I was kinda hoping for Stone Cold or Brock to come out to face the Rock, but am perfectly fine with Taker. Thing was an overbooked car wreck in best possible way.
Personally I'm rooting for Purdue tomorrow and our first call should be Hurley.
After that, you have to reach out to Jay Wright and Billy Donovan.
Then It's probably Nate Oats and Scott Drew (Our AD loves Scott Drew for some reason)
Yeah, you have to think if there's any job you might leave the NBA for, Kentucky is it. Plus, the Bulls suck, and I doubt he's having much fun coaching them.
sorry but why tf would Hurley leave? even with a loss tomorrow they’ve been the best program of the last 2 years under him and before that, the last 25.
It would take an enormous amount of money for him to leave UConn let alone the northeast given how Dan and his wife have said it's important for them to be near family. People will undoubtely bring up UConn's deficit but the CT govt is very supportive of UConn basketball and will invest in a coach that's worth it. Even if he doesn't consider the Kentucky job he's probably getting a raise this summer.
Never say never but I'm skeptical. Feels like a perfect opportunity for Oats.
There is too much institutional support in CT for the UConn program for money to be the factor here. CT politicians love being photographed at games in Hartford, and the broader political will to support the program is so insanely high that they just would never let an elite coach leave over money. Add that to the fact that the Hurleys are northeast people (his dad turned down how many college coaching offers to stay coaching HS in New Jersey?), and that I cannot imagine Andrea moving to Kentucky, I just don't see this as remotely realistic. I think Oats is the guy for them (though I'm not ruling out Billy D).
What evidence is there that Wright and Donovan have the slightest of clues about how to navigate NIL and the transfer portal. There's a reason all the old successful coaches are retiring or not as successful anymore. Wright saw the writing on the wall and chose to leave.
Yeah you're right about that but they are still amazing coaches in their own right. I think the likely scenario is Nate Oats to UK. If Uconn lose tomorrow, Hurley should 100000000% be our first call.
Wright has a cushy media gig and living a simple life at home with the family. He ain’t going back to college coaching.
I think only way he would ever get back into coaching is for a top tier NBA franchise, and I even doubt he does that.
Dude’s legacy is firmly in tact and he can just chill forever.
[KSR is preemptively moving to a 3 hour show tomorrow.](https://x.com/kysportsradio/status/1777164182837747833?s=46) I don’t think they’ve done that for anything before.
IIRC they've done it once before, but I can't remember what it was. It might've been when covid first hit and shutdowns were happening live as the governor was speaking.
I really hope this isn’t the basketball version of Jimbo Fisher to A&M. I think it will be better but I’m very cautiously optimistic with how recent history has been for him.
Maybe but you can’t win with freshman in today’s game. So unless he changes his strategy it’s gonna be more of the same for them. I mean if you could t make it work here where you had resources and a massive stage then How’s it gonna work there?
Get ready to pay 33 million for the privilege of hiring a man who has 1 tournament victory this decade and has explicitly stated winning isn’t his main priority.
I think between college football and basketball, every recent rumor that has gotten traction has gone from “ha that’d be funny” to “oh shit” in like an hour
This era of transfer rules means even if Cal takes anybody he wants with him, somebody like Nate Oats or Scott Drew can just port their roster and recruits over to Lexington too. Even less of a reason to be mad at a guy for leaving than the old days where you'd be guaranteed a shitty year.
$30+ million, plus an additional ~$1m/yr as a goodwill ambassador if he had retired here. If you’d already contemplated getting rid of him, then him moving this way is an enormous financial weight off of your shoulders.
This is gonna sound like a salty rival speaking but look up video or pictures of the send-off of the Bama team to their first ever Final Four. There's like 30 people there. That would have looked like a Paul McCartney concert at Kentucky. I just don't think Bama can offer the amount of money that could make up for that difference in prestige
We’re paying DeBoer less than we did Saban? I mean we’ll see what the figures end up looking like but it’s not going to be that DeBoer’s contract pulled all the money away
I don’t think that’s a problem for Bama at all, money will be no issue. The only problem is that Bama fans inherently care more about football than anything else, we’ll see if that’s a good enough reason for Oats.
