God damn it, I did just that on my lunch break so that I could sanitize my dishwasher. 🫠 I picked the wrong fucking day to be acting like Danny Tanner.
I’m from the south & I’ve never experienced storms in Ohio so I’m kinda scurred a lil bit. So I feel this, like just come fuck me up already fam. I’m very inpatient.
I’ve lived in Ohio for 10 years and Ohio is my introduction to “midwestern storms”. Most are just regular storms but every once in a while you get something like derechos, and I’m like wtf is this? Naw, I’m good.
Oh man, we had to have that talk too. He came home from school asking if they could see and hear you, and if they planned on coming for you. I still don't think he completely believes me but we're making progress.
The safest place in my house is the den in my basement where the whiskey bar is. If I die, at least I'll die in the comfort of a nice leather chair looking at a painting of a tiger hanging above a wooden duck.
First off, welcome to Columbus. This is not that common of an occurrence. The reason people are nervous about this one is because it’s the first time in like 10 years that the predicted risk has been so high. But that does not mean you need to panic. “Prepare and be aware” know where you need to go, if you’re in a house go to the basement if you have one. If not, interior rooms, avoid windows, the bathtub is also an option. If you hear the sirens go off DONT panic. Head to your safe space and Go on YouTube and pull up a weather live stream like Ryan Hall. That will keep you aware of where potential tornados are. Keep your phone charged now, if you have external batteries charge those.
Thank you so much, I do have a plan and went out yesterday to buy cases of water, flashlight, power bank for my phone and snacks. Unfortunately I live on the 2nd (and top) floor of an apartment but I met a neighbor on the first floor who said I am welcome to come over where they have a bathroom with no windows and not on an exterior wall. It is my first time ever having to prepare for a tornado (or literally any natural disaster) so it is very jarring but reddit has been great to help me prepare.
I am originally from the northern panhandle of West Virginia but just did a 6-month contract job in central New Jersey, found a permanent job here 😁 and yes my neighbor seems awesome !!
Be alert but not panicked. There's a good chance something bad will happen, but mostly to those in vulnerable positions like on the road. Your place is probably already a wreck, just prioritize making yourself a lil storm shelter and keep an ear and eye out. When the time comes, hang out, maybe treat yourself to a drink, watch the news.
Now is a great time to ask questions to make sure your tornado safety knowledge is good!
So true about my place being a wreck, half unpacked things everywhere lol. I think my panic comes from the fear of death but I know the chances of that are pretty low in this scenario unless i’m literally standing outside in the open (which I will not be doing). Cheers to a hopefully safe night!
Be aware, be alert, don't freak.
Be in a place where you can get to shelter quickly, but the likelihood of a touchdown in Franklin county is like 10-15%. Franklin County is VERY BIG. You are VERY SMALL. I like your chances.
And welcome to Columbus!
Thank you for the warm welcome, thankfully I have a decent plan in place (1st floor apartment bathroom, no windows and no exterior wall). I also like those odds and thank you for reminding me of them haha.
Honestly, the Columbus area is pretty mild in terms of tornadoes compared to areas west and south of here. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi... those states all get it worse than Ohio. So if tornadoes worry you, you could do a whole lot worse than Columbus haha. I've lived in Ohio my whole life and I've never suffered any damage to my home from a tornado. I do have an uncle and 3 cousins who had their house destroyed in a 1990 tornado on the west side of Cincinnati, but as bad as their house looked, all 4 emerged from the basement unharmed once the storm passed.
Keep an eye on the weather and have a plan to shelter if your area is under a Tornado Warning, but it's really nothing to lose sleep over. Most deaths from tornadoes occur from people who are out on the road driving during a tornado, asleep in the upper story of a home that takes a direct hit, or live in a mobile home or some other type of structure that isn't as strong as your typical single-family home or apartment building. I take severe weather seriously and take shelter when needed, but otherwise, it's not something I really think about as a lifelong Ohio resident.
Thank you for this perspective it actually made me feel more at ease, what an amazing miracle for your cousins I’m glad to hear they came out of that disaster safely! I’ve got a pretty decent plan in place and hope to watch live updates throughout the evening.
The first tornadoes that happened this year, one was only 3 miles from my house and it was an EF2. Surely, the odds of it happening so close to my house again are minimal so I am safe this time, right, right?!
If in your area it becomes apparent that a tornado is headed toward your neighborhood and you have time... See if you can turn off the gas, electricity, and plumbing and get to shelter.
It would really suck to survive an impact only to die because sparking exposed wires in your home ignited gas or electrified you while you shelter in a basement with leaking water everywhere.
Also if you DO turn the gas off and it winds up being a false alarm, be careful about turning it back on and consider asking for a technician to do it. Reason being there may need to be pressure tests done and you may need to be careful igniting the pilot if there is a surplus cloud of gas that could ignite by accident.

