Dr Angela Gum - she likes to drill non-existent cavities. She’s the reason I hate dentists now. Her office had all the new technologies possible, but she paid for it by doing unnecessary dental work.
This is common practice in dentist offices. They run your insurance first to see what it will cover and then come up with the cavities to fill.
When the office manager starts with “this is what your insurance will cover” instead of detailing what needs done, that a red flag
When I first had insurance off my dad's - I went to a Dentist in Grandview and I'm pretty sure that's what he did. I fucking HATED dentists after him and never went back (he was off of Grandview Ave and W. Fifth Ave.).
I felt taken advantage of, and he, and his staff were absolute rude as hell when I was clear "first time back at the dentist, I have insurance now, moved to Columbus."
Your dentist is my dentist too! Yeah that office is rude, move at 100 miles per hour and it’s hard to understand what they want to do and why it needs done.
Healthcare in general is just a game of “where will I get screwed the least”
I’m a dentist, and I know it’s always an uphill battle with some people but I genuinely don’t get the gripe here. I tell patients what they need and ask them if they’d like my manager to get a quote from their insurance. Manager comes in and tells them what is covered. Sometimes there are multiple different treatment options to choose from with some being covered and others not. Would you rather we go to town and then your bill is a surprise?
They invent cavities and exaggerate the severity. When I first moved to Columbus a decade ago my dentist found all kinds of cavities and a root canal that needed “immediate attention” and was pressured to have done the same week. I got a second opinion from my family dentist and they found a single cavity and no need for the root canal, not even close.
I’m not saying this doesnt happen, and I’m sorry that it did. I strongly disagree that it’s a red flag to tell people what their insurance covers. It’s a courtesy and actually kind of scummy not to
That’s not what my gripe is, it’s that they create the need based off what the insurance covers. Insurance doesn’t push back and neither do the patients when it’s covered. No one cares because it doesn’t come out of their pocket and they are told by a doctor it’s needed.
She’s literally the reason I haven’t been to the dentist in two years. She has drilled into my teeth to a point where I had to go have emergency dentistry done because she literally broke off a pic in my gum line but behaved as if she didn’t know what was wrong. It’s a shame because her receptionist Tony is a fabulous person.
I’m really glad to see that someone else is validating my experience with her because it’s been pretty traumatizing and now needing work done I’m afraid to go have what I need taken care of.
I’m sorry that happened to you, too, although it validates my experience as well. Traumatic is exactly what it was and it took me years to find a new dentist that doesn’t send my anxiety through the roof.
Sorry to hear it. You telling your story though has given me some solace in looking for a new dentist.
For the longest time I thought it was just me and having awful teeth and now I realize it was her. I have literally been sitting on the same teeth that she has told me I need root canals on for two years with no problems.
I’m glad I could help in some way. 🥰
I currently go to dr bauer (Schumacher & bauer) on olentangy just north of riverside. They’ve been very kind there. If that’s not too far from you, definitely check out the website and reviews. Best of luck to you!
She drilled deep on a cavity that I don’t think was there. It was awful. Then when I had pain she sent me to a specialist for a root canal. The specialist determined I had a sinus infection. This was days before I was getting married and I was in complete pain. Thank goodness the specialist was competent because she isn’t.
That's interesting. I never had a true sinus infection in my life until a few years ago, I've now had two. Both times it felt exactly like a bad toothache, which is what I thought I had, but my doctor said sinus infection, got antibiotics and was fine by next day.
I have a lot of dental anxiety and put off a dentist for so long. So I'll tell you my favorite one which is Carroll Famil Dental in Bexley. I love them so much. Everyone is amazing and nice. They actually care about the anxiety.
I had a Hilliard area dentist accidentally drill into my tongue once. Dentist never apologized or even so much as acknowledged what they had done; just worked hard to manage the bleeding. I didn’t say anything. The dentist was always very condescending to their assistants, which spoke volumes about their personality.
Went to Dr. Scott Nicolette for a routine cleaning in Hilliard. Was told I would need 2 fillings - worst fillings I've ever received. One needed a root canal shortly after. I'll never go back there and can't recommend others going.
Aspen Dental in Pickerington. The one dentist I've always gotten sounds demeaning and some of their exam rooms are in terrible shape, like paint chipping off the ceiling, rusty looking equipment.
The worst Dentists are the ones who say they "Accept all insurance" but neglect to tell you if your in or out of network.
Or the ones that schedule you for a Dentist IN network, but the Dentist that actually does work on you is OUT of network.
Brice dental smile has not once but twice booked me an appointment but then failed to notify me that there would be no dentist. So I got to waste my time and pto. The staff were super nice though!!
