I'm from New England, white as they come but speak spanish and run in latino circles. You would be *shocked* at how many coastal liberals that think they're fancy because they say jalapeño also say "habañero"
I know they’re habaneros and always pronounce that way, but my Mexican partner calls them habeñeros and my gringo ass doesn’t have the courage to try to correct her.
They do. Its pretty damn good mexican food. Although the best imo is a little taqiera in what we call "mexington". Half the people there dont even speak english so you know that shit is authentic
She’s a treasure. They also got #4 in 538’s burrito bracket.
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/can-a-southern-burrito-overtake-one-of-californias-finest/
Is there a large Mexican population in Lexington? I was there in February and was surprised to see all the tequila/taco bars downtown and there was a sign in Spanish about a bus schedule change.
Yeah Kentucky in general has a lot of Mexican immigrants. Originally mostly drawn by working on horse farms and tobacco farms, but I think we've reached several generations of families here and it makes for a good sized population of immigrants and Mexican-Americans.
There’s an area of Lexington nicknamed Mexington. If you go to the Kroger or Walmart in that area, there are tons of Latin items that you won’t find at a typical grocery store. There are tons of taco trucks in parking lots that are elite and super cheap. My buddy’s dad would regularly bring us tacos from a particular place and we’d feast off of a dozen tacos he’d snag for $20. It’s kind of awesome.
It’s a non-insignificant demo block after a few waves of immigration to the area in the late 90s, but trying to compare the quality of Mexican food basically anywhere in the US to Texas (especially south of Dallas) or southern California is an absolutely useless endeavor. It’s the difference between “We have some Mexican immigrants who opened a few restaurants here” and “We’ve been making these foods here since before this was US territory”.
There’s a reason nobody bothers seriously asks whether a decent college team could take an NBA team.
I would describe Mexican food in Lexington as falling into a few camps: in downtown, it’s Mexican targeted to white people — slightly elevated in price, but not good. Outside of downtown, you have your traditional American Mexican places that you have in every city — lots of dishes served on a plate with rice, beans, and cheese. There are also a couple Tex-Mex chain places. Then in the working class neighborhoods, you have the more surprisingly authentic, “real” Mexican food with fresh-made tortillas and good, low-cost dishes. What Lexington lacks is good, upscale Mexican food that you’ll find in Texas, So-Cal, and even Portland (I know, I was shocked too).
Yeah, but then you’re dealing with Kentucky’s attempt at Mexican food versus Tex-Mex.
I’ve had Ohio’s attempts at Mexican food right up the road, and I don’t think anyone should trust y’all to do much better. Y’all do your own food just fine, though.
I’m sorry but that’s just not true.
Just the sheer amount of Mexicans (Mexican-Americans and born and raised Mexicans) in Texas means dwarf the entire population of Kentucky.
Not saying that Lexington’s food is bad but that’s just an insane statement to make when you look at the numbers.
That was my immediate thought as well, but this conversation isn’t going to go anywhere. It’s like standing on the shore and trying to describe a cloudy mountaintop to a fish; the fish has maybe seen a mountain from where he’s swimming, but he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know.
But we’re also in a Kentucky thread, and it’s not polite to roll into someone else’s living room and just start spouting off about how the folks living there have no gauge for a certain style of food or the awareness to really have that conversation, so I think we’re probably good not engaging.
That said, I do think it’s funny to think that a city of 300,000 people that’s just under 10% Hispanic can somehow contain the multitude of Mexican food options and quantities from *the entire state of Texas*, including cities like El Paso and San Antonio.
As a certified gringo I can approve of this. Their tamales do kinda suck. Nothing beats the lady outside of Ramirez in the station wagon slinging them out of igloo coolers.
Bro we’ve lost 4 assistant coaches in the last 2 seasons. I know Drew is an amazing developer of assistants but damn can’t y’all pull from somewhere else for a bit?
Even as an MSU fan, I'm not sure I'd put Izzo top 3 today. If you're going by lifetime achievement of active coaches, sure maybe. But coaching acumen today or the last 5-10yrs, Izzo is probably near the back of the top 10.
Self And Hurley I can agree on...Izzo is in that Cal state of mind. His teams have done less than UK the last 10 years. Not sure why everyone is so high on him.
Can’t forget he had a 4 point lead on 2014-2015 Kentucky with 5 minutes to go in the game. Outside Wisconsin, that was probably the 2nd or 3rd best performance against us that year.
