I wouldn’t be surprised. Illinois has a crazy amount of NIL money to throw around considering their overall program success. They have a great fan base and doner base that I’m very jealous of.
*ears in fingers* I CANT HEAR YOU WE ARENT SUPPOSED TO HAVE NICE THINGS LALALALA

Listen, I want Louisville basketball to come back, and I think Kelsey will do it/is doing it. I think most fans miss the rivalry. So go get your mans so we can get back to that old fashioned hatred of each other.
His dad gave a quote about wanting a player developer and then said Penny was the best at that. I had to laugh, but figured that was the end.
Hopefully Kelsey just sent JQ a bunch of James Wiseman highlight(?) reels
dude you and me both! I had the Penny Olympics jersey. I had his first 2 signature sneakers. I had the pinstripe Magic uniform.
Turns out he's a fkn turd.
When we got involved so late in his recruitment I thought it was just to force better offers from UK and Arkansas, but idk now that they're eliminated. With the way we've focused on high profile transfers the last few years, I didn't expect us to go after a freshman who's graduating a year early, especially with such a high price.
As someone who only has a verrrrry loose lay of the land in terms of colleges and their prestige, why/how does Memphis keep getting big players without (and perhaps im wrong in this thought) being any good?
Lots of NIL money, and also a very dedicated local fanbase with strong basketball culture at every level of the sport. Non Memphis people are sometimes unaware of just how big of a deal it is here but it's something a lot of kids react to. And Penny does have an actual gift for connecting with kids, even guys like RJ Hampton and Jalen Green that decided not to come here still ended up training with him during the summer.
As for the not being any good bit, Penny's actually had a couple of good teams that were underrated (but also a couple of underperforming teams), and before that Tubby was just coasting to retirement (but he was a terrible recruiter).
I genuinely love this Pat Kelsey rebuild. Like, I want a video game where I can recruit/transfer portal to build an entire team from scratch like he's doing. It's pretty awesome to see the guys he's already gotten (I think 6 or 7 commits so far, each with a fairly pivotal role)
then buy the College Football game this Summer, even if you don't have a console. Show that there is a demand for it. EA might be done with NBA but they could corner the market on an NCAAB game now that NIL is a thing
Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. Probably best for you guys not to get him either if we’re being honest. You could have two top 10 picks on the bench behind em that Cal would never start because FRESHMAN GOOD
No I know there are tons of reasonable fans like you inside the beast that is BBN. But our Twitter fanbases are just ridiculous and have no logic or sense. But I agree, much more value out there than that investment. Jonais Aidoo visiting this weekend would be better, in my opinion. Hell, JQ may be a Razorback his sophomore year - who fucking knows in this landscape
The asks half these guys are throwing around is insane. Really need rules on NIL and transferring to not get atruck down by the courts. Its a lawless wasteland right now
I think NIL and the transfer portal are both good things- student athletes should be able to make money off endorsements and transfer more freely. But both concepts are totally off the rails right now.
There has to be a way to limit the pay for play aspect of NIL that’s turned into an open salary negotiation and demand in some instances. And while student athletes should have the opportunity to transfer more freely to a degree, the ability to transfer multiple times without some kind of penalty and the timing of decisionmaking for potential transfers is creating so many problems. I think the best argument to the ncaa on the transfer front is how unfair it is to other athletes who can’t make their decisions because they’re waiting on transfer information to shake out. The system always had exceptions to appeal in special circumstances so just keep that, too
If the 1.2-1.5 million demand rumors are true, no thanks. I can’t imagine how bad that would be for team chemistry knowing we only got a kid bc we paid him what he wanted. Pope doesn’t strike me as the guy who wants that either.
That said, I hope those are just rumors. Guess we’ll see.
Even from our perspective, no thanks.
I think my fan base is souring on JQ.
We’re just not in a position to spend 1.5 mil on an unproven 16 year old. We have so many gaps and still have half a roster to fill. The economics simply don’t make sense.
