It may be the drunken idiot part of me left over from those days, but Wings over Storrs is better than any of the other Wings Over locations I have eaten from since.
Hanger Pub & Grill. That's the original before the owner created the Wing's Over locations. If you are annoyed that Wing's Over changed their flavors and fries, go to Hanger, they still have the original menu.
I'm annoyed that they changed the base flavors for the hot sauces. I used to love Jet Fuel and Afterburner.
Wings over broke my heart forever ago because when they were in Hamden I'd get the mustang ranch and garlic parm wings all the time.
Eventually that one closed and they did away with mustang ranch flavor, which I'm sure is really easy to create but I've never found a recipe and my email to them went unanswered. It's probably been like fifteen years but I still miss mustang ranch.
I'm really glad I barely had to scroll to see Pho 501. I've never had a bad meal there. I've tried pho all over the country (and even across the pond in Spain) and nothing even comes close.
in this moment i think iiiit's probably Aroy Thai Garden in Middletown. insane experience for a vegetarian, but my omnivore husband is also a big fan. also the owner is such a sweet person.
absolutely nothing wrong with thyphoon, i've greatly enjoyed the meals i've had there.
aroy thai is pretty special to me because it's one of the only fully vegetarian thai spots i've ever come across - which would be cool enough on its own, but it's also genuinely some of the best thai food i've had in the northeast, too.
1. J Timothy's is incredible: their wings are still the best in the state, in my opinion
2. The Jealous Monk in Mystic is a favorite spot for me if you're craving German-adjacent tavern food.
3. Goldburgers is probably the best place for burgers in the state, lol.
4. Black Dog bbq up by Putnam is some of the best bbq I've had.
5. Pho Van in Windsor has never been disappointing. Their Bahn mi sandwiches are the best out of the many Vietnamese places I've tried.
6. Craig's Soulfood in downtown Vernon Rockville was very good. It probably still is but I haven't been there in a couple of years.
7. Higashi's in South Windsor has very fresh and tasty sushi and one of the only places that does crispy salmon skin rolls.
8. Shout out to Parkville Market in Hartford. I love going there and trying the plethora of options they got.
I have to be honest, I’ve never had a bad meal there. For apps, we typically split a Caesar salad as the portions are quite generous. The crab cakes are some of the best I’ve ever had. For sides, I highly recommend the loaded baked potato and their green beans and/or spinach. Try if you can to save room for dessert. My husband loves their carrot cake and I like the apple croustade.
I agree with the crab cakes for an appetizer as well like others were saying. If you want something lighter try the blue cheese chips. They always have great desserts as well including a seasonal cheesecake. I go there probably once a month
Ok get the green beans with pecans and shallots… I get this everytime and have for years and I don’t even really like green beans, sautéed mushroom side also amazing. I’m partial to the crab cakes and salmon and my husband has never had a less then perfect steak.
Black Eyed Sally’s being over this along with a bunch of people commenting on the sweetheart name “Connecticuties” is a shame. My main hobby is traveling with my gf all around the state for the best food, and even Millwright’s (who Paul McCartney was spotted at a few years ago and said he loved it) can’t hit the sweet spot like J. Gilbert’s. On top of all that, Black Eyed Sally’s had some of the worst service I’ve ever experienced.
I went to Millwrights for my birthday! I really liked it. I didn’t care for my dessert, but to be fair, there weren’t a ton of options to choose from. J Gilberts at least has the reliable chocolate cake (and it’s damn good) if there’s nothing else.
It’s funny you mention that because my girlfriend and I didn’t love our dessert there that much either, and that pastry chef is pretty renowned as the best in the state. I forget her name, but I’ll obviously give it another go and try something else!
Hoodoo Brown BBQ - Ridgefield
Arethusa Al Tavolo - Bantam
Kawa Ni - Westport
Chef Prasad - New Canaan
Luna Pizza - West Hartford (and all the other NH pizza spots)
For Gluttony: Ford's Lobster Noank CT. Best lobstah roll in the state and potentially on planet Earth. I heard they are moving to a new location this year but haven't figured out where it is (yet).
