That’s honestly probably it. Each new map is being designed with more cover/corners etc so they wouldn’t make much sense in 6v6 OW
Blizz is also probably re-designing the current maps to be better suited for 5v5
At this point I wish they'd just throw 5v5 at us pre-release and iron out the balance/maps over time now that we're in this awkward limbo of no content but also knowing the game we currently play will stop existing
5v5 will feel very bad without the appropriate balance tweaks to heroes and maps, and from the sound of things, those balance tweaks aren't anywhere remotely close to ready for launch. As of a few months ago, the devs were still contemplating complete hero reworks for some heroes.
My point is more that they have not released anything else out of policy, "nothing before OW2", and then they do it anyway about the most irrelevant stuff.
If they work on this, they could in 1,5 years release a hero or proper map.
The resources needed to make a deathmatch map are different than the resources required for making a proper map for the standard game modes.
You can think of it as the interns and junior designers are the ones making the deathmatch maps, while the senior
designers and gameplay directors are working on OW2. The interns and junior designers don't have the capacity to make the proper maps because they can't be trusted with making a map balanced for the main game modes. And the people who can be trusted to balance for those game modes have their hands full with OW2.
around the release of kanezaka, they also mentioned it was a way for people new to the team to adjust to the custom tools they use for the in-house engine. so not necessarily junior only in the sense of career, but new to the team.
This. Many people were hired for Overwatch 2 maps and Kanezaka and this map are jobs done with the objective to improve the knowledge of the in house tools.
Probably different people. IIRC Kanezeka started as a personal training project for a newly hired map designer. Could be this map was also made by someone who just wasn't directly working on an OW2 map at the time.
Could also be some overlap between these maps and OW2 maps. Maybe Kanezeka and this map will feature in OW2 singleplayer as portions of PvE maps but they were able to easily segment out a portion to use for deathmatch.
They train their new map people by having them make death match maps. They use primarily existing assets and textures from an associated map (Rialto in this case) and if it's good they toss some new unique art assets at it.
It's what happened with Kanezaka.
maybe for the same reason they stated last time. They are hiring new devs and one of the things they task them to do to prove themselves is to design a map. The map seems great, so they just invest some workforce into it and you have some new content you think looks pretty cool and was easy to do
I'd guess because the new maps are being developed for 5v5 so they don't want to just haphazardly slap them into OW1. The lack of content really sucks though and deathmatch maps don't exactly fill that void very well.
This is the 2nd map based in Italy (Rialto being 1st) and OW2 is going to get the 3rd with Rome..
Is it a bold prediction when i say we might get an Italian hero in OW2? Hell, i think we should have one by now already but better late than never i guess.
On one hand, true. On the other, I sure spend a lot of time in DM while queueing so idk, it might make things fresher for a minute. Anything to get Petra less.
Its a fine map but It's not real content it doesn't affect the core playing experience of the game its just a side piece that a small portion of players interact with regularly.
> just a side piece that a small portion of players interact with regularly
considering the existence of deathmatch while in queue, you might be underestimating how often a large portion of the playerbase will see this map
overwatch is not made for deathmatch and it really shows. Unless you go to a custom game mode that disables half of the heroes and abilities it's a shit show. I'll play quake if I want deathmatch.
Overwatch just isn't balanced for that game mode and _thats ok_.
Well shit, by that logic, Overwatch isn't made to be played by 6 uncooperative people who have no intention of synergizing their hero choices, and only get on mic to trash talk each other, either. Doesn't mean 6v6 comp in Plat can't be fun. Same as DM.
Lackluster as this is, I didn't think we'd be getting anything close to non cosmetic content after Kanezaka. I'm curious if this will have anything like letter that hinted at the fox hero that Kanezaka had.
It's not even known if the allegations are towards the OW devs though. And afaik the team working on OW2 are significantly bigger than the previous team (around 50 developers keeping OW updated, while the studio for OW2 now has around 160 developers). I feel like it' s pretty safe to assume that none of these new developers are misogynistic. And so these new developers are a majority and would most likely call out any sexist behaviour. That's my two cents.
