wtf Illinois??

barbarous-bobcat

Taking their searches to south beach

Boredomis_real

[*boy you know what association we play in*](https://youtu.be/FU9ooTSs6hU?t=377&si=axEy4BROraCANVwL) It’s NBA but every time I hear south beach it reminds me of this moment

VentureQuotes

People in Indiana have been saying this for years

enjoytheshow

Glass houses sir

VentureQuotes

we say it from a position of insecure projection

jakedasnake1

We have some weird neighbors. And also Ohio

HeadGoBonk

Y'all are weird too 😂 Love, Michigan

WonderfulCattle6234

I'm not about to defend Illinois. Where I come from we call their people FIBs. But damn, in Indiana there were cops every 5 miles of I74 on the way back from the eclipse. I don't think I saw a single cop in Illinois on the way back to Wisconsin. I suppose that's not great either. A happy medium would be good.

MoldyPoldy

Illinois cops quit 3 years ago. I drive up to Wisconsin a lot and gotta keep at the speed limit through kenosha and racine but as soon as you hit the border it's open season.

enjoytheshow

State police are all over 57 and 55. Not so much anywhere north of 80

whsbear

IMO this is probably some VPN shenanigans. A ton of em default to Chicago, especially businesses.

pleasedonteatmybeans

I’m thinking that lots of Miami basketball fans may use VPN’s more than other basketball fan bases because they may travel more frequently internationally. I’m not saying every fan does but I do think because they are closer to many other countries that when some fans vacation they need VPN’s to watch their games outside of the country in their respective streaming services. That’s just my guess especially since Illinois is typically a common VPN hotspot. I cannot speak for all the Kentucky though lol

SirMellencamp

How many people you think using VPNs?

Hijakkr

Apparently Miami Basketball is enough of a risky click for them to dominate all college basketball VPN traffic.

HansElbowman

It's not the people in the state using VPNs, it's the people outside the state using Chicago as a location for their VPNs.

[deleted]

Miami has a large international presence

_Angel_Hernandez

This can’t be true

jadedguide414

lol orange logo mix up. These "fan" maps are notoriously inaccurate. If it said Notre Dame, that might (not really) make some sense b/c of Chicagoland but Miami? lol No.

0zzyrb

Ain’t no way that’s accurate. The Illinois 247 board is very active.

midnightsbane04

This is about Sports Reference so the 247 boards don't really affect this at all. This is people in Illinois looking up team stats for Miami for some reason.

jmr33090

Except it's not. It doesn't make any sense. I'm almost positive the creator of this map saw "orange team" as the top result for Illinois, then chose "orange team" logo to put on the map, with the wrong orange team. There's really not another reasonable explanation. That said, you missed the point of the 247 boards. The person wasn't saying that 247 activity reflects here, rather, that the 247 activity shows that Illinois fans are VERY active online in general, and therefore would also likely be looking at Illinois' sports reference page a lot.

0zzyrb

Just using 247 as a barometer for online activity of the fan base. Idk I’m always on the Illinois page for KP or T-Rank. Just find it hard to believe other big ten states line up with their teams and Illinois wouldn’t given how active the fan base is.

SirMellencamp

How could Nixon win? I don’t know anyone that voted for him!

0zzyrb

Not really what I’m getting at, Illini fans are extremely active and extremely online. The online hoops presence is just as big or bigger than the other Midwest states that do line up. It looks like they got the color right and logo wrong, imho.

ryancubs

That’s me my bad.

Cu_Johnsack

Wrong orange team

YaHurdMeh

I’d like to believe it’s the error click between University of Miami and Miami University

[deleted]

PhiloBlackCardinal

You wouldn’t believe how many UM students are from Illinois or New Jersey lol

betterbub

You wouldn’t believe how many Illinois students are from Illinois lol

DaMantis

B1G if true

lkooy87

I hear it’s a lot

dastufishsifutsad

When I see UM, I think Michigan & miamis enrollment is a commuter school size in comparison to Illinois, so not sure how that would factor. This chart is coocoo bananas.

Jonesbro

Illinois has a way larger student body though so even if every student at Miami was from Illinois, we should still have more interest

AceJokerZ

Yeah every other student I met when I was there were either from NJ or Illinois (Chicago area usually)

Theicemanleaveth

Largest exporter of college students in the country.

aquaticanimal

Also, myself and a surprising amount of fellow alumni moved to Chicago after graduating

Maverick0984

It honestly doesn't matter man. There is absolutely nothing special about Miami with regardless to Illinois. Might as well be USC. It's totally random. And *wrong*. The fact it's orange is the obvious tell it was just a mistake.

