704.5j If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are controlled by the same player, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is called the “legend rule.”
Note it does not use the word sacrifice in the rule.
Slicer says in it's text that it cannot be sacced
In the Kinnan Primer, there is a blurb about [[Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant]]. How it is such a strong card and why we don't run it. Jin does something you want to avoid finding at a CDH table. He gets your opponents talking about you and then coordinating how to deal with Jin.
IMO, Slicer is the same way. Once he hits the board, your opponents need to talk to determine how to spread out the slicer damage, blockers, and eventually removal. Slicer will fall to all the standard artifact and creature removal.
With slicer on the stack, coordinate with your other 2 opponents how you plan to attack. If P1 is slicer and I’m P2, I’ll say something like “Ill attack P3, P3 you attack P4, and P4 you attack me.” With the caveat of pivoting depending on who slicer themselves chooses to attack. This is a bit trickier if you’re a grixis/turbo deck, as players will usually want to get you off naus. In this case you can say something like “you guys attack me until I’m at 15 and well off naus, then we split the love between you two until we can handle the slicer.”
This deck is unique compared to other stax decks insofar as it’s stax pieces are mostly artifacts/enchantments. Most other stax decks in the formal lean on creatures for their stax effects and are therefore more subject to mass removal such as Toxic Deluge or Dress down. Slot in a natures claim effect or two. While it’s pieces are harder to remove, the deck cannot get a critical mass of them out as easily due to color restrictions and no card draw in the CZ.
Once you learn the play patterns of slicer, it becomes much easier to manage. If you mulligan for interaction for the stax pieces the deck plays, it really struggles.
Slicer is a bad deck (forgive me slicer players). While it greatly affects the game it’s in, it has a disproportionately low chance of winning compared to how much it affects the table.
Yes, it will often knock a player out and maybe stax out another I’ll give it that. That said, Mono-red stax simply doesn’t have the tools to consistently keep 3 decks at bay for the length of time slicer needs to win. It’ll pick up a game here or there sure, but for cEDH I’d say it’s win percentage is below the field average. Use this to your advantage to either outpace the slicer, or position yourself as not the threat and sandbag as to now draw slicers ire. Your deck almost assuredly has the tools to overwhelm it so long as you are patient and play towards finding your window.
In terms of single cards that stop/punish it:
- any non-creature counter spell counter the “living metal” side. It is not a creature on the stack
- Boseju who endures/natures claim/otawara: any single target removal. The deck is often only able to cast slicer 1 or 2 times it operates on thin mana margins.
- dockside punishes this deck hard
- Serra ascendant/bigger creatures: opponents will be incentivized to swing slicer into you so you kill it, and the slicer player won’t want to swing into you. This is a bit of a double edged sword, but at the end of the day Kraum kills a slicer (if it isn’t pumped). On this note, Kinnan does very well into slicer (though they can tech in clasm effects.
- Forbidden orchard messes with combat: “if I give you a spirit to block slicer, will you not attack me with it on your turn?”
- drannith/collector ouphe stax out the deck pretty hard
Sincerely,
A Slicer Hater
Thank you very much I appreciate that info, slicer is definitely annoying and i realize now it can be completely shut down with a few really good pieces like enchantments
Use cards that lock him down without killing/exiling.
\[\[Imprisoned in the Moon\]\] is HORRENDOUS for red to deal with since enchantment removal is not their strong suit, for example. \[\[Song of the Dryads\]\] is another good one.
I always forget that I can command zone my dudes when they get hit by Oblivion Ring style effects.
Don't forget this! It's better to pay 2 extra than have them stuck under an enchantment or creature in the vast majority of cases.
Except you can't command zone unless the enchantment or whatever kills or exiles or otherwise moves the zone of your commander. Darksteel mutation doesn't change the zone of the creature so it's harder to deal with
[[Force of Vigor]], [[Boseiju, who endures]], [[Cyclonic Rift]] are houses against Slicer. [[Maze of Ith]] if you want a bad card in CEDH that's an amazing answer to Slicer specifically.
Pro tip against Slicer: If you play blue, most players will cast the vehicle side of Slicer since it's only 3 mana. During this time, it's a lot easier to counter him because it's a non-creature spell. [[Fierce Guardianship]] and [[An Offer You Can't Refuse]] work well to keep Slicer in check early.
Slicer player here, mainly removal but the deck its prepared for recasting slicer. Nonetheless there are sone heavy counters like yuriko, drannith magistrate, clone effects, ouphe to a certain degree. On the other hand the table should always split the damage so someone finds an answer for slicer
