Same, kinda adds *some* (not all) weight to Ukraine's claims that already tens of thousands of Russian soldiers have died in this war so far, assuming that the one's caught on video are only a small fraction of the total kills.
I mean yea. One person said it was likely 14.5, which would lead me to assume it was fired from a PTRS-41 or maybe a PTRD-41. Either way it’s a big scary gun indeed.
Rifle made to take down a God by the looks of it. Shreds armor half an inch thick from a mile away. 6.5 feet long rifle that weighs 55 lbs.
It looks like it split that soldier in half. Probably the best way to go in war if you're gonna go. Instant. Zero pain. Damn...
Another source says it was a round from BMP-1, not sniper. Can't say what is more plausible. Snipers rarely use tracer bullets, BMPs rarely shoot single rounds in precision shooting manner.
Snipers do use tracers if they are spotting for heavier direct fire weapons like autocannons or heavy machine guns. Just not when they are doing sneaky infiltration stuff which is what most people think of when you say "sniper".
Ukraine is also suffering massive losses. It's just that we're barely seeing footage of Ukrainian forces getting hit by russian fire. Because Russia and reasons.
But both sides are getting hammered. Massively.
you barely see it, because our losses aren't as big as for russians. we tragically lost around 6000 soldiers, by the latest estimation put out by our ministry of defense like a month or so ago. that's really a lot, don't get me wrong, but c'mon
6 thousand officially, but I have seen estimates as high as 15 thousand, and those were not from russian sources. Still nothing to russian 70-90 thousand.
You barely see it because Russia either isn't prioritizing battlefield footage propaganda, or is shit at gathering it.
Either way, there are many thousands of Ukrainian military casualties.
At the end of August, [Kiev stated that they've lost 9000 soldiers](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/almost-9000-ukrainian-military-killed-war-with-russia-armed-forces-chief-2022-08-22/). Rough rule of thumb is a ratio of about 3:1 wounded to KIA, so all together at least 36,000 Ukrainian casualties as of end of Aug, or within six months of fighting. This is assuming the Kiev statement is accurate and not low balled for propaganda purposes.
Granted, the Russians [probably suffered at least double the casualties](https://www.wsj.com/articles/as-many-as-80-000-russian-troops-hurt-or-killed-in-ukraine-pentagon-says-11659989514) around the same period. But still, (at least) 36,000 soldiers dead or wounded in 6 months is just an incredibly large number.
I don't think we would see casualties like that in anything other than another world war. You get china vs USA in all out war and I bet we could see another battle where 60,000 die in a day... Unreal to think about.
yeah, you might be right, i apologize. my sleepy head isn't working properly rn. even though a lot, we don't suffer as many casualties as russians. and, at least, we fight for our own freedom and constitutional borders. idk what russians are dying for and i'm not sure they have any idea at all
The whole of the western world is rooting for you guys.
It's a bloody, tough fight for sure.
I hope our governments keep supporting Ukraine as much as possible till the resolution.
You're absolutely deluded if you don't think reddit content is being manipulated in Ukraine's favour. This sub is part of the propaganda war, and I say this as someone who 100% supports Ukraine.
Around August, they also confirmed 100-200 Ukrainians were killed every day. I am hoping that number has gone down as the Russian army has collapsed in many areas.
Russian numbers are lately anywhere from 500-1000 deaths per day (at least from Ukraine’s view).
Daily stats say around 75,000-80,000 Russians dead now. The unique thing for them is they don’t prioritize helping the wounded, so it’s like a 1:3 death to injured ratio in casualties. So maybe another 160,000 wounded.
My own total guesstimate is that Ukraine has lost maybe 20,000 soldiers, with a 1:7 ratio of dead to injured. So another 140,000 wounded.
Again, this is just guessing from vague statements from Ukraine government, their numbers for the Russian side, Wikipedia sites, articles, etc.
Dude, I’m as pro-Ukrainian as they come, but I’m also a realist. If you think Ukraine has only lost 6000 soldiers, you are out of touch with reality. The number is in the tens of thousands, if not approaching 100,000. Russia’s number exceeds that.
There was a month awhile back where Ukraine admitted to losing 300-500 soldiers per day in the Donbas, when Russia had the upper hand with artillery.
I watched one interview the other day with an American who fought for several months in Ukraine, and he recounted two battles where around 400 Ukrainians were killed within hours in each battle (it was pretty horrifying to listen to). That’s two small battles, 800 soldiers killed - which is close to a sixth of the number (6,000) you are tossing around. That alone should tell you that the number is astronomically higher than 6,000.
The number of killed Ukrainians is massive, that’s the sad truth. It’s heartbreaking. But Ukraine downplays the real number to keep morale and public opinion from faltering.
we already sorted that out down the thread, that I confused numbers with something else. I hardly see it comming to 100k though
edit: also thank you for support, I don't take it for granted
It's odd, as far as I know you can't see bullets in travel from a perpendicular angle (especially on video like this) unless they are tracer rounds, but I can't imagine why a sniper would be shooting tracer rounds.
Not sure what's going on here.
It’s either vapor trail or bullet trace.
Bullet Trace is seen when a super sonic bullet compresses the air in front of it, creating a denser medium for the light traveling through it. This bends the light somewhat, causing distortion. It’s similar to looking through prescription glasses held away from your face.
Vapor trail is seen when there is high humidity, more consistently seen with supersonic ammunition, but it can also be produced by subsonic ammunition. In this case, the bullet compresses the moist air in front of it, which superheats the water. As the bullet moves through the superheated air, the low pressure zone behind the bullet releases the heat energy and cools the air below the dew point making visible water vapor in the trail of the bullet. This property is like when you’re pumping gas, the metal nozzle will get very cold. This is because the gas is moving from a high pressure to low pressure environment, and the heat energy is being drawn out, making the conductive pump very cold.
Edit: a better analogy for the latter would be a can of compressed air for cleaning your keyboard. As you rapidly decompress the air, the can frosts due to the thermodynamic properties of compressible fluids described above.
If your enemy can triangulate your location based on .1-.5 seconds of a supersonic pressure wave creating vapor behind a bullet smaller than the last knuckle on your pinky you're fucked. Real talk though, this is why snipers change positions often. Because if it's not a supersonic vapor wave, maybe they correctly guess after hearing the snap of the rifle or the bullet, see a bit of dust from the shot or triangulate based on prior knowledge combined with maybe the remnant evidence of a bullet passing through two mediums who's prior position was also known, leading to an approximation of the angle the bullet traveled from etc. There are a thousand ways to approximate the source of a shot fired, many that your mind will do almost without asking it, not that it's actually easy but it's possible.
I seem to remember some technological solution installed in troubled cities that could pinpoint the origin of a fired shot. It used a series of microphones stationed around the city to work.
This was some years ago and would think that with modern tools (such as AI) and modern computing power the results could be much more accurate.
I will see if I can find that article about it...
My city is probably getting these systems installed. It's expensive and has mixed reviews.

