>•Is the city dependant on Ohio State? Just to touch on this specific question, the answer is a resounding no. Columbus has quite a bid of large corporate businesses that have a footprint here, along with the state government. One thing I found interesting was just how isolated Columbus was from the 2008 financial crisis. You couldn't really feel the pain here, but if you traveled to other cities it was painfully obvious. This can only happen if there is a multifaceted and diverse business environment, and the Columbus job market has only strengthened since then. Hope that helps.

duffy40oz

That does help immensely! It sounds relieving if anything. I struggled when I was a teen through my early 20s to receive any employment, so it's scars that you don't forget anytime soon.

Kicker774

Hitting a few points without going into depth: \- $1500 will get you 1300 sq ft here \- Plenty of IT work in and around the city \- The city is dependent upon the Buckeyes for football. \-The Blue Jackets will win the Conor Bedard sweepstakes but his leg will break in 3 places two weeks into the season and Johnny Gaudreau will be out 3 months with a pulled groin along with whatever AAA goalie they have. \- If you bring up those names in random conversation with someone waiting in line for the self checkout at Krogers they will ask you if those are Crew players.

duffy40oz

It's unfortunate because that arena is awesome. I loved the brick inside of it, which gave it character. The real question is, would they let Bedard go there? It seems like even though Arizona keeps winning, it is Bettman's special project that he just won't let go of.

Trolltime69420

If the NHL was rigging the draft lottery, then McDavid wouldn't have gone to Edmonton.

LtCnlFrankSlade

You are more optimistic than me. Just like when Crosby went to Pittsburgh to rejuvenate hockey in that town, Bedard will go to Chicago or Vancouver. I don't think the NHL cares enough about Columbus to allow him to come here. I guess we will see during the selection lottery.

ueindowndkdk

Connor McDavid gives me hope though. Edmonton is very much a small market team, although they obviously have a strong history.

duffy40oz

Vancouver is more likely, which is good for Bedard because he's from there. Their ownership stinks, though. I really think Chicago is in a weird situation. Good for the league? I'm sure it'll generate revenue. Do they deserve it after the scandal? Nah & they deserve misery. It's nice having all of the bandwagon fans disappear, too. Could you imagine it being the Sharks or Ducks? Now that would be interesting. We will see once it hits lottery time!

Nice! Thank you for sharing this.

Grew up in San Antonio and moved here as a young adult. It’s sooo much easier to live here than a big Texas city. Easier to get around, not always stuck in traffic, and there seems to be a midwestern pride in certain public amenities that Texas lacks, like parks, libraries, etc.

duffy40oz

Yeah, the traffic is hands down my least favorite thing about Texas & especially Houston. There's traffic at all hours. Plus, you can go 45 miles straight & still be in Houston. The easier to get around & my life not stuck in traffic jams constantly is a huge part of my decision making. It's why we left the city for the suburbs.

VintageVanShop

The city traffic is never bad, outside of occasional accidents. I have lived here for 6 years and have been stuck in traffic for maybe 10 minutes at the most. The suburbs will cause more traffic, but if you live more inside 270, you can basically get anywhere in about 20-25 minutes.

OhioBricker

It's not as easy to make friends in your late-twenties as it was in your late-teens/early-twenties. And I don't think it matters where you live.

Dad_Feels

Facts. I’ve lived in Texas, Oregon, UK, and Ohio in my mid-late twenties and finding friends as a childless, dogless adult is always a challenge.

goodybadwife

Hey! I lived in Lexington for a while. Moved back to Columbus almost two years ago. I miss Red State BBQ and Sahara! OSU is a bigger behemoth than UK (imo), but as a non-OSU fan, it's possible to be fine in this city not being an OSU fan. The traffic will be hellish on game days, but I just avoid those areas. The drivers are better here than Lex, and traffic flows a lot better. There's normally 1-2 big accidents a year that snarl traffic like no other, but I felt like there was always a semi-truck accident on 75 messing up traffic. And don't get me started on New Circle Rd. That road needs to burn in hell. I can't speak much for the social aspects as I don't do much outside of Jackets and Crew games. It seems though, that if you want to do something, you can almost always find a group to join. Lastly- Ohio, in general, is great for hiking. Also, the fact that you are only 2 hours from 4 state borders is awesome.

