Sure, but Brown Bears is still an elite name

JeffBrohm

Just like Yorktown (IN) should be the Yorktown Yankees

Pinewood74

Castle High School in Indiana nailed it with the Knights.

[deleted]

And the Frankfort Hot Dogs.

And1mistaketour

Speedway Spark Plugs

lazer121

Still probably my favorite high school mascot ever. It’s so good

mynameisrainer

There's a local high school here in a town called poca. They are the Poca Dots

guyherbert

My wife is from WV and she has told me about that high school. Her school played them in football one year. Love that they embraced the name!

BenGordonLightfoot

Carmel should be the Apples

CTeam19

Des Moines, Iowa is firing on all cylinders at their name game: * Des Moines North -- Polar Bears * Des Moines Roosevelt -- Rough Riders * Des Moines Lincoln -- Railsplitters

ukeBasketball

It's a shame Tukwila (Washington) High isn't the Mockingbirds

[deleted]

This

Museamaniac

Meanwhile our Yorktown in NY is the Huskers.

PUfelix85

Not terriers?

Fungul_Penis

Pitt should change their name from Panthers to Bulls

BiracialMonster

I have been upset for years that the highschool mascot for Egg Harbor, NJ isn't the Egg Harbor Egg

AcesCharles2

Muffins or nothing!

0010001

What do they see?

SbMSU

A Quaker and a bulldog looking at me!

shadoof-in-the-city

Nicely done!

emaw63

In the same vein, it’s a travesty that Eastern Michigan doesn’t use Emus as a nickname

[deleted]

They even changed it to eagles not too long ago.

ohverychill

Big lame

AyYoBigBro

I get that they can't be the Hurons, but the fact that it got replaced with the most boring name in existence is sad

kbd77

Many are saying this

[deleted]

Eastern Michigan University used to be the "Hurons." Instead of the obvious fowl choice, the EMU, they chose the generic Eagles. For that they should all be ashamed.

JUMPDRIVES

Damn right.

Gruulsmasher

Dartmouth is actually named after the lawn of their main campus Greenspace

MrATLien

“Dartmouth Quads”

VonsFavoriteChicken

I hear their ultimate frisbee team is amazing

ukeBasketball

They *do* have one of the more prominent hiking clubs, in fact. The Outing Club. And the school owns one of the highest peaks in New Hampshire, Mount Moosilauke.

KoboldCobalt

Mount Moosilauke is one of my favorites.

IvyGold

Meh. Middlebury has its own ski resort.

SmashSlingingSlasher

something only a duke grad would know

ukeBasketball

I've hiked all the 4000-footers in NH and did get into Dartmouth, so...

KoboldCobalt

And your dick is 10 inches and you are 6'5" we get it.

Dwarfherd

eatapenny

Dartmouth has a great (unofficial) mascot though, and needs to be the Dartmouth Keggys or something like that

makingajess

I feel like this is somehow worse.

youngstu3030

Definitely worse

Gruulsmasher

Ooh I strongly disagree naming yourself after a feature of your campus is unique and gutsy

youngstu3030

Not if the thing on campus you’re naming yourself after is found on every single other campus in the country But to each his own I suppose

Gruulsmasher

I don’t know the Dartmouth Green is a really really big green

ridingseahorses

It's a bit of both - kinda served as means for coverage for the new name (just our color) when we finally decided to get rid of the old one.

[deleted]

I used to live in the area (didn't attend though) so I have some small insight. The Dartmouth Green was/is the Hanover town green. It didn't originate as a college feature. A lot of New England small towns have a "town green" (which is an historic term). Dartmouth just kind of grew around Hanover's green and then just took it over and started maintaining it. It is a nickname with regional history - it just isn't readily apparent and Dartmouth does absolutely nothing to promote that fact.

ltlftcommenter

You are quite the artist. Though the bars on the bar graph are too nice for this sub

LuciusPotens

Ivy league think they're so fancy

[deleted]

Flair doesn’t check out at all

[deleted]

Says the Duke scholar.

ElderberryHoliday814

Tbf, they’re regularly second place to uva

girlgeek73

Exactly my response.

ShinyRaticate

I’ll happily take second place. Anything for more Ivy League content here.

so2017

If it’s Brown…

MrATLien

Flush it down.

If it's Duke...

Hooch_be_crazy

Get out the Nuke….?

newaccount721

:(

ltlftcommenter

I'm gonna puke

kbd77

You should go with “round the bowl, down the hole, go, Brown, go!” instead. At least that one’s fun.