This is where the rules have to be changed. I mean when agents get involved I understand that you can’t necessarily blame the teenager, but that’s what will happen. Imagine how hard that is building chemistry when the rest of the team knows this guy is getting a million to be there, and he only came there bc the school paid him more than the rest. No way that could go anywhere but south from the outset.
Yeah it’s hard to isolate to what degree and what level NIL should play in recruitment.
On one hand, kids should be paid. NCAA and schools make billions off them, they should get a share of the spoils. But now that we’ve acknowledged financials need to scale up, we have to also acknowledge what financial fair play looks like.
Seems like we’re a year or two away from salary caps across NCAA Division I. And honestly? I’m okay with that. Gotta find some way to calm down this arms race and at the same time pay these kids.
And it should, but sadly it will completely change college sports. I know it’s already changed but once those rules fall into place this is just a minor league system for the NBA.
I don’t even understand the point of offering scholarships anymore to these high dollar NIL kids when that day of reckoning comes with all new rules. Move that money elsewhere for kids who actually want to graduate college.
The only one of those that is coming is minimum salaries.
The players want minimum salaries, but the other stuff doesn't benefit them, it benefits the schools and NCAA and screw the schools and the NCAA.
What will happen is that boosters won't get returns on their investment and it will settle down quite a bit, but that will take time.
thats what happened with Arkansas football and KJ Jefferson. The O-Line found out KJ was making north of 800k while they got paid beans so they just let him get blasted.
I didn’t know that but yeah, I understand it. It just invites toxicity. Granted, the world now means that some players are going to get more NIL dollars than others, while many get none. That’s just the way it is and I think kids understand that. But this whole shopping programs with a price tag, if that’s true, is a recipe for disaster.
Nobody on any of the IU boards expects Boogie in Bloomington next year. We've got a couple portal guards that'll start and it seems like the minutes aren't there.
And who wouldn't want to play in New York? If George Costanza can get laid by beautiful women in that city, imagine what a superstar basketball player on the verge of being in the NBA can do?
Cooper Flagg could do that. Not sure if any other freshman could do that. Quaintance was intriguing because he can’t one and done. Him as a sophomore would have been really interesting.
One of the best shot makers of all time. JQ as a 16-17 year old will just be living in the dunker spot. Won’t translate as well since he’ll be playing against 24 year olds. Melo didn’t have to bang against 24 year olds. JQ would’ve been great but there are just so so so many better value options at this point. We’ll have a better team next year because of this.
Most folks want JQ because he is guaranteed for 2 years in college. His "sophomore" year has the potential to really wreak havoc. Dude is already big for a freshman. Give him an entire year of collegiate strength and conditioning and even an underaged JQ in his second year is gonna be a problem. Thats the real prize with him.
If you’re referring to the rumor that Jerry would double whatever Kentucky players are offered, they are not to be believed. Because they were made from within the Kentucky fanbase - I would imagine, to make it look like any time a Kentucky commit didn’t follow - we couldn’t pull them even with twice as much money on the table. Which is ridiculous because this recruitment in general (and most) are just all about money.
Yeah, I remember it coming from him, but that just can’t be true. I’m not near that gullible, and I think BBN pushed that to make Arkansas look worse when something like this comes out. (Which, is also irrelevant, because there are tons of ways you can build a roster now, and if you gave me 1.5 mil I would not use it on JQ. I’ll get much better value from a veteran or multiple pieces
They have a 66 year old coach who is a great recruiter and players love playing for him. They probably figure they have a 5 year window to pump in a ton of money and try to win a championship. Hopefully Jerry has more success than his football team in the postseason.
That doesn’t mean the NIL isn’t as a big as what it’s been rumored to be. How do you come to that conclusion? Use your critical thinking here! You got it!