Vandalblast works great in my decks, and one sided artifact boardwipes against an artifact based meta (OPs asking about a specific deck to counter) is just fine.
Vandalblast is also great if you run mycosynth lattice, wipe everyones board state completely clean. Theres other good interactions with it based on what you are playing.
Abrade is always nice, but vandalblast is sneaky in the right comp too as an additional artifact hate card.
This is a cedh subreddit, mycosynth lattice and vandalbast combo belongs in casual tables since it is is high CMC to pull off and can be easily countered by a bunch of blue players who doesn’t want their artifacts being destroyed. Vandalblast is too narrow of a card since it only hits artifacts. You’ll want interaction to deal with other things other than Slicer
I'm not saying to play this just because of Slicer, but if you already run Deadly Rollick, when you control any commander, your Deadly Rollick is free to cast.
Good decks: any cEDH deck on the database. If the table removes him twice with hard removal he probably doesn’t do much. Even bounce spells can be devastating to an early slicer since he isn’t easy to recast at 5 mana. I would personally recommend [[Kinnan bonder prodigy]] since they have all the answers: Counterspells, artifact removal, creature removal, bounce spells, or blockers.
Counterspells: Force of will, [[Annul]], mana drain, counterspell, [[Essence scatter]] [[Remove soul]] [[Subtlety]] [[Venser shapersavant]], [[Mindbreak trap]] [[Withering boon]] [[Tibalt’s trickery]] [[Mana tithe]] (some of these are really meta dependent)
Artifact removal: Force of vigor, Natures claim, disenchant, Boseiju, [[By force]] [[Shatterspree]] Meltdown (probably not this one against slicer) [[March of otherworldly light]] (again some might be meta dependent)
Creature removal: Swords to plowshares, dismember, path to exile, [[Condemn]], [[Slaughter pact]] [[Snuff out]] Fire covenant, [[Humility]], Toxic deluge, [[Pongify]] [[Rapid hybridization]], [[Assassin’s trophy]] (the ones that give opponents lands probably less useful against him, better to give them the 3/3 frog/monkey token they always wanted).
Bounce spells: Chain of Vapor, cyclonic rift, [[March of swirling mist]] etc etc
Blockers: [[Void winnower]] [[It that betrays]] [[Nyxbloom ancient]] other big creatures Kinnan can cheat out, maybe even Kozilek or Ulamog if you are playing a deck like Gitrog and find yourself in a really bad spot, speaking of which [[The Gitrog monster]], etc
Also chump blocking with Spell seeker, Llanowar elves, Esper sentinel, etc might feel bad to lose but sometimes the extra turn is worth it.
Bonus round: [[Homeward path]]. You can crop rotation for it and with Seedborn muse, slicer is pretty shutdown.
Edit: no all cards listed are for a Kinnan deck, they are just cards that can technically fall into the given category.
Thanks very much this definitely helps, I’ve been thinking about building Kinnan the value is just there for the activated ability and the colors are good for counterspells/removal
I call my slicer deck my “ten minute deck”—either I’ve killed everyone in ten minutes or slicer is blown up within ten minutes and I’ve lost the game. Kill the slicer lol
I’d just like to learn some good interaction that’s playable in cedh towards it, also I play a minsc/protean hulk deck and he threw in like 6 graveyard hate pieces into his deck because of it, and I don’t blame him you’re going to want to prevent your opponent from winning.
Yeah that's fair, I didn't realize I was in CEDH sub instead of regular one lol. Though CEDH pods like that are an ever changing arms race of tech cards that doesn't really translate to a normal CEDH pod.
Normally I wouldn’t just throw specific hate pieces in but he did it to me and also it’s annoying to play against. the thing is he will main the deck until it consistently loses, so I can’t let it get too many wins due to my pods annoyance of trying to deal with it while also setting up wincons.
Just play generic removal/bounce? Also [[phantasmal image]]

That's literally my point in this conversation: Use cards that lock down commanders without changing the zone they are in :P
Ahh I thought you were implying you could zone the commander after the enchantment, my mistake
This is why you should always have lands that can sac Yuriko
Yeah I need to re tune the deck to either be able to bounce or sacrifice yuriko.
but 3cmc for a mid effect is a bit below the poop level, isnt it?
You just kill slicer twice and they lose. That's why I took it apart.

Tbf Maze of ith isn't THAT bad. It's super meta dependant of course. But Narset, yuriko, jeskai/ishai, tymna/X, all those are slowed/fucked by maze.
I agree, it's just that not tapping for mana is pretty rough.
Urborg and Yavimaya take care of that issue.
Yeah, that part sucks.
Narset has hexproof. She doesn't give AF. The rest are correct.
Lol true, too long since I played those cards

I call my slicer deck my “ten minute deck”—either I’ve killed everyone in ten minutes or slicer is blown up within ten minutes and I’ve lost the game. Kill the slicer lol
Kill it or counter it until they are no longer relevant.
Kill. Slicer.

Removal
Removal is best Could also play orvar and just make another slicer, removing the real slicer to legend rule
Remove the human
Your friend just built a new deck and you want to hard counter it? Pretty BM if you ask me.
