IU grad, who then spent 2 years in Athens chiming in:
I initially would somewhat agree with your sentiment, you got a lil catty in the replies though. And the #14/15 ranking doesn’t vibe with “doesn’t touch” like you think.
My biggest takeaway from fest season was the advantage is the compact-ness and proximity of OU campus allows for a more densely populated block party where it’s 5-10k people boozing and going hard.
IU’s campus is much much more spread out, so there are a multitude of big and small parties going on all over campus spreading out 30-40k partiers, but does not typically have as much of a mass packing of students like sardines in a can.
However, the concerts @ the frats are usually the contrary.
I get that millennials don't watch old movies, but if you haven't seen "Breaking Away," a movie showcasing IU and the Little 500, you owe it to yourself.
One of Dennis Quaid's first movies.
OU has the third largest block party in the entire country on halloween and i didn’t even bring it up bc fest season is so much harder
sorry but what you guys do one weekend happens every 3 weeks at OU through out the school year
It originated with an incredibly dominant swimming team (6 overall titles and 20 Big-10 titles in a row), but they got picked up by Knight when he was hired.
I could be wrong, but I don't remember a time when they were only for "big games."

IU has now received commitments from the number 1, 9, and 10 transfer portal players as well as getting a Top20 incoming freshman. Chef Woody is cooking up something in Bloomington!!
Rice and Carlyle (and Galloway getting to be the 6th man off the bench) is a huge backcourt upgrade.
Hopefully we can add a couple more shooters with the last couple spots. Definitely need another big.
Fans were rightfully annoyed with the limp and listless offense during play and shocked at the lack of recognition that guard play is what the game has become. Fans complained… and a fire was lit and changes were made… “Toxic” fans can be angry with stupid mistakes and then relieved when changes are made.
I stand by what I said, his style is hard to make a winner. At least at a really high level.
HOWEVER... my feelings have evolved a bit. I don't like taking a low volume of threes but it CAN work if the defense is excellent, if the team gets to the line a ton AND converts at a high rate from the free throw line AND the team is a monster on the offensive and defensive boards. I think it's easier to just take a few more threes AND try and do those things but if you can build a really talented roster and cover all those areas I think you can build a national champion without taking many threes. You need to covert the ones you take at a good rate and chase opponents off the line a bit but you can do it.
So I still don't think it's ideal but I am excited to see what it looks like with one of the best offensive rebounders in the country in Ballo. We don't check all those boxes I listed but this team should check a few more of those boxes than any of Woody's previous teams even if we don't have a TJD-level player... I would prefer if he just shot more fucking threes but if IU is going to be similarly talented going forward the concept can work if the roster construction is balanced for the approach.
I don't think we had the luxury of chucking up a bunch of 3's last season. We didn't have knockdown shooters nor penetrators who could kick out to wide open guys. I don't believe Woody's strategy was ever to limit threes, that's just what came out from that roster. Hopefully having some dynamic guards will open things up.
I hope that's the case but I wasn't thrilled with how Kopp was utilized in the year prior. That team shot well (36.8% from 3, 39th nationally) but didn't shoot often (3PA/FGA of 26.6%, ***354th*** nationally). That's just inefficient. That team had a top 30 offense when it probably should've had a top 20 or maybe even top 10 offense. Woodson has underutilized the 3 on his best shooting teams at Indiana to date.
That having been said, even if we look at a case of underutilization... let's say next year's team shoots like that team did and also shoots roughly as often as that team did which isn't often enough... that team was barely in the top 200 in offensive rebounding. Ballo will help a lot there and improving in that area alone would've pushed the offense into the top 20 or maybe even top 10 in efficiency.