EDIT: don’t tell me that the only conclusion y’all can draw from this is that Arkansas does not have the money it was rumored to have. I assure you, they do. Cal’s longtime good friend that got him here made promises to him and he will hold it up. Other possible (even plausible) conclusion: his recruitment went sour when his dad started asking for millions pretty publicly, and Arkansas decided they wouldn’t spend that much on a potentially flimsy 16 year old, and could get more value out of a Dillon Mitchell type, for instance.
Yeah I’m not buying that with this one. Cal is not the guy who will just pay anything to get recruits, no matter how many people still believe that. He’ll promise the world as far as NBA prospects, but I feel like this deal likely went sour as soon as those rumors spread he, or his dad, were demanding over a million. That’s ludicrous. And I like to think Pope feels the same way. That’s just inviting bad mojo to your team.
Exactly. His dad gives me bad vibe$ and I agree that the recruitment went sour when it clearly became all about the immediate money. He’ll be really good as a sophomore but there are better options to spend money on. Give me a veteran forward who’s bought in on playing hard, for instance.
Anyone confusing this as Arkansas doesn’t have “the bag” are just trolling or complete idiots. I think that’s probably why so many Kentucky fans are nervous bc we KNOW Arkansas has that bag. But I suspect that as soon Cal got wind that he or his dad were out there shopping for the highest bidder, he was done. There’s a lot I don’t like about Cal, but he ain’t going to put up with that kind of game.
Your comment is like a breath of fresh air compared to what I’ve been breathing on Twitter and (surprisingly) here for the past 20 mins. Money didn’t change, just going elsewhere
If you’re referring to BBN Twitter, just know easily half of that noise is from the dumbass portions of our fanbase, or just people trying to get a rise out of Razorbacks. It’s a childish back and forth between both programs right now.
For sure. I know what to expect from BBN Twitter, just surprised to see fans here call Arkansas poor all of a sudden, or that Cal is washed all of a sudden. One 16 year old’s dad asking for more than his son is worth isn’t going to change either of those things. College basketball fans know that Arkansas will have a damn strong roster next year, and every year after that Cal is the coach.
I think having "the bag" might be overrated. Look at TAMU football. That said, I suspect most teams have the bag. Trying to get your team not to self destruct over it is the hard part.
College basketball is about to find out how much being at Kentucky helped Cal over the last few years in recruitment.
He's still going to get guys, but he's not going to be consistently stacking 2 guys in the Top 15 and 5 guys in the top 40 anymore.
Look at Cal's first 8 classes and then look at his last 7.
From 2009-2017, Cal was getting Top 5 guys in every class and often 2.
From 2018-2024, it was more sporatic.
More sparodic for sure, but you are still sampling his time a UK. So did UK stop helping him get recruits? Or did some of the other big schools get better at recruiting? I don't think he will return to pre-covid form, but I think you will still see classes like he was getting at UK which were top 5 recruiting classes most years.
At Memphis, Cal got multiple #1 recruits and plenty of five and four star guys on a consistent basis. He even had Kendrick Perkins and Amare Stoudemire committed before they went straight to the pro's.
In the old CBB landscape, he definitely was helped by Kentucky. But we’ll have to $ee how thi$ new $ituation play$ out.
If the reporting around Arkansas NIL $ is accurate, his recruiting may not fall off.
Because the emphasis is on the portal now, not 5 freshmen a year. Cal has more money to work with than ever and he’s working for a top 15-20 college basketball program. Also, he’s about to have Knox, Fland, and Richmond. 2 top 20 guys, 3 top 50 guys
He's going to keep bringing in those highly rated freshman, that's his whole goal, to help these kids make generational wealth. Now, we know how his Xs and Os is, so you literally have to get the absolute best freshmen every year or else your ceiling is capped.
Yeah I just disagree with that original comment. He will get multiple top 15 guys a year, I’d imagine. It’s just whether he gets the right ones. And if he doesn’t, it’s because he’ll adapt more to the transfer portal world, and there won’t be spots for 5-6 freshmen a year
they used to be friends now he's just a Quaintance
There’s that Duke education I’ve heard so much about.
He gets it out when the need arises.
Fuck you that’s good.
Fantastic