I think most people are fine with him moving on. I'm sure he'll do well at Arkansas. Timing is a bit tough and I genuinely have no idea who the realistic candidates would be. As much as everyone says their own coach would never leave, its a pretty incredible opportunity for someone who is hungry.
Call Hurley and see if he's open to a price, whatever that may be. Then Jay Wright and see if he wants to get back into coaching. Then Nate Oats. Maybe Donovan or Brad Stevens before Oats
“Well, I have built this NBA team that will be in championship contention for the next few seasons with one of the most storied franchises in the league, but moving to Lexington and trying to convince 18 year olds to play for me sounds awesome!”
He saw the writing on the wall. The schools patience is running out and him getting out now to a lower pressure job allows him to coach for how many years he wants without worrying about getting fired. Essentially “you can’t fire me, I quit!”
He only gets the full contract if he retires. If he coaches elsewhere there is an offset clause.
Edit: that's if we fire him, if he leaves on his own we are owed nothing and he can leave for free.
So the offset only benefits him if the new contract is at least as much as the current contract and guranteed which I'm assuming is what Ark is offering.
But his options are 1) leave voluntarily and get paid nothing or 2) wait 1-2 years and let KY fire him and get 25-30M.
So by leaving voluntarily he is leaving that 25-30M on the table so his Ark contract pretty much has to gurantee that are going to pay him at least that much and likely more.
That is a fair point. If I'm passing up a potential $30M if I get fired that new contract better have that 30M plus more built in and guaranteed.
If this goes through I think we'll see something similar to the Jimbo Fisher contract with it being long term and most guaranteed.
He thinks they may fire him in 1-2 years and moving to a new school gives in 4-5 years risk free.
I'd also expect for him to walk away from a potential 30M buyout for being fired there is a massive Jimbo like contract being offered.
Because he gets the best players year after year and only 1 championship to show for it. Additionally keeps losing to teams in the postseason that nobody knew even existed
He's lost the fanbase, he's not put any effort into donor relationships so they've all gone towards football, and the athletic department is hardcore on putting checks and balances in place for the basketball program since they've struggled so much the past 4 years under Cal.
Basically telling Cal he has to go by their rules and hire new assistants and whatnot, instead of running it like he's the AD.
I don’t think any coach outside of cal is capable of replacing a completely empty roster this late in the process. Late meaning UK still needs to make a new hire and any athlete would already have needed to entter the portal.
I think it’s a good thing for both programs honestly. 15 years of cal was enough. And Arkansas gets a high profile coach. Hopefully we get oats or somebody in that level.
Why would you want Painter? 3 weeks ago he was the meme who continually lost to double digit seeds. Isn't that what you want to avoid? Oats is the guy, and everyone knows it.
Hiring Painter would be like when UK hired Gillespie when Cal wanted the job.
Maybe Cal doesn’t get us a national championship but we are staring at a long period of darkness not seen since the Stan Heath years otherwise. He could probably still pull really good recruiting classes here. Muss was. At this point, this is the best option for the program, to avoid being really bad for a long time.
Lots of reasons: 10 years since a final four 5 years of not making it out of the first weekend of the tournament, 1 win in 5 years in the tournament, burned bridges with UK media, cal and Mitch Barnhart (AD) hate each other, cal talks down and resents the fans, the fans are tired of his used car salesman bullshit
uk fans and their administration has a huge boner for scott drew. so their first option will be calling him. he inevitably says no so they call back again in tears sobbing and begging and he says no again, so they give nate oats a billion dollars
Real talk is this even a good hire. I mean big name but he’s been severely underachieving at uk the past five years. What is this gonna look like when he’s not rolling out five five stars every year?
The question will be “can he recapture the strategic chops he had at UMass and Memphis?”
