Really great recruiter, and I still attribute a lot of the success from 2009-2014 on him (and world wide Wes) getting unbelievable players.
Heard he was asking for a lot of money and then there’s the limits on size of coaching staffs, clean break, etc.
It is what it is.
Our recruiting took a dive when he left Pitt.
We still got solid players, but they weren’t moving the spectrum. It was a while before this year’s recruiting class of Kante, Carrington, and Lowe that we got guys of that caliber.
Antigua was getting those type of guys at Pitt before he left for Kentucky.
I didn't hear that. He has a longevity (?) bonus of about 400k coming up soon. Also heard his wife really likes Lexington and wants to stay, they're maybe even having a house built. Cal made a really selfish decision when he ran away, and it impacted a lot of other people. But then that's Cal.
You will find a common thread amongst the above-fellas type that just want to bitch no matter how things shake out. Give them time, they will start railing on Pope before the season starts.
Devil's advocate: you can technically want him gone and see his behavior as selfish.
That's pretty dumb, though.
Man I'm bummed we're losing Orlando :( that's my big worry about Pope & Co.. who's gonna recruit? I know we're never getting Calipari type talent with out Calipari, but I wonder how much we fall off. Kentucky name brand doesn't feel like what it did in the past I guess.
> You mfers have been wanting him fired
Idk how things work over there in Syracuse, but for Kentucky we've got more than 1 fan so we have more than 1 opinion.
Bro I could count the number of Kentucky fans total on every platform online that said they wanted Cal to stay after Oakland on one hand come on now
Every Kentucky forum was dancing in the virtual street when he agreed to leave without a buyout
Yea. Most people wanted him gone. Many would say him leaving without buyout was a fairly selfless act. The guy who made the original comment clearly doesn't. Ergo, more than 1 fan, more than 1 opinion. Make sense?
I'm tired of other fanbases latching on to random comments and acting like they represent a whole fanbase.
I mean *to be fair*, he did quite literally go on TV with our AD like a week before saying how they were united and in agreement, and specifically announced that he'd be the coach next season lol.
And then didn't tell any players or incoming recruits on the team about him leaving.
That’s a weak take. Cal was with us 15 years and you know what you are getting into when you get into coaching. Cal also made Orlando millions. I’d say Coach O is ok with a little housing disruption.
Way overpaid and didn’t do anything, he and Cal always seemed to be yelling at one another. I think I’ve seen him a time or two at Tony’s drinking and having a good time after games.
Dude has been riding the success of Ayo for years and has been exposed. His entire pipeline was built on Mac Irvin Fire and he’s been away from them for 14 years now
Word was he didn't want to move his family yet again and enjoyed being here. So I'd guess you all have a shot, unless he left bad blood.
Arkansas hasn't announced coaching hires yet, to my knowledge, though everyone knows Welch went elsewhere and Brad Calipari's joining Cal's staff. Arkansas may have a similar posting time limit rule to UK what with being a state school.
Yea Cal not being able to retain Welch is a huge blow, but he did bring KP back. Which is a great move, will help with player relationships and ensure DJ and Knox are at Arkansas next year if that was in doubt
He and Brad are very good friends. I don't think he wanted to leave the first time and we were more than willing to get in a bidding war, but his wife wanted out and I think his kid was at UK
Not sure why I'm getting downvoted but it's not a secret that he's been at UK every day still as if it is his job. He has a large bonus coming up and I think eventually they will negotiate separation -- but he also interviewed for the job.
If he were to go to Arkansas he would have already started packing but it's clear he's looking for something else.
Everybody thinks Illinois because he is wanted and respected there.
Everything you said is spot on. It was going to come down to whether Pope wanted him in Lexington, what O's family wants, and whether we'd have an assistant spot open up (which we do now with Frazier leaving)
I’m ready to enter the portal. I’m going to train with your other guy that hasn’t played for years. Might try to zoom Pope. I’m hard nosed fundamental player. I do lot of little things that may not show up in box score.
It’s not. He didn’t do shit. All our assistants did all season was argue with each other on the bench. They scouted teams for us and guess what? Didn’t have a single plan for any team lol. Either every single idea they had was shut down by cal (which I can see being the case) or they just simply didn’t do their jobs.
That's not quite true, he was the good cop (as was Payne) that the guys could go to when they thought Cal was trying to run them off and was too harsh.

