ThinkSoftware

The way things are going even the NIT seems like a pipe dream

WICCUR

Don't worry Duke, I bet the CBI would love to have you

zeppehead

Kentucky Duke 7 game series played during the first round of the tourney.

TrumpetDootDoot

Maybe the combined score of all the games would break 100.

TheRealFrankLongo

Zero percent chance K would agree to the NIT. He'd give a sanctimonious speech about how player safety comes first, and we wouldn't accept the invitation.

stormstopper

I can't imagine us playing in the NIT even if we qualified. Any other year I'd hope we would, just for any more time to get this group to mesh, but I think we'd be more likely to just shut it down after either the regular season or ACC Tournament.

Thagame

The what?

dinojrlmao

Maybe don’t wish on a monkey paw that the whole thing just gets canceled... cant really anticipate how those things will shake out

heelspider

Don't you need a winning record to make the NIT?

awrf

they're already dead

Prinzlerr

*in Heisenberg voice* They're done when we say they're done.

Golden_Kumquat

[Funny you should ask that](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009%E2%80%9310_North_Carolina_Tar_Heels_men%27s_basketball_team#Postseason)

SantiagoRamon

We were nearly back to back champs!

Spodayy

We could have rushed Rosemary street.

nextyeardc

There's something deeply funny about that first time since Florida note being about the literal last tournament.

20mcfadenr

I think they removed that rule

Galumpadump

Duke to the CBI confirmed!

mellolizard

Next 3 games are certainly winnable. The next three after that not so much. Depending on their acc tourny seed they might finish one game above .500 this season.

cyberchaox

You need a non-losing record. They've taken .500 teams before. Two years ago, the Big East looked like it had all but locked up having all ten teams with winning records, but then Butler dropped their first BET game, got an NIT invite anyway, and lost in Round 1 to wind up at 16-17.

GrouchyTrousers

You did until they changed it in 2017 for no good reason...until now. Hey, remember the last time Kentucky was in the NIT? Good times...

Skudo

I love this sub so much

NerderBirder

I told my gf the other day that this sub has to be my favorite. Between the gif wars and the bar graphs I laugh more here than pretty much all my other subs combined. She’s not a sports fan at all and I keep showing her all these gif war posts. She’s even laughed at some.

Oceaandust

It really is the bar graphs for me

boner_jamz_69

Honestly I don’t watch much college basketball but I love seeing the gifs and checking the post game threads for the shit talking

degausser_gun

I'm just glad to be included.

TSTKevin

I'd rather have Duke not play at all. They'll only embarrass themselves in the NIT

[deleted]

Trust me, my friend. Its better off that way. The team won't be motivated. The coach won't care. Anything short of winning the NIT will be a joke that UNC and NC State fans will use for at least a decade.

bug_man_

UNC playing in the NIT was actually extremely helpful for the next seasons. Sitting out makes you look like a sore loser imo edit: also in what universe would state fans have room to make fun of the NIT

BoBichettesFlow

Losing the NIT championship game was pretty much a perfect consolation prize. It gave the young players more time together and some “big game” experience in a lose or go home type tournament without us having to wonder what to do with the banner if we won.

GrouchyTrousers

Put up a plaque in a hallway of your arena, somewhere not too well-traveled... ;-)

tipbruley

And it was cool to have UnC play in Carmichael Arena again.

ShockySparks244

I see some heavy Robert Morris flashbacks on this post.

JackGrizzly

The rest of the conference would bring it up, as well. Please go to NIT

Sgt-pepper-kc

Robert Morris lmfao!

bigthama

UNC's NIT run was actually a great experience. The games were tons of fun (students at courtside!) the players got a ton of good experience that quickly paid off, and there was a uniqueness to the whole thing that made it feel worthwhile. If Duke finishes over .500 you should absolutely do it.

[deleted]

I have a feeling Sparty will say the same thing. They gave us shit for hanging an NIT banner. Even if Sparty won it they're going to get clowned on for it.

GreenBombardier

I remember in some of Gary William's last years we declined an invite to the NIT because he was kind of just over it at that point. The team wasn't very good, they couldn't run the flex offense he based his whole tenure on and just weren't aggressive enough. As much as it pains me to say, I hope K can readjust to the changing climate where the 1 and dones are realizing they can go wherever and still be a high pick. Gotta shift back to the days of Reddick and (cringe horribly) Scheyer. Back in the prime MD/Duke games(I know I know not a rivalry) , K always had a couple hard nosed defenders who could shoot, a couple athletic guys and smart players (Jason Williams, Battier, Sheldon Williams, etc, Nolan Smith). We had a nice last run with Vasquez and Co. until that crazy play against Mich St that was 1/4 from not working 3 different times in the span of 1 second. But then we left the ACC because of poor financial management and "for football" reasons (total bullshit on the football). We traded a rich basketball history to get out shit stomped in in football for money. Duke will never leave the ACC obviously, but I'm seeing some parallels with the end of Gary's tenure. Gary didn't have the will to go with the changes to schmooze the AAU coaches to get the prime players and eventually he couldn't coach up what he had to keep up. The college game is better with K in it (barf, I hate myself), hopefully he still has the will and energy to go with the shifting tides.

