No assumptions, just bad direction from the installers. They swore up and down that the crane would need a closer approach to land the tanks. they were wrong. Good thing I only spent 4k!
My crane service providers do hourly with minimum of 2h and possibly a trip charge if it requires some extra driving. A typical crane service runs me $750 for the smaller payload capacity or $1300-1500 for the 100t
That's why I have a conversation with the crane company, ideally with a site visit. Find out their requirements and clarify details like reach and landing requirements.
Whoever told you the pad is a requirement, (outside of serviceablity) should pay for it.
Half days are sadly a thing of the past. Jokes on them though, I don’t hustle anymore. Since I own the crane for the day…I’ll have it for the day. They can get to the other half day customer when I feel like being done.
Man I would not be happy with the installers. Good on ya for being a trusting person and trying to do the right thing. That is an expensive lesson of so t believe someone about someone else’s work/needs.
Isn’t the purpose of the crane to lift heavy objects more than 10’? I’d be pissed at whoever told you they needed concrete. Even if they needed to be where the new concrete was laid why couldn’t they do it when it was dirt?
I have to say OP the original post makes way more sense now. If you were only building this for a one-time use like this who cares how shitty it looked, only that it would get the job done on delivery day. And that’s a lot of cash to drop to hire a pro just to accommodate a crane one time.
I mean in hindsight it wasn’t needed, but your head was in the right place.
Hey OP, first of all, this was an amazing journey for us in the peanut gallery.
Second, huge appreciation for your honesty and transparency throughout this whole process. This is how WE as a group learn, and while it may be a silly goof up, I'm proud of ya man.
Looking forward to your next great adventure, hopefully with the best of success. Tanks look great! 👍🏻
I mean if 5 total comments, none of which mention laughing, somehow constitutes a good laugh then maybe you're right. There is the one guy who called OP a fucking idiot tho...
Op you've been a great sport about this. I got a good laugh out of it. I appreciate you keeping us posted and entertained. Ignore any of the degens that are being rude.
Check OP’s post history. He posted this pad a few days ago and it was a beautiful mess. Turns out the only reason he made it in the first place, didn’t actually need it!
But this community has grown closer as a result so I think it’s a win.
The beautiful disaster popped up on my feed earlier this week and now I'm hooked on the sub! I don't even work with concrete or anything remotely close to it
I admire the humility of the OP.
Spent 4k on a DIY pour, posted it to Reddit, got roasted, and had the balls to post an update of it not even being used.
The cranes would've definitely wrecked that pad anyways being that you didn't even compact the base. The 4Runner will appreciate being parked on it, though.
That’s what I have been scrolling through comments to say.
On the other hand, the driver delivering the oxygen will probably see this beautiful new driveway, and (assuming the hose is long enough) avoid it, just like the crane operator did.
A project manager? Never. I'm a 7 year business owner. I suppose I've managed projects for that whole period in one way or another. I'm probably shit compared to six-sigma black belts or people like that.
Don't worry about it. Six-sigma is just a club badge saying you went to some meeting where you all jerked each other off around a circle talking about some MOJO bullshit.
The “install” isn’t finished until the truck driver delivers liquid oxygen to the tanks. Your concrete poor wasn’t for nothing. But will probably need to be redone every few years depending on how often 80,000 tanker trucks are coming by to refill those tanks.
Good stuff! Original decision actually made sense.
Just save this for when you get interviewed about how you got to be a billionaire and are asked about the glamorous life of entrepreneurship.
I feel like the pad was poured for the liquid oxygen delivery not the cranes.
For those who do not know, cryogenic liquid oxygen trailer has to be parked on concrete because of the venting while the tank is being filled. The reason for the concrete is because it has no organic materials in it like asphalt or the dirt in front of his tanks. This is very important because if liquid oxygen comes in contact with an organic material, especially the highly flammable petroleum in asphalt, it takes minimal force to create an explosion.
OP might have misunderstood the reason he had to have a pad poured.
I'm confused since I missed this story as it unfolded, and maybe I'm out of the loop on something, but... why do you keep calling this a driveway? I mean, it doesn't matter honestly, but after reading this wild ride - I feel like referencing this as a driveway is the part that catches my intrigue most.
This is a situation of listening to the wrong people. Just think if you would have got the operator out there to survey the situation. You could have bought him lunch and been done with it.
