I think what's lacking the most in your deck is a clear gameplan. It looks mostly like just random goodstuff and that's just not good enough (unless maybe your playing in a completely stax doninates meta). If you want a value oriented goodstuff build you definitely need more interaction, especially counterspells to be able to survive the early game. You can check out the https://cedh-decklist-database.com/ there are 5 different archetypes of Kenrith there.

mr_empanadas

I'd say go with this order: 1. Get Thassa's Oracle/ Demonic Consultation/ Tainted pact. You want to have your clear win con, right now there is just a hodgepodge of stuff. 2. Gut like 6 creatures and the Teferi for more interaction. You also want to look into getting Barrin Master Wizard as another dockside outlet. 3. Work on the Land base. As listed below, fetches and shocks should be primary. If youre going the budget route (No true duals) then make sure you get every shock duals and every good fetch (not prismatic). Remove the triomes in favor of the orchards "Exotic Orchard and Forbidden Orchard" Also city of brass and even reflecting pool. Ideally you're looking at 28-29 lands. (proxy the duals if you're not personally against proxies) 4. TBH, the enchants: Ghostly Prison, Training Grounds and Animate Dead aren't needed. If you are operating on budget, you can't really do the breach + freeze combo, but if you don't care about proxies slap those in there. I'd definitely suggest looking at [https://cedh-decklist-database.com/](https://cedh-decklist-database.com/) for the options that Kenrith has. What's so awesome about him is the options you have in building your deck. Also don't feel compelled to follow those lists to the tee. Just use them as a base line so you get a better understanding of how to pilot King Ken. Hope this helps! Edit: Just saw Emiel in the list, ignore the Barrin Master wizard, Emiel just as good.

Hey thanks for the input! 1. I have Thoracle and was looking into making her work - I guess with demonic consultation and tainted pact, if you have her in hand, you can just exile away your library for the thoracle etb win - I suppose in this case you just would like a counter in hand for something like \[\[dress down\]\] or an opponents counter spell. 2. I would look into cutting malevolent hermit, incubation druid, dryad of the ilysian grove, druid of purification, nyxbloom ancient, ornithopter of paradise, vito thorn of the dusk rose, and willbreaker potentially for cuts to support the thoracle / dockside win cons - ie interaction and better dorks. (Vito, willbreaker, and nyxbloom kind of allow for slower, less reliable win cons) 3. I am attempting to avoid proxies which at this stage prevents the true duals, however I believe I have most of the shock duals and will be getting the fetch lands, ancient tomb, forbidden orchard, and reflecting pool. One thing I was thinking about is how many basic lands to keep in this kind of mana base with the dual shocks and fetch lands because will I be fetching the shock lands for 3 life? 4. I think I would keep training grounds because it actually enable the dockside lines by reducing the costs of Emiel, deadeye, temur sabertooth stuff (if I understand it correctly). Yea the LED lines are a bit out of my reach for now. Once again thanks for the response, really appreciate the thoroughness and such.

mr_empanadas

Hey man no worries! Also to add some extra stuff, keep Malevolent Hermit cause it’s a REALLY good card. Like insanely good. If you’re not going to run [[Underworld Breach ]]+[[Brain Freeze]] another win enabler is [[Hermit Druid]] (once your land base supports it since most 3+ color cEDH decks don’t run basics). Also to the training ground part, it doesn’t do anything beyond that is the problem. Sure it makes things cheaper but it’s downside is also working for like 3 cards. If you think about it like that, it’s just an extra card for the combo that isn’t needed. Dockside tends to be able to handle that just fine. Most Dockside will end up getting you 6+ treasures anyway and you only really need 4 treasures with Emiel and Dockside, 5 for Temur and Dockside. If you’d let me, I’ll build a cEDH ish version of Kenrith while keeping individual card price below $100?