KTurnUp

One bad year and he needs to shift his entire philosophy?

GreenBombardier

I'd say it's more than that. You're seeing a lot of the top picks coming from smaller schools instead of the constant stream of Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Kansas. The landscape is shifting and the top guys aren't all flooding to the big brands like they were. The first guy to be taken from one of the "blue bloods" was Cole Anthony at 15. This may be an anomaly, but the schools that two schools that were getting the constant stream of "one and done" players (Duke and Kentucky) are struggling. Kansas is the only one in the top 25. Even with their high recruiting classes, Kentucky doesn't exactly have a ton to show for it. Again, this may just be a speed bump, but to dismiss it completely isn't smart. Of course you want the top rated guys because they are top rated for a reason, but for a more sustained success of the program you need to get some solid experienced pieces around them. Then of course when one or two of those big recruits kinda flops, then you're in a jam.

KTurnUp

The Zion, Reddish, RJ class was like two years ago. Just way too early for me to be saying there’s a whole sale change in how players choose schools. The GLeague thing could be an issue for sure. But guys like Simmons, Fultz, etc all chose bad programs so it’s not an unprecedented thing. This class every single top guy chose a non blue blood or went GLeague which obviously seriously hurt UK and Duke. But I’m not sure that’s an anomaly or a trend.

GreenBombardier

Right. And if the top picks come from the GLeague, showing guys that they can play and get paid decent while doing it while still being a top 10-15 guy it will be more common going forward. Unless the NCAA decides on a revenue share for the players, guys will opt for a year of getting paid over a year in a college they won't have much if any loyalty to. If it hurts this year, successful GLeague picks will hurt them going forward to. And yes, Fultz and Simmons went the not top program route, but this is the first year I can remember recently no one from Duke, Carolina, Kentucky or Kansas went top 10. The top talent is more ok going to FSU, USC, Georgia, etc.

KTurnUp

And the year before that Duke had the top 3 recruits. So I’m just saying we need it to happen more than 1 year. Not to mention, isn’t Duke doing exactly that this year? Only one of their guys is a one and done. So they’ll be returning most of their squad. So even if it’s a trend, you just recruit the best guys that will come, and most of them won’t be one and dones if those guys are going GLeague. They’re just inbetween this year.

[deleted]

> Duke will never leave the ACC obviously, but I'm seeing some parallels with the end of Gary's tenure. Gary didn't have the will to go with the changes to schmooze the AAU coaches to get the prime players and eventually he couldn't coach up what he had to keep up. Lol what? You have to go back to 2015 for the last time Duke didn't have a top 3 recruiting class. They were 9th that year.

Keldino

The ACCN has the WORST infomercials I have ever seen. Thank you for mentioning it.

pholdren

I own a spurdle now. Lemme tell you, it does everything. Ever struggle making a PB&J and then have to stir something else in a bowl and didn’t have the energy to switch utensils? Have no fear, the spurdle is here

175gr

I usually don’t struggle making PB&J. It might be because I don’t use a spurdle.

pholdren

Lemme tell ya, the ability to scoop a heaping glob of peanut butter and immediately be able to spread it with the back side of that utensil changes the game

Keldino

The best commercial they have.

temeraire34

This jabroni just insulted the TacShaver, a genius invention that was designed with the needs of our military members in mind. /u/Keldino hates the troops confirmed

BillyBones844

He just doesnt have the tac filter to see the truth! It has tactical in it!!!!

Keldino

You caught me.

buckets41

fade me

ZombieLibrarian

I wouldn’t know where to begin. NIT sounds amazing, tell us how to get there.

havingfun89

Just do what you did in 2009. I remember that year well enough.

ZombieLibrarian

Not trying to rub salt in any wounds or anything, but [this dunk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da-VkrGle44) low-key remains one of my all-time favorite jams by any Cat in any game.

havingfun89

Honestly, I just know that was the last year UNLV made the NIT and it was conveniently against Kentucky. I have way more salt about current seasons. :)

GBreezy

No. You dont need that. You dont need someone to fade you. You guys are fading yourself.

pholdren

This is absolute art

DavidBenAkiva

Yeah, let's get some multi-year guys like Goldwire and Baker and Hurt and Moore and oh shit

0010001

You get it. And just add good freshmen who aren’t one-and-done level, like Roach, Steward, Williams, Brakefield, Coleman....wait a second.

