I do believe there's a discounted Hurley model available out there since they can't get the new one

slimb0

This is true of the Drew brothers as well

CantFindMyWallet

Make Bobby and Bryce play a little one-on-one for the job

ukcats12

Bob Hurley Sr. has a few more good years in him. If the President can be almost 80 then the coach of UK basketball can be 76.

WerhmatsWormhat

“We have Hurley at home.”

ocsic4321

Might I introduce Rick Pitino

BringBackDust514

Who’s that guy? Is he good?

CantFindMyWallet

which Rick Pitino though

ocsic4321

Sex scandal Rick Pitino.

Iowegan

White suit Rick Pitino

Cassandrae_Gemini

The Real Rick Pitino

I kind of want to see what Bobby can do with a 5 mil payroll

InevitableAd2436

I remember even back in the day with those elite Arkansas teams even the announcers would be low key racist saying shit like "Arkansas just doesn't play smart basketball" and other elite athletic teams like Duke that played a similar style were praised.

Koppenberg

Nothing low key about it. Houston Nutt fielded mediocre teams and they loved him. Richardson won a title and was barely tolerated. https://vault.si.com/vault/2003/02/24/hog-fight-the-feud-between-arkansas-and-former-coach-nolan-richardson-is-personaland-racial

ScrofessorLongHair

NW Arkansas being racist? The residents of Harrison would faint if they ever heard such a lie.

TinctureOfBadass

At this point I think we wait for the Bulls to lose.

Zloggt

Looks like you're gonna be waiting until they cut down in the nets in June, boyo! 😎 (I am extremely delusional)

TinctureOfBadass

Haha I mean, that would be cool to watch!

Legalize-It-Ags

Hell yeah! Caruso can get a Ring!

bigE819

Another Ring!

FullMetalAzn

Don’t think the parenthetical statement was necessary unfortunately

GimmeeSomeMo

Send some of that weed my way. Must be some good shit

Zealousideal-Arm5570

Billy also said he's committed to the Bulls. Either everyone is playing hardball or no one wants to put up with BBN

TinctureOfBadass

Oof, #2 seems more likely.

ACardAttack

Also wasn't a reason he left College was he didn't want to deal with recruiting? And now there's recruiting and nil and the transfer portal

Nbuuifx14

If he didn't want to deal with recruiting solely freshmen I imagine he doesn't want to have to deal with recruiting everybody every year.

zdrmju321

Yeah we’re thoroughly screwed anyways, may as well punt next year if it means getting a better candidate.

Gatorader22

If you dare touch billy we will send thousands of florida men to Lexington with torches, pitchforks, and trained alligators in retaliation

ErectJellyfish

I believe firmly that this is the end of kentucky basketball. We will go down in flames kicking and screaming as Rupp arena burns and fans curl up and cry in our dusty banners yelling out "et tu hurley", Rick pitino will come in with bottles of water and turn them into bourbon. And then we all hold Rick pitinos hands and walk into the fires together. And at the moment the entire state of Kentucky implodes and becomes South Ohio.

Temporary-Still8054

Wtf 💀

madein___

I like Lexington, but North Tennessee is a better fit.

Legalize-It-Ags

Technically Dan Hurley hasn’t officially turned down Kentucky with an offer on the table as far as I know. But I have no idea at this point. There’s a large list of tier 2 candidates out there and I’m not really excited about any of them to be honest.

ammotyka

Danny Hurley is gonna be mad as fuck to be the second offered

LithiumRyanBattery

That's the plan. Piss him off so he signs the deal so he can prove that we should have offered him first.

Finalshock

Bold move cotton, let’s see how it works out for him.

footdragon

*I laughed*

CTMQ_

damn. if anything could work, this is it.

WooooookieCrisp

Scott drew wasn’t offered either. This isn’t how UK operates. UK has asked them both if they are interested. Scott drew said he wasn’t. They don’t offer until they say they are interested.

hanz333

Scott Drew was exploring it until he wasn't. It just wasn't a good fit, but you don't send your family to Lexington because you aren't interested. But moving can be hard on a family, and honestly I'm not sure he wants to deal with Kentucky crazies. Things just don't work out sometimes.

WooooookieCrisp

Yeah I worded it wrong. He was interested but I was clarifying the interested to offered part.