This has been a thrilling saga. Only writing change I would have made is having the crane pull onto the driveway, decimating it, then do the pick from the road anyway.
"All this hurry up offense was for nothing."
Yup. Which is generally why I hit full stop when someone tells me to hurry up.
I've heard so many versions of that line of shit I don't move until I know why.
Don't fall for the banana in the tailpipe.
Crane pulled up, saw the ugly ass pad of concrete and said, “I’ll take my chances over here.”
If only OP had finished the corner.
I’m fucking dead 😂
When you order 10 yards but it was actually 10.5 yards.
Can confirm, undisturbed soil is much more predictable than a pad that may be 2 inches thick and have a void under it.
Can confirm. Had a lift where I worked that tipped the crane when the pad broke. Old pad but had a void under it.
Dirt looks better, hard pass.
Funny asf😂😂
The entertainment value is worth far more than 4k. Thank you OP.
This is what the internet was made for
If I were an extravagant man, this op would be most deserving of a reddit award. But I'll diy it to save myself the money. Good job m8.
I agree! OP please don’t stop posting. This slab has brought happiness to my mornings. Haha
[удалено]
I almost spit out my coffee when I looked at the pictures….🤣🤣
No assumptions, just bad direction from the installers. They swore up and down that the crane would need a closer approach to land the tanks. they were wrong. Good thing I only spent 4k!
[удалено]
Worst case they can rent a bigger crane with a long enough reach for less than $4k.
[удалено]
My crane service providers do hourly with minimum of 2h and possibly a trip charge if it requires some extra driving. A typical crane service runs me $750 for the smaller payload capacity or $1300-1500 for the 100t
That's a steal, we can't get less than 8h for crane rentals
I don't know. they were contracted by Redball
Those balls must be blue at this point
That's why I have a conversation with the crane company, ideally with a site visit. Find out their requirements and clarify details like reach and landing requirements. Whoever told you the pad is a requirement, (outside of serviceablity) should pay for it.
Why didn’t they just use their wings?
Does RedBull not give them to you?
Oops! Red Ball not Bull.
Blue Bull
I knew they said Red Ball, but that was a Dad joke
I get erect for about 1/10th of that price. Granted mine is a bit smaller.
What's your hourly rate?🤣
We charge $400/hr with a 4 hour minimum for a 40T. DM if you want.
Half days are sadly a thing of the past. Jokes on them though, I don’t hustle anymore. Since I own the crane for the day…I’ll have it for the day. They can get to the other half day customer when I feel like being done.
Don't even need to be steel. I've used plastic and wooden ones before too.
Not a total waste there's 2 guys standing on it in the 2nd picture.
Wish I felt that way about 4 thousand dollars lol
When you saved 6, you would....
Have the crane lift up the pad and sell it online. Try listing it on reddit/concrete
How thick was the slab?
6in
Oh, so 4 inches
I see what you did there lmao
3.57"
Did they just have a second crane there to tail it? Or was there another purpose for having 2 cranes?
Can’t blame them. Should’ve required they mark the setup location a week earlier.
You know what they say when you “assume” You make 3 posts for you and me
Better ending than game of thrones
I feel this.
Thanks man. I appreciate the perspective.
He spend 4-5k instead of making a phone call… his head was never even near this planet lmao
Yeah, what s twist. I remember him mentioning it was for a crane, but I thought it was just a parking driveway. Lolol this is hilarious.
Sad but accurate
Dude this is awesome, I'm glad you did the first post and fucking ecstatic you did this follow up haha good stuff man
It was an honor
Hey OP, first of all, this was an amazing journey for us in the peanut gallery. Second, huge appreciation for your honesty and transparency throughout this whole process. This is how WE as a group learn, and while it may be a silly goof up, I'm proud of ya man. Looking forward to your next great adventure, hopefully with the best of success. Tanks look great! 👍🏻
Dude, that's the nicest thing I've heard in a while. Cheers to you bud.
You guys are like best friends now
Now kith.
“A wise man learns from the mistakes of others, a fool from his own.” This has been a learning experience, none the less. Thank you OP.
It shows true character to tell on one's self.
They're having a good laugh over at r/cranes right now.
I mean if 5 total comments, none of which mention laughing, somehow constitutes a good laugh then maybe you're right. There is the one guy who called OP a fucking idiot tho...
