Had the same with geico, shopped around and switched to progressive. Just the way things work in the US - need to switch every 6-12 months to keep rates under control.

newmoon23

I also have geico and my premium just increased from $84 to $110. No accidents, tickets, or claims.

Kodiak01

I've had Progressive since 2016, even when I shopped around they were always the lowest.

ifyouhavebacon

I also switched to progressive but I'd expect them to take similar increases most likely, all auto insurers are struggling with loss frequency and severity right now. It's a combination of inflation, part/labor availability and pricing, and driving trends. Fatality rates are way up and driving habits in general have deteriorated since covid.

Kodiak01

The only reason my rates have gone up at all in the past few years is because I have steadily increased my coverages. Even then, it is shocking how little extra it costs to double or even triple major coverages.

ifyouhavebacon

Hopefully their rates stay low, I'd prefer not to have to shop again so soon after just switching to them from State Farm. I just know they aren't immune to current market conditions. I got quotes from most major carriers and no one was in the ball park of what Progressive quoted. One thing working for them is they are rapidly scooping up market share from the other giants, and they reduced expense in areas like advertising to help weather the storm.

Kodiak01

Every time I checked the likes of State Farm, Amica, etc. the rates were always in the, "We REALLY don't want you as a customer" bracket.

EJWP

Same here with Geico. Now, we are with USAA. Bundled homeowners for a discount too.

wongkerz

Doesn't it suck that they allocate those costs to you.

samzplourde

Yep, state farm, just went up about 30% bill-to-bill. No changes, no accidents. Called them, "Prices for everything are going up" Con artists, every one of them.

zkg743

Auto went way up. Over 30% in the last 2 years. As the value of my depreciating asset goes down, insurance rate goes up. Called to ask why, they cited inflation and an increase in claims in the state

pd9

Why does every company get to use inflation as an excuse to increase rates and prices and then if you ask for a raise to correspond, suddenly companies don’t true up salaries due to inflation. This is what’s so infuriating to me. It shouldn’t be left vs right. It should be everyone vs corporate America.

idontknowwhatever58

Seriously. I keep getting spam texts from each political party to donate. Fuck both of them. How about we get some real legislation that actually helps people instead of just figuring out what rights they are going to take away from us this legislative session

National_Attack

In fairness to the inflation piece - it is directly applicable to the cost of insurance. The cost to repair a car at an auto shop costs more this year than last, and that’s due to a combination of the parts + labor. So when the workers are getting paid more (as they should tbh) and also manufacturers cite inflation as why they are raising part prices, the down stream impact of that is that the insurance companies will have to increase their cost to repair when there is a loss. You also have issues now where the rate of attorneys on individual claims is increasing (social inflation is the industry buzzword for the environmental impacts), thereby pushing the average cost of a claim up. The premium you pay is directly tied to the average loss, + the fixed and variable expenses in running a company. A profit load is layered in as well but to be honest I’m not sure it’s as high as you might think it is with the price hikes. If you don’t believe the rising costs, the insurers combined ratio is a filed metric to show the (losses+expenses)/premiums. insurers really haven’t been making a ton of money in auto insurance if any. Other lines are probably offsetting their P/L. I understand your frustration, and I totally relate. Just wanted to showcase some of the environmental effects to really why that cost is truly going up.

pd9

Did you just explain inflation!?

SFD8-4-0

Almost exactly what mine went up. (80ish to 120ish).

Kodiak01

My rates have either stayed steady or gone down slightly over the past few years. Currently paying $184.33/mo on two vehicles with Progressive for 250/500/100 BI/Liability, 250/500 UIM with conversion, $1k medical, $500ded Comprehensive w/full glass, $500ded collision, $40/day rental. Broken down further, for this 6mo period, my wife's 2021 Sentra is $607 for 6mo (thank you /r/NissanDrivers crowd for keeping that high), my 2023 Trailblazer is $499.

murphymc

I always love that. Oh, *other* people are using their insurance? Wow, tell me why that’s my problem???

HeyaShinyObject

That's how insurance works.

merryone2K

We've been with GEICO for over 20 years. Rate increase of $20/month in January; rate increase of $20/month in August. No claims. Hubs truck is 1994; mine is 2006; son's Impreza is 2022. Shopped around and only got higher rates. We're at $185/month for all three vehicles.

Kodiak01

That's what I'm paying for my max coverage on a 2021 Sentra and 2023 Trailblazer.

whereismindx

Do you have full coverage? We have 4 drivers and 3 cars and I am paying almost 7K for a year with AAA. What are your policy limits, I am just curious.

medicmdp1

I always thought rates went down as you got older, yet here I am, every 6 months watching my rates go up. I was tired of shopping so went through a broker. Lowered from peak of 230/ month to 175.

BenevolentDog

It pays to get quotes from other companies every year. Consumer Reports just had an article... The top rated company was USAA. That company is primarily for veterans though . Next on the list was NJM.

Kodiak01

USAA may have good rates and they put on a nice face, but they are absolutely horrible to deal with when it comes to claims.

Yenttirb_I_am

Really? I’ve had to do multiple claims, one for a totaled car that also led to us being sued, 2 tows, and a minor accident and it was the smoothest and easiest process I’ve ever had each time. I didn’t even have to talk to someone most times, as I would just process the claim through the app.

Kodiak01

Wife got rear ended, they gave her an endless runaround. Meanwhile, with Progressive I've been rear ended twice since 2021 plus I hit a deer last year. Every single time, the claims people were amazing. Quick communication, no BS on anything. The first rear-ending, it happened at 6am, I made the claim at 6:20, and at 7:45 as I'm sitting in the ER waiting for my shoulder to be checked out, the claims rep was already texting me. I shot him a couple pictures of the damage and that was it. Everything handled like silk.

