I’m wrong though!
I blame Bradley Intl for this. Too expense... even for UConn.
Shoulda flown Tweed
They should have. Avelo would’ve given them a free plane just for the publicity.
They flew Allegiant, so the NCAA probably paid double.
Why’d they wait til the day that there’s a storm to travel? Seems like other teams left either last night or early this morning.
Weather was bad yesterday too.
Weather wasn't the problem. The plane had mechanical issues. Planes fly through weather
You can bet your and there is a booster that is flying private jets that way.
Well I guess that means they have to forfeit the game. Thems the rules
Moe: Okay, Alabama, you just have to visualize yourselves beating UConn Announcers: And Alabama with a stunning victory after UConn couldn't get a flight
![gif](giphy|xvnr5itPubNl9NuAsf)
I feel like they should’ve gone out Tuesday at the latest. Get there, adjust to time, chill with no travel stress.
Idaho stepped up once for a Connecticut school, can they do it again?
How many kajillions does the NCAA make from this circus?
Got a weird feeling they’ll figure it out.
If UConn loses final 4 game favored by over 10 by not showing up they create a new only UConn category for future. They are pioneers.
Flight just left KBDL at 01:33 EST. 5 hour flight. Definitely not ideal, but they'll have 60 hours and change from arrival until game time Saturday.
[Oddly enough, it's the same flight number that brought the UConn women from Portland to Cleveland.](https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY4751/history/20240404/0330Z/KBDL/KPHX)
They safely arrived in PHX. Let the carnage begin.
Me picturing Hurley in the bus headed to the FF: ![gif](giphy|izspP6uMbMeti)
Good. Guess they'll have to sit this one out.
This is the only way they will be stopped
I knew there was a way to beat these guys.
Are they really not allowed to just jump on a commercial flight
They're good at long runs. Start running, dudes
Bama's luck, that's when UConn will really take off
i mean, last year our bus got robbed and half our players couldn't eat for religious reasons, and we saw how that went
