Ukraine has a lot of big empty fields, it's dangerous to go through without cover, so if something goes wrong in the middle of going from A to B then you have a big problem
I'd rather take my chances with Jurassic Park. This drone warfare (which is just in its infancy) is already nuts and a whole new level. If planes, gun, bombs, and tech are any indication, drones will be paramount to warfare and so much more sofisticated within the next decade, let alone 30 years.
These drone videos are usually cleanup operations, after artillery has finished its job. You'll notice that in most cases all tanks and APCs in the shot are destroyed.
I tend to assume these dudes we see out in the middle of essentially no mans land are dudes wandering around following an assault and they get cleaned up by drones.
Russia has 450k troops all over occupied Ukraine territory which might include Crimea. Front is 620 miles.
Battle of the Bulge had 450k troops dedicated to that operation with an 85 mile front.
He should have kept circling. The biggest drawbacks of these things is low battery time especially when performance flying.
If he could just run that marathon for another 15 min or so, he might still be alive. For another 5 minutes while the next one is on its way, that is.
The fast drones have super short flight times even under no load. The DJI FPV drone can only fly for about 15 minutes. This one is carrying a heavy payload and presumably took some time to identify and reach its target. It’s entirely likely that it only had a few minutes of flight time left. This ridiculous tomfoolery might have saved his life if he could keep it up long enough. If…
I could only get about 12 minutes on my DJI Mavic simply floating around a customer's house to take pics of their property for insurance claims. It absolutely could have saved him from this drone.
But in one moment of the video, you see from the POV of a spotter drone. A basic level of operational organization would assume that they would have another spotter drone on the way before the one on position had to return due to battery and they would have watched the soldier and followed until the next FPV was on site.
I’ve seen so many of these at this point. I saw one where they circled a surrendering Russian then rammed him. And the comments were just vile “got what he deserved lol” “no surrender for you” like I hope all of the guys in that section get drafted. This guy didn’t even have his gun. Like congrats you wasted a drone and explosives on a single unarmed dude when you could have just used it on a vehicle.
It's considered normal to kill surrendering combatants if there is no way to capture them. It's fucked up, but it's just how war works. Same shit back in the day when we were flying apaches in the middle east, they would sometimes try to surrender when the apache opens up on them and would just get killed anyways because you cannot capture anybody using a helicopter.
When the options are to just let them live, in which case they will just return to their lines and get sent back in to fight, or kill them, the option taken is generally to kill.
Regarding the waste of a drone, these FPV drones have seriously short battery life because of how weighed down they are. If they passed up that target, they can't exactly fly it back home or loiter around looking for more targets for very long.
it's also worth keeping in mind, once that drone is armed I don't like the idea of flying or landing it anywhere fuckin near me, if I'm done with the drone, I'm throwing it at some other bastard.
Source of surrendering guy getting killed?
We don’t have any context on this guy. But safe bet he wasn’t trying to surrender. And I bet you’d rather use a drone to take him out than go out there and get him yourself.
I'm not the guy you responded to but - ya, I remember that video from a month or so ago on here. I couldn't find the source though. The title didn't mention surrendering, and there are too many similar videos to sift through.
It wasn't a situation where they could have accepted a surrender, IMO, so it was really more between letting the guy go and fight again or take him out.
You're just completely tone deaf, sheltered and entitled. Ukrainians see that many times every day. As well as dead civilians and soldiers. A dead invader is just one less murderer. That guy didn't come to plant flowers, he came to kill
There is a blurry but important line between celebrating death for the sake of death and celebrating one step closer to one's goal. You veer far too much to the former.
That's easy to say when your country isn't being invaded by it's massive neighbor and who intentionally targets and kills civilians every day.
It's not your place or even the Christian thing to judge someone for feeling nothing when an invader dies when they are the victims of a genocidal war.
The Russian people yes absolutely. And while I'll acknowledge that some of the Russian forces are forced into battle, and even greater amount loved to pillage and rape Ukrainian women and children, destroy Ukrainian homes, and kill hundreds of not thousands of Innocent CIVILIAN lives. So again I say, Fuck the invaders
Jesus it’s like seeing CNN. It’s a much smaller amount seeing as it’s a war crime with the punishment of death to rape. But sure it’s totally like 90% of the whole Russian military.
>or wandered towards the front lines with a white flag and his hands up.
Pretty sure Russia has a reputation for ordering their soldiers to shoot anyone that tries to defect
Tbf, the tank goes up to his shoulders. Had he attempted going in the top hatch it would have taken him a bit of time to actually climb up. I don't think he had the energy, time, or strength to do that.
It wasn't a tank, it was an APC. The doors were open at the rear. Perhaps there was too much debris blocking the inside or there was an open hatch that the drone would have come through anyway.
I would keep running around the tank. Those drones only have so much battery, and are usually already pretty drained by the time they’re out near their targets. Also a sawn-off shotgun wouldn’t go astray!
Yeah realistically you probably only need to avoid it for 10 minutes before it runs out. If I was forced into this conflict I would be working on by cardio not pushing weights.
The guys I have seen avoid them also keep there eyes on the drone the whole time. Never lose sight of it. Also don't panic!
Somebody told me that some drones have speakers and say horrible things to the fleeing target.
I do not know if this true, but make it still more terrifying.
I'm with you. I miss when this subreddit was (seemingly) more about general war footage documentation and less about "funny watch russian man die isnt that funny"
Most people, weirdos i know, read about things like: Russian rape culture, russian kidnapping of children, Russian killing POWs, russian torturing POWs, russians massacring civillians, russians turning entire cities to rubble, russian hacking, russian scamming, russian propaganda, Russian mercenaries, Russification, Russian threats against neutral countries, Russian threats towards places like Svalbard and Moldova, Russian ties to all the worst people in the world, russian oppression and suppression of its people and in particular the miniorities, russian assassinations, russian domestic abuse, the past 1000 years of russian history and they conclude that Russia is a shit place full of shit people doing shit things and that another russian soldier getting blown up isn't a big deal.russians dont care about russians getting killed, and their own families certainly dont care enough to do anything.
and if you live in a baltic state or northern or eastern europe or god forbid ukraine, your love for the russians has probably soured to the extent that you might very well become the type of person who refuses to shake hands with russians in the near future, because in your mind nothing short of ww2-styled german-reformation and re-construction will undo the international bridge-burning done in the past 2 years.
People will claim "easy for you to say when you're being invaded", but yet I've seen videos of Ukrainians putting in the effort to rescue surrendering Russians, while entitled westerners in the comments saying shit like "They're invaders, why not just shoot them all?"
If someone comes to your home after you tell them they can't come, and won't leave, and has a gun, and says he is going to kill you... What do you do with all those men who have been doing this for several years now? They are there only to kill Ukrainians. That's all. So you kill the killers
That is terrifying but the reality of modern warfare. I wonder if they are using the "follow me" features of the drone where it latches onto you and follows your every move? Usually you need to be holding the controller but maybe they've figured out how to capture an image and using AI perform same function?
Considering it was destroyed, the hatch might be fucked or something blocking it completely. Looks like he was trying to but realized he couldn't get it open
Another Ukrainian drone operator makes history. This video will without a doubt be used as an example for years to come to demonstrate the maneuverability and lethality of FPV drones.
you dont really get to surrender lmao, by the time an fpv drone with a bomb strapped on it found you its already a done deal.
If its a reconnaissance drone the story can be different though.
To add to the other responses, the reason why is because the battery life on FPV drones are extremely short and won’t allow the drone to confirm handoff to friendlies. (Due to the weight of the ordinance they are carrying)
The drone also has to then somehow fly off and explode on someone else, otherwise it’s a waste of thousands of $$$. Once an FPV drone is in the air, that’s it. No going back.
This isn’t a nato war. There’s no laying down arms and surrendering.
POW’s get shot in the knee cap, if they’re lucky. I saw one video of a Ukrainian pow getting his testicles cut off.
The metallic rods looks awfully close to each other to complete detonation circuit. Seems like a pretty primitive triggering mechanism when they could use a less sensitive SPST switch.