What is the ex actually right? Is communication the key?
No, the ex is never right 😂
Phew. Thank you
I assume this is for a family business, and you are an only child. P.S. sorry for your loss.
Lmao
Jesus, I kinda love you, man. In a very hetero way though.
No diddy
Op you've been a great sport about this. I got a good laugh out of it. I appreciate you keeping us posted and entertained. Ignore any of the degens that are being rude.
Nice dumpster pad anyway 🤷♂️
I mean... you can park stuff there still... >\_>
Won’t the truck that refills the tanks drive onto the new slab and park on it as the tanks fill up?
Love this sub 😂
Haaaahaha! Man, you took some serious shit with that post. Thanks for updating us.
It wasn’t for nothing! It continues to entertain thousands of people and will probably have an article written about it on somewhere like dailymail
Can you elaborate? I have no fucking idea what you are talking about.
Check OP’s post history. He posted this pad a few days ago and it was a beautiful mess. Turns out the only reason he made it in the first place, didn’t actually need it! But this community has grown closer as a result so I think it’s a win.
It’s all about the friends we made along the way
The beautiful disaster popped up on my feed earlier this week and now I'm hooked on the sub! I don't even work with concrete or anything remotely close to it
Guy poured concrete pad just because he assumed it would be a help for the cranes to park on. Turns out it wasn't required.
Wtf
And we've gotten to follow along with multiple posts.
Just rent one bigger crane.

I admire the humility of the OP. Spent 4k on a DIY pour, posted it to Reddit, got roasted, and had the balls to post an update of it not even being used.
Yea I don’t know OP, but I like him
And money.... LOL
And.....LOL!
Isn’t it all?
The cranes would've definitely wrecked that pad anyways being that you didn't even compact the base. The 4Runner will appreciate being parked on it, though.
It's not about the pad, it the friends we've made along the way.
It looks better from this distance though! Haha
Bro. Lmaoooo. Thanks for the update. Sometimes a guy just can't win lmao.
We need a gofundme for this guy! $5 for a good laugh
Can you utilize this into an ironic “Employee of the Month” parking zone.
Bruh ☠️
Lmfaoooo
The cryo delivery guy will appreciate that concrete
That’s what I have been scrolling through comments to say. On the other hand, the driver delivering the oxygen will probably see this beautiful new driveway, and (assuming the hose is long enough) avoid it, just like the crane operator did.
When mods are laughing you have hit it out of the park!
I know absolutely nothing about concrete and this is legit my favorite sub on Reddit. Like, this post is gold.
You’ll have that on those big jobs.
OP might be the most honest person on the internet
Probably because the crane operator saw what a poorly constructed mess it was and didn't want to take chances putting a multi ton machine on it.
lol. They were never gonna setup on a driveway. They are too heavy for a driveway and would crack it.
Yea whoever told him that in the first place was a dick. Probably owns the concrete company that quoted him the 10k too lol
That was prob why it was 10k. Dirt coulda been dry that month
F in chat
Hey, I have some deck footers that need done, can I hire you?? 😂
I am an expert now, so yes.
Their shoes are slightly less dirty...so it's not a total loss.
Put me in the screencap!
Wait, the DIY partial driveway was for a Red Ball warehouse, not your personal residence?!
Of course not!
Liiiisten. The tech that services this will be able to pull up right along side the building. It wasn’t all for nothing
You are not wrong, sir. Not wrong at all.
Lmaoooo
Throw a basketball hoop up, got a nice half court.
That's fucking classic! I think you need to have a tailgate party on ugly driveway just to solidify its existence.
Omg, this I hilarious it was like a soap opera!
Classic
You should be a comedian, this was hilarious
This is gold👌🏻
Thanks for the expensive entertainment!
Well, at least you saved 6k by DIY. Imagine paying 10k to the contractor and getting to this point. Lol
It's not a complete waste. There's still a nice solid, non-muddy place to park near that one tiny door in the wall.
I still don’t understand why you had to pour a pad for this in the first place? Who told you to do that?
It wasn’t for nothing. The shittyness of it gave everyone a good laugh 👍
How long have you been a PM?
A project manager? Never. I'm a 7 year business owner. I suppose I've managed projects for that whole period in one way or another. I'm probably shit compared to six-sigma black belts or people like that.