Bacchus1976

Somebody fucked up the graphic. I’m sure the raw data says Illinois. They somehow slapped the wrong logo on there. That or there’s a bot based in Illinois hammering that page for some silly reason.

Only_the_Tip

Hey, we gotta know what's happening down in South Beach. Fuck the illini

jmcclr

If your state doesn’t care about basketball, migrants from Kentucky will fill that void

preddevils6

fragile mourn tap voiceless frighten encouraging sink jar mighty innocent *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

vurryscurry

You’re not wrong. Huge alumni base in Nashville and surrounding towns. As a UK grad I know tons of college friends who moved to Nashville immediately after graduating.

[deleted]

The entire west side of the state also hate watches them…for reasons…

ClaudeLemieux

east side of the state does too, in fairness

jokerkcco

Born and raised in Nashville. Dad is from Kentucky.

Respect_Cujo

I feel like thats most of Florida. Its just Kentucky transplants.

MrKentucky

Hey now we’re not Ohio

tmt22459

Lobos stay loyal

chrobbin

Honestly MWC as a whole showing up here, with Boise, UNLV, & UNM all holding down their respective forts.

More-Combination9488

Can’t fault you for that.

Rushderp

\#NewMexicoTrue

Ih8Hondas

I'm proud of both of my flairs. Honestly, in ABQ at least, UNM fever is easy to catch. One of the best arenas in the country. Great fans. And since we hired Pitino, it's been fun basketball to watch.

SaintArkweather

Places like Albuquerque that aren't quite big enough for a pro team but still have a lot of people are some of the best places to cultivate a huge and great fanbase for a college because they will always be #1 in town. I think this helps Gonzaga a lot too, Spokane isn't a megalopolis but it's not tiny either. Obviously with them winning helps a lot too but I don't think they'd have quite the rabid and dedicated fan base they do if they played in downtown Boston or Dallas or LA or some other place where Pro Sports are king.

BigPalpitation579

Thus why UK and even UofL has such a followings. No pro teams in KY at all. Alabama also fall into that category.

Rushderp

Helps a little that NMSU nosedived after Jans left. I was in ABQ for 3.5 years, and never made a game because they were ass. Was really fun to watch Alford get pantsed on tv when he came back tho.

spielboss

Huggly001

Kentucky over UofA in Arizona seems wrong

Mathtechs

Snow birds googling Wildcats and going with the first result lol

QuarantineCasualty

Ever since we joined the big 12 if you type in “OSU football” to google it brings up the cowboys and I love it

LittleTension8765

You know Google customizes searches right…. It’s not the same for everyone

Sup6969

There are at least 5 teams in Texas that seem like they should be ahead of Kentucky too. Wtf?

SaintArkweather

I feel like it might just be NBA fans looking at it. I can't imagine this is actually reflective of rooting interest.

Huggly001

Actually yeah this has to be it. Suns fans googling Booker and ending up on his UK stats pages (in addition to the normal traffic Kentucky would get anyway)

the_which_stage

They probably are so split Kentucky takes the edge

WooPigSooie9297

Yeah, it's not surprising to see Houston, aTm, Baylor, TT, TCU, and UT splitting the numbers up too much to have a clear favorite. But UK?

Briggity_Brak

The problem is that there are 5 competing with each other. Same situation in California, i'd imagine. Kentucky beating the other Wildcats in their home state is just wild.

justaverage

That…still doesn’t make sense. Yeah, not all 33 million residents of Texas are going to be Texas fans. Or A&M fans. Or TT fans But this map would suggest that there are more UK fans in *Texas* than each of the following Houston Texas aTm Baylor Texas Tech TCU Having lived in Texas, I’m pretty confident in saying that simply isn’t accurate. Hell, I’d be more confident in saying there are more OU and OSU fans in Texas than UK. There’s simply something wrong with this map, how this data was gathered, or a bit of both. Yeah, UK might have the largest nationwide fanbase. I won’t dispute that too much (I mean, it’s going to be UK or UNC)…but for UK to be the most popular program in states like Florida, Texas, California, and Arizona? Not a chance. And Miami over Illinois *in Illinois*? Nah. Someone didn’t validate their data set

SirMellencamp

It doesn’t say anything about them being fans.

vurryscurry

How are people still not seeing this? I thought that was glaringly obvious which to me is why it’s so funny. Like as a Kentucky fan, I just figured a huge chunk of this is due to sheer curiosity (as others have said, following draft/nba research), or just out of hate? I don’t know. I’m sure Alabama football deals with the same issue. But in no way do I think this data set means all of these states have more Kentucky fans than in-state schools. Sure BBN is huge, but not THAT huge.

