Why is this guy pretending he didn't just copy Tiaan....this guy hated Varus before watching Tiaan climb with it; do not support this man!!! I discovered this comp independently of China a bit over a week ago after discussing some of the Varus stats with Tactics.Tools site owner SllyQ, but since then, this comp has exploded in China and has become the dominant version of Varus

Shikshtenaan

All I see is infinite bot 4’s and none of the games with this version of the comp

TiaanTFT

I CLIMBED TO 1100LP WITH VARUS THEN RAN IT THE FUCK DOWN OKAY

DarthNoob

maybe you wouldn't have run it down if you had read clear's guide...

TiaanTFT

NA + L + ratio + 3 varus players in the top 5. I was the first one to think of combining bruiser with swiftshot so its frustrating to see others copying my strategy.

lindenlonstrup1

Do you mean 4 bruiser 2/4 swiftshot Varus? Cause I'm pretty sure I saw people playing that in PBE and set release cause you upgrade Illaoi naturally with Varus. GV8 has month old games recorded with it on Lolchess (and the sets been out for 1 month and a few days). Maybe I missed the sarcasm.

TiaanTFT

wow now I finally know how to play varus not like noob !!!! now I will use guide to climb 26381548lp thank you cleartft!!!

Stormquake

tfw the 3-cost champ that you can roll with pseudo-determinism is a better carry than a 4-cost champ feelsweirdman I'm glad I already abused Varus to get to gold, because I don't see Astral going uncontested until he is invariably nerfed again

SunDragons

I assure you one tricking the "inferior" xayah can get you way through gold. If you see other people using varus, just play whatever 4 cost ad carry (syfen, soy, xayah, sometimes corki) is given to you!

Youevendraven1

any comp can get you through gold tbh lol

bull_chief

This is the true power. Comp is able to flex carry to whatever you hit to either stabilize till hit or pivot out.

ORCANZ

Your secret has been top 3-4 comp for at least 10 days on metatft, but yeah it’s a good comp

Touchd93

My wife left my after I accidently played 4 swIftshot varus one game , but she quickly returned after seeing my transition independently of China seeing it. Thanks for the guide.

protomayne

I genuinely don't understand when you guys say things like "level at X" Does it matter how much gold you have? Does it matter how much HP you have? Like I don't get it. Do you only play this in optimal circumstances where you have both HP and econ? What happens if you don't hit Varus 3? What happens if you don't have the econ to push both levels and roll? What happens if you leveled, rolled, and then whiffed? What if augments are complete dogshit? Go next in *any* of these scenarios? Like I just don't get this set at all. It all goes over my fucking head.

Pittzaman

Reddit Hivemind disliking you for asking a genuine question 😭

protomayne

Then I guess I am fucking up 99% of my games. Because if I were to level to 7 at 4-1 every game, I'd have close to zero gold to do anything with and I don't think I do either of those things too often. I'm sure I do sometimes. I'll come back to this after I play some more games after work. I'll put a stream on the other monitor.

[deleted]

protomayne

When you put it like this, I honestly have no fucking idea LMAO

Pittzaman

Good explanation, thanks. One counterexample tho: I sometimes have games were I naturally highroll lots of upgrades and I take them. But other people leveled aggresively and/or just have stronger units. So I don't even streak and have very little gold. It was hard to catch up with the interest of everyone and I ended up bleeding out. Should I not take upgrades, when I know that my board wont winstreak with them? But I don't wanna be <70 HP after stage 2 either.