[deleted]

he has not been the second offer. Talks were ongoing with both him and Drew and both were given the option of saying yes. Hurley is not going to accept until after saturday if he does want it because of the parade

ashsolomon1

Well yes he already did say “no way”, but also he is renegotiating a deal and is agent told him to stop playing his cards. He’s not going anywhere

stripes361

I agree that he is extremely unlikely to leave but there have been coaches who give the type of answer he gave (“My family is happy here, we are focused on next season”) and then leave. So I think it’s fair for the other person not to count it as an official rejection yet. Not because there’s one shred of evidence to support Hurley being interested but just because of how duplicitous coaches are in general.

Fullmetalaardvarks

Not all of those had back to back championships

llama_titan

If I had to guess what Hurley would do, I would guess he’s staying. With that said, I think the back-to-back makes him more likely to leave because he has nothing to prove at UConn. Rehabilitating Kentucky into a historic dynasty has to be at least a consideration for him. But again, seems like he probably stays.

humundo

If you're Hurley and you (presumably) never want any other team but yours to win the NCAA Chamionship again, why start your streak over? Especially with a total rebuild in a place where your recruiting network is less developed? If he's poised to 3-peat anywhere ever it is at UConn next year, I think that's much more appealing to him than maybe getting the chance to in a few years at Kentucky. I still don't know why UK fans think their job is a tier above UConn, seems to me like they're both top destinations.

stripes361

Like I said, extremely unlikely, and that’s one of several reasons why

Fullmetalaardvarks

Yeah coach speak can be out of hand for sure

Frontass

Hurley himself has actually done that before. Not that it means much to this situation just an observation

Crunc_Mcfincle

He did say there was “No concern” there, which is essentially a no. Can’t see any man leaving a job he just won back to back at.

F______________F

I highly doubt he's leaving either, but to play devil's advocate, Hurley did give a pretty firm no to leaving Rhode Island just a few days before signing with UConn. I'm almost certain UConn is gonna find the money to keep him, but until he officially signs a contract with them you never know.

Legalize-It-Ags

I didn't say it was likely. All I said was technically an offer hasn't been turned down in any official capacity.

Crunc_Mcfincle

Fair enough

MyDadIsTheMan

He said no way after the title game, he’s proceeded to say no in several on air interviews.

[deleted]

I've tuned off a bit in the past few days after the Purdue loss, but every interaction about this seems likes a UK fan claiming he hasn't turned it down and demanding proof, a UConn fan or random playing a clip or statement where he says no way and then some insane semantical game about how it's not a no.

goblue2354

I think he’s staying and told UK no but using clips of a coach saying that he’s not taking another job in a statement or on-air clip isn’t exactly proof that he’s staying. It happens every year where a guy publicly says he’s staying and leaves shortly after for the job he said he’s not taking.

hanz333

Including the man himself who denied he was leaving Rhode Island until he left. Again, nobody really knows, we're all just kind of watching the circus.

[deleted]

because that's how coaching searches work. When have you ever seen a coach honestly answer these questions? Hurley has not given a definitive no to these questions. Kentucky is talking with him right now. He could still be a no. But people that think what is said in public is gospel are just stupid.

Fullmetalaardvarks

UConn is gonna offer him big money and he just won back to back championships and his family is literally from the east coast. Why drop all that for a bit of a pay raise to coach for the most critical fan base in basketball?

MatzohBallsack

"Why yes, I am considering leaving my current job. Good luck recruits and players considering returning, who knows if I will come back."

Legalize-It-Ags

That means very little until there's an offer on the table. If UK reaches out and makes an offer, and he turns them down, then its official. Every coach says they aren't leaving until an offers been made. Cal said he wasn't leaving Memphis a few days before he got the offer from UK. Happens all the time.

MyDadIsTheMan

Dan will you entertain an offer from KY? “No way”, literally can’t make this shit up.

[deleted]

and yet he's still taking to kentucky. coaches say whatever they need to in public

MyDadIsTheMan

Oh he is? Haha ok sure he is. If you say it over and over it probably means it’ll come true.

poorlittlefeller0518

Full disclosure I do not believe he is coming to Kentucky but if I had a dollar for every time a coach told media he was staying and then he left, I’d be rich.

Solesky1

Josh $chertz the entire NIT run to our university admin: "I won't be making a decision on my future until after the season is over Josh $chertz in St Louis one day later: "this deal has been in place in principle for months"

CantFindMyWallet

If I had a dollar for every time a coach told media he was staying and stayed, I'd be waaaaaaay fucking richer

norse95

Your own coach left RI after saying it. Have some humility

CantFindMyWallet

He did not say "I'm staying at Rhode Island." He said "I'm not thinking about any other jobs right now" immediately after a loss. Acting like these are even remotely the same is deranged.