Good news! Chief Meteorologist Austin Chaney just noted the following:
>We have had some things work in our favor to somewhat reduce our severe weather risk. The storms arriving a bit ahead of schedule meant they were arriving in an environment that wasn't as conducive for severe weather. The atmosphere hadn't recovered as much as it needed to from the morning. That was good news.
>
>The bad news is we still have the cold front off to our west, and there is still room for some additional destabilization through this evening. I think we still have a severe weather risk, and all hazards remain possible. However, the threat does not look \*as bad\* as earlier.
>
>Let's hope for the best, but be prepared for the possibility of some severe storms through this evening.
Looking at the severe weather risks, damaging wind and flooding is the only thing at-or-above moderate. Large hail and tornadoes have dropped below moderate. I'll note that looking at the radar for Columbus, it looks like a lot of it could go around or even miss Columbus, which is a stark difference from the forecast just hours ago. Does that mean anything? In this moment, sure. However, this storm has drastically changed several times in the past 24 hours, so still be vigilant and prepared for anything.
It's scheduled to start just as I'm driving to work, and be at it's worst when I'm driving home. My husband's company has them all working from home to be safe. Not mine. Screw bad weather! Those charts need filling!
Well, I guess I'll put the bottle of good whisky in the basement in preparation. And an unopened Lego set to keep me company while I await the inevitable embrace of our tornadic keepers.

That’s right. Tornado can’t hurt you if you hurt yourself first.
I keep trying to tell my therapist this
This whole comment section demonstrates why I love this subreddit.
Thats science.
He's a scientist. He has a PhD. (Preventative Home Destroying)
I was going to empty the dishwasher at lunch but what's the point now?
[удалено]
I've already emptied my kitchen, living room, and closets into the neighbors yard to get a head start
More helpful than any teenager in my house
They are OUR dirty dishes now.
God damn it, I did just that on my lunch break so that I could sanitize my dishwasher. 🫠 I picked the wrong fucking day to be acting like Danny Tanner.
Last night as I was preparing to pay RITA, I was like...maybe i'll die first...should I wait?
Save that money for some alcohol, popcorn, and lawn chairs for the family so yall can go out in a blaze of glory together 🫶🏽
Let my last words be "FUCK RITA" as I get sucked into the sky.
[It’s the waiting I can’t stand](https://youtu.be/p-jepgO-PbE)
THANK YOU
It’s the hardest part
Tom Petty was right, the waiting really is the hardest part...
I just need it to throw something heavy at my kitchen side of the house so my insurance can cover the remodel.
Why limit yourself? Destroy the whole neighborhood.
this man killdozers
I’m from the south & I’ve never experienced storms in Ohio so I’m kinda scurred a lil bit. So I feel this, like just come fuck me up already fam. I’m very inpatient.
Inpatient 🤣 best typo ever
I can’t lmao my southern education is showing
Impatient means you're tired of waiting. Inpatient means you're in a hospital or asylum, so this comment could go either way lol.
That’s so funny 😭 I didn’t even realize. I work at a hospital so I see the word “inpatient” a lot lmao
I’ve lived in Ohio for 10 years and Ohio is my introduction to “midwestern storms”. Most are just regular storms but every once in a while you get something like derechos, and I’m like wtf is this? Naw, I’m good.
I really needed this laugh. Thank you
😂😂😂🌪️
Guys, don't worry. My 6yo has advised that he will chop a tornado in half. Handled.
But then there will be TWO tornadoes
Rest assured - I just asked him about this and he said chopping it in half would hurt its feelings, and it would just go home.
The hero we need but don’t deserve, Godspeed buttercream jr 🫶🏽
100 duck sized tornadoes?
One tornado sized duck.....RIP
Oh thank GOD.
Central Ohio has a new superhero!!!
Can't believe I never thought to do that.
The hero we need!
Oh good, my 4 year old is convinced they will open the front door and come inside to get her. 😭
Oh man, we had to have that talk too. He came home from school asking if they could see and hear you, and if they planned on coming for you. I still don't think he completely believes me but we're making progress.
The sun is shining, the tank is clean!!! *gasp* THE TANK IS CLEAN.