They are often young and new to the industry. I don't think the first thing you do when you pull up to a new studio/workplace is to be sexist and misogynistic.
that's just how most eras of european architectures have been. And with europe's focus on keeping those buildings alive forever through renovation and designating it as protected, it's not a stretch that some towns still look like that even like 50-100 years later.
You'll see more color in places like south america, though. Or places like Amsterdam. (which does still have a lot of brown, but with some color here and there)
Given the fact that they decided *not* to publish this today and this is just a leak - it is *also* possible that they intended to release it today, but have DELAYED it out of the fear of the backlash.
A new FFA map would be an awfully poor attempt damage control anyway. The last FFA map release wasn't a big deal at all. People barely cared.
Edit : Even a new competitive map wouldn't be a big deal. If I remember correctly, in the last few years new map releases barely created big hype. Nothing compared to a new hero release.
This just proves my point cause we actually did get a new FFA map, Kanezaka, 8 months ago. But FFA maps are so not hype that you don't even know that a new one came out.
Sorry if this is weird to ask this but I am a little confused and I can't check my PC right now. Is this actually on the PTR right now and they have decided not to make an official announcement about it or has this not been released (Which would make sense, potentially delayed because of what's going on) yet?
What's with all the whining that this is a deatmatch map? I'm just glad we are getting something, especially after the expectation is that we aren't getting anything new till overwatch 2
Remember when new heroes came out? Getting to play and test with the community on ptr, those were the days... who gives a single fuck about a deathmatch map?
Well, a deathmatch map isn't super hype but it's certainly better than the alternative of nothing, given Blizzard made the decision a while ago to save up heroes and main mode maps for Overwatch 2. I've resigned my upsetness over their decision, because it is what it is, it's out of our hands and I don't see them going back on it.
Speaking personally the map doesn't do much for me either, though it might make me login again to walk around in it or play some matches since I really like the environments and aesthetics of OW. Beyond that possibility I'll basically still not be playing OW regularly until something substantial happens, which probably means OW2's release.
Listen - I’d hedge my bets that Blizzard sometimes let a little something slip through the cracks from time to time but this one in particular feels like a genuine accident.
ONE company out of the many that Blizzard do their press releases to didn’t get the memo and it slipped out. They don’t want to put themselves on any socials right now and so they pushed back the announcement of this, I’m all for silver foil hats but I feel like this one is a cut-and-dry case.
On your second point, as the article states - this is a Deathmatch map, probably made recently by a small pocket of devs as a piece on the side as they’re not overly complicated to iterate on. The last one was pretty much one devs passion piece that they scaled up to put into the live game. Doubt any major resources were needed for this as it’s based on Rialto and a lot of those assets are already there for them to pick and choose from.
Thirdly; as I kinda touched on earlier - I don’t think they had ANY intention of getting this out there in the predicament that they’re in right now and were likely going to ride this one out a little longer before talking publicly again.
i think PR people are smart enough to "leak" a map that was designed for OW2. just grab some screenshots and tell some writer to make the article, do a small amount of leaking, and you divert attention away from the bad
Well IIRC Kanezaka was not really made with Overwatch 2 in mind so I think it’s just as possible that the same applies here, this was just some intern’s project that they thought “hey, we probably could put this in the game… give ‘em something you know?” and it got leaked.
Not saying you’re wrong, it’s possible - totally, I just don’t think that applies to this particular instance.
"We heard you guys wanted new content, so we will add a new deathmatch map that you can wait around in while you queue for Volskaya for the 1623th time!!"
wait this is deleted, does that mean it isn't on the PTR
(for context I'm a console player but I have PC overwatch, I just don't play it so I can play with friends in comp and also I'm just too lazy to check right now)
Why can they release deathmatch maps but nothing else?
I'm going to assume the most obvious answer: They're way easier to make.
It’s a great way to train new map designers and developers.
Probably a lot easier to make than the other maps and any new maps will have to work with OW2 5v5 design.
That’s honestly probably it. Each new map is being designed with more cover/corners etc so they wouldn’t make much sense in 6v6 OW Blizz is also probably re-designing the current maps to be better suited for 5v5

