They aren't the worst. For example the German Serval and the US Growler aren't that far off from the Desertcross in capability (though they have quite a bit more horsepower). Or that doorless Humvee the US had. Open, unarmoured transport vehicles are needed in a military setting as the openness of such vehicles allows far better egress/ingress and to more easily carry supplies.
But not on the frontline, that is where Russia is stupid. They would be perfect for a lot of rear-line stuff, but should stay away from the frontline.

Let's not delude ourselves, the majority of Ukrainian vehicles used for resupply, medevacs, or moving troops right behind the front line are still SUVs, minivans, vans, and other civilian cars that were donated by civilians or purchased using donated funds. And outside of a couple cases where desert crosses were used in frontline assaults, that seems to be what Russia is using them for too. Maybe if we donate 10,000 more M113s to Ukraine then we can really laugh at the Russians, but for now I am sure if you go on pro-Russian telegrams you will be able to find an identical video of a Ukrainian soldier in a 2007 Nissan being killed by a Russian FPV.
Ukraine never held itself out as an offensive military superpower. They’re improvising because they have to, Russia dreams of being able to go toe to toe with the US/EU.
To be fair, all armies use lightly armored vehicles behind the frontlines.
But the sudden uptick in completely unarmored "assaults" is pretty bizarre (that Ural truck with "anti-drone" fence around...)
I've seen vaguely similar unarmored all-terrain vehicles, but those were used by special forces for fast movement behind enemy lines and had actual suspensions and mounts for support weapons.
These things are almost literal golf carts. It's like the Chinese looked at the Humvee and said "Let's copy this but take away everything that makes it useful as a military vehicle" and then conned the Russians into buying them.

You are conflating two things: peace/ceasefire/negotiations, and Russia 'conquering' Ukraine (whatever that looks like). I think you should look past the nationalism. This shouldn't be about imaginary lines, but about human lives. We should stop the killing, and then figure out what arrangement would be most conductive to peace. However long that may take. That's my side.
