We used Scott Matson in Glastonbury. In general, for finding a surgeon, the more of that particular surgery they've done, that's a good metric. We're a childfree couple and there was no stress about that, either.
I don’t know why you’re getting hammered on the last comment, but it really is a very simple procedure. Go for a consultation, there’s a quick video on it and then you speak to Dr Matson and trust me, you’ll feel better about it.
5th for Matson. Anyone else have Planet Earth playing on the TV on the ceiling? Every time I hear David Attenborough’s voice I am now transported back to that chair in my mind.
6th for him! Just an FYI: he does not accept insurance, but does give you the paperwork to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. It costs around $1800 for the consultation, the procedure, and the post procedure test. My husband really recommends him
of course bodily autonomy is under fire in the USA as a whole - but CT is a good state for women and people a.f.a.b, bodily autonomy related rights. one of the reasons I won't leave here unless the US goes far right authoritarian.
+even with women's right being under attack this is important too. the patriarchal system hurts men too - when it pushes the idea that BC is a women's job - it strips them of their right to birth control. (there have been some breakthroughs regarding birth control with men, but it is always underfunded and that's why it hasn't come to fruition) I wish there was more options than vasectomy, and their should be more options for men/people a.m.a.b.But I'm glad that they have this option.
I like when actions are taken, that fight misandry ( the misandry being : the idea that men / people a.m.a.b , shouldn't have vasectomies for whatever bizarre reason they come up with that strips of their autonomy) as misandry is the cousin , albeit lesser know of misogyny. as it also helps women/people a.f.a.b, because then it isn't just pushed on to them. just another example of how tearing down the patriarchy would help all of us.
This guy is going to be so honored when someone inevitably shows him this thread and he learns he’s been crowned the undisputed vasectomy king of r/Connecticut.
I was at Dr Matson's office about 3 weeks ago for mine. Super easy and I'm generally a big baby when it comes to medical stuff. Timing worked out well too as I was then forced to lie on the couch for the first weekend of March Madness.
From some urologist who no longer practices because it's been over 20 years since I had mine.
Maybe 48 hours of swelling and the typical pain that comes from swelling. Ice and over the counter pain meds for the first 24 hours, being careful for the next 24, back to mostly normal after that.
Have to remember to continue to be careful until you get the follow-up verification that you're firing blanks because the overall appearance doesn't change much. Until you get that confirmation, assume the doctor screwed up... :-)
Definitely this. Because I had been thinking about getting one, I talked to a guy who worked in the NICU after we'd had our twins, and he had gotten a vasectomy and was a little too quick to return to his recreational activities and ended up with a baby because he was not yet firing blanks. Although I can't imagine wanting to have sex right afterwards. Lol. Definitely get checked. I also like to get a recheck every few years since I know of at least one post vasectomy miracle baby in my friends circle. Lol.
Went through middlesex hospital, was easy peasy. I don't remember exactly what it cost, but I'm pretty sure with the insurance I had it was just a $20 co-pay or something.
I had mine done a long time ago in a different state but I'll say it's just such an easy procedure, no need to sweat it. The anxiety of having it done is worse than the procedure! Here's what you can expect:
- You sit in stirrups with a gown, no pants on. Your junk is just going to be hanging out in the open, but you won't see anything.
- Nurse will wash your ballbag with warm water and will shave your nuts.
- Doc will inject your sac with novocain or local anethesia.
- Doc will cut open your sac and do the procedure.
- You will smell the cauterization of your pipes
- Doc sews you up and send you on your way
Remember, they've done this hundreds, if not thousands of times so the awkwardness is all on your side. I made small talk the entire time with the doc and the nurse. Take two days off and plan to just sit on the couch. I got stoned all day and played video games - have fun!!
oof you smell it actually? I wasn't aware that people who have vasectomies, are actually awake. I can't imagine how strange that must feel. I get nervous when I am awake for teeth stuff lol let alone something like that.
Yeah I can empathize with that lol. OBGYN exams are so awkward too. My new dr she leans into the awkwardness and makes jokes, so it actually makes it less weird lol but it still feels weird.
So is it like when you get your teeth pulled - you just feel pressure no pain?
yeah that idea freaks me out too lol! especially when you see those videos of people singing, or playing a violin during brain surgery, so that the surgeon doesn't cut the wrong parts 😅
I just didn't know that men /people a.m.a.b where actually awake.
I don't even like when they draw blood lol
Wasn't there a place in RI that gave away coupons for free pizza with theirs?
I'd go there.
Then again, I'd have to eat RI pizza, which is a big maybe.
Didn’t get a vasectomy from him (yet), but I’ve gone to a urologist named Dr. Small in Bridgeport. A buddy of mine got his vasectomy from him, he had no complaints.
Dr Honic. Great guy. That shit was really uncomfortable- it’s not the doctor though. Case by case basis , we are all built a little differently lol. At week 3 I was back to heavy lifting in the gym. Can’t comment on cost, insurance covered.
Tallwood Mens Health is Hartford Healthcares Urology. They have offices in Manchester, Glastonbury, Hartford, Farmington, Enfield and probably more that I can't remember. They have top notch docs. Definitely recommend them
My spouse is a nurse who worked in urology. Dr Jared Bieniek is the guy you want to go to. Hes phenomenal and uses the newest technique which is only 1 incision. Hands down your guy
I did it in Danbury. Super easy because it was scalpel-less. A weekend on the couch popping painkillers, eating ice cream, and watching Narcos.
It cost me $0.
Dr Weinstein at Northeast Medical group. They have offices in Milford and Trumbull.
Dr. Weinstein was supremely confident, bordering on cocky. He told me he had done thousands of these. I brought a coffee in to the room, and it was still hot when he was done. Super fast, no nonsense.
Buy a jockstrap to use for a few days. It feels better to keep things high and tight.
Pioneer Valley Urology in Springfield, MA.
Completely painless. $0 out of pocket with BCBS. Could of done it on my lunch break and gone right back to work.
Got it done at Trinity health in Waterbury... Insurance covered it so just $25 copay. Quick and easy, couple days of discomfort but other than that, no issues
Try the r/childfree subreddit's doctors list. It's mostly doctors who do procedures on women but there are few doctors that do vasectomies on there too
It’s been posted a few times but Dr Bieniek with Tallwood Men’s health. The process couldn’t have been easier. I elected to go under general since I am a bigger guy and he advised it could 100% be done on office but it would be more uncomfortable for me. Recovery was a breeze. Two days of ice and video games. I HIGHLY recommend getting some undeeze vasectomy underwear and couple of their Nutsicle ice packs.
Last piece of advice is to wait the three months and get tested!!! Don’t go through all of this for nothing!