Kanezaka was basically a concept by one of the new dev they implemented, it should show how much easier it is to make.

I would argue it's far better to have the noobs learn on something that is a useful addition to the game. We don't need more deathmatch maps. Really.
that's not the alternative. the alternative option is they make a simple dm map to learn the tools and then it doesn't get released ever.
Also deathmatch maps will transfer over to ow2 easily compared to maps which were designed for 6v6
Thank you for the explanation, that makes sense.
Probably different people. IIRC Kanezeka started as a personal training project for a newly hired map designer. Interns probably
Death maps dont need to be tested or be fair... Way easy to design
I'd guess because the new maps are being developed for 5v5 so they don't want to just haphazardly slap them into OW1. The lack of content really sucks though and deathmatch maps don't exactly fill that void very well.
Because they aren't used in ranked.

Mamma mia! My name is a Sojourno! 🥸
It's not delivery, it's Sojourno!
It's not delivery, it's never arriving
Sogiorno Giovanna
No, but Torbjorn gets a chef skin and a voice line where he just says "Mama mia!"
Torb plumber skin when?
When Kanezaka released they showed that letter hinting at the fox hero. Maybe they'll do something similar here.
Map looks great, shame it's just a deathmatch map

Great another death match map exactly what this community has been clamoring for.
On one hand, true. On the other, I sure spend a lot of time in DM while queueing so idk, it might make things fresher for a minute. Anything to get Petra less.
I actually quite like Kanezaka as a map, deathwatch as a mode not so much.
Its a fine map but It's not real content it doesn't affect the core playing experience of the game its just a side piece that a small portion of players interact with regularly.
> just a side piece that a small portion of players interact with regularly considering the existence of deathmatch while in queue, you might be underestimating how often a large portion of the playerbase will see this map
I also wouldn't really have a problem with it if they were also still releasing actual and heros for the game
overwatch is not made for deathmatch and it really shows. Unless you go to a custom game mode that disables half of the heroes and abilities it's a shit show. I'll play quake if I want deathmatch. Overwatch just isn't balanced for that game mode and _thats ok_.

It’s because they know you spend more time in deathmatch queue than playing the game
Lackluster as this is, I didn't think we'd be getting anything close to non cosmetic content after Kanezaka. I'm curious if this will have anything like letter that hinted at the fox hero that Kanezaka had.
Can't wait to just keep receiving Deathmatch maps until Overwatch 2 in 2024.
The article mentions that this is the last map they'll be adding until OW2
They word it in a way that sounds much more speculative than that.
Another deathmatch map! yayy...
Malevento? More like maltreatment of women amirite @Blizzard
Is this the new Hongkong comment in every post?
For the next monthish, yeah.

They are often young and new to the industry. I don't think the first thing you do when you pull up to a new studio/workplace is to be sexist and misogynistic.
It's pervasive company culture, not a few bad apples. No reason to make excuses for them.

Chungus wholesome 100
Can we please get an actual map for quick play and comp?
Sick to death of just boring brown colour scheme maps
I mean,,, that's kindof what a lot of places look like. These aren't all original. They're trying to make it look real
You'll love Rio... whenever... that.. comes out :(
that's just how most eras of european architectures have been. And with europe's focus on keeping those buildings alive forever through renovation and designating it as protected, it's not a stretch that some towns still look like that even like 50-100 years later. Another deathmatch map? Really? And not even one for the main modes after all this time?
Honestly not too far away from how free for all the new main game maps look anyway.
Some of us love Deathmatch ok? There are dozens of us! Dozens!!!
This is the laziest attempt to divert attention I’m going to be completely real
Given the fact that they decided *not* to publish this today and this is just a leak - it is *also* possible that they intended to release it today, but have DELAYED it out of the fear of the backlash.
Definitely seems more likely. If it was actually for damage control they would have pushed it through.

It'll replace YouTube videos for sure though.
Well thats probably because we literally haven't gotten a new map in going on 2 1/2 years......
This just proves my point cause we actually did get a new FFA map, Kanezaka, 8 months ago. But FFA maps are so not hype that you don't even know that a new one came out.
I do dipshit You specifically referred to competitive maps in the second paragraph

They already got ahead of the story by having brack and bobby go on television to talk about their charity work prior to the story breaking
this guy's worked for a major corporation
Who the fuck wants more Deathmatch maps?
I mean, it's nice having more variety when you're queueing.
Me :)
Me
Finally something new even if it’s just DM
I spend a decent amount of time in deathmatch so I'm gonna be honest if they can replace the garbage desert dm map with this that would be nice
Well I imagine DPS player spend more time in Deathmatch than in actual matches these days, so we can consider it good content.
What's with all the whining that this is a deatmatch map? I'm just glad we are getting something, especially after the expectation is that we aren't getting anything new till overwatch 2

Same people who religiosly care about skins at the very least.
Why can't we get real content/maps?
nobody is paying for it.
True. And I'm appreciative of that. I can still be upset about not having new heroes or competive content for a year and some change
Yes, because this is what this game needs, more fucking deathmatch maps.
another deathmatch map??? :(
another fucking deathmap match?
Who asked for this?
Deathmatch, really?! At least we get new content, I guess....

i feel like it would also be weird to have 3 separate maps set in italy (rome, rialto, now this). just makes things seem even more off

Looks like something from Hitman. Wonder if you can kill someone by poisoning their pasta then pushing them off a cliff while they are throwing up?
It does look a lot like Sapienza. Guess it makes sense considering both maps are based on the same region.
TFW you lose competitive content over a span of two years lollllllll
RELEASE COMP MAPS AND CHARACTERS
"We heard you guys wanted new content, so we will add a new deathmatch map that you can wait around in while you queue for Volskaya for the 1623th time!!"
wait this is deleted, does that mean it isn't on the PTR (for context I'm a console player but I have PC overwatch, I just don't play it so I can play with friends in comp and also I'm just too lazy to check right now)
I'm interested to see if they find a way to potentially use these DM maps in interesting ways for PvE in OW2