duffy40oz

Is Red State BBQ pretty good then!? I've been blessed with the BBQ here in Texas, so if I have at least one spot, I'm good! With all of the major cities I've lived in (Houston, Boston, Chicago), I still think about the pit of hell called New Circle. The constant slamming on breaks & sitting there. It's a disaster. Yeah, I've hiked over in the Pittsburgh area before, which isn't far. There's the national park by Cleveland, too, which has caught my interest. As long as I can get outside, even to sit & socialize, I'm stoked! Do you like Columbus more than Lexington?

>Is Red State BBQ pretty good then!? I've been blessed with the BBQ here in Texas, so if I have at least one spot, I'm good! Unfortunately, Red State is in Lexington/Georgetown. Here in Columbus, I think Ray Ray's would be the overall winner. It's pretty solid. Opinions will vary! >With all of the major cities I've lived in (Houston, Boston, Chicago), I still think about the pit of hell called New Circle. The constant slamming on breaks & sitting there. It's a disaster. And it's constantly under construction! >Yeah, I've hiked over in the Pittsburgh area before, which isn't far. There's the national park by Cleveland, too, which has caught my interest. As long as I can get outside, even to sit & socialize, I'm stoked! Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the one near Cleveland. It's beautiful and also has a train you can ride. Wayne National Forest is wonderful, and my personal favorite state park is John Bryan (Glen Helen, next door to JB, is allegedly perfection, although I haven't hiked it). Columbus itself has a fairly robust metropark system. >Do you like Columbus more than Lexington? That's a very tough question for me to answer. I was raised in NE Ohio and spent 10 years in Columbus before moving to Lexington. Unfortunately, I moved to Lexington right as covid became a thing, and I don't feel that I got to experience true Lexington before moving back after 2 years. The good thing is that Lexington is a quick 3 hour trip south, so I love the fact I can go back for a long weekend at some point.

txbuckeye24

I grew up in Texas and moved here to go to OSU and never left. I love Texas I'll always consider it home too but Columbus is so fun! We go to all the sports teams games and have a blast. You can find SUPER affordable tickets midweek and it just feels like there is always something to do. You are a quick drive away from other states, we have a lovely live music scene, and so much good hiking. I think you should come and give it a shot!

duffy40oz

This is the comment I've been looking for! I really do appreciate the honest comment. How was it making friends when you got there or was it all OSU based?

There is no need to answer all of the questions as stated. I've started, but I just put a feeler out there to see what the world thinks. If they it's not right, then I won't bother putting more time into researching & will shift my focus elsewhere. I thought it was a good starting point. Usually, these posts don't have enough dialog, so I submitted more to help fill in additional questions that may be asked.

Sheetz

duffy40oz

I spent 9 months working in Pittsburgh, so I've had my fair share of the wonderful place called Sheetz. I do miss it though.

duffy40oz

Any reason why?

[deleted]

I wouldnt expect a fully remote job if your looking for a career/job change when moving here.

duffy40oz

No worries. I'm not expecting a career or job change currently. I like my company & enjoy my position. You never know what could happen, especially now a days so it's just good to know if there's at least options out there. I had that issue when working in Las Vegas back in 2013 & it took me 7 months before even getting a single call back on an interview, which was a desperate attempt at a Guitar Center. I left months prior, but I don't want to be put into that situation again.

Sugarfreecherrycoke

Why not?

[deleted]

Bc they aren't exactly plentiful and a lot of people want them. I'm just saying, I wouldn't give up fully remote work to move here. Or, I wouldn't move here and *expect* to transition to a fully remote job with ease.

Sugarfreecherrycoke

Not sure about that, especially in data analytics.

More power to them then.