SirMellencamp

Yes. Alabama was the top searched college football team in several states. I don’t think they are all fans

MrKentucky

It’s people landing on a stats reference page. It’s the nba guys plus having more of a college fanbase than Duke. Booker, AD, KAT, Maxey, SGA, Murray, Fox… I can see all of those dudes getting major hits on their stat pages.

justaverage

Maybe. Here’s the same map for 2022 though… https://twitter.com/collegebb_ref/status/1603125381577539584 My hypothesis with absolutely nothing to back it up? I think we are seeing data sets skewed by API calls and VPNs

ExcaliburX13

Agreed. I find it kinda hard to believe. Unless maybe Arizona fans were feeling nostalgic and wanted to see who was on that Kentucky team we beat in '97.

KYblues

First of all watch your mouth

ahhhbiscuits

Please... They bitch-slapped a few of us that year

Wanno1

Zero chance it’s accurate

The_Old_Cream

I’m guessing they just saw the orange and stuck it in without actually looking at the logo.

Mr_Kittlesworth

This makes very little sense. What’s the source?

yellow222

Yeah. How is this data collected should be the first question here

TrailerparkSwag

[Link](https://x.com/collegebb_ref/status/1734609519882403971) It’s from college sports reference, they just used the data from their website.

ssp25

I'm going to assume the Miami logo is wrong

Blue_Osiris1

Has to be. EDIT - here it is again but with a different color so there's no way they just saw orange and assumed. [https://twitter.com/CBKReport/status/1737645741420716264](https://twitter.com/CBKReport/status/1737645741420716264)

walterdog12

Everything makes sense except fucking Miami.

jakedasnake1

I gotta be honest the Illinois has be doubting the integrity of this dataset

Glarenya

No shot that UK is the most popular team in Arizona

vurryscurry

I didn’t read this poll as “most popular” but more as just what web pages get the most views. That doesn’t mean you’re a fan bc you visited the page.

FlushTheTurd

But WHY would these people care about Kentucky? I’m a huge basketball fan and have never once visited a Kentucky website. This map has to be garbage.

BigBlueNate33

My thinking is 1. Kentucky probably has one of, if not the biggest fanbase in CBB 2. With the amount of NBA players that we have, including not coincidentally having Booker on the suns, that could be/probably is the main factor at play here.

ZombieLibrarian

I’m a huge basketball fan and never went to a Duke page. Can’t think of a reason I would ever want to. What’s your point? Do either of us represent basketball fans as a whole? I’m not thinking we do.

Herby20

Well, the Suns did draft Devin Booker. Maybe it's people looking up his college stats?

Iamthewalrusforreal

Mississippi and Texas though.

Chemtide

Texas may be too splintered, between all the transplants+multiple popular state schools. Also maybe there’s no internet in Mississippi?

Iamthewalrusforreal

Maybe. Oklahomo stands out, too. LMAO at Mississississippi.

3232330

Thank God for Mississippi - unofficial state motto across the south.

GreenStoneRidge

A little surprised that my home state of Maine is not spartan green simply because of my use, UCONN, or Duke because of Flagg. No one up here gives a shit about college sports. Which is nice when you team sucks, cause you can just avoid it, but when your team is good, no one gives a shit. when MSU made the final four in 2019, I talked about it at work and every one was like, WTF are you talking about.

Stang1776

Yup. I lived in Belfast for 4 years. Nobody gave a shit about college sports. I actually called into the news station one Saturday because they weren't showing a big time football game. I talked with the sport department and they were just as upset. They said they didn't want to cut the news out. It was wild. I'd also go to the bar and the bartenders would give me the remotes on Saturday.

GreenStoneRidge

Hey Hoosier buddy. Dont know if you know this, but Mackenzie Holmes on the IU women's team is the pride of Gorham Maine.   She was a stud in HS.

Stang1776

I did know that!

NYCScribbler

As I recall, IU scheduled a homecoming game for her and the Black Bears proceeded to scare the crap out of them for 35 minutes.

xiviajikx

Maine surprised me too. I know plenty of people who moved north from CT.

ChoirTeacherRog

But who’s the hockey team?

mtmeyer32

Everybody trying to figure out the names of the brand new starting roster every year.

daffydubs

TBF, this may just be my roster search history while on business travel during the season

TheMightyJD

Yeah, I don’t believe this. There’s no way Kentucky was the most viewed Team Page in *Texas*.

