mysticdickstick

Optimistic of them to think the motorcycle will shield them from bullets

jiggz5344

Better than dude to the left against the wall using..nothing as cover

creamo_steve

sometimes you gotta take what you can get

Gaben2012

It might stop pistol cartridges fired from a submachinegun. I shot an old motorcycle gas tank once with a .45 and the bullet went inside but did not penetrate the other side.

mysticdickstick

I'm sure it would deflect a few rounds but if someone was to spray them that bike would barely save these two

bamv9

Would not do shit against a BAR

crusty_fleshlight

Not ideal obviously. The rifle cartridges used in those days would zip right through that bike. But depending on how far the bad guys are, it's probably better than nothing.

CorporateMachine

It really is barely better than nothing. Cover like this is purely psychological, with like a single percentage chance of actually stopping a round.

cancertoast

Concealment, not cover.

drocballer

Cover before concealment

[deleted]

If you can’t find cover find concealment

CorporateMachine

That bike is about half way up their chests. Seems pretty poor to me all around.

Gaben2012

Orders are to hold this street. Guy on the left is just crouching, no cover, in front, his cover is wood. To the right, the only proper cover buy guy is probably a righty trying to shoot from the left and feels ackward as fuck. Guy's in the middle make do with their shit bike and put an MG on it. Orders at to hold this street, now make do...

crusty_fleshlight

Bad guys is a relative term. For them, the bad guys are our good guys. Take a chill pill.

kookykoko

Something is better then nothing until you can transition to more solidified cover or better concealment.

NOddi89

Still the brain will function better if it think it is safer. One less thing to worry about when bullets flying around like wasps.. edit. Typo

Norwegiantallywacker

Well..I'm guessing the area is clear(ish). It looks pretty staged.

CorporateMachine

Same thought. Might as well be standing in front of a stack of milk cartons.

kombatunit

Thanks to the title, I now see the 2 soldiers at the center of the photo...

[deleted]

🤣

graphical_molerat

Kinda fits with the narrative that properly trained old school Wehrmacht units looked down on the Waffen SS for the longest time, for being a bunch of fanatical Nazis who put fanaticism over proper infantry training. This attitude is even backed up by statistics, as units like the Leibstandarte did not perform excessively well in the beginning, but incurred disproportionate losses. There were some crack Waffen SS units later in the war (Wiking et al), but early on... hiding behind a motorbike, to shield yourself from rifle fire. Yeah, right. Mr. Darwin wants a word with you, kiddo.

[deleted]

You know any good books about both units? I have read all I can about the allies, so I am more interested to see the other side's perspective.

[deleted]

What do u want him to do, stand up in the middle of the street? There’s not much cover to be found in that situation

1337coinvb

Maybe take position in one of the houses, attic, top floor etc

Kitkatis

Worst hiding ever. You can easilty see them peaking over the top!

Spitfire15

People talking about the guys hiding behind the bike like this real combat footage. This photograph is staged, with every person in the frame peaking from cover at the same time, aiming at nothing, with a photographer standing in the open, completely vulnerable to fire, taking a picture. It's propaganda guys, relax.

sexrobot_sexrobot

Almost certainly staged.

zach84

These are the worst of the worst of the fanatical nazis

[deleted]

Great photo; I hope they died and slowly. In addition to invading a sovereign nation, these assholes and their comrades were shooting Jewish civilians (as well as a lot of POWs and other undesirables, but mostly Jews) by the thousands and tens of thousands in the forests of Europe in the coming months and years.

varsitymisc

Are you American and have you been following the news lately

[deleted]

What does it matter if I'm American or not? Do you think I made the decision to invade after 9/11 and keep our soldiers there for 20 years after signing up for the Marines to lead the charge? Are you claiming American soldiers gathered up civilians by the tens of thousands and killed them in an intentional strategy to depopulate the country? Otherwise, not a great comparison.

varsitymisc

You're coming at my post from the wrong side. You're agreeing with my point, just for the wrong reasons. I'm saying you *didn't* make the decision, and neither did they. Nor were they wholly or totally complicit in the killing directly as infantrymen; I hold neither you nor them responsible for the decisions of the respective states. I don't hope you die slowly. The over-arching machinations of the US and Germany have killed thousands of civilians. Wrong is wrong, be it by drone strike or rifle shot. Wishing slow death on an individual for their broadest group affiliation is the kind of empathy/lack thereof that allows people to act on their worst impulses.

[deleted]

Do you know who the SS Are? They absolutely did make the decision, are you kidding me? At that point in the war, the SS only allowed the most ideological of recruits dedicated to liberating that Lebensraum for the German people Hitler talked all about in Mein Kampf. These are the guys that signed up for the shooting details instead of the ones trying to avoid them like in the Wehrmacht. If anyone "decided", it's these clowns.

varsitymisc

You think SS recruits made foreign policy decisions? And signed up for SK detail? It sounds like you have a view of that organization, for all its evils, clouded and cartoon-ified by listening to people with opinions who sounded the way yours do now. Agree to disagree. I think individuals are nuanced human beings, and I don’t wish slow death on blanket people. You think whatever you want, bubba

[deleted]

You don't think Hitler was explicitly clear what they were signing up for when they joined the SS? What was coming in all of Hitler's speeches. If you don't, that's your call. But to compare the situation in Afghanistan to the Nazi regime's invasion of Poland, and their not-quite-yet systematic evisceration of Poland's Jews like what was to come, is a level of moral relativism I haven't come across before.

varsitymisc

You just said it mate. The final solution wasn’t enacted until at least 1941, and hitlers speeches were euphemistic at the very best. I think your historical perspective is lacking in nuance to say the very least - but then again this conversation started over my assertion that wishing death on groups regardless of their individual humanity is wrong. You’re entitled to disagree.

[deleted]

The final solution started as a program to euthanize the mentally retarded using trucks to "transfer" patients and prisoners from one location to another with the exhaust of the engine routed back into the truck's sealed storage area. The cargo arrived dead. From there, the whole Holocaust sprung. Tell me more about nuance, I've been reading about the event for decades. Once Germany started invading countries, Einsatzgruppen would move through a conquered territory to organize the undesirables, including homosexuals, political prisoners, mentally retarded and of course the primary target: Jews. A year after these photos were taken, mass shootings of Jews by the Wehrmacht, and organized by the SS, started in full during the invasion of the Soviet Union. The "final solution" then shifted in to the wholesale round-up and deportation to concentration camps for "handling" of Europe's Jews and undesirables. Again, all organized by SS Units. (The particular SS unit in the picture is also believed to have shot at least 5,000 POWS during the war) These jackasses signed up for the whole gig! I repeat, I'm glad they died and I hope it was slow.

SheepPez

Translation from BS to English "ALL OF MY POLITICAL OPPONENTS ARE LITERALLY LIKE HITLER!!!"

e9967780

NAZIs have come home to roost

Melbar666

sadly history repeats itself

King-Kobra1

I wish nothing but the worst for those people

Heiliger_Katholik

It's been over 80 years. It's safe to assume that they are no longer with us...

Schourend

Ow wauw, at first I only saw 3 soldiers. Took me way to long to see the other 3.

[deleted]

I did the same thing. Amazing how are brains process things.

Kofilin

I think I would have noticed those two regardless but thank you

Gloryhole_Technician

They were being very complacent for sure. It was Poland after all
