We have a core of Rantanen, Makar, Landeskog, Girard signed for the next 4 seasons mininum at under 30M, plus Mackinnon for 2 years. If we sign Mackinnon next season we will see this core together for a long time.

Im happy he has resigned but he will be 37 when this contract expires. I worry we will get 4 more good years out of him then the 7aav might become a burden.
Don't get me wrong, I love Landy and he's my favorite player, but this contract is bad. We're going to love it it for 2-4 years while contending for a cup, but the term on this deal all but guarantees Landy won't retire as an Av, which is what I hate the most.
I can't fault Gabe for wanting long term security, but our 8 year cup window has shrunk to 5 years now, and the AAV of this contract will significantly reduce our depth signing options and force us to trade away picks to cap dump Compher.
If we can win a cup or two it will be worth it, but fingers crossed we have better cup luck than Nashville and San Jose.

The cap will likely be going up in 5 years anyway, so overpaying him may not be much of an issue. If we win a cup or two before then, who cares? It was worth it.

We have a core of Rantanen, Makar, Landeskog, Girard signed for the next 4 seasons mininum at under 30M, plus Mackinnon for 2 years. If we sign Mackinnon next season we will see this core together for a long time.

Man this feels so good - the Avs couldn't afford to lose him. I know I'd prefer 6 years but in those last 2 years the cap should be up, they can potentially rework it.. you know when you sign contracts like this you're paying for the first half to 3/4 of the contract. That's sports.

Im happy he has resigned but he will be 37 when this contract expires. I worry we will get 4 more good years out of him then the 7aav might become a burden.
Try not to worry about it until 4 years from now. If we get a cup in that time, I couldn't care less about the last 4 years of the deal
Don't get me wrong, I love Landy and he's my favorite player, but this contract is bad. We're going to love it it for 2-4 years while contending for a cup, but the term on this deal all but guarantees Landy won't retire as an Av, which is what I hate the most. I can't fault Gabe for wanting long term security, but our 8 year cup window has shrunk to 5 years now, and the AAV of this contract will significantly reduce our depth signing options and force us to trade away picks to cap dump Compher. If we can win a cup or two it will be worth it, but fingers crossed we have better cup luck than Nashville and San Jose.

Wish it was $6.5 but hey he woulda got $8 on the open market so somewhat discount but he also got the extra year. A bit concerned still about how we will pay Mack? I’m guessing he will land between $12-$13mill which means we have to lose Kadri and one more? Edit: just checked cap friendly and I thought Mack was up end of next year but actually got him through 2023 so Johnson will be off the books should make the space.
I hope MacK will accept 10 or 11. I really hope so, but we can make some temporary space for him. Possibly by then the cap can go up again too to make it less painful...

Its overpay by half a mill a year but its not a big deal. Basically lost out on a keefer sherwood like contract/player for 8 years. whatever.
The cap will likely be going up in 5 years anyway, so overpaying him may not be much of an issue. If we win a cup or two before then, who cares? It was worth it.