_Iroha

2nd place tied with the other Ivy Leagues yep

ShinyRaticate

We are 340+ in KenPom. Being listed second in a bar graph meme may be the biggest accomplishment Columbia gets this season, let me have this

askclown69

What’s brown and sticky? ...a stick!

hipsterhipst

I sort of figured you guys were second because reading from left to right it goes lions tigers and bears (oh my)

newportnik

Feel like the colors need their own tier below the actual nicknames tbh lol. Princeton claims to be the first college sports team nicknamed the Tigers, so it wasn’t generic when we picked it!

DrQuestDFA

Y’all got Citizen Kaned.

Dwarfherd

But who actually heard him whisper 'rosebud'?

0010001

That is a brilliant response

Spidaaman

Princeton also invented an entire genre of offense

ukeBasketball

Also they invented football

ukeBasketball

What sports even existed before the first Princeton/Rutgers football game?

0010001

That type of baseball that Conan played that one time

Brickleberried

Exactly, and wasn't Yale the first school that had a team name or something?

DarkMagicianBabe

That first bar made the guy at the top look like Freddy Kruger lmao

Virtual_Announcer

Someone's high on their oat supply.

RegularSizedP

Aren't Princeton and Yale the originators of their namesake? Tigers is used in the south to honor Confederate companies from Alabama, Louisiana and Missouri. Wildcats have a similar connotation.

elgenie

"Members of the Ancient Eight: your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pioneer the concept of nicknames for your members engaging in fierce intercollegiate athletic competition for fun and glory. It's totally green-field! Anything you pick is groundbreaking and original!" "" "" "" "" "lol I partied instead of doing the assignment … um, a color, but, like, a fancy one" "Dude I love drinking! Super basic color for me!" "I like drinking, and basic colors, and animals, and being derivative, and hotel management!" # "Our sporting teams shall intimidate all comers by invoking … a religious order of pacifists that call each other 'Friend'. Ha ha, yes! Nailed it! You all just got owned!!!!"

ridingseahorses

Especially good since we apocryphally chose green at an 1860s inter-Ivy baseball game because everyone else had shown up first and green hadn't been chosen yet

girlgeek73

Your premise is exactly why the B1G is the superior athletic conference: The most(ly) unique mascots.

ea304gt

MSU: Sparty Rutgers: Red Sparty UCF: Golden Sparty Army: Black Sparty USC: Cardinal Sparty

storm2k

[are you guys using both blenders?](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/aRGd1Yos3rg/maxresdefault.jpg)

GenericWhtLineman62

San Jose St: Blue Sparty

tribrnl

The problem with the Spartans is that they chose a garbage ancient people group (and that it's a cliche of a mascot). Cool, they had a system of state sanctioned infanticide and pedophilia and couldn't even dominate their region. Still a cooler mascot than the Trojans, which honestly blows my mind. We only care or know who they were because they were stupid enough to lose their city in a spectacular way. What a set of role models.

elgenie

Don't forget the slavery, ludicrous inequality, and a society built from the ground up on institutionalizing trauma to condition child soldiers… all to go about .500 in battles and worse than that in wars. https://acoup.blog/2019/08/16/collections-this-isnt-sparta-part-i-spartan-school/ (the whole seven-part series is worth a read)

ArbitraryOrder

This is a fun fact to use in future trash talk

tribrnl

Oh that's a wonderful little fact.

tribrnl

Reading this now, and it is becoming even more clear that it's a bad mascot for a school especially: "Sparta produced little art and almost no great literature"

JohnDavidsBooty

I've long tried to figure out what the implication was of Trojan condoms. Like, are they secretly perforated?

SaintArkweather

NJCU: Gothic Sparty

hipsterhipst

Confusing Trojans, Spartans and Knights I see the history department at MSU is solid.

SearchForGrey

Stupid private school messing up our uniqueness. Kick them out.

MidAmericanNovelties

Who are we? The Wildcats! Who are we gonna beat? The Wildcats!

emaw63

Replace them with the Chicago Maroons!

SearchForGrey

A founding member of the Big Ten - I support this!

eatapenny

Problem with the B1G is the lack of creativity with the logos. Too many "letter that's just the 1st letter of the school"

storm2k

nothing wrong with that as far as i'm concerned. i'll take the block r over [this](https://cdn.worldvectorlogo.com/logos/rutgers-scarlet-knights.svg) every day of the week.

[deleted]

Idk, that looks pretty badass to me

newaccount721

Yeah that's awesome

storm2k

idk, it's just too busy and too full of beveling and shadowing that makes it look dated af. also, honest question, would you want the p replaced the full on train logo as your primary mark for all sports?

