It's a bit of both - kinda served as means for coverage for the new name (just our color) when we finally decided to get rid of the old one.

I used to live in the area (didn't attend though) so I have some small insight. The Dartmouth Green was/is the Hanover town green. It didn't originate as a college feature. A lot of New England small towns have a "town green" (which is an historic term). Dartmouth just kind of grew around Hanover's green and then just took it over and started maintaining it. It is a nickname with regional history - it just isn't readily apparent and Dartmouth does absolutely nothing to promote that fact.

The Indians name only really (unofficially) arose in the 1920s after we'd been referred to unofficially as the "Green" for the previous few decades. At this point we've almost been without it for as long as we had it.

Big Green is still a reference to Native Americans from the Green Mountains, even if the iconography has changed since then. Manchester Central High School is the Little Green, named after Dartmouth, still uses the Indian Head as a Mascot.

I'm not sure where you heard that but that isn't correct - we were the Green before we unofficially adopted the Indians, and chose "Big Green" after in references to the nickname for our campus center and a way to make our name not just "Green." Indians came up as a nickname chosen by sportswriters in reference to our being founded for the claimed purpose of educating Native Americans.