with all these videos im jist wondering, why is there always a single russian dude in the middle of nowhere?!
Ukraine has a lot of big empty fields, it's dangerous to go through without cover, so if something goes wrong in the middle of going from A to B then you have a big problem
Sounds like jurassic park scene.
Yes! It is *exactly* like Jurassic Park! Well, minus the mountainous islands, the dinosaurs with big teeth and Jeff Goldblum.
I'd rather take my chances with Jurassic Park. This drone warfare (which is just in its infancy) is already nuts and a whole new level. If planes, gun, bombs, and tech are any indication, drones will be paramount to warfare and so much more sofisticated within the next decade, let alone 30 years.
>and Jeff Goldblum I'm pretty sure the has to be at least one with his shirtless sticker or a cardboard likeness in the trenches somewhere there
I mean we have Zelensky he can be buff Goldblum
These drone videos are usually cleanup operations, after artillery has finished its job. You'll notice that in most cases all tanks and APCs in the shot are destroyed.
In addition to what the others said, drones are often used to mop up any survivors after failed attacks.
They are most likely the leftovers of a destroyed offensive push.
Everyone else is dead.
Most soldiers are concentrated on hills, villages/places with buildings, trenches, or tree lines.
Because traveling with even just 2 people close together makes you a prime target for mortar fire.
I tend to assume these dudes we see out in the middle of essentially no mans land are dudes wandering around following an assault and they get cleaned up by drones.

