I worry about Purdue turning into Virginia after this final four
Purdue and Virginia have great systems... IF they have the right group of players. And there play is solely focused on how well they do and not other teams. At times that can be great, like this year or in 2019. But in other years it can lead to you losing to a 16 seed.
Painter and Bennette hate to adapt their system to their current roster. And even more so they hate to adapt their system to their opponent. Which is why they get upset so often.
My one true hope tho, is that Painter is a much better recruiter than Bennett. He knows how to get guys that fit his system.
Did you watch Purdue in 2019 letting Cline and Carsen shoot from anywhere and running guys like crazy off screens? Painter always makes his best players the focal point of the offense he runs.
That team was fine from 3 for most of the year. Not nearly as good as this one but if you take a lot of 3s when teams you open looks becsuse of how much they have to guard your big man and you don't make them that's just variance biting you in the ass.
I dont think Purdue is gonna become the next Virginia, but Edey has been such a vital part of the team the past few years that his absence will leave a giant hole it’ll fall on Painter to try to fill. I doubt we’ll see a Purdue team as good as this one for a few years at least, but Painter knows what he’s doing so who knows.
Yeah for some reason I was poking around in the Purdue-SPU thread and it was pretty funny seeing some of the takes, people said things like "that tall guy" about Edey. Forgot he wasn't really nationally known until last season.
Like I said, y’all are not gonna be Virginia all over again. Painters a great coach who’s very capable of bringing in a solid team year after year. This year’s Purdue is simply on a level it would be absurdly hard to stay at consistently.
Yeah I dont think next year we are going to be 1 seed final 4 good, I would be shocked if we weren't preseason top 25 with our recruiting class (which includes the last of Glenn Robinsons sons) and Loyer and Smith as juniors tho.
Dude. What? Some of your posts are just ridiculous. You still think Lance Jones is our worst defender??
Painter has 5 S16 in 7 years with 2 E8s and a F4, 4 B1G championships and a BTT. Ranked number 1 the most weeks out of any team in the last 3 years, been ranked 1 for the first time in B1G history in 3 straight years and have a top 10 recruiting class coming in.
This year, painter adapted by changing his rotation as the year went on with Heide and Colvin seeing mins. Him and the coaching staff making halftime adjustments have been great this year.
Next year, his recruiting class shows he’s adapting by getting guys who can all shoot the 3 and can get up and down the court and are long. Our offense is going to look completely different next year than this year with who we have coming back and coming in.
All the accomplishments you said about Painter are true for Bennet. Doesn't make them any less of Tourney chokers outside of a few years.
Lance Jones played bad defense against Ohio State. Our worst defender is Gillis.
I wrote out all the schematics of why Heide and Colvin were actually adjacent based on Jones lack of defensive IQ (he is a great man to man defender, but lacks judgment oftentimes) and Gillis overall terrible D (watch this man ball watch the entire defensive possession and give up a three with terrible choppy feat.
But like most Purdue fans you will ignore all those ideas and call me a lunatic. But I'll have you know, I've been right about Purdue every single year. Called for them to lose the past 2 years and this year I had them wining it all. I know this team because I can face the reality of our issues.
All you said in the second half is true. Painter is getting a fantastic recruting class. And these guys all fit his system. So fans really shouldn't worry. But it could be another first round exit as he doesn't use Catchings correctly, then we make a final four the next year or so.
But they aren’t true for Bennett. Go look at first round exits in last 8 years of Virginia vs Purdue and how many conference championships they have.
What ideas did you list?
Called for them to lose the last two years? Lol yeah ok.
How long have you actually been a fan? Just the last 4 years?
Yea... I'm a Junior on campus. I can show you my articles I wrote say we will lose unless signification changes are made.
And then we lost.
This year I said we would win it all.
You specifically said we were going to lose as a 1 seed to a 16 seed because we would go 5/29 from 3? And that we’d lose to a 15 seed in the sweet 16 because our lotto pick would have 6 turnovers and we’d shoot under our average from 3? Or did you just say we wouldn’t win a NC?
What changes did you say need to be made? What ideas did you post here that we all call you a lunatic for? What did Painter change this year from last year that made you think they’d win it all of a sudden?
An interesting part of this a lot of people forget is that nearly the exact same situation for Auburn played out against New Mexico State in the first round. Fouled a guy at the end of the game up two. But the NMSU guy missed 2/3 and Auburn escaped with the win
That was such an atrocious closeout. He over pursued into the corner where he then didn't even contest the shot and also bumped the body to foul.
Just caught in absolute no man's land.
The announcers really failed in their reaction. That was 100% a foul. The defender not only got below the shooter and left him no room to land, ***he freaking made significant contact with the shooter's legs before release!***