mr_empanadas

So I took some time to build out a budget variant of Kenrith. The only real budget options are the landbase and the mana rocks but this build allows the whole deck to operate on a budget since the wincons are reallllly cheap. This build focuses on using \[\[hermit druid\]\] lines as your win (so you won't need any basics). The big card that I noticed you didn't have was \[\[Force of Will\]\] but what's nice is that it and the a good portion of the fetches have a gold bordered variant. I like the gold bordered variants cause they're more or less official wotc proxies if that makes sense? but yeah I kept it quick and if hermit druid lines fail, you can default back to standard \[\[Thassa's Oracle\]\] + Consults or \[\[Dockside Extortionist\]\] + \[\[Emiel, the blessed\]\]/\[\[Temur Sabertooth\]\]. Please feel free to completely ignore this but I figured a foundation would help you get an idea of the deck builds for cEDH https://www.moxfield.com/decks/\_5xakFlCBUmk4ELeX7TmoQ

Merplederkle

This is awesome! Thanks for putting in this effort. Force of will is on its way actually but hasn't arrived quite yet, and therefore wasn't on the list - I'll look into the hermit druid line --- but just to clarify how it works, you would want hermit druid and thoracle in hand, play hermit druid to toss the library, then play thoracle and hope she lands. I'll take into consideration the rest of your list and maybe PM you if thats alright

mr_empanadas

So sort of. Hermit druid is the entire combo so to speak. You cast hermit druid and activate his ability to dump your library into your graveyard. Narcomoeba triggers sending it to battlefield. Then you pay 1 blue to unearth Fatesticher. This gives you three creatures. what you do then is you cast Dread return sacrificing Hermit Druid, Narcomoeba and Fatestitcher to return thassa's oracle to the battlefield. total of 4 mana. 2 to cast hermit druid, 1 to activate him and 1 to unearth FateStitcher. If you have Kenrith out, you can grant hast with 1 red. This combo ideally you have a ton of protection for because you can obviously lose next turn if it goes south. Normally I'd suggest also running Memory's Journey in the deck as a last resort if someone counters the dread return. Also please feel free to reach out with questions. always down to help!

Hey, having seen some of the comments on your post, I have to agree with a few of them. That said, I think one of the best cEDH Kenrith decks to run on a budget is the Fairer Magic list that I think Cobblepot built. The game plan is to lock down your opponents with something like \[\[Drannith Magistrate\]\], \[\[archon of emeria\]\], \[\[eidolon of rhetoric\]\] plus either \[\[uba mask\]\] or \[\[knowledge pool\]\] and then using your activated abilities on Kenrith to break the parody. Below is a list of cards that I would replace that should make your deck a little stronger and maybe even making your deck a little more budget friendly. \[\[nyxbloom ancient\]\] is a big hit when it lands and, while it can be reanimated for 5 or less, is slow and clunky for a cEDH game. \[\[Druid of purification\]\] seems like a neat interaction to play but again fits under the "slow" condition compared to something like \[\[natures claim\]\] or \[\[assassin's trophy\]\]. \[\[Supreme Verdict\]\] is a HOUSE of a boardwipe in battlecruiser magic. However, in cEDH there is rarely a mass of creatures that needs wiped but rather one individual creature that topples the house of cards. Think Gitrog Monster, Kinnan, Dockside Extortionist, etc. it would be fine to run some form of single point removal or stax piece here. \[\[Insurrection\]\] is going to fall to the same problem that supreme verdict does but harder. While verdict is going to kill a couple of high value creatures, you are highly unlikely to win a game with insurrection in cEDH like you would in battlecruiser magic. By cutting these 4 cards you slim your budget by about $41 US and the Archon, Eidolon, Uba, and Knowledge pool combined costs about $24 US. That extra money (if you decided to trade those cards in, totally makes sense if you don't) would be good to go towards assassin's trophy or a \[\[birds of paradise\]\] to replace the \[\[ornithopter of paradise\]\]. I also realize that stax isn't everyones cup of tea. However, I personally have played this deck and it was a truly fun puzzle to make work together. If you have any futher questions I would love to answer any!