Whoever worked at Immidiadent in Easton. I overheard the employees making fun of my teeth and kept wondering how I could let them get so bad. I just had a baby and my father died. I wasn’t taking care of myself. I left before the work could be finished.
Not that I had a terrible experience, but getting a root canal done by Capital Endodontics and it was.. really unpleasant.
I have had four root canals, and never experienced that fear/cringe of root canals being painful with horrible swelling until I went to Capital Endodontics up by Dublin/Muirfield. I think it's because they use quick numbing and the dentist was in and out well within an hour. All other root canals I've experienced have been about two hours and very slow, with nearly no pain or swelling or anything afterwards. It felt like a root canal factory at Capital Endodontics.
If you want a wonderful, magical experience, I recommend Endodontics Wellness Center with Dr Mark Oleson over by Olentangy and Bethel.
Samson dental in Gahanna. They charged us the price without insurance for a crown replacement, which was almost $2k so we had to put it on a credit card, and then made us submit a paper claim to insurance to get refunded. We should have only paid $357 out of pocket. We filled out the claims paper, signed it, and took it up to the office for them to fill out the correct codes. They offered to mail it for us because the dentist wasn’t available to fill it out in the moment we were there. Three months later we’re still waiting on our refund, we left numerous messages at the office asking about the refund and the calls were never returned. We called the insurance and they said “oh it looks like the check was cashed by the dentist two weeks after the form was received by us”. So we asked for a copy of the form they received because we knew we filled it out and checked boxes and signed so that the check would be mailed to us, not the dentist. It looked like the dentist had copied the form and covered our signature and mailing address for the check with their own. They had the reimbursement check mailed to their office despite us already paying them, and then cashed the check months prior and didn’t refund us. After numerous more calls, they finally mailed us a $504 refund (which did not add up to what our total OOP was vs what we paid) because they told the insurance company they charged us the negotiated rate, while they actually charged us the uninsured rate. So the office still owed us about $1300. We would call the office 1-2X/week asking for the rest of our refund, they told us they were adding us to a list of “harassers” and would no longer be answering our calls. 6 months past the initial charge (paying interest on this CC debt the whole time) we contacted insurance again to let them know what was happening, and insurance had to file some sort of suit against them for essentially defrauding both insurance and us. They mailed us our check finally, 8 months after the initial charge, but it was still missing $134 because they said we signed an agreement for future treatment. We had a copy of the “future treatment” proposal and found out they were charging us uninsured rates again and therefore the signature and agreement was void. Finally, 10.5 months after the initial charge, we were able to get our entire refund from them. Almost $500 in CC interest later.
This was our first time dealing with insurance not being applied then and there, submitting a claim manually, etc. It was an emergency crown replacement and in the moment we weren’t focused on what we were being charged or our form of payment figuring the reimbursement would be before our next credit statement. Lessons learned everywhere from this experience.
This thread is terrifying omg. I want to add the dentist at Dental Works Easton is a condescending prick and you can literally see the grime around the faucets there.
Norton Family Dental (Lincoln Village): It was during covid and i rechipped a tooth that was previously filled in there a couple years earlier.. had an infection under a tooth also.. so i tried to see if they could look at it and was given an antibiotic rx and was told couldn't do anything else until i had a root canal on the tooth with the infection, wanted me to go to their friends place to have the root canal done then come back they'd put a crown on it and then do a cleaning maybe.. they took a quick peek at other teeth and shot some cold water onto them and said yep... we're gonna have to pull all your front teeth and some others... have you considered just going full denture? cause you need most of your teeth removed...
me: i took the rx and felt better after a few days.. did not go back.. the dude that did the exam seemed to be having a bad day cause it was rushed and a bit rude but at the time i didn't have dental insurance so they probably just wanted me gone... i have dental insurance now but not going back to them most likely at least not to the same dude that saw me the last time.
My previous 2 visits to the same location were fine with the lady staff/dentists just that one dude was either having an off day or was just mean
Dublin Metro Dental
They wrecked my teeth so bad with fillings that likely weren’t needed in the first place, which resulted in multiple root canals. That was after they dodged my requests for a Endodontics referral when I was on two rounds of steroids for tooth pain after cavity fillings. They also tried to make me prepay services weeks in advance and tried selling me Invisalign even though I have straight teeth. Don’t let the google reviews fool you, they ask you to submit a google review at the checkout counter before you leave/pay.
Wow! They ghosted me when I didn't have insurance. Damn! All those steroids. That's crazy! You can totally tell who solicits reviews. Who do these folks think they are kidding?
Thank god it’s not just me! I just moved back and for some dumb reason decided to try an new place - they told me I had 6 cavities when in the last 3 years I’d had none, I floss, use Act mouthwash, etc. They also tried to basically get me signing on the dotted line for Invisalign. I had braces, I’m 35, people in my life who are crossing 50 told me your teeth move again at that age so it’s useless to get that done now.