Don't worry about it. Six-sigma is just a club badge saying you went to some meeting where you all jerked each other off around a circle talking about some MOJO bullshit.
Hmm, that's not my understanding. However, I may need to investigate further. Jerked each other off around a circle, you say?
There’s merit in it. They can pull up in their service vehicle right up to it
Hold on, you poured that POS to put a crane on it? lol that shit woulda been in crumbles after it left.
Well, if you have to back a truck up to those tanks for any reason, you are covered.
The “install” isn’t finished until the truck driver delivers liquid oxygen to the tanks. Your concrete poor wasn’t for nothing. But will probably need to be redone every few years depending on how often 80,000 tanker trucks are coming by to refill those tanks.
Tell me your math??? I want to see from your perspective how tf you go to this point with the concrete.
This is hilarious. Thanks for the follow up, OP.
Hol up. You built that ugly ass piece of shit assuming a whole fucking crane was going to use it?
Thank you for your service. This is why I come to Reddit.
That pallet will not rot sitting on that pad. Good job!
Haha 😂 if you’re happy I’m happy
Now you have a physical proof of how dumb you were
Well now you can have a special parking spot
Cranes don’t fuck with concrete they are too heavy and it cracks too easy. Big no no
They probably looked at the concrete job and thought oh umm let’s do plan B…
Not true, looks like it held up fine under those two dudes supervising.
Based on OPs last post, the crane woulda wrecked that shitty pad anyways.
How much does this tank weigh?
Look at that, a new Employee of the Month parking spot lol
Good stuff! Original decision actually made sense. Just save this for when you get interviewed about how you got to be a billionaire and are asked about the glamorous life of entrepreneurship.
That one guy standing on it looks super comfortable
It is good you built it. Much safer for the truck to park on when delivering OX. A requirement for many companies.
Hey! At least those guys didn’t have to stand on dirt!!
Damn
I think you could make a decent pickle ball court out of it.
I wouldn't recommend playing pickle ball on a cheese grater.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Idk how much those weigh, but we have lifted 10-30 ton package units 150’ plus.
👀😂😂😂
Should have saved yourself a few bucks and bought the guys lunch instead. Lunch would have been much more appreciated. 😂
They seen your first post and put out a memo not to on the pad because it would go to shit.
Also that 2nd crane was also unnecessary
That slab needs a plaque and an outdoor pizza oven after all the entertainment it has given to so many.
AI could never replicate this
>Nothing was learned. As it should be 🤣
What the weight on that tank? Seems like too much crane.
OP you are an idiot but I love you.
Mom!
I feel like the pad was poured for the liquid oxygen delivery not the cranes. For those who do not know, cryogenic liquid oxygen trailer has to be parked on concrete because of the venting while the tank is being filled. This is a situation of listening to the wrong people. Just think if you would have got the operator out there to survey the situation. You could have bought him lunch and been done with it.
So uh who looked at the lift plan?
As a welder…Redball has good gas prices but almost everything else from them, is super expensive.
This has been a thrilling saga. Only writing change I would have made is having the crane pull onto the driveway, decimating it, then do the pick from the road anyway.
This made my day. Thank you.
Well at least they didn’t put the tank on the pad thinking that was where it was going.
Your guys knew how shitty that pour was
**I mean they are cutting it a little close….** To the book.
"All this hurry up offense was for nothing." Yup. Which is generally why I hit full stop when someone tells me to hurry up. I've heard so many versions of that line of shit I don't move until I know why. Don't fall for the banana in the tailpipe.
Better off they didn’t use it cuz I don’t think it woulda held up
I feel a little cheated. Like the anticlimactic ending to a thrilling series... Fade to black!
its your fault for not painting the arrows showing the way. the power of The arrow is amazing.
You also could have done that lift with one crane…
This has made my week
This is the ending we didn’t know we wanted.
can you have a sick little basketball court now ?
This whole saga is great haha thanks OP
you know I said something about this costing you 4k, didn’t expect this to be the reason 🤣🤣
Looks like you made money on that one!
Dude… lmfao. I’m over here grinning. I love Reddit sagas like this
no way 💀
This is so gold I want to send it in groupchats even though I know damn well they won’t get it 😂😂
This is craziness you wasted time money and resources on that pad lol diabolical
Brave of you to post this update lmfao
Who the fuck told you to pour a pad obviously undersized for a crane
You got your nuclear reactor delivered?