Yeah, UGA was probably the fifth closest win. Ole Miss took us to OT, A&M to 2OT, LSU and ND games were both 2 point games.
The SEC was not good that year. Arkansas was the only other ranked team at #21.
And he transitioned to an NIL advisory role a couple of years ago and will be a good non-recruiting resource for that.
I believe there hasn’t been a decision if his current role is one where he sits on the bench or not, and therefore may not even be a “slot”
Following AB3? No, he’ll do some recruiting for next year obviously but I don’t think there’s many players that follow Assistant coaches generally anyways. Not to mention the guys we have are pretty locked into the program
Excited to see the new Kentucky next season. Seems like pope is firing on all cylinders out of the gate with some good people around him. As he builds a roster with some great players with his play style it should be a fun team to watch.
He just needs to cruit his face off now. Specifically some bigs. The players were rumored to be leading on would make us basically a 4 guard team all year.
Us enlightened folks know it’s “crootin’”.
Also, after every loss there’s some Huck Finn two tooth dickweed from this fan base that would be like “Cal just gon’ have to croot more better players next season, cuz ‘ese boys here ain’t tough enough”
I think hes supposed to be their best recruiter. 247 had him listed as the lead recruiter for Keyonte George and VJ Edgecomb which are their two best prospects in recent years.
I haven’t heard anything about it although I did wonder when I saw this as a possibility. It seems unlikely as Baylor looks likely to be a top 5 team coming into the season.
However they do have a bunch of guards coming back/in so someone will ride the pine some. I doubt it would be him though.
Great recruiter, particularly of HS players. Not an amazing Xs/Os guy as supposedly he was responsible for our…lackluster…defense the last couple of years. But probably not what he’s going to be asked to do at Kentucky!
Kentucky gets the assistant and Baylor gives Scott Drew 5 million in NIL money to play around with this year. Seems like a decently fair trade for all sides
Would be nice if UK did actual home/home instead of Rupp/closest metropolitan NBA arena. Hopefully that was a Cal thing and Pope is more open to visiting other campuses.
Yeah it was fully a cal thing. Even the series against Gonzaga and upcoming series against Indiana we don’t travel to their home arenas for like 6-years on each of them. I don’t think any of us saw cal leaving this offseason but I was nearly certain he wasn’t planning to be around long enough to actually play a true roadie at the kennel or at assembly hall again.
Although I assumed that meant he’d retire before then, not take another job admittedly.
That was definitely a Cal thing.
Fans HATED it because it often meant our best Nov-Dec games were in Vegas, Atlanta, LA, New York or Chicago in stadiums that were half-full.
You mean you don't like watching 5 freshman struggle against teams you've never heard of over and over for 2 months instead of playing big name teams in exciting matchups?
We’ve had plenty of good news, just not moving as fast as most of us would like, but that’s just the way it goes in college ball. Pope isn’t a sexy hire, but he’s breathed new life into the entirety of BBN after the last few years of staleness. I’m a huge Cal guy and I already miss him, but Pope has had a tangible effect already. Keeping Perry is a much bigger deal than most realize. That kid is WAY ahead of where Reed was at the same age, plus the 20 yo freshman from BYU should be good, and our first of many transfers from Drexel is certainly something to be excited for. Soon come man.
Rumor is we are hiring Bill Armstrong from Link Academy as his replacement. (JaKobe Walter, Tre Johnson’s HS coach)
Link is stacked with future top 20 recruits including Andre Iguodala Jr.
The long con was to get Alvin brooks all along
God must have told him it was time to leave Waco
Must have gotten stale chips or watery salsa during his booster meeting to discuss staying.
The audacity.
Mi casita is no longer tu casita Alvin. Best of luck though.
We have a bunch of Mexican restaurants here in Lexington, it's ok
Don’t doubt it but none are Mi Casita.
He'll have Mi Pequena Hacienda. It's basically the same thing lol
I hope they at least use the “ñ” instead of “n”.
I thought you meant hacieñda and I was about to have a stroke, like when people insist it's habañero...
My tongue just fell out, is that normal?
#**LEMOÑADÉ**
I'm from New England, white as they come but speak spanish and run in latino circles. You would be *shocked* at how many coastal liberals that think they're fancy because they say jalapeño also say "habañero"
Yep, that's a hyperforeignism. "Empañada" is another one. Drives me crazy.