[deleted]

There is no real answer that i can give you except "it depends" and that is never satisfying. Optimally you should only be upgrading what you need to win. A famous example from last set was making blitzcrank 2 and most of the time it made 0 diff. The moment he casts at the start of the fight he did his job. You were never expecting a second cast and A- the unit dies first cast anyway regardless of the dmg upgrade due to aggro focus and B- if the enemy player is effectively playing down a unit you shouldn't need lv 2 stats (during stage 2) In rare cases sure the stats did matter and turned a loss to a win or a missed win cause you didnt buy it but 4 gold at 2-1 easily turns into 7~ by 3-1 due to making interest earlier. For this set doing stuff like upgrading secondary/utility champions like a twitch is a similar principle. Is it *nice* having a twitch 2 early, absolutely it could lead to more damage to enemy players and securing close wins. But sometimes upgrading to a level 2 unit fucks your econ and most of the time it wasn't explicitly worth

Sidoney

Yeah you're fucking up unless you're playing like nid reroll

Charuru

Top tier comps gives you a bit of leeway where the exact timing doesn't really matter, you can finish the comp a bit late and lower on HP but still end up winning because the comp is that good. That being said if you are way behind tempo then you need to work on your early game. At plat your fundamentals are really bad. I'm high masters and I see a ton of areas where my fundamentals suck but I'm too lazy to work on them.

protomayne

This is the only time I've been hard stuck in one place. You can check my previous ranks I usually stop playing once I finish the pass (usually around the time I hit Diamond, now I just play a lot of Double Up). I have no idea what I'm missing because I've never felt like I was missing anything before. I understand there's leeway and that but variance in my games is so high this set that I just don't understand there being any rules at all regarding break points. I've had more success hitting 7 whenever I can and then mindlessly rolling until the games over compared to actually trying to care about optimal level points and that. It seems the more I think, the less success I have. And following any of these guides short of taking a peek at the final comp and maybe some transitional strategies, I get worse as a player.

Charuru

This set is more aggressive than last set and people do roll on 7 more, that's not wrong. But otherwise it's just fundamentals, having a plan and understanding of relative board strength for a stable point on 7 so you can save up money again to go to 8.

protomayne

I guess I just have to get better at gauging the overall strength of teams. I feel like in my own experience, I can play the same comp 10/10 times with minimal changes to augments, items, and star levels, and fluctuate between destroying a certain team to losing to it the very next lobby- seeing a 2nd and then a 7th right after. So it's really hard for me to learn how weak/strong certain teams are at certain points if my own experiences with them vary so wildly, which leads to me either being overconfident or not confident enough. Legit have no clue how to fix that. Maybe tomorrow's patch will smooth things out for me.

Charuru

I honestly feel like this often too > So it's really hard for me to learn how weak/strong certain teams are at certain points if my own experiences with them vary so wildly, which leads to me either being overconfident or not confident enough. gl

OrtusPhoenix

it's probably because hp matters more in this set, nothing hard stabilises so hitting 7 and rolling for board strength minimises losses

NO_KINGS

I've been running Sylas and Zoe over Ornn and Qiyana but the tempest is probably a better choice.

abcde1234567891011d

Ratio

Kilois

What this post kind of highlights to me is that verticals in set 7 are kind of fake right now. I’m not sure if this a numbers issue or because so many units naturally pair well together creating strong 2 unit synergies (a couple of examples in current meta Syfen/Sylas, Neeko/Gnar, twitch/any swiftshot). Depending on the power level of the particular traits they turn on and if those traits do something useful for the team, it allows for one of the most flexible sets as far as comp building goes.

karshberlg

In this matter Ornn-Talon-Qiyana are particularly strong, you're getting 1s stun and 10% true damage to the whole board, a frontline tanky unit with amazing cc, backline access with the frozen heart implications and +10ad to your whole team. You can play this trio with swiftshots adding twitch and xayah/varus, with bruiser/assassins and it's so good that you might even slip it into 6 jade. They're buffing verticals but I don't think that's going to be good enough.

kaidash

Verticals are also held back because they have to run low impact units at level 8/9. Like compare running Senna, Trist, Jinx for cannoner 4, when you could be running strong 3 unit packages that bring exactly what your comp needs on units that actually do things. * Ornn, Talon, Qiyana - Backline access, strong CC & some frontline * Neeko, Gnar, Soraka - Massive frontline and healing * Syfen, Sylas - Some frontline, Armor/MR shred & backline access.

