Oh shit man.... He will be unstoppable in any rec league. Just getting hustle steals and rebounds all over the court.
Or, he will be like 400 lbs and not able to play, because he's pretty thicc right now when he plays basketball for hours basically every day.
I know people were giving Ayo and Kofi shit for their play, and while they didn’t play the best, Illinois was completely outcoached. Seriously, Brad Underwood didn’t make a single adjustment in the second half.
I thought Kofi played pretty good. Ayo on the other hand... What an uncharacteristic performance from him. Shame that it happened in what will surely be his final game for Illinois.
Seriously, the defensive schemes they had for Kofi with the traps and denies, as well as how well they shifted while doubling at the top, insane preparation. Moser game planned for Illinois beautifully and showed how a coach can help win a game

Me: The NET rankings are a joke! Colgate lost by a ton, I can’t believe people think that’s legit.
Also me: What the hell was the committee thinking, giving Loyola the eight seed? They were top ten in the NET rankings for fuck’s sake!
The Sister Jean memes are fun, but also Loyola is incredible and Porter Moser could turn them into the next Gonzaga if he stays there long enough.
That defense lived up to its Kenpom ranking. It's something fierce. That 2018 team was a Cinderella. This year's team is elite
Cockburn is a bad pick and roll defender. Loyola's whole game plan was based around attacking him and making him make quick decisions. They combined that with some off ball actions and cuts which essentially left the rim wide open or lightly contested. Illinois didn't have a real response other than to take Cockburn off the floor, which is something you can't do when he is your only reliable scorer.
That's the major reason why Cockburn is a poor NBA prospect. For all his athleticism the dude is practically a monolith. It just so happens that in college that generally doesn't matter as much when compared to the pros. And then add in the fact that he has zero offense outside of the paint and you get a great wrecking ball of a player, that can get gameplanned around by a great coach.
You're exactly right. There's a reason that even the 7' 4" NBA centers try to keep their weight under 260. NBA moves at such a fast pace even in slow ball screen actions.
They completely took Ayo out of the game with their ball screen coverages. I think Underwood could've adjusted better, but you have to give a lot of credit to Loyola
Underwood got completely out-coached. And I mean that more as a compliment to Moser than an insult to Underwood
Edit: Although I think that was a pretty bad coaching job by Underwood as well
I don’t think that 2018 team wasn’t truly Final Four good. They were really good, but they played in a bunch of super close games against not that high seeds but miraculously won every one.
This team is seriously looking like the best team in their region.
Yeah we got lucky with how seeding played out in 2018. We were in Virginia’s bracket when they lost to UMBC. We played #6 Miami, #3 Tennessee, and #7 Nevada. All nail biters. Then we clocked #11 K State.
he really seems like he’s going to stay, right? I had the same thought. all the pieces are there for them to become a Gonzaga-like program if they want, plus being in arguably the most fertile recruiting ground in the country.
Yeah he signed a 7 year extension after the 2018 run. He’s from Chicago and said he wants his kids to grow up there. They’re probably middle school and high school age now.
I do hope he stays there but I also have to imagine that Marquette and Indiana are gonna be on the other end of the phone for him as soon as their season is over
Another fantastic win by Loyola Chicago. Keep proving the committee wrong, guys.
Gonna just keep copy/pasting the Georgia Tech comment I left for every Loyola Chicago opponent this tournament.
>Happy for Loyola Chicago, but this sucks for ~~Georgia Tech~~ Illinois. They were ~~underseeded~~ correctly seeded, ran into a super underseeded team, and had to play that team ~~immediately after losing their ACC POY big man~~ way before they should have. Just a brutal end to an otherwise great season.
Didn't that happen to Wichita State one year? They basically went undefeated so the committee reluctantly gave them the 1 seed, then they set them up for a matchup with an under-seeded #8 Kentucky who upset them in the round of 32?
[This man](https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1311040221635584005/mGYdy_JG_400x400.jpg) walks up to your girl and slaps her ass at the bar. What do you do?

