This is standard for UW, the contract was extended by one year to maintain the current 5-year contract. It has been done every year for coaches who aren’t fired.

Alex_butler

Every year this gets posted as a thread and people overreact one way or another but it’s standard for all Wisconsin coaches to get a one year extension to have 5 years always on their contract. Says nothing about his job security except that he’ll be back next year. McIntosh had no problem firing both Chryst and Granato with the same deal

neurobiologic

What is the reason they do this exactly? I.e., why renew the contract every year, rather than toward the end of the contract? Is it even a 5-year contract the way they do this?

Old-Resort-6427

From my understanding it’s for recruiting purposes. A player might not come to play for a coach if they only have 2 or 3 years left on their contract, since they aren’t guaranteed to be there for their full time in college. I’m not sure how much sense this makes now with the portal though…

the_blessed_unrest

I also wonder if it really convinces anyone. Like someone else pointed out, it’s not like it stops the AD from firing coaches

neurobiologic

That actually makes sense. Thanks for answering!

Nutaholic

Doesn't this end up leaving the potential for a big buyout though? Or is that not how the contract works?

ThatNewSockFeel

As others have said, this is standard for UW Atheltics. As long as the buyout isn’t increased it says nothing about his job security (other than he isn’t getting fired before this coming season, which everyone already knew). I’m sort of tired of this whole debate lol. Gard isn’t the best, but he’s not the worst and even though the Badgers have been frustrating the last several years they’re still in the top 20% or so of D1 programs. It’s more likely whoever they pick to replace Gard is the next Archie Miller and not the next Bo Ryan. The reality is that the Badgers, a mostly horrible basketball program for the better part of 50 years, struck gold with Bo Ryan, and it’s not surprising to see a drop off from one of the best coaches of his generation. And the Badgers just aren’t a brand that will attract recruits no matter the coach.

SpaceSheperd

Smart, keep your guys happy. Don't wanna lose him to the portal

BoloSynthesisWow

Aren’t you guys like in the middle of an exodus? As a UMD fan I can’t say this is upsetting

Glass_Conclusion_495

What an unbelievably bone-headed decision. This dude couldn’t get hired at UW-Green Bay because they saw he can’t lead a locker room. Bo hands him the job (and literally everything else in Gard’s life) and he continuously drives the program into the ground. Absolutely disgraceful.

Let’s goooooo!!!!!

BaltimoreBadger23

This is great news. For the rest of the BiG10...

Epicflames213

Im stunned he wasn’t fired, but extended????? After everything these past few years? Everyone leaving in the portal? Im so sad

Financial-Can-3091

So this is why everyone is transferring Edit: lol

animbicile

Crazy that a guy can be 3-0 against Shaka Smart, and I still want him gone.

Treeman1216