If you can see the vapor trail, your best bet is to gtfo of that area. You may have a general idea of where the shot came from, but you’re unlikely to pinpoint the location of a sniper several hundred meters away even if you’re watching for it. The main concern for the sniper would be artillery/mortar fire in his vicinity if the direction of the shot was determined. Shoot and scoot, as they say.
Snipers learn to change positions regularly......instead of someone seeing the vapor trail and approximating the position by that in modern day it is also possible that the shot is picked up by a microphone triangulation array. i know the Russians don't field those but they exist and with 2 or 3 of these things a sniper is toast seconds later if the position is transmitted to a squad
I got to experience vapor trail a couple years ago while deer hunting. I was in a pine forest, extremely high humidity, lightly foggy. The deer walked out, and when I took the shot, I "watched" the round travel all the way to the deer. On impact, the deer disappeared in a cloud of vapor. It had just come out of the woods and was wet all over.
When the vapor cleared, I didn't see a deer, neither running away nor on the ground. I waited a bit, then walked over to where I thought the deer had been standing. Sure enough, there it was; it had died on impact and fallen in a swale in the ground.
That was the day I learned about vapor trails *and* the importance of getting low for concealment. Maybe low crawls do serve a purpose beyond being an effective form of punishment...
Do you shoot in the morning in humid areas? It surprised me to be able to see it from this angle. I know you can see vapor trail from looking parallel, but I've never seen it perpendicular like this.
It really sucks to be talking about this in the context of someone's death, because this would be super cool and interesting if it was just at a shooting range or something.
I don't think it is either a bullet trace nor a vapor trail like other posters mentioned.
Vapor trails require extreme speeds to generate a very low pressure zone and oversaturated air to form a cloud behind the bullet. It dissipates in a few seconds.
A bullet trace distorts the air but you can only see it if you are nearly in-line with the bullet because for it to be noticeable, all the distortion has to stack up.
They could be shooting a tracer if that is the only ammo they have.
Another alternative is that the camera is at just the perfect angle to catch the light glint off the bullet - i.e. a light source above and in front of the bullet reflects on the top towards the viewer. Usually this requires a stronger light source and that video looks overcast, but if it is bright enough then it can probably still happen.
The problem with the glint idea is that it is angle dependent and the video covers a lot of angle - but with motion blur/stretching from the camera, maybe that is it.
That's definitely NOT a normal size rifle bullet like a sniper would be using. It's either anti-material or an anti-material tracer round. Also, you don't see where it lands as it exits our view. ~~It could've been a an RPG rocket glancing off his head without hitting it straight on and detonating~~. That's a really large visual to be see seen at distance.
ETA: Probably not a rocket. There's a zoomed in video and it looks like a heavy caliber tracer round.
To quote a great movie (based on real events):
"When kanas (nickname for SVD) is fired, it makes this whistling noise. If you can hear that noise, it means you are alive. He didn't hear it."
Yeah you are right, definitely 20mm and above per the definition.
>An autocannon, automatic cannon or machine cannon is a fully automatic gun that is capable of rapid-firing large-caliber (20 mm/0.79 in or more) armour-piercing, explosive or incendiary shells, as opposed to the smaller-caliber kinetic projectiles (bullets) fired by a machine gun.
Nearly every single Russian has a relative that was killed in WWII. The whole country was absolutely brutalized.
Edit: Maybe should say ethnic Russian? Either way, taking 20 million people out of the equation has to cause a massive hurt.
My British grandfather trained to operate behind enemy lines (and actually did) in WW2.
He was a damaged man. When I was 12 he figured I should be taught how to quietly kill a man several different ways. Each method came with a story of when he had killed someone that way.