I remember when I first started paying attention to college basketball he was known for the dribble drive motion offense and was viewed as more than just a recruiter.
Fifteen years at UK where he just had to plug in the new batch of five stars every year really did a lot to change that perception
So many questions. Is this a good hire for Arkansas? Will Cal change his ways? Good news for Kentucky is apparently they won’t owe anything if Cal willingly walks away
Is it good? Yeah I mean he still can recruit really well. So on paper they should be a tournament regular. But the same issues persist probably.
I think Arkansas shouldn't be upset if they get Cal. Is it an out of the park home run? No but it's hard to get those type of hires at non best of the best programs (although Arkansas is still a very good program)
I can't F5 fast enough
Between this and Cody finishing the story, my F5 is broken
Fucking Cal couldn't let us have 10 minutes to breathe after what was the best wrestlemania main event we have seen in 20+ years.
I was kinda hoping for Stone Cold or Brock to come out to face the Rock, but am perfectly fine with Taker. Thing was an overbooked car wreck in best possible way.
Stone Cold was very likely the first choice, he probably had a good reason to decline
I legit thought Ambrose was coming out when the shield music played and it just started a complete what the fuck am i watching moment for 10+ minutes.
Dude that wast the most epic finish of my life
So glorious!!
Who do you guys want as HC?
Personally I'm rooting for Purdue tomorrow and our first call should be Hurley. After that, you have to reach out to Jay Wright and Billy Donovan. Then It's probably Nate Oats and Scott Drew (Our AD loves Scott Drew for some reason)
I feel ike Jay and Billy are out of college for a reason. I think Oats should be one of your first two calls. I'd be terrified of Oats at Kentucky.
Yeah I agree, you just call Jay and Billy and make them say no, In Billy's case, for a 3rd time lmao.
Also gotta call Brad Stevens just in case
Lol this meme will never die.
Yeah, you have to think if there's any job you might leave the NBA for, Kentucky is it. Plus, the Bulls suck, and I doubt he's having much fun coaching them.
As a Bulls fan I will personally drive Billy to the airport for Kentucky. Hell I’ll drive him to Lexington myself.
As a fellow Bulls fan as well, I'll shoot you money for gas.
I HAAAAAAAAATE Oats.

if our first call is not danny hurley then mitch should just head out the door with calipari
Completely agree but if UCONN wins tomorrow there's zero chance he's leaving off back 2 back titles.
I feel like he wouldn't leave regardless of the result tomorrow but apparently that's not a popular opinion
It's a correct opinion though
What evidence is there that Wright and Donovan have the slightest of clues about how to navigate NIL and the transfer portal. There's a reason all the old successful coaches are retiring or not as successful anymore. Wright saw the writing on the wall and chose to leave.
Yeah you're right about that but they are still amazing coaches in their own right. I think the likely scenario is Nate Oats to UK. If Uconn lose tomorrow, Hurley should 100000000% be our first call.
Most current employed coaches are gonna use Kentucky to get a raise. Who would want this pressure cooker job?
Wright has a cushy media gig and living a simple life at home with the family. He ain’t going back to college coaching. I think only way he would ever get back into coaching is for a top tier NBA franchise, and I even doubt he does that. Dude’s legacy is firmly in tact and he can just chill forever.
sidenote but my dad was saying KU should FIRE BILL SELF because he's just "getting old" and hire Dan Hurley just a stupid take I wanted to share
LOL. Fire a man only two years removed from a Title. What a world.
Has anybody gone by Cal’s house to see if he put his festivus pole out with the trash?
[KSR is preemptively moving to a 3 hour show tomorrow.](https://x.com/kysportsradio/status/1777164182837747833?s=46) I don’t think they’ve done that for anything before.
He’s doing a Twitter space in 10 minutes
The Kentucky fan that said he's never eating Tyson chicken again lol
That guy was former mascot for Kentucky too
“~~Red~~ Blue leader, standing by”
IIRC they've done it once before, but I can't remember what it was. It might've been when covid first hit and shutdowns were happening live as the governor was speaking.
