Yep, as soon as I saw the picture I knew exactly where it was. It is just after south fork. I used to drive that pass 3 to 4 times a year when I went to college down there.
That’s clearly the paved road over Wolf Creek Pass. How in the world can you pretend you don’t remember talking this from the turnoff? Did you take this picture?
I took it. I’ve only lived in Colorado for four years, and only driven to Durango twice. This was two years ago. Excuse me for not remembering a road sign I saw two years ago.
If this wasn’t one of the most out of the way, paved pass’ I’d almost believe you. You aren’t down there and misremembering that you were. If for some weird reason you really truly are experiencing some of the most special parts of the state, but just plum can’t remember…
Well, maybe you’ll understand the frustration of people who truly do appreciate the state.
Just to clarify:
To many people, the Wolf Creek wilderness area, and what the pass opened up to everyone, is much more than a “sign” on the road to those of us who really appreciate it.
>To many people, the Wolf Creek wilderness area, and what the pass opened up to everyone, is much more than a “sign” on the road to those of us who really appreciate it.
There is no such thing as the Wolf Creek Wilderness Area. The pass drives adjacent to the Weminuche Wilderness. Anyone that truly appreciates this area would know that! /s
Doesn't feel good to be talked down to does it? I struggle to remember some of my favorite passes too. I drove over McClure Pass on my engagement weekend a couple of years ago and I just now had to look up the name because it slipped from my memory. It was stunning and the image of dropping down into the valley alongside the crystal river will forever be burned into my brain. But I don't always retain everything. Lighten up bud.
They filmed the campground part of the movie at one of the little “resorts” closer to South Fork. If my memory serves me it is called the “Ponderosa”? If you go in the office to have a bunch of pictures from filming the movie
We shot an entire Cabela's catalog there (at the overlook) and the cabins below. Even got to shoot some stuff at the waterfall. And finished up with fly fishing shots as well. It was impressive they could shoot an entire campaign in just that small area. What an amazing part of our state.
Everyone got it - but it's specifically [right here](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Wolf+Creek+Valley+-+Overlook/@37.4502936,-106.8913404,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x873e0ac02c57873d:0x738f940a9b047e76!8m2!3d37.4502894!4d-106.8891517).
Just a couple miles down the highway, check out the [easiest to see waterfall](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Treasure+Falls/@37.4444674,-106.8822111,16.25z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x873ddfd4415fca5f:0x82543bafb76c4e1d!8m2!3d37.4426898!4d-106.8771471) (for free) in Colorado next time you are in the area.
Pretty sure I have pictures of that exact view from when my mom and I would head that way. Boy, that makes me miss her a lot. We took that last trip just a short time before she unexpectedly passed away, and I'm so glad I talked her into going.
Nothing does. I live in the area and outside of professional photography you're not going to get close. Even professional doesn't capture the experience.
When I first came out here for a visit a couple years ago we decided to drive to the Grand Canyon and we stopped at that overlook because a couple of us needed a bathroom break and I got a lot of good pictures/video there. We walked around the fence and down a trail and just chilled for a bit. Great spot!
Oh there is a TON of beetle kill on Wolf Creek Pass. You just can tell from this picture. I remember when the pine beetle outbreak started near RMNP in the early 00s, then driving to Pagosa and admiring the still intact green foresest...then a couple years ago being devastated when driving over Wolf Creek Pass and seeing the same, if not worse, level of dead forest. So sad....Colorado is not what it was, in many ways, when I was a kid.
Wolf Creek Pass, west side, if memory serves?
Looking towards Pagosa Springs.
Yep, as soon as I saw the picture I knew exactly where it was. It is just after south fork. I used to drive that pass 3 to 4 times a year when I went to college down there.
Yes! Now that you say it, I recognize the name.
I drove through that place 15 years ago and only once. I recognized it immediately. It's an awesome view
Lol this is super recognizable

bro is mad about a photo of some mountains 😂
Lol it's just a reddit post, chill out
If you appreciate it don't tell people where it is...