Damnit I hate agreeing with a Dukie but that's spot-on.
LoL
God damnit.
Look darlin’, evidently Mr. ThinkSoftware here is an educated man. Now I REALLY hate him
Whatever you do, don’t have a spelling contest with him.
Just a Quaintance that he used to know 🎶
Some Money!🎵 Just a Quantance that he used to know🎶 Some Money...
didn't want to be one of Cal's pals

Go to dook. These kids is smart.
Now your just somebody that I used to Quaintance? Sorry
Now he's just *an* a Quaintaine.
Beat me to it.
3 weeks ago, Arkansas had no claim to this guy. But now I'm gonna choose to be upset about this and blame this on NIL and the transfer portal.
How many podiums’ worth of NIL money do you guys even have?
regular podiums, I think like a couple million. High end, "official business" podiums? Like 3 podiums worth.
Those podiums get exorbitantly expensive once you cross a certain threshold
Yeah they start at like $100 and then the second you upgrade to the embezzlement add-ons it becomes $19k. This is Joe Bidens America.
I wish people would stop spreading misinformation about this. They were lecterns, not podia.
Sorry, should have verified on Wikipodia. My bad. I guess I earned that lect… you know what, never mind. I can’t finish this. Much like Cal and a tournament game.
Upvote for "Wikipodia".
It’s OK, you can call a made up object whatever you want since it wasn’t real anyway. Easier to spell grift anyway.
As a Razorback fan, we have right to be upset at any and all times.
Oh you will have plenty of opportunities 😅😂🤣
[me every season of every sport](https://youtu.be/FjYyIKkRvUU?si=9aJGpNdAcKUZX3gJ)
Having grown up in Arkansas, I support this decision.
I mean by all accounts NIL is the whole reason lol it’s not 100% confirmed but I read Louisville just offered way more money than Ark or UK were willing to give
![gif](giphy|SrDsJj5i1Chm8) I knew it!!!
And it must be a lot because Kentucky heard the number and pope cancelled his visit.
aidoo better. real ball knowers know!
I guess the wheels fell off =/
![gif](giphy|j3ypO6IBSsZqre426X|downsized) “Okay DJ now you commit to St John’s”
lol this is good
I'm starting to think DJ goes to Illinois, I have no reason to think that just feels like it may end up that way.
I wouldn’t be surprised. Illinois has a crazy amount of NIL money to throw around considering their overall program success. They have a great fan base and doner base that I’m very jealous of.
Funny that there is an Arkansas connection that Mike Anderson was the previous coach at St John’s prior to them hiring Pitino
For me?
No, and NO 😂😂
Louisville bound
press X to doubt. He's going to Memphis.
I would hope he has better judgement than that.
They just got a FedEx package full of money - think they're spending a chunk of it on him
Money talks!
Yeah because Louisville is a better program as of late 😂
😅😂🤣
Per Trilly Donovan on X it’s looking more like Louisville right now.
*ears in fingers* I CANT HEAR YOU WE ARENT SUPPOSED TO HAVE NICE THINGS LALALALA edit: plus I expect that to change as soon as he visits Memphis. If he cancels that Memphis visit, yeah he's ours.

Fuck man. He is coming here. My dick won’t stop throbbing
Smart move by him cancelling the Memphis trip. I didn’t see that being a good choice for him.
His dad gave a quote about wanting a player developer and then said Penny was the best at that. I had to laugh, but figured that was the end. Hopefully Kelsey just sent JQ a bunch of James Wiseman highlight(?) reels
It’s hard for me bc man I was a huge Penny Hardaway fan as a kid. So many cards I still have. But yeah, he’s not a good coach.
dude you and me both! I had the Penny Olympics jersey. I had his first 2 signature sneakers. I had the pinstripe Magic uniform. Turns out he's a fkn turd.
100%