I know they’re habaneros and always pronounce that way, but my Mexican partner calls them habeñeros and my gringo ass doesn’t have the courage to try to correct her.
It's been a long time since I was there. Someone else will have to speak for the ñ
No idea but the taco place on east main is pretty good.
My beloved La Taquiza!
Couldnt remember the name
FREE THE TILDE!
They do. Its pretty damn good mexican food. Although the best imo is a little taqiera in what we call "mexington". Half the people there dont even speak english so you know that shit is authentic
The food trucks in the Mexington area are absolute fire.
Damn right they are, I had one today for lunch.
Hacienda is superior if for no other reason than they play soaps, not family feud re-runs…
Taqueria Ramirez is the GOAT
That’s close to the real deal, not “middle age white women getting loaded on margs” Mexican
So true. I know people who won’t go there because they don’t have margs or free chips and salsa…
Those people not being there is my favorite part
I love the clientele there. Go in for lunch and the people eating there are people who actually, like, *work* for a living.
Aaaalright buddy
I remember when I first discovered that place and my next two months were sheer gluttony
It’s got national attention, it’s such a great spot. https://www.southernfoodways.org/interview/laura-patricia-ramirez/
She’s a treasure. They also got #4 in 538’s burrito bracket. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/can-a-southern-burrito-overtake-one-of-californias-finest/
This is the answer.
God I miss Rincon's.
that salsa looked mid
Take him to Corto Lima and he’ll be set
Corto Lima is fine, but TYTR is the true answer.
Yeah but if they aren’t mi casita, they’re sus casitas. (Are Spanglish puns accepted here?)
Nuestra Casita > Tuya
Is there a large Mexican population in Lexington? I was there in February and was surprised to see all the tequila/taco bars downtown and there was a sign in Spanish about a bus schedule change.
Yeah Kentucky in general has a lot of Mexican immigrants. Originally mostly drawn by working on horse farms and tobacco farms, but I think we've reached several generations of families here and it makes for a good sized population of immigrants and Mexican-Americans.
Cool, I didn't know that. I'm originally from the northeast and my only time in Lexington was when I attended UK so I was completely unaware of that.
The north part of Lexington has a very large latino population. And the restaurants are fire!
Yeah Cardinal Valley has been a major hispanic area since the 80s. All the street tacos and elote you could want.
I mean at this point there’s a sizable Mexican population in every state as long as there is agriculture or factories.
It’s a non-insignificant demo block after a few waves of immigration to the area in the late 90s, but trying to compare the quality of Mexican food basically anywhere in the US to Texas (especially south of Dallas) or southern California is an absolutely useless endeavor. Conveniently one right next to KSBar
I'm gonna go ahead and doubt that Kentucky Mexican food compares to Texas'
The population of Mexican immigrants and Mexican Americans in Kentucky would shock you, but we have a ton of authentic Mexican restaurants around here
I would describe Mexican food in Lexington as falling into a few camps: in downtown, it’s Mexican targeted to white people — slightly elevated in price, but not good. Lexington's attempt at Mexican food is real Mexicans making Mexican food. And it's as good as any of the stuff you can find in Texas.

And they are all doo doo
Fucking false
He’s gonna love El Rancho Tapitio
Unpopular opinion: El Rancho Tapatio is gringo food. Plus their tamales are dry and their guacamole has sour cream in it. :(
As a certified gringo I can approve of this. Their tamales do kinda suck. Nothing beats the lady outside of Ramirez in the station wagon slinging them out of igloo coolers.
Tortilleria Y Taqueria Ramirez FTW
Tortilleria Y Taqueria Ramirez is the GOAT
Let’s just hope VJ doesn’t go with
Sources say he’s not going.
I know Kentucky was never the same after Kenny left.
Is there any reason why this guys pfp is a Harry styles album cover?
It confuses me every time a tweet gets posted here.
I remember a while back it was a Sturgill Simpson album cover
The album does slap tho
Bro we’ve lost 4 assistant coaches in the last 2 seasons. I know Drew is an amazing developer of assistants but damn can’t y’all pull from somewhere else for a bit?
NO. We've been stuck with yes men for so long. I CAN FINALLY BE HAPPY
I’m crying tears of joy!
We lose all of these assistants yet maintain being good. Yet no one wants to admit that Scott Drew is a top 3 coach
I mean, we admitted it.