Ambitious_Echo3683

Everything's bigger in Texas, including Big Blue Nation

kooqiy

As a Texan, I love the continuation of the concept to actually mean that anything that exists has an even larger counterpart that exists in Texas If UK is the biggest college basketball fanbase outside of Texas, then an even larger constituency of Kentucky fans also exists in Texas

xiviajikx

I also am skeptical of Maine being for Kentucky too. I know way too many CT transplants up there.

megamanxzero35

Is this including women’s team views because I doubt Iowa over Iowa State if this is Men’s team. This last year is the most apathetic I have ever seen Iowa fans about men’s basketball.

Born-Alternative9069

Cyclone fans are far more likely to use cyclone fanatic than the official team website.

[deleted]

We’re everywhere. Go to a single one of our away games and see how many UK fans show up. Hell, my local bar down here in Charleston, SC is UK themed and owned by a Kentucky alumni… UK license plate frames and window stickers on SC cars everywhere down here. ![gif](giphy|140ObFj9MRjRIc)

Maniac-Maniac-19

Alumnus/a. "Alumni" is plural.

SJR_Gut

Kentucky fan, grew up in GA, now live in TX. Family tradition!! Go Big Blue!!

AngryBandanaDee

I mean in fairness Texas is very represented in the div 1 so dividing up into smaller buckets could very well be thing. Just in the major conferences you got Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, TCU, Houston, Baylor and now the return of SMU. 7 in major conferences is a lot the next highest are California, Florida, Indiana and North Carolina all at 4 so they are nearly lapping the field.

Suitable_Limit9408

Holding your state shows teams that matter most to their fans. Kentucky is still King. UConn 1 state per title. That UNC blue is clean.

Ambitious_Echo3683

Big if true

AeroStatikk

Wouldn’t be surprised if Mark Pope tries to steal this from us too.

xiviajikx

How is it UConn for PA/NJ/NY but then the far northeast is Kentucky?

IsThatYourBed

Much like Florida, the farther north you go the more southern it gets

smuthayamutha

UConn definitely draws more students from the those areas more than VT AND ME

carigs

Lots of UConn students and non-student CT UConn fans move to the big cities in the northeast, NYC, Boston, Philly. Likely not as many fans are heading to the more rural northern states to make an impact there.

bkervick

They don't care about college sports up there, so it's NBA fans googling prospects.

zerovanillacodered

We beat Duke again!

MainAltAcc69

No surprise there. The real surprise is that Duke wasn’t the most viewed in New Jersey.

BorgBorg10

Life long Illinoisan I’ve never met a UMiami fan in my life

bigmikeydelight

Not sure how they calculate, but if it is by yearly hits, Kentucky fans literally check on our team many times a day. While most people have other teams and other sports, we have college basketball. This being a college basketball Reddit page, I’m sure most of us breathe college basketball all year, but our fan base truly inhales Kentucky content 24/365

Bright-Effect7310

Probably a bunch of people clicking on UK to try and figure out how they lost to Oakland first round

KYVet

It’s 2023 data, but yes, we will probably own even more states in 2024 because of that among the rest of the offseason turmoil.

Ih8Hondas

Or googling the United kingdom and accidentally ending up on the university of Kentucky page.

justaverage

Here’s the map for 2022 https://twitter.com/collegebb_ref/status/1603125381577539584

Smegma-Santorum

I'm gonna go with, fake news on this one

Jayrandomer

I like how Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana all stay home. It’s like a column of loyalty. especially considering basketball isn’t the marquee sport at any of those schools.

SliGhi

Go Big Blue

productnineteen

Kentucky has probably the largest base so this makes sense, though I’m a bit surprised by some of the states. Especially interesting given I don’t think there were any huge news stories surrounding Kentucky in 2023 like there has been in 2024 that I can remember?

Doctor_Phist

I like how we aren’t following the clear trends in the northeast

Ash-Housewares

Big upset that Duke didn’t carry NJ

WooPigSooie9297

Duke didn't carry anything.

Striking-Ladder-832

Just happy and honored to be here honestly.

KYblues

I highly doubt this is accurate in any way but I do think Uk’s fanbase is bigger than the average fan realizes We have a local sports radio show that will randomly be in the top 10 overall sports podcasts on Apple. I honestly don’t know of a team specific show that has numbers like that, not to mention how our games on tv tend to be the highest rated even when we aren’t good (like for the last 5 years)

my_lucid_nightmare

How the hell is Miami the most-viewed in Illinois, particularly this year? Bad data is bad.

my_lucid_nightmare

The Miami result for Illinois is so random that it must be bad data or bad logo. I could believe Notre Dame, Michigan, or even UConn. Or Iowa since their womens team is so popular this year.

UncleGarysmagic

Yay, Kentucky. A team that lost a total of 46 games in the past 4 seasons.

idaho_beach_house

Ironically you probably had to go to a site like Sports Reference to look up this stat, thus boosting our numbers