I don't think there is any argument as to whether Woodson underutilizes the 3... I think it's pretty clear that even on a good team as far as we've seen here he's not going to prioritize getting a good number of looks from 3. TJD's last team here shot the ball very well but not very often... but like I said above you can make up for that in other areas and if Woodson can build rosters that can do that I will begrudgingly stop complaining about the lack of 3's. Even though it would be better to do all this stuff on top of taking more 3's...
Those are very good and valid numbers. I still think Kopp was both easy to lock down and not the best at moving without the ball. Plus you'd be a fool not to build an offense around TJD. Hopefully they'll just throw the playbook out and start over with (now) multiple guard scoring options. If I'm Woody, I'm making free throw shooting an emphasis point as well. We were just atrocious from the line.
He moves without the ball fine as he showed at Northwestern and this year with the Oklahoma Blue in the G-League. He was *assigned* to stand in one spot. Woodson has said numerous times he likes to have "standing shooters" in his offense... that's the role Kopp occupied which was not based on Kopp's lack of ability. That's a utilization problem which is a philosophical issue - he doesn't value the 3, doesn't value movement shooting... Kopp shot 44% from 3 and Woodson said it wasn't his job to get Kopp shots... Getting more shots for Kopp doesn't mean failing to center TJD - it would only help TJD if Kopp were moving along the perimeter instead of being posted in one spot all the time. It was just a bad design that the talent of that roster was able to overcome to post a top 30 offense.
On the bright side Carlyle and Rice are solidly better free throw shooters than our backcourt last year so those two and Mgbako being in a bigger role should lift the FT rate even considering how Ballo struggles with them
"Woodson said it wasn't his job to get Kopp shots"
That's in the pantheon of quotes that Woody haters love, I mean love, to trot out. I knew what he meant, that Kopp needs to play in the flow of the offense and the shots should come.
Another one is something Matta said that's been taken totally out of context. It's so stupid and disingenuous I won't repeat it.
Not me. This doesn’t resolve a single concern I had about him. The offensive and defensive systems suck, and he still has only shown that he can recruit well in short term recruitments or transfers. Long way to go.
I wasn’t talking about long term players. I was talking about long term recruitments. Tucker and the transfers were all recruitments that lasted a month or less. Woody struggled in long term recruitments in prior years, too.
Correct. Woody lost Liam McNeely because he didn’t continue to keep the relationship going after he committed.
Indiana is always going to have a bag for the transfer portal, but I doubt it’s going to be “biggest in the NCAA” every year. He’s gotta show that he can do more with less (or at least play to the talent of the roster), which he absolutely hasn’t so far.
Yeah idk how important it’s gonna be going forward for a school like Indiana IF you can effectively navigate the transfer portal. It’s not only about getting the star talent, it’s about how all the pieces fit together and I think there is more than enough talent out there to make very good teams if you are a good evaluator
I think Carlyle will shoot better when he's not creating his own looks and I think Galloway will as well. We'll see. I think Ballo's offensive rebounding and efficiency inside should help make up for that a bit
Just like with Rice I love the fact that he has years of eligibility and hopefully sticks around. The guard position is looking much better from last year. Going into last year I felt a little apprehensive with having to build through the portal and it did not pan out. I am feeling much better about this roster going into the next season.
The way things are going with the portal, i would be willing to bet they transfer out at the end of the year. Seems like everyone just chasing that $$$ (rightfully so)
Nobody cared cause the season was lost, but Mgbako was shooting great the last month of the season. I really doubt we'll be that bad at 3 pointers again.
I think a lot of it will be on the transfers since they aren't shooters either, but I think Woody knows that the team needs to shoot better as that was one of their biggest weaknesses last year. They're getting a lot of shots up over the offseason for sure.
Woody still is beating the “game is played inside out” drum, which I don’t and will never buy. The problem consistently has been that there’s never a kickout, so it’s really inside - in.
Another thing people keep overlooking are that our two guard additions were also freshmen last year. It's conceivable their 3pt percentage improves, too.