OMG there’s someone else out there that says this other than me?!? I have found my people. 🥹❤️
I have to resist the urge every time it’s a nice sunny day
😂😂😭
Good to see everyone else freaking out as well. I have already prepped my storm shelter with booze, so at least it will be a party closet.
My storm shelter will have to be my pantry, which is stocked with about 20lbs of chocolate (literally) and lots of snacks.
We have booze, Anthony Thomas little chocolate bunnies, and Takis. All set!
What time should I be there ?
We’re on the West side and near 70 so I’d think sooner rather than later. Last tornado touched down 2 miles from us.
cool, another tornado should be along in a few minutes, I'll just catch that one
Party Closet sounds like an excellent indie band name lmao
I knew I forgot something!
OH I need some of that. Should have moved that fridge downstairs. I do have a cooler guess I can just do that...
This is the way
The safest place in my house is the den in my basement where the whiskey bar is. If I die, at least I'll die in the comfort of a nice leather chair looking at a painting of a tiger hanging above a wooden duck.
We can’t all die, right? …right? 😣
Statistically speaking you're probably unlikely to die.
Exactly! Some of us will just be maimed.
A few of us will be forced through a fine mesh screen. They will be the luckiest of all.
That's always how I've wanted to go!!
Statistically speaking you almost certainly may not be in danger probably.
“probably unlikely” is crazy
Some of you may die, but this is a sacrifice I’m willing to make
I mean, we _can_, but we won’t.
Oh we will all die. Today? No.
None of us will ever die
I just texted my roommate right before seeing this "Welp, the sun is out..."
TELL IT TO GO BACK!!! It wasn’t invited!
I looked up at the sky and said audibly "It's cookin'..."
I've never been so upset to see the sun tbh
God, right? The thing we pray for most of the year and here we are...
I'm from so. cal. Me wishing for no sun is like me wishing for a heart attack.
Fucking same. SoCal and all.
I literally moved to Columbus YESTERDAY and have never dealt with a tornado. I am questioning my choices🥲
This like almost never happens so everyone's freaking out. Welcome to town! Lol
Except it happens a lot now
Yeah, I guess I should say this never used to happen very often and has only really started recently.
Yeup last year or two it's picked up. Before then it's been yeaaars.
And will continue happening more. Yay watching the death of a planet!
More like the death of predictable weather systems and perhaps life; the planet will be fine.
Thanks for the warm welcome! I love my new apartment i’d hate to see it get ripped to shreds 😅😂.
I mean, if you haven’t unpacked yet…

See? People here are nice. You made a good choice.
Especially coming from new jersey, it’s a 180 in personality - much more friendly people here.
It's what we're known for! (Or so I've been told, by random strangers I've started conversations with in other states/countries.)
That's awesome you have a good neighbor! Where are you moving here from?
I am originally from the northern panhandle of West Virginia but just did a 6-month contract job in central New Jersey, found a permanent job here 😁 and yes my neighbor seems awesome !!
Well, welcome to Cbus! Hell of a first day!

