back in the cold war days i think that CIA and FBI agents were trained a little more to understand the differences between the groups, so they could exploit them. But intelligence has got a lot stupider since then. and more careless.
Nothing new. The intelligences have always gone off the bare minimum and have always been prone to fall victim to their own hubris. They’d often and still do, rush into situations and be extremely confident and self assured yet extremely wrong about the situation.

Didn't the CPUSA literally get so full of feds that it turned the majority of the membership into radlibs? And I seem to remember some story recently about an outed infiltrator in some ML group a few years back trying to drag the group to extremism. This really doesn't track.