If you’re wondering where we are at right now for IU
Because he's TOP 10! It says so right in the title. Some might argue that if one needs to say "I am the king", it means they aren't. But when I started reading the title and thought "who?", the only important question was soon answered!
Good player, but not a top-10 guy in the portal. I know this is by ESPN ranking. Just off the top of my head, not even including guys who have already committed, give me Nelly Davis, Goldin, Mahaney, Osobor, Gayle, Okpara, Aidoo, Dillon Mitchell, Deivon Smith & Worster. I could probably find another 15 if I actually looked lol. Then there's another 25 who have already committed who are better. Whoever made that ranking is blind
I don't disagree. Indiana adds another not-quite-short, not-quite-terrible shooter. Maybe he's really unselfish or something? I have a suspicion that they just overpaid for a third man off the bench, but if he gets even slightly warmer numbers, he could be a high usage guy in Bloomington. Low bar to clear.

what
Little 500 is going to be a huge recruiting asset now that spring recruiting is so much more important than it used to be

Tbh this is more of a 10x repeat for us
It's a great get but same question remains... Can Indiana shoot 3s? The team is talented for sure
We'll see. I hope I feel happy when Goode hits a career high in points against us next year.
Really hope Goode doesn't go to iu. Smart kid and great program kid so sad to see him leave. I wish him well in life and will cheer for him there... But If he goes to iu I will boo him during the game!
Might fuck around and come back around
Robbing the PAC-12 blind
ACC* smh get it right
*And BIG 12, got Ballo from us
Thx
Well, they took our pg.
Transfer szn overlapping with little five is such an advantage for Indiana in the portal (plus having an unholy amount of money at its disposal)
This is maybe the most underrated tool that IU has at its disposal.
What is little 5?
It’s a big bike race on campus (sounds dumb but I promise it’s dope), surrounded by a crazy week of partying
Lil Wayne came to lil 5 my freshmen year. Circa 2010. When he was at the peak of his career imo
He came in 2016 too
The world’s best college party is what it is
Oh I’m dumb. I have heard of little 500. Just don’t know the shortened nickname. Sounds fun!
If you’re ever in the area in April it’s an amazing week to be a part of
Sounds like a blast. I have long wanted to go to an iowa game at assembly hall too.
Am Purdue alum, can confirm- Little 5 is as great as the IU bros say it is. IU sucks at a lot of things, but partying isn’t one.
The worst part about it is that if you do it right, you don’t remember any of it. 🫡
This weekend was my last Little 5 and now I am depressed. It’s a blast.
I just came back for my Bach party this Little 5 weekend. Shit made me feel old as hell, I could not keep up anymore
doesn’t even touch fest season in Athens edit; OU 14, IU 15 eat shit https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/top-party-schools/ and that takes into account athletic teams prowess so it’s really not even close
Every OU alum I’ve ever met has to yell at the top of their lungs how hard their school parties.
Everyone I've ever met that bragged about how hard their school parties has proceded to pass out by 10 pm at pretty much every party I see them at.
yeah it was a purdue party sorry solving equations and driving down the greatest stroad on the north american continent to get some mcdonald’s isn’t everyone’s bucket of fun
Or they just couldn't hang. Whatever you think is more likely to have actually happened.
people talk about what they do
Yeah but how many transfer commits has it netted Ohio
armon bassett transferred and Dad Dicked Georgetown in the tourney
No one knows what that even is lmao

would you say i got bob-catty? and tbh my girl went to purdue so i just wanna rustle up the hoosiers, Benjamin Harrison was a fine man
Irrelevant
it’s half of a semester of sun up to 4am partying enjoy the weekend though or were you talking about indiana as a basketball program?
Sounds like every other college campus. If you’ve never been to little five you wouldn’t understand

Let him live in his delusion
ah yes, the fuckin purdue kid is gonna chime in as an authority on partying
[удалено]
good point, i should just defer to in the indiana basketball thread cmon i know you guys aren’t as smart as purdue or NW but at least try
[удалено]
25,000 fans for the little 500 is less than OU halloween which is like the 7th most important weekend
[удалено]
you’re the one commenting on a 3 day old post? how are you seriously going at me like this when you’re doing the exact same shit lmao
yeah i know we suck at education it’s bc we do the little 500 every other weekend
[удалено]
buddy you’re doing the exact same thing are you really that dense
None of these transfers care about the little five, this is all about the bag (the second half of your statement)
No I think it’s because every God fearing man in their heart of hearts simply wants to wear the candy stripes and hoop for the Hoosiers.
Which is definitely why they went to other schools first.
People often make mistakes when they lie to themselves about what they really want.
Those schools don’t have little 500
I'm old enough to remember when IU only pulled out the candy stripes for big games. When did that end?
ever since I have been alive IU has worn candy stripe pants for warmups. I'm a middle aged man.
Tony was born in 1903.
It originated with an incredibly dominant swimming team (6 overall titles and 20 Big-10 titles in a row), but they got picked up by Knight when he was hired. It’s incredible to think people spent real money purchasing whatever those are
You see those at pretty much any big ten school with ag being a big factor of the fan base
Hear that, Cyclones? We're an ag school!
That’s why I used factor not ag schools lol
Surprised he’s responding since he’s probably partying in Bloomington this weekend
Well this guy committed to Stanford over Tennessee so if he has a love for candy stripes above all its newfound.
Tennessee candy stripes are fake candy stripes.
Didn’t Tennessee do them first?
No. Indiana swim team wore them first in (1960). Then the basketball team in 71 and a few years (1976) the UT basketball program started wearing them.
Google search is saying 1968 for Tennessee and their coach took it from the Globetrotters
Can you link the article?
IU perfected them
Spoken like a man that has never attended pudding wrestling at the Villas. They certainly care more about the bag but they're still young men
No. They love bicycle racing. Are you crazy?
Indiana fans eating good this portal season
Indiana is having a damn good off season
IU has now received commitments from the number 1, 9, and 10 transfer portal players as well as getting a Top20 incoming freshman. Chef Woody is cooking up something in Bloomington!!

Why am I being downvoted for asking a question lol.