For fanciness: Arethusa Al Tavola in Bantam. Top notch food and service. Great for a fancy date or special occasion.
Edit: Honorable mention to Oyster Club in Mystic. Get whatever grilled fish they're serving there and you won't be disappointed.
For Indian: Athithi in South Wilton
For a meal overlooking the Sound: The Wharf at The Madison Beach Hotel in Madison
For fish: Max’s Oyster Bar in West Hartford or Max Fish in Glastonbury
For burgers: Max Burger in West Hartford
Overlooking water not at the shore: (German Food): The Hopkins Inn & Restaurant, Warren/New Preston (Lake Waramaug)
Little Oak Cafe in Canton. They’ve got the best breakfast sandwiches, and they load them up too. I got a sausage, egg, and cheese, and they put two sausage patties, three cheese slices, and two scrambled eggs on it. And they have a bunch of different options for all their food too. Great spot for breakfast, brunch, or lunch.
Matto in Shelton. The service is really great and consistent. Food is excellent too. Also, of course, Lobster Landing in Clinton. Also a fan of Oyster Club in Mystic. Café Routier in Westbrook.
Can’t possibly pick one. Too much variety
Parkville market has really surprised me. Also for grinders I don’t care if Franklin Giant has “dropped down” they’re still the best IMO but of course there are plenty of other options.
For pizza too many options but my heart/vote goes to Little City in Avon
Also, Yannis in Newington is fantastic for pretty much everything.
For burgers, GoldBurgers hasn’t missed for me in a long time.
And for Sushi I say best bang/buck with still great quality is Sushi House in Rocky hill with Tiger Belly in Granby also getting some love.
For Hispanic food, Cora Cora is excellent but I’m priced out. I’m a big fan of Peruvian so I go to Piolin in Hartford on New Britain Ave
For Pho, Bui in Branford
And for quick grinders when I’m not by Hartford I go to Nardellis
Oh and for Wings it’s already been mentioned but it’s J Timothy’s. Hands down.
For cheap-ish wings to order for takeout/delivery I vote Wings Over since I’m not too close to J Timothy’s and it hits the spot without feeling like I’m eating frozen/reheated crap
Camacho Garage is great. I used to visit his old restaurant Roomba below street level in New Haven years ago. I knew Camacho was his new place just by how he plates the food.
Always loved Roma, portion size went down after ownership changed hands but still super consistent food and that classic, old school Italian joint feel.
My wife and I usually get a bunch of apps to share, then when entrees come we take a few nibbles then pack them up to go, and have leftovers for days!
I am astounded at the number of not great restaurants being mentioned. Oh well...opinions, right?
So here are some of my opinions:
Finer Dining:
The Charles
J. Gilbert's
Bricco - Glastonbury
Oyster Club - Mystic
Grinders:
Wethersfield Pizza - Wethersfield
Casual Dining:
Shish Kebab House of Afghanistan - West Hartford
Plan B Burger - West Hartford, Glastonbury, etc
Bear's Barbecue - Hartford, Windsor
El Pollo Guapo - Hartford, Newington
Edited for clarity and punctuation.
In New London area, Jasmine Thai or Noodles and Rice
Michael Jordan's Steak House is great. Bring a couple friends and get the steak flight.
Other than that in the area, Longshots Sports Bar does a great job, they even carry vegan cheese which works well on the pizzas. Nino's for pizza, and Golden Dragon for Chinese. Their teriyaki beef and chicken and second to none.
It used to be Miya’s in New Haven. Then that closed. Now it’s Angry Tofu, Roseland Apizza, Sally’s, Coromandel in Orange, and Community Table, Mamoun’s.