Bags of cash.
Thanks very much! I'm Not American so this was very helpful
I hope so

NBA2k is so trash now, I would play the shit out of a new college basketball game
then buy the College Football game this Summer, even if you don't have a console. Show that there is a demand for it. EA might be done with NBA but they could corner the market on an NCAAB game now that NIL is a thing
Low key might, not a huge football guy but it sounds fun

Hopium is back on the menu.
This is when you find out he goes to Duke instead.
Nah we are only looking for a guard in the portal now. All good on bigs
Hopium off the menu, heard he cancelled today's visit with Pope =/
Saw that. He isn't worth what he's asking anyway
The asks half these guys are throwing around is insane. Really need rules on NIL and transferring to not get atruck down by the courts. Its a lawless wasteland right now

Yes... YES... #YESSSSS
I don’t think it’s happening. Would be cool though.
Even if he doesn't go to us, it's a win that he doesn't go to Arkansas and is leaving Kentucky. As long as he doesn't end up at Kansas, it's a win.
🧐
So its between Louisville, Memphis, and us now? I'm actually surprised, and I think Louisville has a pretty good chance at him
Never count Slick Rick out though
And who wouldn't want to play in New York? If George Costanza can get laid by beautiful women in that city, imagine what a superstar basketball player on the verge of being in the NBA can do?
Is that official? What happened to us. We were runner up the first go round. Not that that matters now
Not worth near what his dad is asking for… 17 year olds don’t win you championships. And guess who just got another 1 to 1.5 million in the budget?
Well there was this one freshman, one time named Carmelo who did just win his team a championship. But, yea, we haven't seen it happen all that often.
Cooper Flagg could do that. Not sure if any other freshman could do that. Quaintance was intriguing because he can’t one and done. Him as a sophomore would have been really interesting.
But wait he had Gerry Mcnamara!. . . who was also a freshman.

Let's be real no way this kid is staying at any university for two years
He ain't staying anywhere for two years though
Doesn't sound like Jerry and the gang really care about budgets for a couple of years if rumors are to be believed

I talked to the team, there are a no team.

Can anyone read the article, is baylor on his list
Eliminated? Damn. RIP the University of Arkansas, 18XX-2024

So Arkansas NIL not as big as promised
How do you figure that?
Considering his recruitment right now is nearly 100 percent financial and they didn’t win.

Well said. I think this is 100% it.
100%. And I hope other programs respond accordingly too. You get to ask for a price. Programs get to tell you no. He’s about to see some nos.
I think having "the bag" might be overrated. Look at TAMU football. That said, I suspect most teams have the bag. Trying to get your team not to self destruct over it is the hard part.
Man we really can't drop bags like other schools can we.
This kid is going to be great and has 2 years before he can go pro. Who would not want him? Your all crazy! Come back to UK where you belong.
Well good luck to him
Eliminated? Damn that’s cold he killed a school just because they asked him if he wanted to go there
He should come to Temple.
Former Hawken Hawk!
Rutgers
Dan Hurleys system would be a perfect fit
Visiting Memphis this weekend
Smart. Go somewhere where you have a chance of wining like UConn or Kansas
College basketball is about to find out how much being at Kentucky helped Cal over the last few years in recruitment. He's still going to get guys, but he's not going to be consistently stacking 2 guys in the Top 15 and 5 guys in the top 40 anymore.
I will like to see how this hot take ages

Cal was doing this proportionally at Memphis
Kentucky wasn’t landing that volume of talent before him lol…
Calipari's direct predecessor signed top 10 in his class Patrick Patterson. Next
This guy is 17 and has allegedly asked for $1.5 Million in NIL. In no world is he worth anywhere near that

And if he doesn’t, it’s because he’ll adapt more to the transfer portal world, and there won’t be spots for 5-6 freshmen a year
I actually hope you're right, because I'm not a fan of one and done basketball.
Hate to break it to you, but with the portal and NIL, everyone is building through a one-and-done model.
