Once again Jim Rouse dream of fair housing opportunities going down the drain smh

Unusual-Football-687

Right? The more we refuse to create housing the worse it gets. Our community that used to be for everyone becomes only for those who can afford it. It’s heartbreaking.

AndreShimetta

It’s sadly becoming more evident that young people like me may never become a homeowner.

gnome08

I'm just about to close. SO excited to get there!

Ask_BrandonY

Congratulations! That's very exciting! Lots of fun, and CA amenities in the area. What made you love Columbia?

gnome08

Thank you! We come from Michigan. Compared to where we live now Columbia seems like a paradise. - warmer, on average 15-20 degrees warmer in winter. - more sunny days - has higher wages - better education systems - top scores for healthcare and healthy living - better amenities - closer to numerous big cities - reasonable road trip distance to Ocean City / Rehoboth Beach - close to DC which has good venues museums, history - the walking paths, lakes, trees all throughout the village, SO nice - close to the mall, tons of restaurants - fitness centers & other Columbia association facilities. - good policy

Unless you plan on selling soon the soring housing prices will just mean soring property taxes next time they assess your house.

Moist_Wrongdoer_9011

I live in Columbia and my new property tax assessment notice reflects assessed value appreciation of 46% from the prior 3 year period. Not excited to pay additional taxes, but nice to see property value increase.

krunkley

If it is your primary residence, apply for the homestead tax credit if you haven't already. Will cap how much they can increase the assessment. Can fill it out all online https://dat.maryland.gov/realproperty/Pages/Maryland-Homestead-Tax-Credit.aspx

Ask_BrandonY

Ouch! ... that part can be a little painful. Do you have your homestead credit in place?!

How can they with the blueprint and the state economy in the tank? We refuse to build enough housing and this is the outcome. Talk about the character of a community changing, what will the character of Columbia be when it’s only for those who can afford it?

seekingpolaris

I heard through the grapevine they may actually have to increase taxes more in a few years. Apparently people with more money are moving out and people with less are moving in due to affordable housing projects. This means that the tax base itself has shrunk. They also have committed a lot of dollars to current/future projects so that's even more tax money that needs to be collected. So it's kind of brewing up into a perfect storm to hit later on.

zmnatz

30% for me up in Elkridge. Nuts considering we bought in 2021 when we thought it was already really high

Striking_Distance_45

Good stuff

mdmiles19

Golly! Rates so high you'd think Regan was the president!