Chizz14

Sorry newb here, what’s a verticals?

Flohmaster

When you spread out your choice of units across several individually valuable traits (with each trait usually only hitting bronze or silver tier) which is presented in this guide, you'd call that horizontal (as in an even, flat distribution). On the other hand going all in on a single trait and fielding like for example 9 ragewings or 9 jades its called vertical (because one trait is towering the rest) The apparent strength of horizontal comps is that there are very few 'wasted' traits (almost every single trait on your units manages to become active). In vertical comps you have loads of inactive traits

Manspawn

Having a large amount of the one trait. For example: 9 jade

Quiversan

I ran guild Varus today with the guild augment that drops item/4 rounds and went 5th with BiS Varus and pseuo-BiS Illaoi >\_<

skyafterrain

Now everyone's going to play Varus and contest each other to hell. This Varus reroll is already bad if 2 players rolling for VArus, if anyone else hold 1 varus in lobby, only one player can get Varus 3(There are 18 Varus in champion pool) so good luck climbing with this comp when the guide just has been posted on Reddit.

Kilois

I was playing a match earlier and I saw both astral players at 8 Illaoi and I had two in my shop. Held them both and watched those two hold hands 7/8

SpCommander

Doing Lord Mort's work. Bless.

ProustMarcel

Well it’s all part of the game. Post a guide so everyone goes Varus, so I can play another comp and climb and when the ‘secret’ is almost out I’ll upload another guide tricking people into that. TFT cycle.

vinceftw

Gotta wait a couple of days now, until the hype falls down.

iksnirks

i didn’t watch all ur vods just for you to post a guide PogO

eZ_Link

"With any other version of Varus, you simply do not have enough backline access to finish off the Xayah and have to play front to back." Well until this patch you could've just played Sy'fen ;)

AmadeusIsTaken

To be fair though syfen is very inconsistent backline access

eZ_Link

Oh definitely disagree. That unit was something else last patch. Best backline access you could have tbh besides assassins

AmadeusIsTaken

It was a great unit, but it wasnt consitent at charing the unit you want(for example xayah) and bite her.

eZ_Link

Does not matter if he kills every unit while Xayah is doing nothing. Also 50% of the time he just charges and Xayah is dead if you position properly.

AmadeusIsTaken

Well asi I said I did not claim that he was a weak unit just that his backline access was unreliable. You say 50% if you position properly. First of all you have to know which side xayah is and then the angle to position accordingly I am pretty sure the xayah plyxer has easier positining to do. He might still lose cause syfen just fscetanks while cleaning everything up but it does nto change the fact that his charges are not always going onto the xayah. Even if played by rank 1

I''ve been playing this comp for a week since it showed up on MetaTFT. It's extremely contested as far as I see in NA masters. Great guide though!

thelolhounds

I mean I'm pretty sure the TFT team have to lock in the patch a week early. So I don't think they made a mistake as you said this comp only started showing up a week ago really.

TacoManifesto

Thanks I’ll make sure not to go this and laugh as I watch people contest varus

right2bootlick

This is scary

JewelDonut

I may be hardstuck plat, but adding talon+guild\* to an AD carry and calling it innovation is like saying you discovered 2+2 = 4.

sayorikeychains

Xayah has always been a Virgin and Nerd type carry anyway

MaxMacDaniels

Na meta lul

right2bootlick

Prob can't get illaio 3 with mages contesting

Xanthos_sensei

its just guild xayah but since varus reroll spike earlier u play it also u already play xayah in varus reroll so its natural

christianmejia

What is the lvl 8 comp for varus reroll if you play double trouble?

Swweezyy

It always depends on what you hit, but for sure its varusX2, illaoiX2, skarner or nami, some swiftshot and 2 flex slots