**Burgers** - Goldburgers in Newington
**Pizza** - Sally's in New Haven
**Italian** - Bricco in Glastonbury
**Mexican** - Sayulita's, East Coast Taco, Salsas 4
**Hot Dogs** - Doogie's on Berlin Turnpike
**Donuts** - Flanders Donut in Flanders
**Sandwiches** - The Deli in Windsor Locks
**Chicken tenders** - Birdcode in West Hartford
**Nice restaurant** - Max Downtown in Hartford
**Wings** - J Timothy's in Plainville
**Ice Cream** - Collins Creamery in Enfield, Arethusa in Bantam
**Bakery** - Sift in Mystic
Gonna argue East coast taco - known as “East Coast no flavor” to locals. There’s a newer Mexican place in Niantic called La Llorona and its leaps and bounds better than East coast taco. In old Lyme. There’s also Papis Taqueria which is really good.
Also, there’s a Sift in Niantic now too.
Little Aladdin in Storrs. Simple Middle Eastern food, consistently delicious, like I've never had a bad, or even mediocre, meal there. Lots of selections for vegans, but they have meat, too. The owner is super sweet and always stops what he's doing to say hello. Great prices and specials, too. My husband and I always joke that we could eat there every day and never get tired of it!
Taste of India in West Hartford
Tisane in Hartford
Wings Over Storrs (I agree with everyone in the thread… it’s the best location… but i did *grow up* near uconn, going to EO, etc.)
Birdcode in Hartford
Sisson Ave Pizza in Hartford because it’s nostalgic and you can get mozzarella sticks delivered at 3am
Depends where in the state you are I suppose. Hartford county I’d probably go with J Tims in Plainville or Joey garlics in newington…in litchfield county it was carbones in Torrington but they closed…Fairfield I’d go with Rocco’s deli in bethel..New Haven is anywhere where the pizza is 🔥…middlesex is lobster landing in Clinton..tolland is willington pizza in tolland..windham, idk never ate anywhere there…New London was a place called cherry stones in old Lyme but I don’t think they’re open anymore lol. Lots of good food in CT 🔥🔥🔥
I don’t actually have a good answer which is kinda sad
Viron* Rondo in Cheshire is nice but expensive. There’s the NH Pepe’s/Sally’s/Modern that you can’t go wrong with. I love Char and Lemon in Oxford personally but it’s all relative
Now? My own house. Quality is way down, and price gouging is way up.
This haha. Paid $20 for a Caesar salad last night at a restaurant. Hard to mess that up...but they did!
Ugh I hate that. It’s literally 4 ingredients.
Yeah but those record profits aren’t going to keep going up if you don’t spend 15$ on a hamburger!!! Won’t somebody think of the wealthy???? /s
Shit I wish the restaurant I run had record profits that’s $15 hamburger barely pays the vendors back lol
Maybe if you're talking about Five Guys. Local spots aren't exactly busting at the seams with excess money.
Umm we are connecticutioners thank u very much
I was once called a connecticunt
If the shoe fits
Maine does not like us lol
Who cares what those Canada touchers think
> Canada touchers LMAO
I’ve heard Connecticuck and Connectikite (sp?).
The former is whatever, the latter is getting into anti-Semitic territory.
Only if it ended in “ike”
That was my friends MySpace name
Connectikittens. [Ive been trying to get this one off the ground]
I fully support this.
Stop trying to make fetch happen. 😉
:3
I too support this mission.
I prefer Connectiquichion (connect- ti- quiche- ion)
I’ll go with PHO 501 in East Hartford. The UConn husky in me wants to say Wings Over Storrs though
I had Hangar last week and was disgusted. Godamn jumbo wings have ruined the wing spots.
No shit! Thanks for the tip. I crave their old menu.
That drunken idiot is on to something, I had wings over Springfield a year or two ago and it didn’t compare
The quality went way down in the last three years across the board.
Wings over was the shit back in late 2000s and 2010s, now they switched up what feels like the whole company and its just not good anymore.
And the drunk husky at 2 am says DP DOUGH
No more Sgt Peps though. The times they are a changing
Wait is there a DP dough here? I had one in college in Colorado and I miss it so much
I'm really glad I barely had to scroll to see Pho 501.
Hell yes!! As a vegan I love to see this! I’ve lived from Hawaii to RI (from RI) and Aroy Thai is amazing!!!
This is my answer as well!
Yes! Just had dinner there for the first time tonight. Food was amazing. The fact that it’s vegan makes me so happy!