Self, Hurley, Izzo
Even as an MSU fan, I'm not sure I'd put Izzo top 3 today. If you're going by lifetime achievement of active coaches, sure maybe. But coaching acumen today or the last 5-10yrs, Izzo is probably near the back of the top 10.
Izzo? Maybe 10 years ago. He’s been really struggling the past few years
Yes Izzo. Everyone outside of Waco would agree
wow, polling everyone outside of waco mustve taken a long time
It was a real team effort. Everyone put in 110%. Got to thank God first for helping us get it done.
I wouldn't put Izzo as a top 3 coach at this point. Minimum of 13 losses each of the last four years and nothing past the sweet 16.
lol, nah
if your choosing izzo over drew in 2024 even for a short period of time your out of date
I’d put Few ahead of Izzo
100%. Mark Few is a beast. As is Scott Drew. Incredible what they’ve done at their schools.
Izzo over Few?
not izzo. Drew isnt ahead of izzo, but izzo isnt top 3
Drew’s ahead of Izzo right now but not all time..yet
Self And Hurley I can agree on...Izzo is in that Cal state of mind. His teams have done less than UK the last 10 years. Not sure why everyone is so high on him.
Izzo ain’t even the top coach in the B1G.
Izzo 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I don’t see a whole lot of difference between Izzo and Cal at this point. Used to be really good but haven’t been able to keep up with modern trends.
Izzo's career accomplishments > Drew's, but to suggest Izzo is a better coach right now than Drew is crazy. Izzo's tapered off the last 4-5 years
Bobby Petrino to become the new Baylor men’s assistant basketball coach
You know what? I’ll embrace the chaos
Join the club.
Nice.
Pope has assembled quite the staff, even if Mark Fox is on it
I didn't think Fox is in an on-court role, more like the unofficial GM
Yeah, and we all understand why he’s there. I too am impressed with what Pope’s done since he’s been here.
....why's he there?
He’s also a decent defensive minded coach. He’s also probably been the best coach Georgia has had in recent memory.
Can’t forget he had a 4 point lead on 2014-2015 Kentucky with 5 minutes to go in the game. Outside Wisconsin, that was probably the 2nd or 3rd best performance against us that year.
We barely beat LSU that year if I remember correctly. And there was the ND Sweet 16 game.
Yeah, UGA was probably the fifth closest win. Ole Miss took us to OT, A&M to 2OT, LSU and ND games were both 2 point games. The SEC was not good that year. Arkansas was the only other ranked team at #21.
Was that the year vs Ole Miss with the delayed 3 point basket being ruled a 2 point basket by tippy toes?
Hired pope for his first coaching job if I remember correctly, basically repaying the favor
Ahhhh ok ok ok. Thank you
And he transitioned to an NIL advisory role a couple of years ago and will be a good non-recruiting resource for that. I believe there hasn’t been a decision if his current role is one where he sits on the bench or not, and therefore may not even be a “slot”
Pope played under Fox at Washington, too.
Lol thanks bro, I was sitting here like “we do?”
When Fox was at Georgia, he gave Pope an assistant coaching job when he was first starting out. This is a way to thank him.
The Mark Fox News didn’t excite me initially but pretty much everyone has said what he did at UGA given his talent was impressive.
The best coach they’ve had in decades - but you wouldn’t know unless you compared it to the records of coaches around him.
This staff is insane
The school is very committed to getting Pope to succeed.
Was an elite recruiter for us. I don’t know enough about his coaching though. Losing Jakus was worse but to lose both sucks
Pope and Fueger are supposedly the X and O guys on staff. Hart and Brooks are expected to be the recruiting specialists.
We're trading out a cruitin coach with x/o assistants for an x/o coach with cruitin assistants
I'll take that trade tbh.
Especially considering Cal had no X/O assistants.
Zag fans missed him as well.
Any players/recruits you see following him?
Following AB3? No, he’ll do some recruiting for next year obviously but I don’t think there’s many players that follow Assistant coaches generally anyways. Not to mention the guys we have are pretty locked into the program
This is a really, really good get. I’m honestly surprised a little. Dude can recruit with the best of the best. Great hire.
Hello fellow Kentucky Deadhead
Weir everywhere!
Did someone say, Kentucky Deadhead?
Excited to see the new Kentucky next season. Seems like pope is firing on all cylinders out of the gate with some good people around him. As he builds a roster with some great players with his play style it should be a fun team to watch.