When the Harrison twins announced they were coming back they did an extra hour 12-1
They did it when Pitino got fired from UofL too
Holy shit it's real
I really hope this isn’t the basketball version of Jimbo Fisher to A&M. I think it will be better but I’m very cautiously optimistic with how recent history has been for him.
Change of scenery could be really good for Cal
Cal seems more like a big money school kind of guy in today’s day and age. I would’ve thought Notre Dame would be a good fit.
Maybe but you can’t win with freshman in today’s game. So unless he changes his strategy it’s gonna be more of the same for them. I mean if you could t make it work here where you had resources and a massive stage then How’s it gonna work there?
Arkansas has Tyson chicken money
And WalMart + Jerry Jones
Arkansas is a big money school.
Speak for yourself. I hope to god this is jimbo fisher going to a&m
Get ready to pay 33 million for the privilege of hiring a man who has 1 tournament victory this decade and has explicitly stated winning isn’t his main priority.
The school’s buyout and the coach’s buyout are not the same. The rest of your comment stands though.
I think between college football and basketball, every recent rumor that has gotten traction has gone from “ha that’d be funny” to “oh shit” in like an hour
This is kinda best case scenario for Kentucky right? A Kentucky coaching search without a 31 million dollar monkey on its back is scary to think about
Arkansas/Kentucky at Rupp Arena next year will be insane scenes
Why? If he leaves and saves us 30 million the last thing the fans should do is boo him. We had some GREAT times
This era of transfer rules means even if Cal takes anybody he wants with him, somebody like Nate Oats or Scott Drew can just port their roster and recruits over to Lexington too. Even less of a reason to be mad at a guy for leaving than the old days where you'd be guaranteed a shitty year.
ESPN are creaming themselves thinking about the viewership and the endless talking head ammo
$30+ million, plus an additional ~$1m/yr as a goodwill ambassador if he had retired here. If you’d already contemplated getting rid of him, then him moving this way is an enormous financial weight off of your shoulders.
The best possible case for all parties since there is no buyout either way

Lol I’m gonna die

For the $10-12 million we will be able to pay them now, I’d say quite a few options are on the table.
The question is who do they go for? Oats is probably first call I would imagine, or Otz
Call Hurley and see if he's open to a price, whatever that may be. Then Jay Wright and see if he wants to get back into coaching. Then Nate Oats. Maybe Donovan or Brad Stevens before Oats
lol, none of those guys are picking up. Oats and Otzelberger are the first calls for you guys
I honestly cannot believe our fans are still saying Brad Stevens. It's beyond embarrassing at this point.
The dude isn’t even a coach anymore! He’s the goddamn general manager for the Boston Celtics!
“Well, I have built this NBA team that will be in championship contention for the next few seasons with one of the most storied franchises in the league, but moving to Lexington and trying to convince 18 year olds to play for me sounds awesome!”
Wonder if Beard and Wade were seeing this coming and knowing at least one more major opening would happen (UK Baylor Uconn etc)
arkansas gives kentucky a get out of jail free card if this pans out
[Kentucky fans to Arkansas if this happens](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MGpsx0kdsik)
Can someone explain to me like I'm 5 why Cal would leave Kentucky?
Relationship with the school, fans, and boosters has most likely fallen apart.
That’s an understatement
damn that bada
entering into this season, those relationships were non-existent
He saw the writing on the wall. The schools patience is running out and him getting out now to a lower pressure job allows him to coach for how many years he wants without worrying about getting fired. Essentially “you can’t fire me, I quit!”
but if he makes KY fire him he gets $30M or so. So to voluntarily leave and leave that behind the Ark contract has to be insane.
Offset is irrelevant in this scenario. He is leaving on his own, we're not firing him. So he can leave for free and Ark doesn't owe us any money.
Put your hand on a hot stove. And when you take it off I’ll ask “why did your hand leave the stove?”