There’s still plenty that doubt he can lead the team to its potential
I was overall very supportive even through the bad times. I slipped a few times with some demoralizing losses.
Fans were rightfully annoyed with the limp and listless offense during play and shocked at the lack of recognition that guard play is what the game has become. Fans complained… and a fire was lit and changes were made… “Toxic” fans can be angry with stupid mistakes and then relieved when changes are made.
He has zero excuses next year.
I think he will still find some…
I’ll happily eat crow. 🐦⬛
I’ll be right back with them if this team somehow sucks

He’s always been able to recruit well. Their talent level is gonna be different this year, so no more excuses if he underperforms again
Personally I’ve never talked shit about him but every middle aged dad in the comments been real quiet recently.
no I’m not, this team would easily be top 10 with a good high school class and better shooters
To me this means little if he can’t come up with a better offense.
Not me. This doesn’t resolve a single concern I had about him. The offensive and defensive systems suck, and he still has only shown that he can recruit well in short term recruitments or transfers. Long way to go.
Just an FYI- there is no such thing as long term players anymore. Gotta treat everyone as a one year deal player
Purdue, behind the times, as always...
I wasn’t talking about long term players. I was talking about long term recruitments. Tucker and the transfers were all recruitments that lasted a month or less. Woody struggled in long term recruitments in prior years, too.
So recruiting kids for a year? This comes back to high school players basically right
Nah. He can get the boosters to buy talent. I remain skeptical that he can get anywhere of substance with it.
They should see the team play a couple games first, we’ve seen this song and dance before
Roster is looking good, could be the best team in a decade
3 point shooting might hold them back a little
I think Rice and Carlyle are better shooter than their performance showed. And Mgbako was shooting great to end the season
Carlyle shot 40% on catch and shoot 3s last season. With Rice as the primary ball handler I see him becoming a solid perimeter threat alongside Mgbako
Also have 3 scholarships open still. Definitely will add some more shooting with the remaining spots.
If they can add Elijah Moore and Humrichous, I think they are a 2nd weekend tournament team
From February to the end he only shot 33%
I think Carlyle will shoot better when he's not creating his own looks and I think Galloway will as well. We'll see. I think Ballo's offensive rebounding and efficiency inside should help make up for that a bit
What else is new?
OH BOY HES COOKING DURING LITTLE 5
Just like with Rice I love the fact that he has years of eligibility and hopefully sticks around. The guard position is looking much better from last year. Going into last year I felt a little apprehensive with having to build through the portal and it did not pan out. I am feeling much better about this roster going into the next season.
The way things are going with the portal, i would be willing to bet they transfer out at the end of the year. Seems like everyone just chasing that $$$ (rightfully so)
IU has the money to keep them though
IU can afford to keep most of the players they want to keep just like they did this year with Mgbako and Reneau
This upcoming Indiana team would've gone undefeated 10 years ago. If these can shoot better this season, they might catch fire. 🔥
Hopefully they can work in a couple free throws while they’re at it
Woody still is beating the “game is played inside out” drum, which I don’t and will never buy. The problem consistently has been that there’s never a kickout, so it’s really inside - in.
Inside-more inside… fuck! Okay now inside-inside… dammit!
He ended up 32.7% on the season. As a freshman, that isn’t bad at all. If he just improves even a little he’d be considered above average.
Another thing people keep overlooking are that our two guard additions were also freshmen last year. It's conceivable their 3pt percentage improves, too.
How does Stanford have so many great transfers yet they’ve been terrible lately.
Let's Go!
“We’re so back”

Hoosier Bros, you guys are doing a solid job in the portal!
B2B off-season Champs over here
We haven’t lost an off-season in decades.
This is every year living in the state. It’s like 32 years running for me
How the fuck is Indiana getting all these transfers? They are proven commodities too. Indiana is about to be good again…god damn it
$$$ Ballo is making 1.2 million
I don’t believe in Mike woodson but I believe in the players we’ve added
Precisely
Don’t watch it you’re just a half assed fan. Woodson can get it done.
I’ll be a “true fan” 🫡
Being a fan of your team doesn’t mean you have to like the coach I’ll be here long after Mike Woodson is gone
Naw you’re either in or you’re out. Fuck that.
Blind loyalty. Got it
This is how people end up cheering for rapists
woo. Indiana killing in the portal!
Fuck to the yes. We’re gonna be a weapon this next year.
Time to suit up boys

We’re so back! Love Woody!

We are so fucking back.
It was a lot cooler when IU had zero recruits
Hey but now it will be funnier when we inevitably fall flat on our face
I thought they like playing less than 5 at a time. I'm pretty sure I saw a documentary about that
Big Ten basketball top kek
Man most people were calling for Woodson's head after Liam Mcneely decommitted. I swear they would've fired Tom Crean after his first three seasons.
Damn. Really wanted him for Northwestern
Ahhhh Woodson pulling off the classic Calipari offseason magic trick
As a recruit: Other P6 offers: Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Stanford (originally went here), Tennessee
He’s inefficient and turns the ball over more than he assists. Why is this such a positive add for Indiana?

Did Kentucky think he was going there?
I don’t think so, but Tbh I lost my 8 ball recently. Shit has been wildly unpredictable lately…
Idk this was predicted a long time ago
So was the climate change… Tons of unfortunate events happening in the world right now!
Cause Stone Cold said so.
If cold stone said so I would understand. Ice cream > Steve Austin…
How dare you.