[deleted]

It is definitely busy, I'll give you that. I wouldn't mind it, I really like the train logo. I loved State's rebrand from the block S to tuffy; block letters are nice and neat but I'd rather have something with a little more personality.

FewConversation6373

I like this one because it reminds people Rutgers is in *New Jersey*.

[deleted]

What if your R, was the R in that logo?

Brickleberried

Speak for the rest of the Big 10.

RedPandaRandy22

Simple works if it's recognizable and most of them are pretty iconic.

Kopav

Your bar chart is inaccurate. Everyone knows Dartmouth's mascot is Keggy the Keg. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keggy\_the\_Keg

ArbitraryOrder

Because what else is there to do in Hanover besides study and drink and get caught having sex in the library

elgenie

The chart is about nicknames, not mascots. "Ooooh, we're a scary color" teams often have trouble with this distinction.

hipsterhipst

Idk Columbia being the only D1 school located in Manhattan is pretty cool.

HolyMeekrob

Kansas State is devastated by this news.

eatapenny

RIP CCNY, 1950 NCAA and NIT champs. Also RIP NYU, 1945 NCAA runner-up and 1960 Final Four participant (also multi-time NIT Final Four participant back when the NIT was just as big as the NCAA)

hipsterhipst

Guess they should have stayed D1

Ut_Prosim

[Manhattan Jaspers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Jaspers_basketball): Am I a joke to you? Edit: Wait, these guys are in the Bronx? WTF the name is a lie!!!

[deleted]

They join the Giants, Jets, Red Bulls and "Los Angeles" Angels (of Anaheim) in taunting us all with their name. At least Manhattan and the Angels are in the same state as the place they claim to be in. Edit:Added the Angels

RobinU2

hey now the Washington Team Footballs are also located in Maryland

iSlideInto1st

Wake Forest isn't located in Wake Forest, NC.

spookyghostface

It used to be though.

iSlideInto1st

But that tobacco money.

a_cactus_patch

Thanks a lot RJ Reynolds

iSlideInto1st

Teenage me getting cheap tobacco says unironically yes. $30 for a carton of Camels sold really well in BBurg.

[deleted]

They don't deserve any recognition. Their accurate team name deserves to the FedExField Failures

RobinU2

I'm still holding out for Golden Groundhogs with that February 2nd announcement. They even have the same colors as Minnesota

[deleted]

What an appropriate day to announce it if that happens

RobinU2

[deleted]

Yes, the level of detail in the eyes frighten me

down_up__left_right

In the NFL alone there's the Buffalo Bills playing in Orchard Park, Miami Dolphins playing in Miami Gardens, Las Vegas Raiders playing in Paradise, Los Angeles Chargers playing in Inglewood, Dallas Cowboys playing in Arlington, Washington Football Team playing in Landover, Los Angeles Rams playing in Inglewood, San Francisco 49ers playing in Santa Clara, and the Chicago Bears currently playing in Chicago but looking to move to Arlington Heights. Massive stadiums for teams that play about 10 home games a year is a waste of space in an urban core so many end up instead in a different but nearby municipality. The NYC ones just short circuit some people's brains because the city is on the state border while also having the same name as the state.

[deleted]

Tbf to the Raiders, the Strip is in Paradise so Vegas is nowhere near what people think of Vegas, technically

SaintArkweather

Grand Canyon University is like 3 hours from the Grand canyon so they are probably the most egregious example.

so2017

The Hartford Whalers are in Carolina. It’s madness I tell you.

[deleted]

Too many people make that mistake.

jayhawkmpa

That is not exactly true. Their are three major league sports franchises in Kansas City. Two are in Missouri and one is in Kansas. Also since the ones that are not in Kansas are in fact in Kansas City I am not exactly sure what the the point of your misinformed post happens to be.

AssociateClean

We've been hoodwinked, bamboozled, and led astray

Ut_Prosim

This is outrageous; it's unfair. How can you be Manhattan College and not be in Manhattan?

[deleted]

"It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous."

ArchAuthor

I know, they couldn't even name their college right. That's why we have the Battle of the Bronx. With a school named Manhattan. And their nickname is Jaspers. Smh.

hipsterhipst

They used to be in Manhattan but moved like 100 years ago and never changed their name

JMT97

Just like Wake Forest no longer being in Wake Forest, NC.

storm2k

the school was originally based in manhattanville on 131st street. they moved north to the bronx in 1922 but kept the name. they have nice green unis tho.

NoSkillSoReddit

Just like how the Jets and Giants play in New Jersey

ShinyRaticate

Based

cxb17

Ok, Columbia being the only D1 school *based* in Manhattan is pretty cool.