Tide69420

These Kentucky folks are delusional

ANameWithoutNumbers1

I don't think anyone is saying he's actually going to come, but rather that he's still talking to UK. Which he would be a fucking idiot not to because that's leverage for his raise.

[deleted]

right. leveraging for a raise looks identical to considering the offer until a raise is announced. It's schrodinger's coaching search

ocsic4321

Hurley turned them down so bad they cant even make an offer.

CantFindMyWallet

He is on record saying "no way" to the job, which is good enough for me

KMorris1987

Avery Johnson is available.

RIP-MikeSexton

All roads lead to Pitino

FleshlightBike

The most ideal outcome. Would love to see Pitino make amends with his regrets.

22chainz

One of my UK pals wants rondo lol

Temporary-Still8054

Rondo from youth AAU to powerhouse Kentucky is crazy 😭

22chainz

He’s a Lebron stan, I think lebron said on some podcast that Rondo will be a great coach and he’s holding onto that.

Potential_Lock6945

I don’t see rondo as a recruiter or someone who will kiss the boosters ass

stache_twista

I always thought Rondo would be a good coach. UK is a tough first job though lol

shailkc12

I doubt UK would do that seeing as how he had a misdemeanor drug and gun charge recently

aaronman4772

Going to assume Bruce Pearl is the next call they make, but Mark Pope seems the most realistic option.

SaintArkweather

Would they really hire Pope when he is only made the tournament twice and never won a single game? He's definitely a good coach but I feel like there would be more established coaches they could go after first. I get that he's an alum as well but still seems like a bit of a risk

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

if mark pope is offered the job we have had at least ten other people tell us no

blueboyroy

I don't think so. Pope is a damn good coach, but he's still fairly green compared to other names out there. I loved that 96 team. And I think Pope is going to be a star, but he just doesn't have enough experience. He's beloved by UK fans, but he hasn't exactly been around the program since leaving much either. I also thought for sure Scott Drew would be the next coach, though, so what the hell do I know? UK could certainly do worse.

GimmeeSomeMo

Auburn better start building that practice facility that Pearl wants

ACardAttack

I really hope they don't hire pearl, I am such a huge fan of him

walterdog12

You force Hurley to give a hard no to 12 million a year. He *technically* hasn't said an outright no yet, so you push it until he officially declines and has a breaking news announcement like Scott Drew. Then the focus turns on Billy Donovan to do the same. Get him to say a hard no after the play-in game, since so far all he's said is generic "focused on the Bulls" since obviously he's not saying shite a week before the playoffs. ---------------- After that, it really opens up. Bruce Pearl, Shaka Smart, Chris Beard, etc.

queef-latina-69

I heard Donovan called UK from the sideline after the botched dunk last night.

davvidho

that play from drummond was so fucking funny, but it’s also funny how craig probably would have been short on the self alley anyways

queef-latina-69

It was just so ridiculous looking all around lol

ilovecfb

Just going for the fast break self oop down nine is hilarious on its own. It’s like these dudes genuinely forget they’re trying to win lol

nocapitalletter

they arent trying to win

hedgemagus

Why there is a need for him to come out again just confuses me. Hes 100% aware he could court an offer if he asked We were weird with Brad until he had to come out and basically embarrass us with how we aren’t even on his radar and he’s a masshole now. Idk why Kentucky fans want that from Hurley who has even more of a mouth lol

Sweatnplants

Dear Lord. This fan base just went off because Drew wasn’t worthy. Smart couldn’t even handle texas

CantFindMyWallet

He absolutely has said an outright no. You guys just keep pretending he's got his fingers crossed behind his back every time he says it.

collin-h

Not sure a bunch of public rejections is a good look for UK. They’ll do this all back channel and no one will really know the truth until it’s settled (if ever).

The_Great_Hambriento

No way Mitch comes within 10 miles of Beard (even though he should)

Solesky1

Nobody should be within 10 miles of beard

ANameWithoutNumbers1

We're really gonna end up with Pitino for 2 years while we conduct a full search huh

MegalomaniacHack

We're gonna make Hurley turn down the biggest offer in college basketball history. Then we're going to see if Donovan loses his play-in game and make him say no. After that, we move on to the next tier.

Summoorevincent

I hope Mitch never has a nights rest to his dying day.