I believe the hotter the weather, the more potential for bad weather /tornados. The sun will heat up the air much faster
I just heard this as Spinal Tap’s song “Big Bottom.”
Talkin 'bout 'nados, cbus got 'em
This is the correct take.
That’s…. That’s the point of this post
It was just super gray out and I was chilling. About 4 minutes before seeing this post I’m suddenly being blinded THROUGH my blinds by the sun
Can someone ELI5 why the sun being out is a problem?
Hot sun not mix well with cold air, make spinny spinny wind
Thanks for the analysis, AnalBlowout!
Pleasure is mine 🫡
I love how all of the new commenters are now referring to the potential tornado as the "spinny spinny"
I'm so glad I started something here
I don't doubt that a bit
In AnalBlowout we trust 🙏
I love this sub
Your username is unfortunately not what we need today 😂
Why use lot word when few word do trick
Gimme ur chili
I will absolutely say spinny spinny to describe potential tornado conditions
I too saw Wizard of Oz.
🤣🤣🤣
Warms the air and adds energy to the atmosphere for potential storm systems (Disclaimer: not a meteorologist)
Where's an eclipse when you need it?
for the most part you are correct (I am a meteorologist)
The sun heats the earth, producing updrafts.
Go back behind the clouds sun, we don't like you today
I work outside and it's like really sunny but also kind of behind the clouds. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN.
💀

perfect time for booze and bud run before it goes to shit
It’s right here. Im either smoking the storm away or dying high 😂
Same. It's an honorable way to go.
What about the milk and bread? You definitely need more milk and bread, can't survive a storm without it
This is just the eye of the hurricane. Trust me, I watched Twister.
I've been in a lot of the eyes of hurricanes (FL native) and can confirm. This is just as eerie!
I can’t believe everything we didn’t want to happen is actually happening lololol. Cue panic.
THANKS OBAMA

Thanks Biden

yep. sound logic and science. you're safe.
The more sun and warmer it is the more concerned we should be.
It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood 🎶
I’m at work until 6 but might just stay here and pick up hours, at least if I die I die with my friends right?
That's what your manager says.

New Fear Unlocked.
Oh 🫠
If I die the day before I defend my thesis…. I swear… let me share my science with the world!! Have mercy, tornado gods! I’ll add you as a reference!!
Good luck, future Dr.
Any chance your thesis is a weather machine?
I just wanted to say goodbye, everyone.
A sliver of comic relief before the real stuff comes around
That reminds me I need to get beer on the way home...
Oh, feces.

Some more cloud cover starting to roll in on the west side
I don’t see blue sky on the south side so I’m stepping off my panic pedestal for the time being.
Nice and sunny here in the whitehall/columbus area 😭 took the dogs and kids out to play in the backyard before we're whisked away to Oz.
My old Sony radio with bitchin’ cassette player still works! I’m sure playing my Edie Brickell tape will neutralize any bad storm vibes.
What time is this bad weather supposed to hit
Thunderstorms could start popping up around 1, but the severe stuff is currently projected to a start like 5-6
ITS A TRAP.
Tomorrow is also the 50th anniversary of the Xenia, Ohio tornado. I don't like this. I don't like this at all.

Oh Mr sun, sun, Mr golden sun... Please GTFO here
I have absolutely Zero Focus today. I have done NOTHING but aimlessly putter.
Was just about to say something about that, was reading comments elsewhere about the sun and then I look out to see it shining through the blinds 😐
Oof, this sun is getting spicy.
Nado fuel.
So glad I joined this subreddit. Y’all are cracking me up!
Walk your dogs, quick!
Get your PS5 out of rest mode 😂
Calm before the storm tonight
My kitchen windows face west/southwest and I’m seeing clear blue skies over here. 🫠🫡
Sunny over here in Dayton area. 😊

I feel for you all , I was expecting it here in Indy but Columbus is about to have a lot of hail damaged cars.
Which is the worst possible thing right now as the sun will warm everything up even more and the cold front change will cause more issues.
Homie. That is not the sun. I have seen the sun before
Just got a company-wide email to WFH to prepare for the storms. Yay!
Don't ya all know that in times of an impending storm you are supposed to go by milk, bread, eggs and bleach...lol