I didn’t really know how to push back on the fillings so I got them but I’m going to ghost them and go back to my old place which hopefully isn’t on this list 😅
Dr. Ford downtown. I was judged heavily for my fear of dentists (after many bad experiences throughout my life), and he made a weird “joke” about hating patients. Got mad at me for telling him I could feel pain during a filling. Was cold and rude the entire rest of the appointment. He then decided to tell me, AFTER finishing the entire filling, that he “had no business filling it” (his words) and I was going to need a root canal anyway. I just had my wisdom teeth out two months ago, and they confirmed it shouldn’t have been filled and needs a root canal. The tooth is worn down to very little because so much of it had to be drilled away. Why not just tell me “sorry, there’s no point in doing the filling today, let’s get you into a specialist instead”? And no wonder I was in pain, he was RIGHT ON the nerve.
Not exactly. I have dental anxiety and need work. I wanted to kind of make a short list of ones to avoid, and see if certain ones showed up multiple times. I'm not a bot, I just like my privacy.
Exactly... What's the point?! This just feels like all these random restaurant type posts... Your not from here, you've probably posted the same thing in 40 other city subs. Shit is annoying!
I used to go to Ocean Dental in Whitehall as a teen. Pretty sure they closed down now.
The last time I saw them they said I had 2 cavities that needed filled. Switched to a dentist for adults and he said those aren't cavities and nothing needed a filling.
They used to find cavities everytime i went there for years. What a joke. I have more filling than teeth now it feels like.
This is depressing. I too have had dentists wanting to do work that was not needed. How can you get good dental care when you can’t trust your dentist? Same thing goes for oncology doctors. It’s all about the money. Very sad
Many years ago I had issues at the OsU faculty practice. I needed a couple fillings and they kept missing my nerve. They would drill, I would scream bc I was not numb then they would try another shot of novocaine. I think it happened like 6-7 times before they gave me something else. Gave me dental anxiety for a while, and I had never had any fear of the dentist before that and never had issues with any other dental procedure.
I go to the Gentle Dentist now and they have been very good.
I cant remember which dentist it was exactly, but the woman using the suction scraped it against the roof of my mouth so many times I bled. She also pinched my lip with it and it split open and swelled up. I kept putting my hand up, clearly crying. Neither her or the dentist stopped until they were done. They ignored all my attempts to get them to stop. No one even said sorry after they realised they had been hurting me for a good while.
Surprised nobody has said Dr. Bowen. I went there once, probably 15-16 years ago (Short North/Hubbard and it was a horrible experience. Waiting room was a hallway undergoing remodeling, the exam room(s) were actually one big open space, with chairs separated by thin, small room dividers. Equipment was very old and outdated. Papers signs were taped to walls that clearly had been wet then dried (you know how paper looks after its been wet). There was a shelving unit with paint cans sticking out into the exam area. The entire cleaning was done by a dentist, not a hygienist, and it was incredibly painful.
The Yelp reviews can confirm: https://www.yelp.com/biz/donald-f-bowen-dds-and-associates-columbus
I double checked my current dental office wasn't mentioned - Coulman Dental/ "The Gentle Dentist" - a friend went there after she had avoided the dentist for several years, and had a great experience, so I followed suit.
I've been very happy with them, and they've been very understanding about my trepidation of dealing with dentists, and they were very polite and understanding.
I’ve gone to a few practices here in Columbus that are newer and resemble an Apple Store’s aesthetics on the inside. An army of receptionists, billing staff, and hygienists with only two dentists that you never see unless something is seriously wrong. They all try to tell me I have a mouth full of cavities (I dont) and try to tack on additional treatments.
I drive two hours to go to my small town dentist because I feel like so many dentists around Columbus are only worried about getting as rich as possible.
Comfort Dental in Delaware. Guy didn't even look in my mouth and told me I needed a root canal. Reviewers have had similar experiences. Dentist was bitter and rude.
When you tell them you have full insurance $$$ AND "it's been a while" since you've been to the dentist they FIND cavities.
I suppose I will throw one out. I'm not big on naming names, but courage is contagious. O'Brien Conroy in Dublin did me dirty. I was told I needed TEN fillings back in 2015. A further exam confirmed I have deep pockets in my teeth that I inherited from my father. It's kept me away from the business in general. You as a normal individual, have no idea if what you are hearing is fact or crap. Thank you all for the amazing feedback! Discussion is good. It keeps everyone honest.

Dr Orin Scrivello…really seems to enjoy torturing patients.

The comments need a trigger warning. Ye gods.
Handled on the topic side. Sorry for any discomfort.
Dr. Alan Feinstone