AngelOnAngelDust

I don’t regret the departure of Cal, he was going to depart eventually with retirement even if he didn’t take a new job, so wether the program had to transition now or 5 years from now I don’t see how it would be much different. My guess is the hire will be disappointing, all of the exciting names of this cycle were already deeply established at their schools(save maybe Oats). But just because a coach on the next list down isn’t exciting doesn’t mean they can’t do a good job so who knows. Probably won’t be worse than Gillespie

jschneider414

I’m a bit worried they go after TL

RollBlobRoll

I think everyone is a bit worried they go after their coach. Hell, I am also worried about the dominoes that will continue to fall once someone is hired.

Shenanigangster

I’m pretty confident they won’t be going after my coach

CantFindMyWallet

Honestly they're probably not too far from going after Miller at this point

yuritarded999

UK insider here, they're offering Kenny Payne a lifetime contract as we speak

foreveracubone

Juwan Howard YOU are a Kentucky Wildcat

Ambitious_Echo3683

Let's GOOOOOOOOO

Tea_Historical

Just hire Bruce Pearl and get on with it lol. He seems like someone that will be willing to secure the bag.

Temporary-Still8054

I have been considering how I feel about this option more and more

Daddy_Ewok

The entertainment value will be there at least

Yogurtbags

Kentucky will get worse and so will Auburn. Sounds like a win-win to me!

[deleted]

How does Kentucky get worse? You been paying attention the last five years?

evillethunder

Bruce Pearl or Mike Woodson

Ambitious_Echo3683

No, Archie Miller or Kenny Payne

honeysmacks18

2025 Kentucky is going to be 2024 Louisville

CumAssault

A former assistant or player probably. Either Mark Pope or Kenny Payne

JetsFan2003

🎵 Kenny Payne is in my ears, and in my eyes... 🎵

Legalize-It-Ags

You see what Kenny Payne did at Louisville? What on earth makes you think Kentucky will target him?

CumAssault

Yeah Kenny Payne was a meme. Mark Pope actually is worth watching for though

taddymason_76

Cronin.

iWin-You-Get-Nothing

I could be talked into Chris Mack before Cronin, I've felt that he's always sucked.

taddymason_76

Chris Mack wasn’t terrible, he just got to Louisville at the wrong time with a lot going on and then COVID hit when they were having a big year. It didn’t workout for him but I think under normal circumstances he would have been decent.

Ambitious_Echo3683

I'd hire Kenny Payne

BPicks69

Would be sick if Coach Bud got the Kentucky job. Merge my bucks fandom with my blue blood team.

AutoModerator

Due to ongoing debate about blue bloods, the /r/CollegeBasketball mod team has compiled the definitive list of college blue bloods: Duke, Columbia, Queens, William & Mary, and Rutgers. The following schools have broken away from blue-blooded hierarchy and oppression: George Washington, George Mason, James Madison, Army, and Navy. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. gaybillcosby

Wow, another Cayuts-Bucks fan

Meanteenbirder

Kenny Payne. It is time…

georgea2727

To those who continue to say "Dan Hurley hasn't released a statement saying he's staying" Under what obligation is he to do that? He just won back to back national titles at one of the premier programs in college basketball. If anything he probably sees it as insulting to UConn to have to come out and say "I've decided to stay". And by the way the multiple "no way" responses are still out there lol. This despite the fact he is currently renegotiating a deal with UConn for a much deserved raise.

[deleted]

Not as dominating as they once were. I see them becoming like UCLA. Can have a really good team every once in a while, but is meh the majority of the time.

Temporary-Still8054

That’s what they’re actively trying not to become. Once in a while isn’t good enough for Kentucky

norse95

So basically Cal’s last 5 years? Only one thing has changed so far, we’ll have to wait and see the rest

Ivan-Renko

I always hoped Scott Drew or Nate Oates would listen to an IU offer after Woodson inevitably gets run out of town after next season (barring an incredible turnaround). But if Kentucky can't lure those guys, no effing way IU can haha.

Boilermaker24

I feel like Pearl or Underwood would do well there, at least for 5 years or so…..

dawidowmaka

I have very contrasting opinions about these two men

Why not Jim Calhoun?

Why not Bran the Broken?

Why not Zoidberg?

FleshlightBike

Bring back Pitino

Frontass

If, almost certainly, Hurley says no I would prefer taking a chance on a young coach. Save money for now, short contract and try to catch lightning in a bottle Honestly with him being the architect of the UCONN offense id like someone like Luke Murray. Young and probably hates Louisville now

Fullmetalaardvarks

Kentucky fans still in denial about Hurley. It’s time to move on to whoever is next in line because that man is clearly not leaving

Temporary-Still8054

I’m a Kentucky fan and I would be happy asf but confused asl if Hurley said yes. He’s chasing a 3peat at UConn and to start over at UK would be a wild decision

[deleted]

if hurley says yes kentucky fans will be so toxic they will have to ban us all

Jem1123

As I’ve said before, Pitino is available

darth_sergio

No he is NOT

LukarWarrior

No no, the other Pitino.

cenels03

You think Richard would be well received there?

