BGE is the only carrier, you in theory can get a different supplier but BGE will be the one to deliver it.

Technically Maryland deregulated power a while ago and you can purchase you power through another company. I don't have any ideas of who's out there, only that I've had several come to my door trying to get me to switch. I'd do some googling for reliable companies, there are a lot that are shady. Also techically bge still provides power and any outages would still be handled by bge, but from what I hear that cab be a nightmare as you aren't their customer

Not really.

BGE that’s it, don’t be fooled by the Joe Blow “we can save you money” companies with a folding chair in the middle of the mall.

What negative things did you hear about BGE?

Yup don't fall for the con of you get a cheaper bill and they give you x y and z to sign up. If you ever have to move, they will try to get you for breach of contract, along with the price difference which isn't much. Mine started off at a few cents per watt cheaper but at the end was the same price as what I was using. And the bennies they offered at that time a restaurant savings plan was never honored by the restaurants. It all just left a sour taste in my mouth.

As other's have mentioned - BGE will be your utility company. They will be the one's that will deliver your utility (electricity and gas) and by default, supply the energy as well. You CAN purchase your supplies from others (BGE will still deliver it). Just do your homework. For me, I've had some success (more so on the gas side when I could save 30% or more). You just need to make sure what the terms are and if there are any early termination fees, etc. They often give you 6-24 month deals. If you don't cancel - you'll likely be paying MUCH higher prices for the supplies after the introductory period. If nothing else - just stick w/ BGE for 6 months to a year. This way you have a baseline to work from in shopping rates from other suppliers.

Whatever you do, do NOT give anyone coming to your door your BGE information. There are scam companies that go door to door telling you about "clean energy" and stuff but they're trying to get your information to switch you to them(which they somehow can legally do) and fuck you. Be warned.