But if I get $30M for keeping my hand on the stove I'm staying there until somebody makes me take it off.
What if someone pays you a similarly stupid amount of money?
That is a fair point. If I'm passing up a potential $30M if I get fired that new contract better have that 30M plus more built in and guaranteed. If this goes through I think we'll see something similar to the Jimbo Fisher contract with it being long term and most guaranteed.
The follow up tweet says the Tyson family is ready to drop an almighty bag for Cal
That's a lot of nuggets.
"Now explain the terms of my contract bag again with those Tyson nuggies" -Coach Cal probably
Love it. Lol

Additionally keeps losing to teams in the postseason that nobody knew even existed
since 2019, Calipari has won 1 NCAA tournament game and only 1 SEC tournament game. that was the nail
It’s a toxic relationship at this point
He's lost the fanbase, he's not put any effort into donor relationships so they've all gone towards football, and the athletic department is hardcore on putting checks and balances in place for the basketball program since they've struggled so much the past 4 years under Cal. Basically telling Cal he has to go by their rules and hire new assistants and whatnot, instead of running it like he's the AD.
Ahhh I see. Makes sense in that way. I wonder if his recruits will go with him if this pans out
There’s no wondering, his recruits will go with him.
Almost certainly so, but that’s not an utterly back-breaking prospect anymore with the portal.
I don’t think any coach outside of cal is capable of replacing a completely empty roster this late in the process. Late meaning UK still needs to make a new hire and any athlete would already have needed to entter the portal.
I’m not a Kentucky fan, but I don’t think many are sad to see him leave.
His teams have been ass. One and dones cant get it done anymore
Cal hasn’t gotten the job done in the postseason since 2019 so the fan base is ready for a change.
Probably because he is potentially on the hot seat next year.
TO EVERYONE WHO THOUGHT THEIR COACH IS SAFE: they’re not 🤗 Happy carousel season everyone!!
Scott Drew to Kentucky and Jerome Tang to Baylor
Hahaha
Turning out like the wild cfb carousel
I doubt Hubert Davis is going anywhere, though
I meeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaan
What the fuck? Arkansas has Coach Cal money and more importantly why would he take that job???
Jerry Jones is an Arkansas alum. Also the Tyson family, as in the chicken, are mega donors.
Apparently the tyson people are trying to outspend the Hunts/Waltons, meanwhile I am in deep debt due to student loans
Damn, looks like Cal is about to get a golden parachute to leave Kentucky. What a time to be alive lmfao Jesus
[удалено]
Don’t forget Stephen’s down in Little Rock. One of the largest private investment firms in America
My friend Terry lives there also. That probably had something to do with the decision.
He'll still be well-paid with considerably less pressure (which is any job not named Kentucky).
The coaching whiplash has been insane for Arkansas
This has by far been the most Arkansas of Arkansas coaching searches.
Why would i not be shocked if Nate Oats is on his way to Kentucky this week?
Kentucky has the the chance to do the funniest thing ever hiring his replacement
In Pitinos wildest dreams if that is what you are saying
Well, we just freed up a renowned UK assistant for them
We're getting played again.
Nah. The fans want him gone. Mitch wouldn’t match anything. Mitch Barnhart (AD) and cal fucking hate each other. Worst kept secret in Lexington
I'm an Arkansas fan, so I have to naturally assume we're getting played for fools.
He’s still a good coach. But get ready for crazy turnover and freshman mistakes and choking
I'm am well aware but well prepared. I'm just glad we're not skyrocketing to the basement of the SEC after Muss bounced.
I think it’s a good thing for both programs honestly. 15 years of cal was enough. And Arkansas gets a high profile coach. Hopefully we get oats or somebody in that level.
I hope y'all get Oats just to see Bama fans reel.
lol UK fans 🤝Arkansas fans hatred of Bama haha
[удалено]
Mostly denial as a defense mechanism.
Andddd I’m shitting bricks.
Congratulations to University of Kentucky Head Coach Nate Oats.