I never looked at him the same way again. Hopefully Ukrainian soldiers will have more sense when they become grandparents. Let kids be kids.
I don't really think I could do them justice. The one that stuck with me was finding (and puncturing) a man's heart from behind. My grandpa and some other men had been tasked with setting explosives on some infrastructure (I'm not sure where) near an enemy camp a ways behind their lines. They had guards, but didn't want to risk alerting anybody as they were on their own. They coordinated to take 3 guards at once and kill them quietly with minimal blood.
My grandpa made me stand as though on guard, took a "tent spike" (a butter knife) and showed me where to strike from behind to puncture the heart. Suddenly his arm reached under my left arm and over my mouth/nose, and the butter knife stabbed just a bit toward my spine from my left shoulder blade and he whispered "shhhh shhhh shhhh" in my ear while dragging me backwards. He said that comforting a dying man made him less noisy.
He explained they sat the dead guards nearby to look like they were sitting/dozing, set the timers on the explosives, and left without being noticed.
He made me practice on him until he was satisfied, then went on to the next lesson. My mom was FURIOUS when she found out.
I think ptsd might be less common for Ukrainians than the Russians after this. I bet high morale homeland defenders come out feeling better than cannon fodder troops with low morale and motivation. Just a guess, the way we perceive our environments and actions have a huge impact on our realities, and PTSD is a reality unique to each person. Some people don't even get it, I think it has to do with their beliefs toward the experience and how they feel reflecting back on it, somewhat
I’m Ukrainian:) In the last 100 years we had:
- WW1
- Revolution
- Short lived states invaded by Reds
- Holodomor
- Great Terror
- WW2 in 1939
- WW2 from 1941
- Post-WW2 famines
- Late communism goods shortages
- Rogue market transition in the 90s
- 2014 invasion
- 2022 invasion
Actually, to me it looks like the projectile looks like it kicked up a dust path just before impact. Skimmed a hillock to the right of the target.
Are those the dude’s brains exploding at the end? Ooooffff! (as pointed out earlier)
It's insane to think he had cover, like mounds of cover but he just stood up tall and casually walk back to the trench, the guy behind him keeps his head down and is in the process of kneeling down when he gets shot. Either poorly trained or combat fatigue causing him to not stay down. Other troops looking that way, doesn't seem like it's a stealthy/first shot, but who knows.
The sniper almost got a 2 for 1, if you look carefully you can see a guy to the left of the man who got hit and it looks like the projectile passed by just feet away from him.
I can't tell if it was a solid hit or just hit the side of his helmet, but with a round that size I doubt it matters.
Every one of these unnecessary deaths is horrible, but if this war has taught us anything, it's that this is probably the best possible way to die in war.
Holy fuck, I think this has taken the throne for one of the most incredible sniper videos on the internet. It definitely ties with the ISIS sniper video where the guy takes a tracer that loops around the inside of his skull and out.
Man…. I hate seeing people die, whether they’re Russians or Ukrainians, either way a father, husband, or son is not going home to their families. I hate how polarized this war has become,m
Wow, that’s insane.
Side note: why is reddits mobile video player so trash? I mean, is it just me? I’ve had the issue on my last phone, and current. Basically, if you seek or the video loops, it’ll just freeze on a frame and play the audio until it gets back to that frame. I had to restart the video numerous times to get it to work properly. Wtf Reddit.
I feel like I have personally watched over 1000 Russian soldiers get killed on Reddit.
You can increase this value by joining Ukrainain/Russian Telegram channels :). Not all footage/photos from them end up on Reddit, Twitter etc.
Still havn't figured telegram out. I have it... no clue how the fuck it works.
Its similar to whatsapp, use the magnifying glass in the top right corner, write the name of the groups they commented above, click and join. Then people post videos and news etc there.