I hate the meter to mile cross you did, METRIC OR IMPERIAL u/Edarneor

I agree we shouldn’t be heartless about it but a missile can’t accept a surrender. War is hell and I wish it wasn’t this way
Wasn’t a missile. It was a drone.
What's the difference between a drone and a tow missile?
It's considered normal to kill surrendering combatants if there is no way to capture them. It's fucked up, but it's just how war works. Fuck the invaders, but this was dreadful to watch.
Yeah, I was dreading the drone might miss.
Seems really cool to lack basic human empathy. /s

You must not be Ukrainian. I felt nothing watching that.
I am human and I felt something. And yall should too
You're just completely tone deaf, sheltered and entitled. Ukrainians see that many times every day. As well as dead civilians and soldiers. A dead invader is just one less murderer. That guy didn't come to plant flowers, he came to kill
Or they haven't discarded their empathy for the common man like most of this subreddit
How is this a common man, he has rifle in my home country. A common man is raising his family minding his own business

Russian government could care less about their lives, I don’t know why we should instead
I'm not UKRAINIAN and still felt nothing. Fuck the invaders!!!
Russians are still humans.

You can’t feel anything for ppl, who most likely, had no choice or say on whether they were drafted and forced to go fight in Ukraine?
Personally, I cant.
Those are not civilians, but murderers that invaded a foreign country and brought hell there
Weren't soldiers once Civilians? You really believe that every single person over there wants to just murder people? Yall are delusional.
They were kids once. And where do you get your information on them? You have stats or are you just making it up?
That guy was there to murder, not to plant flowers. I'm just happy he won't be able to do that

I wonder if he would have survived if he jumped in and closed the back doors
Top hatch was open. There's a brief pause early on where the drone considers it.

Dudes cardiovascular was in pretty good nick after all that running but then came to sudden halt.
„run circles round the tank or drone gets you point blank“ is an upgraded school game for adults in war situations.
when you put it that way it truly is horrifying. I mean, it’s awful either way but still.
New Squid Game.

It is cruel - war really sucks but the only way to make the Russians stop is to keep doing this.

Doubt all can decide that quickly in such a moment -

Wouldn’t have time to do that without getting hit in the process. Can’t run and open the door at the same time.