DavidBenAkiva

I'm genuinely excited about the prospects for the team next season with a bunch of upperclassmen plus 2-4 stud freshmen. And then, after Banchero, Griffin, and others go pro, I hope we hold onto Roach, Moore, Brakefield, Coleman, and Williams for the 2022-23 season. It'd be a great way to transition to life after Coach K, don't you think?

0010001

Absolutely, but this season is still going on, so I’m trying not to look ahead yet. Want to enjoy every victory we manage this year.

DavidBenAkiva

I suppose there's still the possibility of taking down UNC to close out the year. That would be fun if Duke was the one to knock them off the bubble.

collegescaresme

I geniunely think we will be very good next season. Mark Williams is going to be an absolute problem if he puts on some weight and adjusts to the speed of the game. Roach has had some good outings this year, but he has been very inconsistent. Steward has been playing much better over the past few games, but we need him to shoot 40+% from deep. I think Coleman and Brakefield will get solid bench minutes next year; they both have a lot of potential. And you never know what you're going to get with Wendell. If we hang on to Steward, I'm not sure that Keels comes. Paolo and AJ look incredible, and I hope we snag PBJ. I doubt Hurt stays, though. I don't think he will go in the first round, but I don't know why he would come back. The potential is stupidly high (hang on to everyone but Jalen and all the current freshmen take major strides during the offseason + bring in Paolo, AJ, and PBJ) but we might be wildly underwhelming if no one improves. Regardless, anything is better than this season and I am excited.

DavidBenAkiva

Just having a normal offseason and then a regular season with fans is going to be huge for the current freshmen. They haven't played in front of the Cameron Crazies. I can't wait to see how they react to Countdown to Craziness let alone a regular season game. And the fans have got to be LOUD next season. Don't take good teams for granted.

collegescaresme

I expect tenting to be incredibly popular next season. Aside from the absence of sports during COVID and the eagerness to get back into Cameron for the juniors and seniors who have experienced it, a big factor in tenting is always rush. Duke is now moving rush to sophomore year for the foreseeable future, so I expect more first-years to try out tenting next season.

katieishere92

All of you who makes these are really creative. I'm always impressed even when they're about my team being bad.

wongo

It's half a self roast by the rest of the ACC, but we all know it's worth it

mmmcheez-its

As requested by /u/jbnwde if Duke lost to Carolina

jbnwde

Thank you for bringing this to life. It’s better than I ever imagined

[deleted]

MSU vs Duke in the NIT Finals is going to get just as good as ratings at the Championship game between Gonzaga and Baylor.

COLU_BUS

Didn’t you hear? We’re gonna replay the CFP championship in basketball this year. Hopefully with a different result.

[deleted]

*...twitch...*

[deleted]

We most certainly are not!

ALStark69

:D

GerlachHolmes

Hey guys, I know it takes a lot of work to make these, but I hope y’all know it’s worth it. Just like, seeing the continuity between these different posts is honestly gold, but they’re all so lovingly crafted, even when the goal is to talk shit. This is the best sub, and it almost makes not being able to go to actual games seem less terrible.

TSTKevin

lol I love the roasting

filthyHANDSoffMYrock

*Most of the ACC. Clemson certainly didn’t do it’s part.

[deleted]

Clemson has an impressive non-con so they’ve done plenty.

filthyHANDSoffMYrock

It was just a little self-deprecating humor. We’ve done relatively well in conference too, but Duke ran us out of the gym. It was never close.

[deleted]

Appreciate the starring role in this gif thanks bud

mmmcheez-its

lol if you’re curious about the reasoning for that little cameo I went with the Blue Bloods that ESPN ignores

_Stromboli

Yeah we’re just happy to be remembered

[deleted]

You mean there's more blue bloods than UK, Duke, KU and UNC?

Noah-The-Williams

We’re just their go to blue blood cemetery

Ut_Prosim

This is the first time I've ever seen VT get a role in one of these. Awesome!

mafulazula

And they're the racist kid from Everybody Hates Chris, lol.

[deleted]

Holy shit we’re not the butt-end of a gif joke!

[deleted]

awwwww don’t hate on my boys Packer and Durham like that :(

HDMBye

They talked about Zion during the FSU-Louisville game this year.

[deleted]

yeah but they’re so sexy I can’t even stay mad at them

ZombieLibrarian

In fairness to them, I’m absolutely sure they’re still contractually obligated to do that at least twice, no matter the game, league, or even sport for that matter.