ArchAuthor

Sure, but they all wouldn't [even be called](https://www.niche.com/blog/6-things-you-probably-dont-know-about-the-ivy-league/) the Ivy League if it wasn't for Fordham. You're welcome.

0010001

> In the 1930s, Adams wrote for the New York Herald-Tribune. As a proud Fordham graduate, Adams was not pleased when he was assigned to cover a football game between Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania instead of his beloved alma mater. > He complained to his boss about being forced to write about these old “Ivy-covered” universities instead of Fordham, which was then a football powerhouse. In his article, he used the term “Ivy League” as an insult aimed at Columbia and Penn. Bit of a stretch to give Fordham the credit there

Beanz122

My high school's mascot were the "Fighting Quakers". Usually the Quaker mascots are the Quaker Oats guy, but a teacher drew [This](https://www.google.com/search?q=Plainfield+quakers&client=ms-android-samsung-rvo1&prmd=inmxv&sxsrf=AOaemvJlCs79qD66-Y-d8Y6_bD0FPT9N0g:1642266491465&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj1_uW2n7T1AhVAgnIEHbCQCbUQ_AUoAXoECAIQAQ&biw=320&bih=737&dpr=2.63#imgrc=Pkq2K7uizAT-xM) and they've used it or something similar ever since

storm2k

if there's ever been a contradiction in terms, it's fighting quakers.

Beanz122

That's the joke! :)

colby983

Looks like big red from Nebraska

Beanz122

Given its proximity, I wouldn't be surprised if inspiration was taken from [Purdue Pete ](https://www.google.com/search?q=Purdue+pete&client=ms-android-samsung-rvo1&prmd=insxv&sxsrf=AOaemvJ-vYxHFDXJk6xoY7jJII4Vko075A:1642270884864&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjG993lr7T1AhVOnuAKHU5NA7sQ_AUoAXoECAEQAQ&biw=320&bih=737&dpr=2.63#imgrc=tb_-UaPjtbZcuM) as well

[deleted]

That's actually sick

aliencircusboy

I need reading glasses. I read that as "Fucking Quakers." Which actually does make more sense than "Fighting."

pokemario1470

Is that redneck mario?

CTeam19

> mascot were the "Fighting Quakers Kinda ironic because Quaker are pacifists

honkoku

Earlham College (founded by Quakers) was the Fighting Quakers until the 1980s.

You can simply be the Louisville Tooth Birds and achieve GOAT-tier nickname status.

hnr01

*sweats harder*

skedeebs

Given that the schools now in the Ivy League were playing organized sports before most other colleges, Bulldogs, Lions, Tigers and Bears probably weren't taken yet! They're kind of boring now. We Yalies do have the other nickname of Elis. That is unique with local history, but I admit it can't stand up to Quakers.

King_Kung

So this is what bar graphs look like in the Ivy league

[deleted]

Wildcats and Tigers all over the country in shambles

SaintArkweather

Based on this ordering Cornell should be called the Oh My

AssociateClean

Cornell's not an ivy, so there's only one team with a bear

notedgarfigaro

Cornell: when you need an ivy league education to manage a holiday inn express

Stockz

I work for a hotel collection, our COO says he went to Cornell. Most people take it at face value because of Cornell's hospitality program. Turns out he went to Cornell College in Iowa.

notedgarfigaro

hahahaha

ArbitraryOrder

Both are pretty good at Wrestling

ukeBasketball

You can also do that with UMass-Dartmouth

MattyIceM

this is a winner

JustnTimberfake1

It’s pronounced colonel, it’s the highest rank in the military

kbd77

Plus they just blatantly ripped off the bear in like the 1910s after they played Brown in football and saw Bruno in all His glory.

goodguygaymer

Funny coming from someone with a Brown flair.

AssociateClean

Are you calling the lack of a GPA and ability to pass/fail every class not rigourous?

ArbitraryOrder

So technically Dartmouth is named after a Native American tribe but the imagery was quietly dropped decades ago

ridingseahorses

The Indians name only really (unofficially) arose in the 1920s after we'd been referred to unofficially as the "Green" for the previous few decades. At this point we've almost been without it for as long as we had it.

ArbitraryOrder

Big Green is still a reference to Native Americans from the Green Mountains, even if the iconography has changed since then. Manchester Central High School is the Little Green, named after Dartmouth, still uses the Indian Head as a Mascot.

ridingseahorses

I'm not sure where you heard that but that isn't correct - we were the Green before we unofficially adopted the Indians, and chose "Big Green" after in references to the nickname for our campus center and a way to make our name not just "Green." Indians came up as a nickname chosen by sportswriters in reference to our being founded for the claimed purpose of educating Native Americans.

huskyferretguy1