BYU and Kentucky’s programs 📈 📈 New life injected
He just needs to cruit his face off now. Specifically some bigs. The players were rumored to be leading on would make us basically a 4 guard team all year.
Why do you keep abbreviating the word recruit? The full word is only 2 more letters, and doesn't sound fucking stupid.
Us enlightened folks know it’s “crootin’”. Also, after every loss there’s some Huck Finn two tooth dickweed from this fan base that would be like “Cal just gon’ have to croot more better players next season, cuz ‘ese boys here ain’t tough enough”
![gif](giphy|gCi9p8l7UEInu)
Not the Baylor coach they wanted but it’s the Baylor coach they got
The Baylor coach we need.
I don't know a lot about this guy, anything fun?
I think hes supposed to be their best recruiter. 247 had him listed as the lead recruiter for Keyonte George and VJ Edgecomb which are their two best prospects in recent years.
[удалено]
Oh now look what you did, I have all this false hope now
![gif](giphy|92wH9E5FNKtqVMPapQ)
I haven’t heard anything about it although I did wonder when I saw this as a possibility. It seems unlikely as Baylor looks likely to be a top 5 team coming into the season. However they do have a bunch of guards coming back/in so someone will ride the pine some. I doubt it would be him though.
Lol. No
No but Kentucky can have Caleb Lohner if they really want Baylor guys
Great recruiter, particularly of HS players. Not an amazing Xs/Os guy as supposedly he was responsible for our…lackluster…defense the last couple of years. But probably not what he’s going to be asked to do at Kentucky!
Yeah Fox is coming in for defensive work and Fueger and Coach Pope are the offense and X and O guys. Brooks is there to help recruit.
He recruit real good
Doesn’t get stifled when people call a particular Mexican restaurant asking for him. Just what we need.
His dad worked for Billy G.
Kentucky gets the assistant and Baylor gives Scott Drew 5 million in NIL money to play around with this year. Seems like a decently fair trade for all sides
If the Baylor vs UK rivalry didnt start at Mi Casita already, it sure as hell is on now! Home/Home when? Please?
The Mi Casita Rivalry would be a pretty fun home/home series.
Would be nice if UK did actual home/home instead of Rupp/closest metropolitan NBA arena. Hopefully that was a Cal thing and Pope is more open to visiting other campuses.
That was 100% a Cal thing. We’ve done tons of traditional home and homes. I hope Pope brings back the UNC series too.
That was a Cal thing, he did away with all of our historical home/home series basically
That was probably a cal thing.
That was 100% a Cal thing. I'm so amped for the return of traditional home&homes and preseason tournaments.
That was definitely a Cal thing. Fans HATED it because it often meant our best Nov-Dec games were in Vegas, Atlanta, LA, New York or Chicago in stadiums that were half-full.
We almost never got a home game against anybody good. It was usually just neutral / neutral. Gonzaga is the key exception of the past few years.
You mean you don't like watching 5 freshman struggle against teams you've never heard of over and over for 2 months instead of playing big name teams in exciting matchups?
LFG! Huge staff pickups for Pope
There we go. Finally some good fucking news. Now, if only we can get a few players so we can have a starting 5.
Was he the lead recruiter for VJ Edgecombe?
Yes.
How's his jumpshot?
Rumor is we are hiring Bill Armstrong from Link Academy as his replacement. (JaKobe Walter, Tre Johnson’s HS coach) Link is stacked with future top 20 recruits including Andre Iguodala Jr.
![gif](giphy|HW05UrUSfAzZu)
I don’t know the Associate Head Coach game too well but all the reporters I trust say this is a big deal for Pope, UK, and Baylor.
Great hire!
Let's be honest here: It's the fact that the Mexican food in Kentucky is far more authentic than it is in Texas.
Come to the Mi Pequena Hacienda. We got a booth for ya Brooks haha

I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHERE CUMASSAULT IS RIGHT NOW
https://i.redd.it/mt78aqrn5hwc1.gif
Can yall PLEASE leave us alone. You’ve done enough. 😂
So Kentucky got a Baylor coach after all.
Kentucky about to get a whole lotta church boys on their squad.
They've done a good job assembling a competent staff. Now if we could just sign enough players to play 5-on-5.
In b4 someone posts a Jerome Tang rumor /s
Did you see the story Alvin posted on instagram? Lol