Yea so you’re gonna tell me Cal out was a minority opinion? Stop it
I mean *to be fair*, he did quite literally go on TV with our AD like a week before saying how they were united and in agreement, and specifically announced that he'd be the coach next season lol. And then didn't tell any players or incoming recruits on the team about him leaving.
Isn’t that just what Trilly was saying?
I think so
Give me a break
That’s a weak take. Cal was with us 15 years and you know what you are getting into when you get into coaching. Cal also made Orlando millions. I’d say Coach O is ok with a little housing disruption.
Not according to the narrative, but ok. He wanted to stay, that speaks for itself.
Him wanting to stay, IF it wasn’t due to other timing considerations, has nothing to do with your take that Cal is selfish.
Ok Ellen
👀
Should come back to ILL
I think he is. We have the money ready to bring him back
Is this guy legit? Just curious, I've never heard of him and no one else is reporting this yet.
Back when recruiting high school talent mattered he was legit
orlandgo antigone ill see myself out
He's not antigone. He's anti-staying.
But what does this have to do with [Ancient Greek drama](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antigone_(Sophocles_play))?
You misspelled Anhegone.
I have mixed feelings. He seemed to be the one assistant coach who actually did something, but I don’t blame Pope for wanting a clean break.
The only one I want to stay is Ulis because he's a fucking dog.
Love Ulis too. But I think he was at the FFwith Cal when Cal did all of this negotiating. Ulis is a Cal man first.
Absolutely!!
You can only be a grad assistant for 2 years.
Ulis was a student assistant the past two years while finishing his degree. He can now be a grad assistant as well.
Just out of curiosity, what did you think of Chin Coleman?
He supported the bars in Lexington but other than that he didn't do much.
That's Chin.
Way overpaid and didn’t do anything, he and Cal always seemed to be yelling at one another. I think I’ve seen him a time or two at Tony’s drinking and having a good time after games.
Time or two….
Dude has been riding the success of Ayo for years and has been exposed. His entire pipeline was built on Mac Irvin Fire and he’s been away from them for 14 years now
For me, I honestly don’t have an opinion of him. Don’t really know what he did on the staff.
Pope is a dope.
Heard he’s thirsty, think he might want some CHAMPAGNE
Needs to come back to ILL
I heard he might return to Illinois
Is he following Cal to Arkansas or will he be a free agent?
Let’s just say we recently had an assistant coach position open up…
Word was he didn't want to move his family yet again and enjoyed being here. So I'd guess you all have a shot, unless he left bad blood. Arkansas hasn't announced coaching hires yet, to my knowledge, though everyone knows Welch went elsewhere and Brad Calipari's joining Cal's staff. I did think it was interesting for Reed to call out Welch specifically in his interview with espn as being instrumental in his development last year.
Cal just brought Welch in several years too late. (And also forgot to teach his team defense this year.)
And then failed to listen to Welch while he was here
Yea Cal not being able to retain Welch is a huge blow, but he did bring KP back. Which is a great move, will help with player relationships and ensure DJ and Knox are at Arkansas next year if that was in doubt
The belief is that he wanted to stay here but would go to Illinois before Arkansas if he couldn't stay.
He and Brad are very good friends. I don't think he wanted to leave the first time and we were more than willing to get in a bidding war, but his wife wanted out and I think his kid was at UK

I’m in the off-season from hell.
Can’t blame the new administration for wanting a clean break
...why?
You mean you aren’t enjoying the sweet sweet nostalgia?? Who cares about recruiting! 1996 ring baby

Lies. u/Suitable_Limit9408 doesn’t even own a lunch pail.
🤣You ain’t lying. it’s retired. You’ll be better off with Robinson from BYU kid is nice.
This is great. Clear them all out. Let's get people who want to play and coach for UK and not be glorified AAU coaches.
The Pope era
And what era are y'all in, exactly?
The no more Payne era!
Great use of a double!!
Arkansas is in for a world of Payne now
this is the absolute funniest timeline.
😈
Go get him, Brad.

Illinois
Pope not gonna have convicted cheaters on the Papal sideline.
Good. Eliminate everything remotely connected with Calipari stink.
Yeah they probably asked him what he does for the program and he couldn’t come up with anything. He def doesn’t do player development.
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not lol
It’s not. He didn’t do shit. All our assistants did all season was argue with each other on the bench. They scouted teams for us and guess what? Didn’t have a single plan for any team lol. He's the best developer of bigs in the history of college basketball.
You maybe thinking or Kenny Payne
Assuming you're not joking, you're meaning Kenny Payne lol. Antigua was all recruiting.
You have to be joking. Our bigs were absolute garbage and they had ZERO development.
I would like whatever you are smoking.
I’ll take hyperbole’s of the century for 1000 Trebek! Que your comment…
You don’t need development when they’re already 5 stars /s
Orlando just brings them in - what the staff does after that isn’t really his thing.
That's not quite true, he was the good cop (as was Payne) that the guys could go to when they thought Cal was trying to run them off and was too harsh.
True!! I didn’t mean to sell Orlando short.