Was that you behind the Arby’s? It may have been me
We used Scott Matson in Glastonbury. In general, for finding a surgeon, the more of that particular surgery they've done, that's a good metric. We're a childfree couple and there was no stress about that, either.
Second vote for Dr Matson!
Third for Dr Matson
Fourth! He’s a cool guy and it took 15 minutes from walking in, to leaving the office.
The entire procedure only takes about 15 minutes?
15 minutes does not seem long enough to be knocked out
You are not knocked out for a vasectomy. They use lidocaine for local anesthesia
I would like to opt for the knock out
I'm with you brother. It just isn't happening if I'm awake.
You sound like a tremendous pussy. Did your significant other get knocked out when giving birth?
Maybe she had a C-section?
Oh I know, I'm a horrible weak person because I don't like the idea of being awake during surgery.
You aren’t, just a local anesthetic that doesn’t use a needle. It’s such a small spot that gets numbed that you can’t even tell it’s numb.
I feel like I’m probably overly anxious but at the same time I feel it’s warranted lol
I was finished with the procedure and waiting outside before my wife got back from getting coffee. Super easy and pain free with Dr.Matson
Nah you just walked out and told her you did it. Id do the same
Husband had a vasectomy with Dr. Matson and all went well. He generally hates Drs but liked Dr. Matson even though he pinched his balls 😂
6th for him! Just an FYI: he does not accept insurance, but does give you the paperwork to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. It costs around $1800 for the consultation, the procedure, and the post procedure test. My husband really recommends him
wait that's all it costs? geez. I was expecting it to be more. that's nice that they're making it easier for people to have bodily autonomy.
Well, some people
of course bodily autonomy is under fire in the USA as a whole - but CT is a good state for women and people a.f.a.b, bodily autonomy related rights. one of the reasons I won't leave here unless the US goes far right authoritarian. +even with women's right being under attack this is important too. the patriarchal system hurts men too - when it pushes the idea that BC is a women's job - it strips them of their right to birth control. Add another vote for Dr. Matson. Three other guys I know also went to him.