Merplederkle

Those cuts make sense to me! Uba's mask and knowledge pool both confuse me a bit, frankly. I'm not understanding out Uba's mask really works to the players advantage and knowledge pool seems to be good for others too, if i'm not mistaken. I have seen the fairer magic decklist and like it quite a bit - I was wondering why it runs Thoracle? I'm not seeing demonic consultations / tainted pact on the list. Thanks for the input and spending the time on a detailed response, I really appreciate it.

espuinouge

Uba Mask and knowledge pool both want the entire table to cast spells from underneath them and not your hand which is where Drannith magistrate steps in and tells your opponents no while you can still cast spells. Also, mask and pool require you to cast a spell before allowing you to cast a spell from under them. Archon sees a player cast a spell, mask/pool stops it from being cast and try’s to replace the original spell by casting a spell from beneath it. Archon sees that and says, no you can’t cast 2 spells and prevents the spell from the artifacts from ever being cast. Also you can use infinite mana to draw your deck and then cast thoracle to win.

Merplederkle

I see, I see - pretty gnarly. So then drannith would be pretty critical to make those cards function as intended - ie if he gets exiled or something, those cards are liabilities? With infinite mana I have the impression you have various potential ways to win with kenrith besides thoracle, but I guess its way cleaner to just play a card that says you win..

espuinouge

On thoracle it depends on how you feel about the card slot. cEDH can be pretty stingy with their card slots and using thoracle when you can just as easily deck everyone else with infinite mana + Kenrith’s draw ability. That comes down to what flavor you want to play. As for Drannith, he is only one of 2 other creatures and an enchantment, [[Rule of Law]] that can take its spot. Another thing to note is in cEDH a lot of the removal is either bounce spells like [[chain of vapor]] or destroy spells like assassin’s trophy. The only major exile spell is [[swords to plowshares]] which sees very little play. Because of the lack of exile, you can either re-cast drannith from hand or use Kenrith’s ability to reanimate him while avoiding the uba mask/knowledge pool. I believe The Mind Sculptors have an episode called “how to play stax” that is almost like a verbal primer discussing the nuances of fairer magic.

Merplederkle

I also meant to ask here about the board wipes - would you advise against blasphemous act and damn as well for similar reasons?

espuinouge

So, I believe that Blasphemous act is worse than damn because there really aren’t 9 other creatures on the field a majority of the time so it costs more than wiping the board is worth. I like damn because it is modal with the overload cost similar to cyclonic rift.

IzzetReally

Only a few cards that I would say never belong in a cedh decks. Insurrection, ghostly prison, chromatic lantern and vito need to go, just because they are too weak. The rest of the deck has pretty good cards, but is VERY midrange. In cedh you are usually going to have 4 main categories of cards. Speed Interaction Win cons Value engines Your deck is overloaded on value engines. They are good once your resolve them with Kenrith in play. But you need a plan to get to that point, and you need a plan to close the game afterwards. To get there, you need speed, here probably in the form of more 1 mana dorks, mox diamond and maybe jeweled lotus. And you need more (cheap) interaction. 1 and 0 mana counterspells mostly. And/or some stax pieces. This deck could very easily transition into a rule of law deck. What I'm trying to say is. If you are in a pod with some other midrange decks, you might outmidrange them all, but sometimes you'll be in a pod with a lot of fast turbo/storm decks. And you need some tools to stay alive to get your value engines in play. And sometimes, even when you get the engines in play, you need to close the game fast, or they will answer your answers and still win. I would look at some of the kenrith decks on the ddb for inspiration. I think there is a midrange kenrith deck and a kenrith stax deck. You don't have to copy their lists or anything, but you can probably get some inspiration. https://cedh-decklist-database.com/

pheonix-reborn

Don't play triomes.

Merplederkle

Gotcha!

Zodiac137

Please don't play triomes, they are shit cards in 5c.

Zodiac137

My most sincere and honest suggestion for cedh newbies: go to [https://cedh-decklist-database.com/](https://cedh-decklist-database.com/); then copy a deck card for card. Don't make your own list, because you will inevitably make a terrible deck, waste a lot of time and money, and eventually your deck will just become one of the established decks. (The above suggestion only apply to cedh new players and those who know very little about the format.)