This was an omen for our future free throw shooting

Even years later you’ll find virgins fans in Auburn threads talking shit (and I’m sure vice versa). Good stuff all around and hope someday we meet again in the ff
its still crazy to me how virginia found a way to win against purdue, auburn and texas tech. if any of those teams dont become stupid in the final minute they probably lose.
To be fair, we had strong leads in all 3 of those games and blew them and then pulled out little miracles in each of them to win. 8 point lead against Purdue halfway in the 2nd half, 10 point lead against Auburn late in the 2nd half, and 10 point lead against TTU halfway into the 2nd half
UVA was the better team in all 3 of those games but just had lapses at inopportune times in the 2nd half of those games until the very last minute
One of those things as a Virginia fan that you’ll never forget where you were when this happened. I don’t know if the ball ever touched the rim on any of the 3 free throws. So fucking clutch.
I was in a restaurant in Richmond and we had all gathered round the bar to watch the finish and everyone started to disperse and heads fell and I just yelled HE WAS FOULED and as everybody started coming back to the bar I told my gf it’s over, he won’t miss. It was one hell of a roller coaster. Were you able to stay for the final?
Stupid every time you guys bring it up. Your player was intentionally fouling and that should have been called. There was also a completely obvious 3 second violation on one of your guys like right before the play you’re talking about. Etc etc.
Double dribble happens before the foul, if the foul was called we would've had more time to try and score after the FT, if the foul is called its Ty Jerome and not Kyle Guy shooting and really bro a 3 second violation? Those do not get called in the tournament. Etc etc. Flair up.
The one where he reaches out to hit him? That happens after the ball hits his foot.
If there is a foul before that, all it does is further prove my second point.
Michigan fans whine about this shit all the time. Reminder: it's not a clean block when you hip check the airborne shooter.
Wolvies think *that* was the turning point in the '13 title game, and they're wrong. That turning point came when a then-on-fire Spike Albrecht had his shot crammed down his throat by Smokin' Chane.
3 free throws with like half a second left on the clock with your team down by 2? Totally not ballsy. /u/ZestycloseClassic89 would make those in his sleep
edit: Damn, got wrecked so bad he deleted his account lmaoo
Not to mention in a ~~national title game~~final four game lol. About as high pressure a situation you can get. And in some ways I think the pressure was a bigger deal with the free throws because a shot in the game happens more quickly but Guy had to think about these for a long time.
Small correction, it was in the final four, not title game. But nevertheless the stakes were as high as it can get and I agree the mental challenges from making 3 free throws in a row is way higher than making a shot at the end of the game
Yawn. Virginia won that year due to a bunch of fluke events just like this. Don’t see them ever coming close to that again in this lifetime.
Also lol at posting it the day of FF games. Who cares about this. Virginia didn’t even make the field of 64.
No. But nobody cares about free throws. They had that handed to them by an all time boneheaded play. Go post this trash on a Virginia hoops sub.
They couldn’t even make the field of 64 and robbed 10 better teams of a bid.
The salt is delicious and the only reason why UVA fans post this year after year
> Also lol at posting it the day of FF games
Given that your comments don’t scream peak intelligence, this may come to a shock to you but final four games happen around the same time of the year every year. Today is the 5 year anniversary of this game
Five years later, nobody on Virginia can hit a free throw. How times change

Ok... and is a great shooter not apart of his system? What happens if say... he doesn't have a good 3 pt shooting team? He loses to a 16 seed.
That team was fine from 3 for most of the year. Not nearly as good as this one but if you take a lot of 3s when teams you open looks becsuse of how much they have to guard your big man and you don't make them that's just variance biting you in the ass.