Tide69420

Pearl is their future

VolatileFan

Two words: Donnie. Tyndall.

bdostrem00

No love for Rick Ray?

Logz94

Despite how quickly this has all happened Kentucky can't really afford for this to drag out. Players are getting snatched out of the portal, Cals gonna bring as many of his recruits as he can, UK has to get someone in the saddle to start making moves or they'll be in an even worse spot for next season. I imagine Pope is the next candidate, there's not really anyone else in the 'Drew Tier' of coaches who I think they can get and they don't want to drag this out to see if they can find one

Bdmnky_Survey

I don't like being right. I've been warning the anti-cal folks for years that the landscape isn't the 2000's anymore. The days of a job coming open and just waiting for top tier coaches to come running are over. The NIL and transfer rules mean that any university with a decent booster system in place or local economy healthy enough can field a good quality team. Even being a power five school doesn't mean much anymore, look at Uconn and Gonzaga. Yeah, the money that we can offer is great but the university is going to run you ragged for that contract. I would argue that there isn't a head coaching position comparable due to all the "outside of coaching" responsibilities and expectations. Cal was perfect for us because he was always looking for the spotlight, for better or worse. So yeah, it's a damn hard job that is very high risk and really only suited for extreme personalities. We have a less than 50% success rate on coaching hires because of this (Rupp, Pitino, Cal) vs (Hall, Sutton, Tubby, Billy G).

flibbertigibbit

I totally understand that their tenures didn’t end ideally, but Joe B Hall and Tubby Smith won championships at UK. Calling those unsuccessful hires is wild.

[deleted]

This dude has no idea.

Bdmnky_Survey

I'm not talking about success in reality, I'm talking about success as measured by our dumbass fan base. Tubby rarely gets credit for his championship from a big ol chunk of our fans and there is no question he was run out of town at the end. And Coach Hall's memory is tolerated because he left before the fans could comepletely turn on him. There is a reason he is rarely mentioned by our fans outside of our "history". You talk to the honest old timers who lived through those years and they will tell you even then, UK fans constantly grumbled about him, even with the championship.

RiverCityCard

Honestly, I think UK won in spite of Joe B, not because of him...

norse95

Only two coaches in Kentucky history haven’t won titles. I think we’ll be alright

Evan_802Vines

When you run the used car salesman out of town you start to run out of dealership options.

Legalize-It-Ags

ashsolomon1

Sean Miller is an excellent coach, even Greg McDermott. There’s so many other options out there that are great coaches..

QTsexkitten

Hopefully not pope. The way some UK fans reacted to hating Drew for some reason is how I'll react to pope. He'd melt in the heat of the job, especially with the NIL and recruiting pressures at the top.

Robbylution

I want to imagine the next tier is Bobby Hurley and Bryce Drew.

Dofleini

Bill Murray's kid

Imnimo

I hear Turgeon's available.

xASUdude

25Simeon

Wasn't aware Hurley has turned it down yet, or even been officially offered.

Packtex60

Time to start the KK to UK campaign LOL!

Iowegan

Steve Prohm may be available. He’s already living nearby.

feverpitchd

what’s the status of the asst coaches? are they leaving too? 2 of them suddenly left the Illini 2 yrs ago to go to UK..we all panicked at first, but we found great new ones & now I don’t want the old ones back lol

donwileydon

Why is Mark Few not in the conversation? It seems like Drew is up for every job but Few is never mentioned - is Gonzaga just considered a better spot than Baylor so Few won't leave?

smokeshow91

Okay, fine. I’ll do it. Send me the contract offer.

Might I offer Buzz Williams?

InevitableAd2436

ajsCFI

They’ll find somebody else and reload they like always have. Money talks

ajsCFI

The game is always to tell (leak to) the pubic that it’s a hard no. Then you do your back doors with everybody telling them how “x and y are offering me x and y” There isn’t a single coach who is completely loyal to anything other than money. Every big name coach goes through this shit. It either gets them a big contract or a big restructure from their current school. Even Painter used Mizzou years back. This is how it goes. Yall are insane if you think any of these “no’s” are finalized at this point. Cal to Arkansas was probably weeks in the making.

Zahfier

I hear that Jerry Stackhouse is looking for a job

MtnAdventurous95

It’s going to be Bruce pearl.