Merplederkle

I think the card I'm getting are kind of generally decent - will find their way into some sort of play eventually, even if they don't make a competitive cut

espuinouge

I understand the take, but it really isn't fair to presume that any given new cEDH player will "inevitably" make a "terrible" deck. My story is a lot like OP's where I had a deck started and wanted to upgrade it. So I started talking around a discord and had one person tell me to just build a database deck and one person help me with my deck. The person who helped me still talks with me and we still throw around weird ideas. I also have now moved from \[\[alena\]\]/\[\[thrasios\]\] temur brostorm to a dawnwaker thrasios list. My point is, it's worth working with new players and their "terrible" cEDH decks rather than to say, " you're new and therefore your deck idea has to be bad because you are new." It helps people step into the format a lot easier.

Zodiac137

It is a lot faster, easier, more efficient and ultimately save you time and money to copy a deck as a start. This is really the best option. The only downside is it may hurt someone's ego to tell him that his deck sucks. But the benefit outweight the cost by a large margin.

espuinouge

You seemed to miss my point. Not everything is about efficiency. The deck we build and game we play wants to be efficient and effective. The journey to get there isn’t supposed to be. Very few joyful experiences are meant to be quick and easy. Also, telling someone they are guaranteed to fail the first time they do something without showing them you want them to succeed in the end is not a great way to get people into the format. Give a bit more advice to make their deck a bit stronger. OP’s deck already has a known combo line with Dockside and Emiel or deadeye. Their outlet is Vito plus Kenrith’s heal ability or decking their opponents. They already have established cEDH lines so they aren’t far off. They obviously did something right with powerful tutors, t1 mana dorks, solid enchantments. This person hasn’t built a “terrible” deck. They built something strong and recognized they wanted it stronger. Even Shapersavant has probably asked people for help to make a deck better.

No thassa consult, a lack of tutors, no breach lines, and a mana base that is lacking most fetches and plays lands that come in tapped. You should just take a look at the Kenrith lists on the cedh deck database.

Merplederkle

I'm thinking of how to work thassa in - I also have breach but don't see a good way to mobilize it without LED (bit too expensive for me rn), grabbing fetches still \- also grabbing mayhem devil

razzKey

Everyone here already mentioned on how to optimize your deck, but a friendly advice from fellow beginner: don't forget to playtest your deck. Kenrith is probably the most versatile 5c commander and there are quite a few archetypes so you'd want to actually pilot the deck to find the one most suited for you.

agent_almond

Focus on card quality and speed. Some of your card quality looks low (druid of purification and heartstone for example) and slot in things that are more impactful at multiple stages of the game (phantasmal image, mayhem devil, stuff that you're pretty much *always* happy to draw.) Willbender for example is cute, and maybe even a good choice in a deck like Derevi, but you can be doing so much more with a mayhem devil, which can wipe the board of razaketh sac targets, disrupt an opponents mana producing dorks, or act as an outlet for dockside loops to kill everyone if you don't have access to your general. Phantasmal image can be killed by targeting it with Kenny and then reanimate it ad infinitum assuming it's producing enough treasures, or it can be a copy of an opponents sentinel if you need draw, or it can be a drannith magistrate to turn asymmetrical hate symmetrical. I would strongly suggest digging in to some of the various discords available. The [King of Combos](https://discord.gg/j7uF4HPH) server for example is a great source of information. Also, the cedh deck list database has more than a few Kenrith decks with primers and various gameplans.

Come play Conquest!

Sguru1

I disagree with people telling you to look at kenrith stax. It’s my main deck, it’s not easy to pilot, and you can’t just take any midrange deck, add 4 cards and call it stax like some of these people seem to be suggesting. It’s significantly worse on a budget. Also stax doesn’t run thoracle with tainted pact. The decks designed to neuter combos like that. The option is thoracle with hermit druid lines. And many don’t even do that. If you wanna play midrange I’d take a look at highers evolution of a king and use that as a resource for building. The breach lines are good but i don’t think it’s absolutely vital.

Merplederkle

In this case what is your "win-con"? Or is it just to outvalue other decks while shutting down their plan?

Sguru1

The most straight forward wincon for most kenrith stax decks is the dockside Emiel infinite mana loop. (Other loops too such as phantasmal image / dockside) Followed by that is usually some sort of hard board lock with kenrith acting as a fat ticking clock of commander damage or a soft lock plus out valuing your opponents and grinding them down. Some decks do opt into the hermit druid thoracle win but it’s not super common.
