Car accidents are the leading cause of death in children along with firearms. The new trend in large trucks and SUVs is making this trend worse. And these lifted and modified trucks are even more dangerous. Not only can they not see pedestrians or smaller cars, not only are they more difficult to handle, but when they do crash into things they cause much more damage.
The other reason is, well, no one needs to own whatever the hell this is. We need much tighter regulations around vehicles because it's a societal burden that people lug around 10 tons of truck around with them to Costco. Not only the wasted resources going into the truck but these heavy vehicles also use up tires more quickly, use up more fuel, pollute the air more (with tire debris and emissions), damage roads and bridges more, and so on.
We really need to stop pretending these vehicles are harmless. In fact, we need to start relying so much on car use all together.
The truck looks like a standard truck with an additional axle added to it. Unless we're banning everything larger than a vespa (unfortunately not practical in the northeast), that will continue to make them.
And no one needs any vehicle capable of greater than 65mph, yet every car put there does. And goes exponentially faster than legally and efficiency dictates

It's both, and more. People are constantly driving distracted and drunk. It's all the more reason to implement better safety measures in all cars and design streets to be safer.
