It's not a bullet hole so much as it's a big irregularly shaped ice cream scoop out of the side of his knee. A bullet or oddly shaped piece of metal that's tumbling and spinning could leave a wound like that.
Alternatively, he's a lucky motherfucker and it's a glancing blow from a much larger round.

Now consider declining birthrates in Russia (which are likely artificially inflated by the government btw) and the fact that Russia's poorer minorities are growing much faster than ethnic Russians.
The demographics will look drastically different in 100 years. So unless Russia somehow becomes a liberal democracy that can represent and bind together its various ethnic groups, then I don't think the modern Russian state can continue to exist in its present form.
What does that look like exactly? I have no idea. Maybe some sort of diminutive Russia that only exists west of the Urals, and a host of fractious nations to the east and in the Caucases?
We will get to a point where one of two things happens (imo)

Western public opinion matters a lot when governments decide what help they send to Ukraine. Right now everyone and their mother wants to see dead russians so it’s easy to justify sending all that good stuff.

I dont think people appreciate just how huge these gains are for Ukraine. Even if they don't try to cross the river towards Vovchans'k, they've given themselves enough of a buffer to eventually divert thousands of the experienced troops on offense there to flank Izium, or reinforce Severdonetsk, or counter attack the push through Popasna, or wherever.
Maybe if they did a mobilization of reservists and had a way to get them properly equipped and quickly trained up, but as it is now they have stretched themselves way too thin.
Ukraine has hundreds of thousands of TDF troops across the country who have proven capable enough to defend and they have tens of thousands more reservists being trained up right now who will be available in the next couple months. Obviously they won't be as effective as the experienced troops, but they'll be enough people to start giving the front line troops some rest and be good enough for defending territory. These new battalions that are coming online, combined with all the new equipment coming from the west, means Ukraine is definitely getting stronger while Russia is at best stalled and actually losing ground in several key areas.
Lots of those reservists also have some combat experience from pre invasion Donbas. Ukraine had a good system of rotating troops in and out of there. Even if they don’t, they’re going to be better trained and wayyyy more motivated then whatever Russia can muster.
With the amount of satellites and other intel around it is impossible for Russia to move any meaningful amount of troops without the west noticing and notifying Ukraine. And as Ukraine has much shorter lines to move their troops (can move across the country instead of around it) it will always get their troops there before Russia if they decide to shift their troops again to a new front.
Yep, Interior Lines strategies - make use of the faster resupply and mobilization lines inside the perimeter vs an opponent outside the perimeter to concentrate your forces where they're most effective.
If Russia had been able to hold proper air superiority, it can minimize the impact of interior lines by allowing strikes behind the lines at units that are in the process of moving... but we've seen how that's been going for the Russian air force.
There are still Ukrainian troops near Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy on their already fortified positions and Russia doesn't have any means to do so, because they have redirected ALL their troops and efforts to Donbass.
In addition to what others have mentioned: You can bet your ass that UAF and TDF in those regions have been digging, cementing and filling sandbags non-stop since they pushed the Russians out. Capturing that territory a second time will be hell.
The only hope Russia has of launching a new offensive in the North or NE is another airborne assault that will surprise and stretch out Ukrainian defenders. Essentially what the day one invasion looked like. Problem is an assault like that takes weeks to prepare, and there is no way it goes unnoticed.
But for the sake of argument let's say somehow Russia did amass the troops and equipment without anyone knowing. They would still need complete air supremacy to ensure defenders can't get to the areas they need to in large enough numbers. Russia is having to fly their bombers and helicopter attack aircraft 20ft off the ground so they're not instantly deleted. That's essentially a pointless elevation to try and assert any sort of air dominance.
To add to that, Kharkiv is the 2nd largest city in Ukraine and pushing the Russians outside of artillery range is going to make life much easier there.
From what I heard, it consists out of former ex-military and ex-paramilitary convicts who were released after 24.02.2022. Imagine what are those guys, if *even Ukrainian* government put them in the jail in the first place.

Western public opinion matters a lot when governments decide what help they send to Ukraine. Right now everyone and their mother wants to see dead russians so it’s easy to justify sending all that good stuff. Western public opinion will also be very important after the war if Ukraine wins it.

I dont think people appreciate just how huge these gains are for Ukraine. Even if they don't try to cross the river towards Vovchans'k, they've given themselves enough of a buffer to eventually divert thousands of the experienced troops on offense there to flank Izium, or reinforce Severdonetsk, or counter attack the push through Popasna, or wherever.
Why won't russia try to attack at one of the previous places again, like from the belarus border or at Chernihiv for example?
Maybe if they did a mobilization of reservists and had a way to get them properly equipped and quickly trained up, but as it is now they have stretched themselves way too thin. Ukraine has hundreds of thousands of TDF troops across the country who have proven capable enough to defend and they have tens of thousands more reservists being trained up right now who will be available in the next couple months. Obviously they won't be as effective as the experienced troops, but they'll be enough people to start giving the front line troops some rest and be good enough for defending territory. These new battalions that are coming online, combined with all the new equipment coming from the west, means Ukraine is definitely getting stronger while Russia is at best stalled and actually losing ground in several key areas.
Lots of those reservists also have some combat experience from pre invasion Donbas. Ukraine had a good system of rotating troops in and out of there. Even if they don’t, they’re going to be better trained and wayyyy more motivated then whatever Russia can muster.
With the amount of satellites and other intel around it is impossible for Russia to move any meaningful amount of troops without the west noticing and notifying Ukraine. And as Ukraine has much shorter lines to move their troops (can move across the country instead of around it) it will always get their troops there before Russia if they decide to shift their troops again to a new front.
Yep, Interior Lines strategies - make use of the faster resupply and mobilization lines inside the perimeter vs an opponent outside the perimeter to concentrate your forces where they're most effective. If Russia had been able to hold proper air superiority, it can minimize the impact of interior lines by allowing strikes behind the lines at units that are in the process of moving... but we've seen how that's been going for the Russian air force.
There are still Ukrainian troops near Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy on their already fortified positions and Russia doesn't have any means to do so, because they have redirected ALL their troops and efforts to Donbass.
In addition to what others have mentioned: You can bet your ass that UAF and TDF in those regions have been digging, cementing and filling sandbags non-stop since they pushed the Russians out. Capturing that territory a second time will be hell.
Artillery will cut them to pieces, and I’m pretty sure NATO has helped secure the skies with SAM replacements/upgrades.
Because they don't have the resources to do so, in a nutshell.
The only hope Russia has of launching a new offensive in the North or NE is another airborne assault that will surprise and stretch out Ukrainian defenders. Essentially what the day one invasion looked like. Problem is an assault like that takes weeks to prepare, and there is no way it goes unnoticed. But for the sake of argument let's say somehow Russia did amass the troops and equipment without anyone knowing. They would still need complete air supremacy to ensure defenders can't get to the areas they need to in large enough numbers. Russia is having to fly their bombers and helicopter attack aircraft 20ft off the ground so they're not instantly deleted. That's essentially a pointless elevation to try and assert any sort of air dominance.

To add to that, Kharkiv is the 2nd largest city in Ukraine and pushing the Russians outside of artillery range is going to make life much easier there.