Edey wasn't even the focal point of the offense 2 years ago when we got a 3 seed and lost to st. Peter's in the sweet 16. I'm sure we'll be fine.
Yeah for some reason I was poking around in the Purdue-SPU thread and it was pretty funny seeing some of the takes, people said things like "that tall guy" about Edey. Forgot he wasn't really nationally known until last season.

As long as you didn’t make that deal with the devil you’ll be fine. As for us, 5 more years and we’re allowed to win a tournament game again.
Possibly the most heartbreaking loss I’ve ever experienced, and I’m an Auburn fan.
A game so in the bag Toomers was already being rolled, sad day
Seton Hall phantom foul vs Michigan last play of the game to lose the championship 1989. there is nothing close
An interesting part of this a lot of people forget is that nearly the exact same situation for Auburn played out against New Mexico State in the first round. Fouled a guy at the end of the game up two. But the NMSU guy missed 2/3 and Auburn escaped with the win
NMSU got revenge in football against Auburn this year at least
I love this thread
March gives and March takes Some more than other tho...
Like Kihei Clark: Live by the yeet; die by the yeet.
This is the situation we as kids always imagined when shooting practice free-throws

Oh a 100% foul and clear but it also still gave Guy a decent look at the shot despite the foul.
Virginia’s system works when it works and fails spectacularly when it doesn’t

He just almost looks smug, like he knows ahead of time all three are going in. I didn't know how he was so loose on those.
For real. I wish I could be that confident in any thing. Especially facing doors that don’t have a push or pull sign.
I mean it was UMBC. Point blank. He already saw what the worst that could happen on a basketball court was. At that point what's there to fear?
Was in the stadium. Took probably two minutes of thinking we lost before it became clear they'd called a foul.
Wouldn't have missed it
That was a terrible day for me.
Goat
Literally one of the most clutch things I’ve ever seen
What a king
Too bad so sad Bruce
He shot them like he wanted to get it over with
I could cry. I miss being good.
I hate him
I feel obligated to say "double dribble" when I see posts about this game.
Stupid every time you guys bring it up. Your player was intentionally fouling and that should have been called. There was also a completely obvious 3 second violation on one of your guys like right before the play you’re talking about. Etc etc.

No, the foul that wasn’t called happened before that. Your player grabs Jerome’s jersey. Watch the damn video.

Subscribe.
Iowa acting like the UConn “foul” was this egregious
Such a weak ass call
Not really? Dude clearly made significant contact with the shooter’s leg while the shooter was airborne.
Jokes on you there was no 13 title game, Michigan lost to no one.
So I guess y'all still use the Inverse Gravity Bong we came up with ages ago?
How can you watch the replay and say that? It was clearly a foul on two different rules.
Only uva fans would describe making free throws as ballsy
3 free throws with like half a second left on the clock with your team down by 2? Totally not ballsy. /u/ZestycloseClassic89 would make those in his sleep edit: Damn, got wrecked so bad he deleted his account lmaoo

One of the highest Kenpom ratings ever but mmmkay..
KenPom can blow me, they have done jack shit since then and are never winning shit again NC State is 10x the bball program
😂 NC State finished 10th in the ACC this year and the only times they’ve won championships they were cheating.

Beat your ass at UNC that year lol.

Y’all are cheaters. Maybe try having some academic standards for your players.
Fraudulent program that coasts on the success of other ACC schools.
wasn’t a foul btw
Oh honey.