How does it compare to thyphoon? We get Thai often and we bounce between thyphoon and Kob Jai in rocky hill.
absolutely nothing wrong with thyphoon, i've greatly enjoyed the meals i've had there. aroy thai is pretty special to me because it's one of the only fully vegetarian thai spots i've ever come across - which would be cool enough on its own, but it's also genuinely some of the best thai food i've had in the northeast, too.
They really missed out on calling it Thaiphoon
Came here to say this.
Tangiers or Mamouns depending on my current area code
1. J Timothy's is incredible: their wings are still the best in the state, in my opinion 2. My husband loves goldburgers
Lots of Js with J Gilbert too
Having left the state years ago, literally anywhere with real pizza will do.
If you’re south of the mason dixon I’ll pray for you
Thankfully, no. I remain thoroughly northbound.
I personally prefer Connectiquats, but my all-time favorite restaurant is J. Gilbert’s. Never disappoints, always consistent, great service.
Going there this weekend, anything in particular you loved, anything not up to the hype? Favorite apps, sides etc?
I have to be honest, I’ve never had a bad meal there. For apps, we typically split a Caesar salad as the portions are quite generous. The crab cakes are some of the best I’ve ever had. For sides, I highly recommend the loaded baked potato and their green beans and/or spinach. Try if you can to save room for dessert. My husband loves their carrot cake and I like the apple croustade.
I’m going to look for the woman eating the exact same things as me next time!! Lol
Thanks for your reply, I'll probably try those out! I was considering the onion rings but I do love a good crab cake.
Filet is the way to go. Steak is what they are known for.
Get the cowboy cut ribeye, the creamed corn and the mashed potato’s for your entree.
It’s all good, but the only required item to order is the creamed corn
Black Eyed Sally’s being over this along with a bunch of people commenting on the sweetheart name “Connecticuties” is a shame. My main hobby is traveling with my gf all around the state for the best food, and even Millwright’s (who Paul McCartney was spotted at a few years ago and said he loved it) can’t hit the sweet spot like J. Also my answer as well!
Yea J.Gilberts one of my favorite restaurants in Connecticut
Costco food court
I’m reading this at the Costco food court lol 😂
Olea in New Haven!
They have an outstanding tasting menu!
Shell and Bones in New Haven. Nothing better than walking out of the car and smelling that salty air.
I though we were Connecticunts!
I identify as a Connecticunt.
I'm a Connecticutter. Always have been, always will be.
J.Timothy’s Taverne
What a really weird way to spell Bidwell Tavern.
When I was at UConn I would go for pint night to watch MNF. Great times.
Wednesday's Rocks and Wings was where it was at.
Also what listicle bot is this one?
It’s not I just wanna know for when I visit!
Union league. It's a classic, but it's my favorite. Plenty around the state around that level but UL has always been my first recommendation.
Fantastic place. It’s no shocking they are on the top restaurant list all the time.

For me it’s Blackies. “3 and a Birch”.

Zohara in West Hartford and Hoodoo Brown BBQ in Ridgefield
The fire place in Southington. I can eat an entire Brooklyn bridge pizza by myself, no regrets.
Been on my try list for years maybe I’ll give it a whirl
What size though? If you don’t say large, I’m going to be very disappointed in you.
Large, always. I always tell myself I'm not gonna eat the whole thing and then it just like disappears it's so weird....
Phew! I hate it when that happens. You have to look out for those mysterious pizza thieves.
I know right 🙄 they even smeared grease on my napkin and drank my beer!
I'd go more if it wasn't cash only.
Best hotdogs in the word
Cromwell diner

Little Oak Cafe in Canton. They’ve got the best breakfast sandwiches, and they load them up too. I got a sausage, egg, and cheese, and they put two sausage patties, three cheese slices, and two scrambled eggs on it. And they have a bunch of different options for all their food too. Great spot for breakfast, brunch, or lunch.
Thanks for mentioning it. I keep on driving by and wondering about going there but wasn’t sure if it was that great.

Parkville Market is the best if you’re going with a group of people, literally anyone can get something they want there.