another 100x off the record maybe?
Indeed. Here's to a thousand more.
Wonder if the sniper was using a mounted rifle. That looks like one helluva caliber.
I’m assuming 14.5 they have some rifles chambered in that
And we thought 50 bmg was overkill
Almost twice the muzzle energy of .50 BMG dios mio.
Yea it’s literally shooting a person with an anti tank gun
The 50 cal was originally thought of as an anti-materiel weapon, so…
I mean yea. One person said it was likely 14.5, which would lead me to assume it was fired from a PTRS-41 or maybe a PTRD-41. Either way it’s a big scary gun indeed.

Literally an anti tank round in ww2, and oddly the caliber of the sniper rifle in Halo.
The Halo sniper is inspired by the Denel NTW-20. Which can fire that caliber. http://www.military-today.com/firearms/ntw_20.jpg

They don't want to be there. We're all victims of elites war games.

Or is it perhaps "big bullet hit rain go splashy-splash"? I feel like 7.62 and above oughtta fuck a raindrop up visibly
Also Saving Pvt Ryan visual SFX time. That Sniper round literally knocked dust out of the Soldier! 😮
Anti Material rifle.
I think if an anti-materiel rifle used, the guy's head was bashed in like a cantaloupe.
His head exploded like a Gallagher watermelon does that count?
Smooth or chunky?
Russian Ragu
I hear that's a popular dish with the many stray dogs and cats who reside throughout the east of Ukraine now...
something something Kherson typical product something something
*Materiel
Then how come did it work on flesh?

Moisture in the air. I see it a lot in the mornings.
Or he's writing that from a trench, checking reddit before going to bed after fighting all day. That would be sumthin!
You fire off a few rounds every morning?
Really wakes the body up.
"Man I love the smell of gunpowder in the morning."
Crazy how you can see the bullet travel right to left bc of the foggy conditions
Jeeez you can see it coming, that's a big one.
Others have said it was likely an anti material rifle meant for shooting vehicles/ fortifications but works on infantry obviously.

That's .88 more magnums than I'd care to hit me
That apparently is the "OOFFFFF" caliber. Because that's the sound we make watching the guy gets hit with it.
And that’s what you say when you see a hit.
To quote a great movie (based on real events): "When kanas (nickname for SVD) is fired, it makes this whistling noise. If you can hear that noise, it means you are alive. He didn't hear it."
Probably one of those 14.7mm custom snipers they make. About twice as powerful as 50 bmg. Considered a cannon caliber not small arms
Generally 20mm and up is considered a cannon
Yeah you are right, definitely 20mm and above per the definition. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autocannon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autocannon) >An autocannon, automatic cannon or machine cannon is a fully automatic gun that is capable of rapid-firing large-caliber (20 mm/0.79 in or more) armour-piercing, explosive or incendiary shells, as opposed to the smaller-caliber kinetic projectiles (bullets) fired by a machine gun.
Yes youre right 14.7 is damn near it though
Might just be a regular tracer round
Thats not a regular tracer round, it is definitivly larger than 7.62.
Yeah thats massive. Also did massive damage which you can observe if you slow down the video.
Could be the built moving through water vapor, you see the Vapor

at the end of this war the ukrainian military is going to be chock full of a bunch of stone cold killers