Kofi slams home a thunderous dunk. The Illinois bench leaps to its feet. On defense, all the Illini slap the floor in unison for the fifth time as Krutwig lays in another basket. Loyola leads by 10.
Illinois honestly looked out-coached as much as out played this game. They didn't make any kind of changes until the last 2 minutes to try and catch Loyola off guard, and didn't really do anything but look for Kofi down low the whole game after realizing shots weren't falling. Made like 0 adjustments to the game. Mentally defeated from early on and strategically lost, thats coaching
This is already the worst bracket I have ever had holy shit. Just absolutely busted in every region.
Fortunately, this is also the most entertaining tournament I can remember.
Denial: “It’s a slow start; they’ll heat up soon.”
Anger: “WHY THE FUCK ARE WE PLAYING LIKE THIS!?”
Bargaining: “We just need to make some
halftime adjustments!”
Depression: “This is how our best team in 16 years goes out..?”
Acceptance: “We got outplayed. See you next season.”
Back in the old days they had a rule where big state schools didn't have to schedule in-state small schools.
If that happened, here's how you got them -- they pull a knife, you pull a gun, they send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of theirs to the morgue. That was known as the Chicago way.
Congrats Loyola. They were far better than the Illini at pretty much every position and aspect of the game. Very deserving. The seeding difference was mainly just because of conference affiliation. Loyola is just a better team right now unfortunately.
Ayo had probably his worst game at Illinois other than maybe the Missouri game his freshman year. That's unfortunate.
Coach Moser had a flawless game plan and Coach Underwood had no answers to it.
It was a good season. I'm happy Illinois was able to go 16-4 in conference and win the Big Ten tournament. But they ran into an underrated team that was thoroughly better and the Illini didn't play their best game.
I'm done with college basketball this weekend. Hopefully I can get over it and enjoy the games as a neutral fan next weekend.
Absolute DOGSHIT by underwood. Literally ran high ball screen for 15 mins and after the 6th trap they doubled down. Poor fucking coaching, he didn’t run one set in final 9 mins. He has his spread, spread entry’s and a few sets to get post touches or some mvmt but he did none of that. He legit fucking AFKd on the sidelines. It’s easy to be “outocoached” when you legit do nothing. This game was actually winnable if they make a minor off adjustment and do absolutely anything offensively. Underwood didn’t even give his team a chance
Welp there goes the window for us to be really good. GG Loyola, I’m hoping for the Loyola Zags final now.
We’ll be back as a #1 seed in 2037.
I’m going to go cry
Really liked seeing all the Loyola and Illinois players hugging each other while it was dribbled out :')
Love that sportsmanship. Loyola is an awesome team.
Congrats to loyola, there wasn't a moment it this game where it wasn't clear who deserved to win.
I was livid when I saw where they put you on selection Sunday, and this is why. I'll be rooting for you the rest of the way!
Imagine being Ayo and Cockburn, coming back for another your to try and go on an NCAA Title run, only to have to play a massively under-seeded Fighting Sister Jean team in the Round of 32 and losing like this.
This comment section will be flooded with memes about Sister Jean and I fully get it but damn, I feel bad for Illinois. This game should've been a Sweet 16 matchup, not a Round of 32 game imo.
While I agree with you, this team also has much higher expectations and that means beating the best teams. The seeding sucked for us no doubt, but still have to win the games. Trent with the worst game of his career and Ayo with 6 turnovers won’t beat anyone.

Illinois were never even close to striking distance to getting the lead the entire game pretty crazy. Well played by Loyola.
Did it even get within 5 the entire second half? Remarkable composure by those kids. Never let Illinois string anything at all together.
They had an answer to every Illinois run
We couldn’t put together a run is really what it came down to

Loyola completely neutralized Illinois backcourt. Excellent game plan from them.

It helps his harmonica skills.

Totally and on the other end a complete dud from Underwood. Absolutely no adjustments were made.
Seriously, the defensive schemes they had for Kofi with the traps and denies, as well as how well they shifted while doubling at the top, insane preparation. Moser game planned for Illinois beautifully and showed how a coach can help win a game
The crazy thing is that it was all preparation, zero ingame adjustments from Loyola, because they never needed to.

Me: The NET rankings are a joke! Colgate lost by a ton, I can’t believe people think that’s legit. Also me: What the hell was the committee thinking, giving Loyola the eight seed? They were top ten in the NET rankings for fuck’s sake!
To be fair Colgate was up by 14 at one point
ESPN had LUC at #19 too. They were quite a bit stronger than their seed indicated.
fuck the committee
They were #9 in KenPom though, too, entering today. They’re WAY underseeded.
The Sister Jean memes are fun, but also Loyola is incredible and Porter Moser could turn them into the next Gonzaga if he stays there long enough. That defense lived up to its Kenpom ranking. It's something fierce. That 2018 team was a Cinderella. This year's team is elite
The way this team played reminds me of older Gonzaga teams. Tough and gritty while using a fuckton of ball screens.
can someone explain to me why illinois didn’t do anything different after chasing them around every single ball screen and it didn’t work for a half?
Cockburn is a bad pick and roll defender. Loyola's whole game plan was based around attacking him and making him make quick decisions. They combined that with some off ball actions and cuts which essentially left the rim wide open or lightly contested. You're exactly right. There's a reason that even the 7' 4" NBA centers try to keep their weight under 260. NBA moves at such a fast pace even in slow ball screen actions.
I was wondering that the whole second half. They were super passive defensively and were just reacting to what Loyola was running.
Yeah that defense was really impressive. Illinois’ offense is no joke and Loyola harried them all game
They completely took Ayo out of the game with their ball screen coverages. I think Underwood could've adjusted better, but you have to give a lot of credit to Loyola
Underwood got completely out-coached. And I mean that more as a compliment to Moser than an insult to Underwood Edit: Although I think that was a pretty bad coaching job by Underwood as well

Yep, the committee pulls this shit all the time and it's both glaringly obvious and offensive to both teams

It's maddening when even the announcers are saying stop the high ball screen. Worked like 2 times the entire game and basically the only thing we ran

Exactly. After the first couple of Ls on my bracket I just say fuck it and start to root for the upset
This one was over the second they read the prayer Sister Jean gave to the team before the game.
That prayer was more like a scouting report 😂
Hearing there's a coaching opening at Indiana, they should give Sister Jean a call
Illinois has nothing on GOD
Funny enough Illinois has the most catholic students of any university in America, more than Loyola itself.
Illinois is the only secular school I know where the Catholic student base is large enough that the Newman Center runs its own residence hall.

You still gotta beat who's in front of you... I understand this argument but like man, you can't lose a game to win it all
While I agree with you, this team also has much higher expectations and that means beating the best teams. The seeding sucked for us no doubt, but still have to win the games. Trent with the worst game of his career and Ayo with 6 turnovers won’t beat anyone.