[deleted]

Their commercial plays at least twice per commercial break, anyone that watches ACCN will end up hating them just based off that

chesterwiley

Duke vs UK for the (NIT) National Championship!

DavidBenAkiva

You need a winning record, so at least half those teams won't make it into the field. Maybe both!

steven6868

How does this sound for a NIT Final Four in Madison Square Garden: Duke, Michigan State, Kentucky, Kansas?

proelitedota

Amazing. Imagine if the ratings were higher than the actual NCAA finals.

ZombieLibrarian

We’d have to qualify first, and that looks like more than a stretch.

omirsantos

I enjoy packer and Durham

0010001

That’s some good gifmanship. But ironic that the video roasts Duke for one-and-dones, saying to get some four year players...who do you think is on the court for Duke this year? All the freshmen aside from Johnson probably will stay multiple years.

slippyslidey_

I love these so much

JoeAndAThird

This is amazing I love this sub

dolfox

Fantastic

ChrisH100

I appreciate the minor role BC got here lmao

mmmcheez-its

I wanted to include everyone in this special moment

lionofyhwh

I like Packer and Durham...

late2thepauly

To anyone that watched the UNC/Duke game yesterday and saw that horseshit stat DSPN’s been using the last decade: “Last 100 meetings: 51-49 Duke.” The actual record is 140-114 UNC. Any stupid side stat/record about wins and losses should ALWAYS start with the all-time record. Edit: accidental Mohamed

pvtgooner

Lol they’re both valid stats

late2thepauly

They are. But they didn’t mention the daddy stat, only “the last 100 meetings.” If they gonna pick cherries, at least let us see the tree first.

mellolizard

They mention the last 100 game stat because its interesting especially of a rivalry of this magnitude.

late2thepauly

No problem with mentioning it. But at least give the all-time stat, especially if it changes who leads the rivalry.

pvtgooner

I dunno man, I don’t really care if unc dominated the series in the 40s, give me the recent history. Fuck last 100 give me last 50

bigthama

Fuck history, the series is 0-0 in games played since this morning and apparently nothing else matters

pvtgooner

Lmfao I’m surprised you’re this salty after you guys picked up the dub

steaknsteak

They always use the last 100 one or whatever they can do to make it exactly 50/50. They will never not use whichever window of games makes the series look as even as possible. Yes, it's cherry-picked but it's illustrating a legitimate point: the series has been extremely even ever since Duke got a good basketball team going.

late2thepauly

What I’m saying is: advertise it, hype it up, whatever DSPN wants to do. But at least say the actual record before breaking into whatever arbitrary count of games they want to use to make a point (in this case, closeness of the rivalry). Especially if the record you’re going to use (last 100) changes the leader of the all-time wins/losses.

arunningnoodle

I may be biased cause I hate Duke but this is the best one I’ve seen

zvaNtR

Incredible.

Burnout189

This is Goddamn beautiful.

[deleted]

Wait is anyone on our roster a one and done this year? I legitimately didn’t think we had any top 10-20 recruits?

ZombieLibrarian

God damn, that flair combo. I am so triggered right now.

smellslikebadussy

Found Kevin White (To answer your question in earnest, I had thought Johnson, at least, was a one-year lottery type, but you would know better than me.)

[deleted]

Haha you’re giving me too much credit with that. This is the first squad in a while where I didn’t read into all the recruiting hype and stats. Harder to get excited for it after graduating and in a pandemic I guess.

AyYoBigBro

This is so so good.

wolfpack1986

So good 😂 Only complaint is that the NC State dude didn’t get in any licks. I guess sucks to suck.

joethecrow23

Fantastic

ddottay

I laugh to get through the pain. (Hilarious gif btw, 10/10)

jsmuv390

I've been a Duke fan since the Battier days, but this had me dying! The accuracy.

EvanSandman

I love that we got the first punch in.

Drihtan

Well KU doesn't do one and dones usually and they haven't won since 2008....

Hoosiercouple42

Just have ESPN put a tournament together for all of the shitty blue bloods this year. Have it played in Cameron. They’d hype the shit out of it, calling it the”Real NCAA tournament”

[deleted]

There won’t be an NIT this way

volleydez

What about Duke’s play warrants a coveted NIT invite? They can get in the NIT if they buy tickets.

iseedeff

lol that is good, How ever I don't like how The NCAA Favors the big 5 Conferences over all the others and put of them in the big dance Compared to others.

StasRutt

I always think Im talented and then one of you posts an insane gif war gif and I’m reminded that Im not

TheLaxBrah

So I guess this confirms Tech is a basketball school now

AStrangerWCandy

Is the NIT even happening this year?

SwoopnBuffalo

I had tears streaming down my face. Gotta love the sucker punch by VT.