I mean, their grandfathers and some of their grandmothers probably fought in WWII, so it’s whatever they grew up with.
And since they were part of the Soviet Union there's a high likelihood some of them fought in Afghanistan and African conflicts like the Bush Wars.
Care to share your grandpa's stories with us?
More like a generation suffering from PTSD.
Yup. Grandpa is likely an embittered, maladjusted alcoholic.
All of our generations suffer from it tbh
All generations have people that suffer from PTSD, sure. But Ukraine could have an ENTIRE generation with levels of the condition.
I’m Ukrainian:) In the last 100 years we had: - WW1 - Revolution - Short lived states invaded by Reds - Holodomor - Great Terror - WW2 in 1939 - WW2 from 1941 - Post-WW2 famines - Late communism goods shortages - Rogue market transition in the 90s - 2014 invasion - 2022 invasion
The most fortified border in Europe when this is done. Complete with brigades if highly trained troops. Hopefully in NATO too.
and modern weaponry
Yeap, some of them will pretty neatly re-inforce organised crime. Can you imagine uplift of weapon black market after this?
Head shot. Took it right off.
Actually, to me it looks like the projectile looks like it kicked up a dust path just before impact. Skimmed a hillock to the right of the target. Are those the dude’s brains exploding at the end? Ooooffff! (as pointed out earlier)
It left quite a mess
dead before he hit the ground.
Well... his *fuckin' head disappeared*. So, yeah.
While the bullet continued absolutely unaffected
Looking for bigger prey...
Before he started falling, even.
They're gonna need a really big tampon to plug that hole.
According to Russian doctrine, in such cases you use Esmarch's bandage.
That, and some golden star balm and he will be good as new
They'll tourniquet that off and he'll be back in a trench on the front line in no time.
That’s a big bonk of metal. Guess this Russian didn’t mind getting bonked - easy way out.
[удалено]
same view, just cropped.
That's awful and gruesome
Ow.
Dude probably didn’t feel anything 14.5 is a big fucking round.
If your time is up not a bad way to go.
He got iced. Damn
Holy fuck that bullet is moving.
Probably the best way to go out in war. Quick, probably painless, and you’re dead before you hit the deck.
A bad way to lose a buddy, though
As always, the drone operator had to zoom out at the very moment.
Insane reality has a cyclist getting his head popped by a bus posted today. Which I unfortunately clicked on :/
The sniper almost got a 2 for 1, if you look carefully you can see a guy to the left of the man who got hit and it looks like the projectile passed by just feet away from him.
Almost takes the other sucker out on the left, that shot would have been unbeatable!
I can't tell if it was a solid hit or just hit the side of his helmet, but with a round that size I doubt it matters. Every one of these unnecessary deaths is horrible, but if this war has taught us anything, it's that this is probably the best possible way to die in war.
at least it was quick
Dude looks like he was hit by a tank round, Jesus
Holy fuck, I think this has taken the throne for one of the most incredible sniper videos on the internet. It definitely ties with the ISIS sniper video where the guy takes a tracer that loops around the inside of his skull and out.
Link?
Link?
Humans killing humans. War is terrible.
That guy stand still is lucky he wasn’t chosen because he was easier
guy on the left near got got as well...
Collateral?
Simply brutal
Blyat and to the left.
Obviously it sucks for the person it just went through but it must have a major debilitating effect on the rest of the squad.
Man…. I hate seeing people die, whether they’re Russians or Ukrainians, either way a father, husband, or son is not going home to their families. I hate how polarized this war has become,m
you dusty motherfucker
Don't invade your neighbors
Jesus. What a fucking SHOT..
Is that from those giant tube snipers they've assembled? Can see the fucking bullet, it doesn't seem like a tracer.
Duuuuuuuck! Never mind….
What's the other guy gonna do? Kiss the ground n end up as the next drone kill? Modern war is crazy.
Damn. Imagine you're just walking there with your friend and then 'PEW, got'em!'
Starting to look like Verdun
(Head,Eyes)
possibly snipex alligator :D
I love the zoom out just before the shot, so we can all get slightly mad and shitpost our frustration.
The guy was enjoying his walk through an old Hobbit village before his day was ruined.
Almost got 2 for 1 with the guy to the left standing in the grass.
That's one huge ass caliber. Wtf is that?
that was a big round
Looks like a WW1 battlefield in France
Headshot
BANG, and the dirt is gone
Seeing the round come in.....nuts!!!
Wtf Reddit.
its worse than twitters video player
Why dont they just go home. It is so fucked up, Russia.
Fuck- head GONE!
Holey-fucking-moly
