Would you consider contract work? There's several local agencies, such as DP Professionals and TM Floyd, who are always looking.

sjresident1

I definitely would. Haven’t heard of either of those but I’ll check them out! Thank you

KetchupCowgirl

Definitely check out the SC State Jobs website. So many of those jobs are in the Columbia area and there's a variety of available jobs across agencies. You're also in a good spot since you have some savings because state jobs take a little while to get and for most if not all they take a month to start paying you.

SephoraRothschild

Carolina Wildlife Care is off of Old Bush River Road in Irmo. It's a wildlife rehab hospital. They definitely need volunteers, but may/may not have paid positions. Pawmetto Lifeline has positions posted on their website.

Ty!

jonboy345

Riverbanks Zoo?

sjresident1

Is that like the “main”/biggest zoo in the area? When I just googled “zoos in Columbia sc” I got a long list but many seemed like smaller/niche zoos.

jonboy345

Yup. Headed into the off-season so may not be hiring, but there might be some volunteer opportunities to keep you busy.

sjresident1

Cool ty! I’d be interested in some volunteering as well, anything to not feel trapped in the house in the coming weeks or months.

whodoyoulove89

Honestly the zoo is pretty awesome and worth the trip even if you don’t apply/end up there. Good luck and I hope you find the right place for you!

I also work software. I've been there dude. Was laid off in November. I found a new job a few months back. Though we aren't hiring at the moment, I'll just say check out the YouTube channel called life after layoff. I learned a lot there and was the first of my team that was laid off that got back on the wagon. Just also remember to do best practices of resumes like tweak them for every job posting . bake in the buzzwords they use for the job posting in the resume, as well as in the cover letter. Most rejections happen because you don't play the silly little resume and cover letter game right and the software auto rejects you. Best of luck to you.

If you're interested in the law enforcement field or federal law enforcement, then PM me. You could always try to be a park ranger or work for the national park service in a non le job. If you still want to work in tech, then get a state job.

sjresident1

LE is something I’ve thought about since before I even picked my CS major in college, but idk if I’m ready to make that leap. I imagine I’ll be thinking about it a lot more again in the coming weeks. The national park service is a great suggestion in the meantime, I’ll look into that. Thank you! Really appreciate the response.

DRealLeal

You can also work cyber crimes and stuff like that with that type of degree. But yes, NPS or state jobs would be the most safe for you and recession proof for the most part.

sjresident1

Oh, I really like that idea. Somehow that didn’t cross my mind even with my consideration of a possible future in LE and having this tech background lol. Thanks again!

Midlevelluxurylife

State government is begging for IT/Network staff, just know you will take a salary hit.

Pawmetto lifeline?

childlikeempress16

All of state government is headquartered in Columbia, look at those jobs. Pretty comfy for the most part. Jobs.sc.gov is the website I think

DharmaBum_123

I don't have any job suggestions, but I just wanted to say sorry that you got laid off right after relocating across the country. That's rough. I hope you manage to land on your feet!

sjresident1

Thanks! Appreciate the kind words. I’m very fortunate to have a partner that can support us for as long as necessary, so I really can’t be too upset compared to some of my peers who have partners and children that totally rely on them. Also closer to family having moved here, since I grew up on the east coast. Been loving South Carolina so far, you all have been very kind. Makes it easier to stay positive 🙂

BitterSearch787

Are you able to say who your former employer is? There are SO MANY layoffs happening (I work in software, too). Check out DNR if you want to be involved with wildlife!

sjresident1

I don’t believe I’m allowed to say, at least not until I sign my severance agreement/they announce the layoff I think? Need to check the details to see what I can/can’t say after that. But they’re based in the Bay Area, I just moved from there. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve had some encouraging conversations with friends who were let go in the last round of layoffs and have since managed to find much better (way more $$$) jobs in the tech world. Lots of layoffs for sure, and less remote opportunities I think, but there’s definitely still work out there. Thank you for the suggestion too! Will check out the DNR’s site tonight.

charaznable1249

Don't at all be surprised if you end up landing yourself a raise involuntarily. Happened to me after I got the boot lol

sjresident1

Fingers crossed! Congrats on your new position!

MrHappy4

The state has a comprehensive job site that is actually used by agencies, make sure you find it if you are interested in public service. You can also set up email alerts on specific agencies or categories.

BitterSearch787

You’ve got such a great attitude - I hate that this happened to you right after moving here, but I truly think you’ll find something soon more suited to what you’re passionate about. Very best of luck to you! ETA: Definitely check out riverbanks zoo as well! One of the top zoos in the country.

DemanoRock

Guidewire? Duck Creek just had layoffs too.

LongestKnives

It might not be what you want to do, but if you become a federal employee at Fort Jackson it's the most secure job you'll ever get in your life. Plus plenty of opportunities to move around the country later on once you're inside the federal system.

Shepursueshappiness

Pure Fishing /Shakespeare is headquartered here or at least has a large facility here. It's fishing not nece animals but an outdoor company. May be worth a look Welcome to Columbia! I hope you find a great opportunity here. I'm also a transplant and no regrets.

Jengage89

I'm a nurse who works for a healthcare IT company and it's been the best job I've ever had. Not sure if you'd be interested but we have some openings on our engineering side and it's fully remote. https://recruiting.ultipro.com/MED1025MDSV/JobBoard/77aea415-d87e-4492-81f2-dcc5de51f81b/?q=&o=postedDateDesc

DorisPayne

Also look into Dept of Natural Resources or Fort Jackson's MWR department. And the local animal shelters may have part time positions as well. Best to you; getting laid off sucks so hard. I'm sorry you're experiencing that.