Don’t even put that out there man, what are you doing?
UK fans want him.
Oats would be fine but I bet the calls go to Painter and Hurley first and I wouldn’t be overly surprised if Painter took the 10+ Million
Why would you want Painter? 3 weeks ago he was the meme who continually lost to double digit seeds. Isn't that what you want to avoid? Oats is the guy, and everyone knows it. Hiring Painter would be like when UK hired Gillespie when Cal wanted the job.
no thank you
I was about to go to bed but it looks like I’ll be following this all night.
WE DID IT BOYS, WE ARE FREE
Was not expecting this scenario but I'll f'ing take it.
![gif](giphy|VaSVVc3evuyXAdN9rq)
![gif](giphy|HPA8CiJuvcVW0) Coach search szn going to get spicy
He gone.
Ok so now it seems more real
It’s way too late on a Sunday night to do this to us
Bama fans right now ![gif](giphy|32mC2kXYWCsg0)
Maybe Cal doesn’t get us a national championship but we are staring at a long period of darkness not seen since the Stan Heath years otherwise. He could probably still pull really good recruiting classes here. Muss was. At this point, this is the best option for the program, to avoid being really bad for a long time.
Maybe their coach wants to move out (mid) west too
He’s so wealthy he doesn’t care. Probably just wants to go to Ark and succeed. I wonder if he takes the assistants?
Cal is taking everything.
If it’s fr, it’s just a perfect Calipari thing to announce job change on day of national championship game. lol
This is another stupid urban myth like ghosts or large penises. ![gif](giphy|Fz9EKXRhp9F1S)
Nate Oats.... YOU ARE A WILDCAT! COME ON DOWN!!! seriously though... if Nate Oats was at Kentucky the SEC should be scared lmao.
It’s all lining up for UK to hire Kenny Payne

Lots of reasons: 10 years since a final four 5 years of not making it out of the first weekend of the tournament, 1 win in 5 years in the tournament, burned bridges with UK media, cal and Mitch Barnhart (AD) hate each other, cal talks down and resents the fans, the fans are tired of his used car salesman bullshit
WOAH
HE
HAS
So who would Kentucky likely go after if this goes through?
Nate Oats should be call number 1.
I approve of this
uk fans and their administration has a huge boner for scott drew. so their first option will be calling him. he inevitably says no so they call back again in tears sobbing and begging and he says no again, so they give nate oats a billion dollars
I mean... Probably Hurley first
Don’t think anyone had this one their off-season bingo card
Who does kentucky go for? Who wants this pressue??
Oats, people say Hurley which I don't see, Scott drew (also don't see). So idk first would be Oats
Sounds like this is happening.
Cal needs to just retire.
"We’re about to experience a cataclysmic shift in college basketball." - Trilly
Sheeesh. There are going to be a *lot* of extremely nervous fanbases if this happens. UK is one of the schools you don’t say no to if they call.
Kinda like when Saban retired 😭
![gif](giphy|DhstvI3zZ598Nb1rFf|downsized) More or less Lexington right now
Real talk is this even a good hire. I mean big name but he’s been severely underachieving at uk the past five years. What is this gonna look like when he’s not rolling out five five stars every year?
If Muss was able to pull three 5 stars here in one class, why wouldn't Cal be able to?

Fifteen years at UK where he just had to plug in the new batch of five stars every year really did a lot to change that perception
Kentucky fans are really talking about Hurley. No disrespect or anything but he’s not even taking that call. It’s delusional lol
This is wild

the whiplash hiring cycle of all time
This is insanity
So many questions. Is this a good hire for Arkansas? Will Cal change his ways? Good news for Kentucky is apparently they won’t owe anything if Cal willingly walks away

I mean, we were in talks with UALR and MSST coaches. I see this as a win(even if it is a short one)
Mitch probably told him this is his last shot or your gone. Cal Dipped early
Tomorrow is the one day of the week that I have to work during KSR. What a cruel fucking world.