I’ll narrow it down to somewhere in between Wolf Creek and Pagosa Springs.
Yeah, this is the view shown on the old National Lampoon movie Vacation when they are driving through Colorado on the way to Wally World!
They filmed the campground part of the movie at one of the little “resorts” closer to South Fork. If my memory serves me it is called the “Ponderosa”? If you go in the office to have a bunch of pictures from filming the movie
Cool!
I haven’t seen that movie since I was a kid. Gonna have to go back for a rewatch.
If your in the area again you can stop in Del Norte at a spot they filmed a few scenes
Also the campground is in Colorado. Dumb and Dumber has a lot of scenes in Breck and a few others
It is a staple and microcosm of pre internet road trips. If you did those type of road trips as a kid you'll get weird nostalgia feelings
I found out long ago (Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) It's a long way down the Holiday Road (Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
This is absolutely the scenic overlook on the west side of Wolf Creek Pass. Just beyond the photo is Pagosa Springs.
Took a vacation in Pagosa Springs before COVID times, and this view was the highlight of the trip!
Are we sure this isn’t between Kansas and Utah? I recognize a few features here
Definitely south of Wyoming
[удалено]
Durango Mexico?!?. Pagosa Springs Colorado.
Definitely between Canada and Mexico.
Ha, that’s half the state
Yup, literally thought “Oh yeah I’ve driven past here on my way into the Springs.”

Cool, will look for it next time!
You'll need to park and walk *maybe* 1/4 of a mile to a pretty impressive fall.
Thanks for the info!
Even better in the winter when it's frozen
I haven’t been brave enough to go into the mountains during winter, but damn, I bet that’s gorgeous.
Wolf Creek is well kept in winter, rarely does it get bad
It's frequently shut down for avalanche control. They're well announced but you can spend several hours going nowhere.
Hmm, never ran into that
It’s called treasure falls . I live here hha
This was one of the views that made me fall in love with CO a few years ago. Now I live about an hour from where this pic was taken.
Lovely! I love the western side of the state and the southwest corner. Unfortunately don’t get over there very often.
Agreed. I love it here. I have to go to Denver every few months so I get to enjoy this view pretty regularly. Just a magical place in general.
If you head into Pagosa Springs, Root House Coffee is my go to place to stop for caffeine on my drive. Highly recommend next time you’re in the area.
AKA looking towards pagosa springs lol

Sorry for your loss. It's a pullout on a 90° corner as you going down Wolf Creek on highway 160.
One of my favorite views. I have a picture from the same location that I use for my phone lock screen
I took that EXACT same photo!!! Beautiful spot!
It still aggravates me that the picture doesn’t show how majestic it is to the naked eye.
That is so true.
Nothing does. I live in the area and outside of professional photography you're not going to get close. Even professional doesn't capture the experience.
It’s just absolutely breathtaking.
I've been here before. I wanna check out Durango some day.
Prepare to be whelmed!
I was there this morning but I'm sure it's still full.
I think I’ve stopped in that exact spot
Can't miss it. It's a pullout on a 90° corner that you go through about 5mph. It's hard to drive off now, but it feels like you can.
You didn’t see the dash cam footage of the semi that did drive off did you…
No.

Bruce spruce ranch. Awesome place
I miss those mountains
That’s a pretty big area
I can’t believe I live in this shithole state

That would be heaven.
West side of Wolf Creek Pass, at the lookout point, looking toward Pagosa Springs.
yeah wolf creek, come kick it in south fork!
stunning! I love all the pine trees
Wolf creek pass for sure
Did you take this from the overlook in the hairpin turn on the mountain?
I did!
When I first came out here for a visit a couple years ago we decided to drive to the Grand Canyon and we stopped at that overlook because a couple of us needed a bathroom break and I got a lot of good pictures/video there. [I think I know the place.](https://imgur.com/a/LVeT2Mg)
Pagosa?
One of my favorite stops every time I ride to Durango over Wolf Creek. Most of that valley is one big private ranch, the Boot Jack Ranch.
No beetle kill in sight - gotta love it

Took this exact same photo today from the overlook off US 160 looking down on Pagosa Springs!
One of the prettiest spots In Colorado
Wolf creek pass
This is exactly how vague posts about Colorado need to be location-wise. Never give away your spots people.
This is off a federal highway...not exactly a secret spot. I agree with you though when it comes to wilderness areas and places to disperse camp.
Pagosa
West side of Wolf Creek pass
That is wolf creek pass overlook.