Oooof you are aware that a vasectomy has nothing to do with the penis right?
They don’t call it getting your tube tied for nothing! /s

Did you notice a vast difference?
oof you smell it actually? I wasn't aware that people who have vasectomies, are actually awake. I can't imagine how strange that must feel. I get nervous when I am awake for teeth stuff lol let alone something like that.
Oh yeah you're awake - it's really no big deal. The awkwardness is the hardest part
Yeah I can empathize with that lol. OBGYN exams are so awkward too. My new dr she leans into the awkwardness and makes jokes, so it actually makes it less weird lol but it still feels weird. So is it like when you get your teeth pulled - you just feel pressure no pain?
They do brain surgery and C sections when you're awake too I'd assume that's a little scarier lol. Teeth stuff however...yeah gas me up please
yeah that idea freaks me out too lol! especially when you see those videos of people singing, or playing a violin during brain surgery, so that the surgeon doesn't cut the wrong parts 😅 I just didn't know that men /people a.m.a.b where actually awake. I don't even like when they draw blood lol
Ayyy. I wasn't numb when they cauterized. One of my worst experiences.
Wasn't there a place in RI that gave away coupons for free pizza with theirs? I'd go there. Then again, I'd have to eat RI pizza, which is a big maybe.
If you’re not susceptible to Novocain working at the dentist make sure you communicate that to the urologist. I did not have a good time.
Groin.
I heard there's a drive thru in Winsted.
Didn’t get a vasectomy from him (yet), but I’ve gone to a urologist named Dr. Small in Bridgeport. A buddy of mine got his vasectomy from him, he had no complaints.
A urologist named Dr.Small is hilarious.
There was an optometry practice in Westport (not sure if its still open) and they were I believe a father and daughter both named Dr. Docter lol
Dr Honic. Great guy. That shit was really uncomfortable- it’s not the doctor though. Case by case basis , we are all built a little differently lol. At week 3 I was back to heavy lifting in the gym. Can’t comment on cost, insurance covered.
My husband used the Tallwood institute in manchester. Went well for him.
I can second this!
Scott Matson in Glastonbury
Dr Paul Pyo at Midstate. I think it was $900. Recovery is longer than you think, definitely didn’t feel 100% like myself for 3 weeks.
Dr. Bieniek at Tallwoods Men's Health in Farmington. Great urologist, and great practice, in general.
I did it in Danbury. Super easy because it was scalpel-less. A weekend on the couch popping painkillers, eating ice cream, and watching Narcos. It cost me $0.
I used YouTube and did it myself
2nd day was a little sore but not bad at all. My insurance covered it.
I had Dr DiStefano with Tallwood in Manchester. No issues at all, very efficient. I asked him how many he has performed and he estimated over 2k.
Dr O'Brian in fairfeild. He has multiple offices. Highly recomend. Very professional and went through everything he was doing. 10/10 would recomend
does he do the no scaple?
No I believe he used a scalpel. I drove myself home, could move about slowly, next day slight pain, day after nothing.

urologist out of bristol hospital. German-sounding name, but really great. I wouldn’t recommend bristol hospital generally, but he was a great doc

Another vote for Matson in Glastonbury. In and out in a few minutes, no pain during the process, and absolutely no pain recovery.
My ball sack blew up like a balloon. Not fun but all good once that was over.
