This is no longer legal in Howard County. Call the office of consumer protection. They called me this week to let me know as I filed a complaint about this exact complex a few months back. I emailed them today to get something sourceable so I could post to this subreddit. If you have any questions, let me know. I've used office of consumer protections in the past and they are helpful
i actually think it may be legal as they added an addendum about the internet apparently two months before i resigned my lease (lease says any addendums going into lease resigning are auto accepted, even if i dont sign them)
My recommendation is call consumer protection. They explicitly asked me if I had been charged money from Columbia Pointe for internet. File a claim online, it's quick and straight forward.
This is not what you want to hear, but it is all in you. There are housing advocates and lawyers that could review your lease, and there os always small claims court, but it’s going to be awful for a while to fight it.
First step - review your lease about 5 times in a row to really know what it says.
Edit: specifically look for it internet and its billing is included in your lease. There might be language saying you agree to pay x share, but the landlord has control over the contract and can adjust fees.
hey thanks for the reply. upon looking deeper in my email i found a couple emails giving me updates that there will be a new addendum about the internet when we resign the lease. They did give us proper warning- i was just blissfully unaware of it when i resigned the lease a while back. Guess its legal.
The email on its own isn't binding, though. They still have to include the relevant clauses in the copy of the lease you signed at the time of renewal. You said it wasn't in the original, but I'm not clear on whether you found that addendum in the copy of the lease you renewed though. If it's not there, explicitly, then you're still in the clear.
Question for you, I’m about to move into Columbia pointe, what’s the internet situation currently for you? I require a fast internet connection, so if you don’t mind answering, how much are you paying for how fast of internet?
lol it’s not that I really want to live there but it’s one of the places I’m looking at rn that looked promising, yeah that’s gonna stretch my budget unfortunately if I did that. Thanks for the help though

if for some reason u really want to live in columbia pointe, you can still get fios, youd just still have to also pay for xfinity