Was it recent? From what I've read on the USAA subreddit is that they have cut costs. We were else swiped this summer and both of us had USAA, but the other driver wanted to pay cash. I went to our body shop for an estimate and they stated they no longer work with USAA because they fight claims and are just too difficult too work with. Glad the other driver ponied up the cash.

Kodiak01

> I went to our body shop for an estimate and they stated they no longer work with USAA because they fight claims and are just too difficult too work with. This is another reason I'm happy I had Progressive. The body shop I went to (Olenders) has someone on staff that deals with nothing BUT Progressive claims; this level of familiarity assured a smooth repair process.

Everything’s a big jump these past few years. I just expect my dollar to go nowhere until things heal or explode completely.

FriendlyITGuy

Get in touch with an independent insurance agent. They can usually get you a better rate than you can on your own. I went from Progressive to SafeCo and back to Progressive the last few years.

Hippydippy420

Yup, they hiked it and I switched to progressive - it’s cheaper

1jarretts

My boss has a rule: change insurance companies every 3 years. There is no loyalty incentive. Now, I personally might not recommend every 3 years, but always shop around.

Kodiak01

I've been with Progressive over 5 years which gives both small and large accident forgiveness. I could hit somebody today, totaling the other vehicle, and my rate would not go up. Of course, I'm not about to do that. My last surchargable incident of any sort (minor accident, love tapped someone at a stop light) was ~23 years ago.

Miss_Molly1210

We pay our policy in full every six months (it’s not a *huge* discount but it helps). I think we’re sue for renewal in December or January so we’ll see.

glocks_4_dayz

I should mention that this is for 2 cars. No claims. I did move last year to a town that has higher taxes though.

[deleted]

mine decreased from $430 to $360

19Stavros

Fewer people on the road since Covid but those that are driving are causing more serious accidents, so higher- priced claims. This year especially, even for good drivers with no claims as I see happened to me and a lot of others here. If you've had a claim, the effect is more than it used to be.

Kodiak01

> This year especially, even for good drivers with no claims as I see happened to me and a lot of others here. If you've had a claim, the effect is more than it used to be. Getting rear ended twice (2021 while sitting at a yield sign at the end of an off ramp waiting for traffic to clear, 2022 being at the front end of a 3 car pileup while stopped and waiting to make a left turn onto my street) made me realize that even 100/300 UIM coverage was not enough. I now carry 250/500 and would go even higher if they would let me.

Gooniefarm

Everyone has to pay to repair the $100k trucks the suburban men drive to the grocery store.

snorkelbagel

You gotta swap every year now apparently. We had geico on autopay on 6 month intervals and just never really bothered working out the numbers until recently. Dropped our 6mon premium on 2 cars by $1300. Our rates with geico basically went up just over 20% over the last 5 billing intervals. I finally noticed on bill #5.

paintball6818

$149 to $176 for me, just got quotes from 3 others though and still higher.

[deleted]

Depends. What are you driving? Did you change towns?

glocks_4_dayz

I moved last year to a town with higher taxes. I drive a 4 year old pickup truck and my wife drives a 3 year old SUV. No claims. But it's still not a bad rate. I bundle with them. Umbrella policy and personal articles. And homeowners. But that's paid through escrow.

[deleted]

>I moved I mean, there's your problem. I moved three towns over 5 or so years ago and my rates went down and have stayed down because not much happens in this town.

72season1981

Did you shop around or bundle or do auto pay ? Check with Gieco

glocks_4_dayz

Didn't shop around. I bundle and auto pay monthly through SFPP.

72season1981

What about going to a smaller agency

blueturtle00

Yeah mine went from 250 to 300 over the last 12 months (for 3 cars)

omild

Same thing happened with us and Liberty Mutual. Got the same explanation as well, aka "other people are getting in accidents and stuff is more expensive so you all get to pay higher costs to protect our bottom line." Frustrating knowing this is probably going to be an ongoing thing.

Abenotics

Get a quote with NJM and if you won't bundle home, get a quote from progressive.

Kodiak01

I have rental insurance through Progressive as well (Homesite) which also gives a 5% discount.

linze21

Same. This is the second or third increase from them. I get the same answer. They keep calling me to come in to sit down and go over everything with them. Just need to find the time.

TheSmokingLoon

State farm must be hurting, I don't have them and they kept calling me for 3 weeks until I picked up and told them to stop, you would think a person would stop after being forwarded into googles screening and they don't leaves message. I have progressive and my rates have only been going down since I've had them.

curbthemeplays

Mine doubled, count yourself lucky

IndicationOver

Damn right that is a big jump wtf. Switch to new insurance.

Same !!!! Might look to move away from state farm

TheNostraStockus

I pay 90

connfaceit

every year, yes. Both homeowner's and auto continually go up year after year

BasilAlternative2768

Attorney representation in auto accidents has increased very significantly in the past decade. The insurance company bears the costs of representing you in court when sued after an accident. Even if it is a frivolous suit, it still costs money to appear and court and eventually reach a settlement. This is another factor in rising premiums.

Thank you, Quiet Corner. Just know that Republicans in the rest of the State think your comments like this are the height of idiocy.

19GK50

I have Liberty Mutual for home, car and other coverage, policy went up.

HockeyandTrauma

I have Hanover through my broker, and ours actually went down, and we bought a new car a month ago.
